Since I passed many levels on my own, I decided to click on this article. Prior to, I wouldn't even dare look.
But now that I've played this level, I can say that I lost many lives trying to time my jump right on the last swing! It's a tough game but very rewarding once accomplished. Lots of fun!
@sinalefa Thanks! I've had it now since early October. And although I haven't been playing with it as much as I'd like, I feel that SM3DW is going to change that.
Started playing a new file with my six year old nephew and we passed the first world already! Fun stuff so far! And I do have to say we make a good team .
The holidays are going to be fun this year with family gathered around the Wii U! I can feel it!
I went early this morning to my local Target to pick up SM3DW. So far, I've played the first two stages of the first world and just getting used to the Cat controls. And although they were the first two levels, they were pretty lengthy which is only promising for the rest of the game.
I'm going to indulge all this weekend in the single player mode and will have the Wii U set up for multiplayer mayhem in the living room for next week's holiday.
(I didn't get A Link Between Worlds today and will not make the purchase until fully indulging into 3D World. Although I could purchase both now, it would just be too much gaming goodness. It would be difficult to choose what to game with my little free time. So first up, 3D World to give the Wii U some love. Then, adventure awaits on my 3DS! Good times!)
And I'm surprised that NSMB2 took sixteen weeks to reach the 1 million mark! Perhaps it's due to the fact that it was released in the Summer and not during the holiday season like SM3DL and MK7. And although it took the latter two titles four and six weeks, respectively, to reach the 1 million barrier, one has to consider that the 3DS install base was very small in Nov/Dec of 2011 compared to Oct 2013.
Market researchers are as valuable as color commentators for Football: they make their best guess at the beginning of the match to the best of their abilities but it doesn't necessarily mean that the match will turn out as said.
Great read. I was going to quote a section of the article but someone beat me to it.
I am totally with you on the stomping Goombas rather than shooting on CoD. Interestingly enough, I own NSMBU and BLOPS2 for my Wii U. And although I bought BLOPS2 for my family and friends (and it was on sale for $20), the retail game I've spent the most time with is NSMBU. If I were a teenager, there would be no doubt that I'd be indulging in CoD a la Street Fighter II in the 90's: they are the "It" games for their time. As a teenager, my attention span was fully focused on gaming. Now with life in the way, I just want to sit down, relax and play something familiar to me. After some intense work days, the last thing I need at the end of the day is some more intense, often tedious, action.
I've only been a Wii U owner for over a month and I've only purchased two retail games (NSMBU & BLOPS2) so I don't have much to say about it's first year. I'm just hoping that the next year will be healthier and better.
I don't think Nintendo was ready for the HD era. Or rather, they didn't have experience in it and had the misfortune of games being released later than anticipated. And now that they have more experience, I'm really hoping that they find success as I'd love to see the full potential of the Wii U and the promise of unique gaming experiences come to fruition.
Also, March/April '14 can't come soon enough as I love Mario Kart and can't wait for MK8!
Denver was a busy town last night! With this and the Broncos/Chiefs game going on, the town was rocking! If I had a choice of which event to attend, I'd easily go to this than the big NFL game of the year. But that's just me
@DestinyMan True. But honestly, a 30 second commercial is not enough time to show all the awesome games the 3DS has to offer.
@sevex I can see how the children in the commercial can make us veteran gamers feel old. But Ninty doesn't have to advertise to us. We know how great this system is. This commercial is mainly an attempt to get children to want a 3DS(2DS) for the holidays. Pretty smart I'd say.
Off topic: The console wars now remind me of 2006. And if I recall, back then, Sony was saying that the PS3 was built to be a 10 year machine. I guess they couldn't wait till 2016 but they should have. Realistically, I don't see any must have games for PS4, One, or U for that matter. With so many ways to game, many consumers are better off waiting then going "next gen." The current gen has so many great games IMO so I don't see the PS4 or One flying off the shelves like in the past. It'll be different this time sales wise.
@JebbyDeringer What I have come to learn with portable Nintendo games it's that it's never fair to compare screenshots from a website/magazine to the actual screen of the system. Although the art style may seem poor from various pics, I'll reserve my judgement until having this game in my hand and seeing the actual gameplay from the 3DS' screen(s).
Target is great! It's my go-to place for retail games. They usually have some great deals every week. I heard that they maybe doing buy 2 get 1 free for Black Friday. If that's the case, I'll be there.
Great review! One of my all time arcade favorites. And now that I have it on my Wii (on my Wii U through the Wii Channel), this is easily one of my go to games to play when I have some downtime. To keep it old school, I only allow myself one credit and no continues ever to see how far I can go with one try.
Also, I find it sad that I play this more on my Wii U than any other game that is intended for the Wii U : /
My level of excitement that I have for this game is the same level that I get when a new Virtual Console game goes on sale on the Wii U eShop that I've had stored in my Wii Vitual Console for years: not too excited. With Virtual Console games, I pay another $1.50-$1.00 to have the ability to play the game directly from the Wii U main menu, play on the game pad, and post thoughts and pics on Miiverse. For $10 per sport, I can essentially do the same things listed above. I still have my Wii Sports disc copy that I've had since 2006 that I can still play on my new Wii U so I think I'll just stick with that.
What's also preventing me from making the purchase is that I invested heavily in the system early and now I have to pay more for better enjoyment. Within the six months of the Wii's system launch, I purchase three Wii Remotes, a Nunchuck, four classic controllers (not the pro), two Wii Wheels, and the Wii Balance Board. Since Nintendo sold me on the new Wii U and that all old Wii controllers would be compatible with the system, I made the jump. But I also made the mistake in investing in the 8GB (so all controllers and system would be the same color; they didn't offer black Wii's in the early days) thinking I can buy physical copies of all full retail games offered. Now, I'm realizing that if I want to truly enjoy this game as intended, I need to buy 1-4 motion control plus adaptors, an exterior hard drive, and the game(s). All of these things together can easily add up to about another $150 I'll need to spend. Maybe $120...since I'd really only purchase bowling and tennis. Anyhow, end of rant.
EDIT: Surprisingly, this game doesn't require too much memory and I was able to download on my 8GB Wii U with room to spare. So I wouldn't need an external hard drive, but I still need a Wii motion plus adapters plus purchase of sport which can be anywhere from $20 to $60.
Interesting. It seems that Japan likes to get fit and party...enough to pick up a Wii U. I really hope sales pick up Worldwide as I will like to see the full potential of this system with future software.
In the first holiday the Wii came out in 2006, what I believe helped the system create a snowball effect was word of mouth. Families, mine included, were being exposed to Wii and Wii Sports during the holiday get togethers. That created a strong word of mouth that would result in Wii systems flying off shelves. The problem with the Wii U is that it hasn't had that home run software that has "wowed" people. With so many different ways to game nowadays, it's hard to get the attention of the casual gamer that helped Nintendo's sales back then. With the exception of the 3DS, I don't see any dedicative gaming system reaching sales numbers of years past. And we have tablets and smartphones to thank for that.
There's no advertisement that can create a buzz. The buzz has to come from the experience of playing the system and sadly I haven't felt it.
"According to the study, increases of game-playing adults’ brain volumes were found in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and cerebellum. These locations are responsible for functions including spatial recognition, memory formation, strategic planning and finely tuned hand motor skills."
Personal philosophy: if you're good at video games, you're good at driving.
No joke! I've lived by these words and I've yet to be wrong in my hypothesis! Spatial recognition, strategic planning, and finely tuned hand & motor skills are essential for safe driving and this study proves that gaming improves those qualities.
I've had a Wii U for a couple of weeks now and I still haven't had a "wow" moment like most Nintendo products usually provide. I had a wow moment with the touch screen gaming on DS, with Wii Sports on the Wii, with the 3D on the 3DS. But with the Wii U, not yet. I'm hoping this game will wow me.
I'm really saddened by this news but I understand and see how many can misuse the service. Swapnote/Letterbox was a great service for me! I'd share silly pics and send little notes to other relatives and friends! I did post my FC here on this site but only exchanged codes with cool people on this site! I'm going to miss receiving random notes from friends and from the Nintendo staff.
It was a great service. Hopefully they can bring it back, or something similar, with better parental tools to prevent risk to children and adolescents.
Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 did help Nintendo move some 3DS systems in the 2011 holiday season. Can Super Mario 3D World along with Wii Party U, Wii Fit U, Wii Sports Club, plus Pikmin 3 and Windwaker...help the Wii U sell systems in a similar way? That is the question.
I'm glad that they are taking their time with Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and not rush it like Mario Kart 7. Nintendo could've easily decided to release Mario Kart 8 in time for the holiday season and would've helped the Wii U sell more systems. I think once that game is released and they see the results after, that's when they'll decide the long term course of the system. At least, I hope they do that. I really don't think 3D World alone, as great of a game that it can be, will not help Nintendo sell Wii U's. But I sure hope I am wrong.
I just recently purchased a Wii U and bought a handful of NES, SNES from the Wii U eShop at the discounted price since I had all these titles on the Wii and transferred them over. I wanted to purchase to see how they played on the game pad screen. After playing a bit with the titles, I decided that it wasn't worth the $1.00-1.50 to repurchase. All you get is the ability to play on the game pad, save points, and Miiverse support. Also, I don't like the slight lag on the controls when playing on the game pad. Very annoying!
From now on, I'm only planning to buy games that are not on my Wii Virtual Console and original download only titles from the Wii U eShop. Retail games I'll still purchase at stores.
Just curious...Has anyone else noticed how some Virtual Console games controls' when played on the Wii U game pad are not as responsive as they should be? I'm playing the original Super Mario Bros. on my Wii U game pad at the moment and notice that there's some kind of delay in the controls response that's causing me to lose lives in levels that I've mastered for years!
There needs to be some sort of update to fix this otherwise I don't see myself buying anymore virtual console games for the Wii U. I'll just go to the 100+ Virtual Console games I already have on my Wii!
Still playing around with my Wii U I got a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, I find myself going to the Wii mode and playing all my old school virtual console games more than the new games. I wish they wouldn't charge the $1.00-1.50 for being able to play your purchased virtual console Wii games on the game pad. I purchased a handful of titles to test out playing the games in the game pad and I'm sad to say that the controls for some game are not as responsive as they should be. Example, the original Super Mario Bros. is a game I know extremely well and was shocked at the amount of times I lost a life because of the controls not being responsive! It's annoying! Going forward, I think I'll just be downloading games from the eshop that are not available on the Wii Shop Channel.
With that said, I think I'll be playing some Super Castlevania IV!
The original Shinobi for arcade! It wouldn't improve the game but it would look cool in 3D since the main character jumps in and out of the background in certain levels. Plus the bonus stage would look awesome!
"It's in the drop-in multiplayer where Nintendo may have finally hit the golden formula to enable families and friends to play together without irrevocable damage to relationships."
When this game was first announced, I was not excited as I already had 3D Land on 3DS and wasn't really looking forward to playing this sort of game again on an HD system.
When the second trailer was introduced, I started gaining interest.
Now, after reading this article for the preview, I am very excited. Multiplayer is fun, yet, challenging on the 2D Mario Wii (U). But I think the 3D Worlds in this game are going to be perfectly suited for multiplayer mayhem! I can't wait!
(With this and A Link between Worlds releasing on the same day, I am going to be in gaming bliss this holiday )
The Wii had great momentum before its releases as people wanted to see what motion gaming was all about. That momentum ran for a couple of years as it was one of the hardest systems to find on the market '06-'08. Definitely a game changer!
I've had a Wii U for about two weeks and sadly I haven't felt that game changing experience. I'm not a Pikmin fan and 101 doesn't appeal to me. And the Windwaker is just an HD remake of one of my least favorite Zeldas. The right game needs to come along that shows what the system is all about. As of now, I still think it's like an HD 3DS without the 3D.
The opinion piece from the Washington Post is almost a cry to copyright law. Instead of SMB being public after 28 years of copyright, it will not be public until the year 2082 due to a loophole that allows corporate authors like Nintendo to copyright their intellectual properties for 95 years.
All in all, it's very flattering that this student made this game on a web browser. Super Mario Bros. has been referred by many game designers as the game that inspired them to be game creators and is often to be referred as a masterpiece and a blueprint for game design. Designers have even argued that you are not a good game designer if you never played Super Mario Bros.
Quality is quality. And you usually pay for it. Quality is usually protected heavily, hence, Mario, the biggest videogame character that was known more than Mickey Mouse in the 80's, is going to be heavily protected. As said, it's flattering that Mario continues to inspire young minds, it's also heavily protected and with great reason. If there were no copyright, it'll be 1983 all over again and Mario's popularity would evaporate with the vast poor quality of clones IMO.
When Nintendo went digital with their retail titles, I was opposed and claimed that I'd always purchase physical copies. With the 3DS, surprisingly, I decided to go digital as I just loved the thought of being able to have all my library without the need to bring my carts along.
With the Wii U, it'll be a different story. I only have the 8GB model and plan to only download Virtual Console games. Retail games I can have in disc format since I won't be bringing along my system with me everywhere as I do with my 3DS. I really want to avoid an external hard drive but I know with more digital only games in the future it might be needed.
I may consider getting this game (in disc format of course). With the holidays around the corner, this could be great fun for the family.
Just purchased a Wii U and passed NSMBU. Just purchased BLOPS 2 so I will be giving it a shot since I've never played. Plus, it was only $19.99 at Target! I couldn't pass up such a deal
Honestly, when this game was announced at E3 along with the trailer, I was underwhelmed like many. This latest trailer captured my interests a bit. But after looking at these still pics of the game, all I can say is "Wow!"
Personally, it's funny to me that trailers don't get me excited as much as pictures do. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I'm older and grew up looking at video game magazines before streaming video became the norm. Nonetheless, I am officially excited for this game

The retail power of Pokemon!
And I'm surprised that NSMB2 took sixteen weeks to reach the 1 million mark! Perhaps it's due to the fact that it was released in the Summer and not during the holiday season like SM3DL and MK7. From now on, I'm only planning to buy games that are not on my Wii Virtual Console and original download only titles from the Wii U eShop. Retail games I'll still purchase at stores.

@unrandomsam Thanks for that info! Good to know for future reference.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Nineteen
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Nineteen
Re: SEGA's Retro Remakes Down to Fans for "Next Lineup"
The original Shinobi for arcade! It wouldn't improve the game but it would look cool in 3D since the main character jumps in and out of the background in certain levels. Plus the bonus stage would look awesome!
Re: Preview: Super Mario 3D World
"It's in the drop-in multiplayer where Nintendo may have finally hit the golden formula to enable families and friends to play together without irrevocable damage to relationships."
Re: Soapbox: The Wii Changed The Face of Gaming, Before The Console Industry Promptly Forgot Its Lessons
Re: Nintendo Wants To Close Down This Open-Source Web Version Of Super Mario Bros.

Re: Refurbished 3DS Systems on Sale at Nintendo Online Store
I may purchase the purple one as a holiday gift. It's a great deal!
Re: Rumour: Sony Running Campaign To Push Potential Wii U Buyers Towards PS4 And Vita
In the US, one can get a Vita for $200 + a game and the PS4 will retail for $400 when released. With a 10% discount, that'll be roughly $540.
So, you can get an HD Nintendo system for $300 or pay $240 more for a beefier HD system. The choice is yours.
Re: Wii Party U Gets It Started With a Relatively Hefty File Size

I gladly look forward to the challenge.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Eighteen
Just purchased a Wii U and passed NSMBU. Just purchased BLOPS 2 so I will be giving it a shot since I've never played. Plus, it was only $19.99 at Target! I couldn't pass up such a deal

Golf or Tennis anyone?
Re: If You Liked the Latest Super Mario 3D World Trailer, You'll Love the New Screens
Re: Feature: A Week of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS Screens - Issue Seven
@Chris720 It seems that they only show one 3DS screen shot every two weeks. I wonder why they show way more Wii U screenshots than the 3DS?
