The release date you may or may not have been anticipating has arrived! Yes, that's right – Nintendo has officially announced Mario Kart Tour will arrive on Android and iOS on 25th September.
To prepare for the game's launch, Nintendo has set up a brand new twitter account:
Mario Kart World Tour is able to be pre-loaded on iOS, but there's no sign of it just yet on Google Play. For now, here's some additional information, directly from Apple's store:
- Mario Kart takes a world tour!
Mario and friends go global in this new Mario Kart as they race around courses inspired by real-world cities in addition to classic Mario Kart courses! These destinations will be featured in tours that rotate every two weeks! In addition to courses based on iconic locales, some of your favorite Mario Kart characters will get variations that incorporate the local flavor of cities featured in the game!
- Endless Mario Kart fun at your fingertips!
The Mario Kart series known and loved by many is ready to take the world by storm – one smart device at a time! With just one finger, you can steer and drift with ease, sling devastating items as you go for the gold in cups filled with new and classic Mario Kart courses.
Nab 1st place with items and Frenzy mode!
In Mario Kart Tour you have access to an arsenal of powerful items that can mix things up on the racetrack! Turn up the heat by activating the new Frenzy mode, which gives an unlimited supply of a certain item and makes you invincible! Make the most of the ensuing chaos, as Frenzy mode only lasts a short time!
- Collect drivers, karts, badges, and more!
Earn Grand Stars by racing or fire off the featured pipe to receive more drivers, karts, and gliders! You can also proudly display badges, earned by completing certain challenges, next to your in-game name!
- Bonus challenge courses put a twist on traditional races!
In certain races, 1st place isn't always the goal. With names like "Vs. Mega Bowser" and "Goomba Takedown," these bonus challenge courses demand a different approach to gameplay and strategy!
- Race to increase your online rank!
Boost with the best of 'em! Your high scores will determine how you compare to other players all over the world. Keep practicing and trying out different combinations of drivers, karts, and gliders to increase your score and rise to the top!

From the beta footage I'm not really impressed tbh.
I'll give it a shot.
Played the beta once, had enough.
I'm sure it'll make a lot of money on the brand alone, but meh.
Yes I’ll give it a go. Would love a new Mario kart game. It’s been over 5 years
after playing the beta i am looking forward to this game.
I've missed it, it's not the best game in the world but it was fun til i hit that beta/pay wall.
I did let the game play itself to grind for supplies.
Eh, I don’t know. I saw the beta footage, and it doesn’t really catch my eye.
Mobile games?!
Meh.
Maybe, we'll see.
Not for me, but at least Nintendo still makes quality mainline games in addition to these little cash grabby distractions. cough EA, Ubisoft, and Bethesda.
edit: but that doesn’t make it right. Nintendo should really get flak for degrading their IPs like this. I know it’s a business, but their ethos has always held quality above all else. That is what kept them afloat for this long.
Probably not.... I hope that it will be used more as a marketing tool for an MK9 to be released in 2020....
I wonder what caused this game to have such a large gap between the closed beta they did and the full release?
The game should have partnered with Google Maps and track people in their cars so they could race other Mario Kart Tour users on actual roads.
after the Beta, I was given a survey. there were like 20 questions about microtransactions, and I'm very worried.
Not too stoked about mobile Nintendo games ,, especially anything that’s pay to play. That said, sometimes it brightens my day to get some quick Nintendo distraction on my phone. It warms my heart. Bring it on!?
I'm not particularly excited for it but I suppose I'll give it a download. Really hoping this somehow paves the way for the next main series entry.
Mario Kart 9 please. Not interested in playing a mobile Mario Kart
Where’s the trailer?
@1UP_MARIO God, I forget how old MK8 really is. We really need a new Mario Kart, I get there's usually only one per console, but MK8D hardly stands as a new Mario Kart game. I'll play MK Tour, but I don't play games on my phone often despite how many I have downloaded, so it's likely to get shelved quickly.
There is far too much wrong with the game after I played the beta. For one, you think hanging in 1st place the entire time is good? Think again. The game is based on hitting high scores, but one of the main point increases comes from spamming Frenzy. How do you get Frenzy? Certainly not in 1st place. You literally have to hang back at the beginning of each lap for a better chance at Frenzy (and that's only if you have the right character I think), then push your way back up to 1st before you get to the next lap. Nothing stops you from doing that because you don't play against actual people. You play against their stats.
How sad is that?
I forgot this wasn't out.
I played the beta...I LOVE Mario kart.
I look forward to the next proper game in the series.
Good thing I have a Switch.... But damn they had to sell out and make a sequel on mobile instead of a brand new one on Switch..
I still stick on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as my favorite.
Are they freaking serious?!
Locked vertical orientation for a kart racer?
Morons. Absolute morons. Newsflash: horizontal orientation would not only lend itself better to a more natural perspective (as human eyes, like that of most creatures, are horizontally oriented), but also for tilt-based controls, which I assume will be the default control scheme.
Presumed microtransactions aside (ugh... I would have paid up for a "full" game), I'm stunned that they could monumentally screw up Mario Kart like this.
Could be a decent time killer if it plays alright.
Oh, right!! ^.^
I expected that date, then, preparing space for my device!!
However, from what was shown in those beta videos of the game, I would really be disappointed if that was the only way to drive in that game, really, for me, there it doesn't feel like a racing game, it's awful..., sorry; I hope it has other options to drive, oh well ...
@kepsux same. Tried the beta. Their one-handed gameplay controls are no fun.
After about 10 minutes I had enough.
Their are racing games with decent controls schemes on mobile, surely Mario Kart could have worked :/
The "logic" of Nintendo's decision to make it vertical is to make it one-handed so people standing on crowded trains in Japan can easily play.
That app store description sounds like not much has changed since the beta. I'm disappointed if that is truly the case, as there were many major issues that require addressing to change this from a mediocre mobile game to a solid Mario Kart game playable on the phone.
Aso g as it's fun to play for 10 minutes on a commute and it has the faster cc speeds, I'm all for it.
@rockodoodle It will..I hope...
It looks like they upgraded things from the Beta I played.... At least the models. May play again, but I was kinda done after a little bit on the beta, fun in short spurts but I'd rather play Sudoku, or Mágica Record (if I don't have my switch on me)
Hopefully in Mario Kart 9 we will get character costumes like how Mario and Peach are wearing! Maybe even character specific items?
I'm completely not made for mobile games. Even when I download one, I use it only once or twice, then erase it. So, this "chapter" really doesn't excite me. I hope for MK9 on Switch, but I know I'm a dreamer.
Vertical racer? Microtransactions, lootboxes? well... skip I will.
Visually it looks like a Wii era title, and why on earth do Nintendo insist on making their telephone games in portrait mode? We see in widescreen. Portrait is useful for one thing - lists. It's absurd for gaming, especially games as inherently wide in scope as racing games. Nintendo really should be better than this, they're not Zynga, or at least they shouldn't be.
Saying all of that, this will inevitably be "free" to play and absolutely loaded with pay walls, begging screens, and gambling, so it's probably for the best that it's so unappealing.
@kepsux
How long does it take to rotate a phone? Under a second. And to save people that terrible inconvenience they force games into incredibly narrow screens and make any sort of comfortable controls (an oxymoron on a touch screen admittedly) totally impossible.
I tried their telephone version of Animal Crossing and found the screen ratio so irritating I deleted it after 5 minutes. I won't even bother downloading this.
I think theres something wrong with bowsers jaw in the picture showcasing Mario and friends driving on the planet 🤔
@ChompyMage that's because you don't want to play it on your phone.. Neither do I. It looks cute thought but I won't go near it. I prefer gaming on just consoles and not mobiles (especially for people like me who don't have a controller or whatever for mobile gaming, I don't want it!)
Player specific specials? looking nice, shame its not MarioKart 9
Not aimed at me, but it looked rather nice.
@ramu-chan I think the reasoning behind this is that you can't play one handed in landscape mode. If you are on a crowded train you need a free hand to hold on to something.
I just can't get excited for this at all, hopefully it means we'll get some Mario Kart 8 content or Mario Kart 9 given that Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing both did the same
Oh the Double Dash special power ups are back and there's a Waluigi Pinball track! I'll give it a go but this is just making me crave Mario Kart 9 on Switch so bad!
@ramu-chan it's not about time, it's about space and being able to operate the phone with one hand on a crowded moving train while holding on to a handstrap. I'm not defending the decision, I'm explaining where they are coming from.

@gokev13 had the same idea, generate tracks based on players location using maps
I’ll give it 5 mins here and there like I do with Run. Agree with others it could be so much more but it is what it is and for 5 mins at work or on the loo it’ll do the job
Will get it for sure. Looks fun.
I get the feeling this game is not gonna do very well... plus it doesn't even have a versus mode to race against a friend(s) online, at least Dr.Mario has that.
@ramu-chan : Puzzle games and even Super Mario Run with vertical orientation, I can understand (in fact, Super Mario Run was quite cleverly designed that it certainly works in its favour), but a racer... a friggin' racer... with vertical orientation is virtually unheard of for the genre, and is completely counterintuitive, where an awareness of your surrounding is crucial to its mastery.
Can you imagine if the classic DOOM games on mobile were vertically oriented and you could only see the threats directly in front of you in glorious TunnelVision™?
Nintendo is usually more QoL oriented than most, so I am utterly dumbfounded at the sheer stupidity of this.
@Silly_G Blimey I thought Mario Run was next to impossible due to the portrait screen. Everything had to be reduced to such a small size to fit and there was a ton of wasted space above and below.
I'd struggle to think of any video game which works at all in portrait. We see in widescreen. Portrait just feels claustrophobic, cramped, forced, and unnatural.
Wow, a mobile game that I actually am interested in playing. It looks solid. 🙂
Racing games would make more sense in portrait if they were specifically designed for taking long straightaways quickly. Like... early F-Zero.
Mario Kart's whole thing has always been having more turns so it still seemed fast when it had to be way slower, so I'll agree in theory it wouldn't work that great, but there's definitely some uses for portrait.
.....why do they get the alternative costume thing right on the MOBILE game and not the games in the series that actually MATTER???
Oh well. It looks alright, I might give it a try but I won't be spending too much time on it because I really do not like playing games on my phone.
I rather have Mario all-star racing (mariokart with Mario, Link, Kirby, Starfox etc) on the Switch!
