As part of Nintendo's latest financial report, which has revealed that the Nintendo Switch has now sold a mighty 41.67 million units worldwide, the company has released an updated list of its best-selling games on the system.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still the console's best-seller, but there are a couple of changes to be seen since the last update we received earlier this year. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has edged ahead of Super Mario Odyssey, and 1-2 Switch and Mario Tennis Aces have lost their positions in the top ten to Super Mario Maker 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
You can see the full top ten below (bear in mind that the data only references Nintendo-published titles).
Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games (as of 30th September 2019):
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 19.01 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 15.71 million
- Super Mario Odyssey - 14.54 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 13.61 million
- Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! / Let's Go, Eevee! - 11.28 million
- Splatoon 2 - 9.28 million
- Super Mario Party - 7.59 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - 4.59 million
- Super Mario Maker 2 - 3.93 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - 3.13 million
It's worth noting that those numbers above are worldwide sales and include retail, digital, and copies bundled with hardware all combined.
Any surprises? We imagine Pokémon Sword and Shield will have something to say about this list in the next update. Share your thoughts on the top ten below.

Mario Kart 8 figures are impressive, considering many of us double-dipped.
Mario Kart 8 - the Grand Theft Auto V of Nintendo games.
We are never getting Mario Kart 9 indeed.
@Moroboshi876
Also consider that the Wii U had awful sales in general, and the original release of Mario Kart 8 sold at least 8.44 million copies.
It cannot be understated how important the system sales are.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses also managed 2.29 million
Super Mario Party in top 10 and not a single update / DLC for it.
ARMS needs more love from gamers.
> Mario Kart 8 DX is now the 3rd best-selling Mario Kart game.
> Fire Emblem Three Houses is now the 2nd best-selling Fire Emblem game.
> Link's Awakening 2019 has outsold Link's Awakening DX and will very quickly overtake the 1993 original.
> Breath of the Wild is going to outsell Mario Odyssey at it's current sales trajectory.
More copies of maria kart 8 sold on switch than Wii U systems sold
@RupeeClock Of course. And 8 million copies there, out of 14 million systems, was already a great number. But what I mean is 19 million is amazing for a re-released game anyway.
@Anti-Matter I disagree, especially in comparison to the ten in the article. It's a very mediocre game, and probably my only physical title on Switch that I would consider selling or trading.
It makes me sad that Xenoblade 2 didn't make the list. But I guess people just don't have the time to put into a big story game like that. It's my absolute favorite game on Switch. At least until Xenoblade 1 remastered drops next year. XD
Pokemon Sword and Shield are easily gonna get on this list and will probably pass Pokemon Let's Go Pikavee.
If Mario Maker 2 had come out before NSMBU, I don't think NSMBU would have even made the list and I think Mario Maker 2 would have sold better. But since a bunch of people had already bought NSMBU, I bet a bunch of people said "Oh, I just bought a 2D Mario game a couple months ago, I don't need another one right now."
Another thing to note is that 5 games on this list have broken 10 million! With MK8DX probably slated to break 20 million.
@gamer89 how astral chain didn’t break the million?!
It seemed to be selling so well
“But but who’s going to buy an overpriced re-skin of an ancient Gameboy game??!!!?!??”
3.13m people as of the end of September and counting.
EDIT: That was just in one week. Wow.
@Nightwalker laughs in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
"We're never getting Mario Kart 9"
Not with THAT attitude, we're not!
I am 100% OK with not seeing Mario Kart 9 on Switch. MK8D is the best Mario Kart by a fair margin. No need for a sequel anytime soon.
Now, more MK8D DLC is something I'd be down with.
@Heavyarms55 You are right, Xenoblade 2 has been on my wish list since its release, and it looks amazing, but I just can't see putting in 50+ hours into a game with so many good smaller games. My last big game was a FF that I liked, but after 40 hours I was ready for it to be finished.
Also, I agree on MM2 v NSMBU, I am so glad I waited for MM2. It is a great game.
@gamer89
In this quarter BOTW sold around 0,9 million and SMO around 0,4 million. The math isn’t that hard with this one.
Also the sales for BOTW and SMO in the article are wrong when compared to the official nintendo site.
One that impressed me the most is Super Mario Party!
@gamer89 That’s not gonna please that one person who seemed hellbent on convincing everyone that FE: Three Houses flopped.
The argument could be made that with great sales for MK8, it makes sense to make a MK9.
Yes, sales would obviously drop for MK8, but since nintendo knows that Mario Kart is always going to sell well, then why not go back to the well and make a successful game? Also, it could boost console sales.
I could see a MK 9 dropping in a year or two.
@Markiemania95
But ARMS is one of my Favorite new Nintendo IP because i have strong interest with Boxing. 🤓
ARMS was a rare gem i can found when Boxing games were absent on 3DS and Wii U.
Those top 5 software unit sales are nuts. Besides Pokemon and Animal Crossing, I doubt any other Nintendo IP has enough muscle to get up in the 10 million plus region.
@Digitamamon64
Splatoon 2 and Mario Maker 2 should be able to reach the 10 million units milestone.
@westman98 Honestly skipped right over splatoon, but I'm not sure about Mario Maker. I thought it'd have higher sales at this point. But it is an evergreen title so we'll see. I'm also surprised about Mario Party. Sold more than I expected it to.
@Digitamamon64
That's the thing with Nintendo software - most of their games sell off of strong legs, not necessarily massive 1st day/week/month sales.
For example, Mario Kart 8 DX sold ~1.3 million copies in its first week and ~3.5 million copies in its first 2 months, which is a great result but far from mindblowing. Now, 2.5 years later, it has sold 19 million copies, and it is continues to sell strongly to this day.
Mario Maker is no Mario Kart, but we should absolutely not dismiss its long-term selling potential.
@westman98
True. It's the power of Nintendo's software.
@gamer89 Which is good, but not quite top 10 best selling Switch games, good.
Nice to see Splatoon is up their with the big three. Still suspect the list will include another pokemon andanimal crossing in the next update
7/10 and others i'm not even interested ^^
Maybe they should just make Nintendo Kart. They already started breaking through that wall with Mario Kart 8 already. A Metroid themed track, Splatoon themed track, Pikmin themed track, Earthbound, Starfox, etc. As much as I love the Mario Kart tradition branching it out to more IP's would probably be awesome. Mario Kart 8 DLC already showed us what it could be like and it was great.
Awesome numbers! Super Smash Bros. Is a beast. I’m surprised to seen that Link’s Awakening did so well!
Luigi's Mansion 3 and Pokemon S/S will sell over 4 million copies between release and January 1st pushing out Mario Maker and Links Awakening.
Animal Crossing will be the first 2020 game to make the top 10 list as well.
@dugan Diminishing returns. Mario Kart games are imperfect but very close substitutes for one another much like Super Smash Bros. games. There’s never more than one Mario Kart game per console, no matter how early the first one comes out and how well it sells. Franchise fatigue is a real thing.
A lot of good numbers. I think Pokémon Sword and Shield will be the only thing that could possibly decrown Mario Kart (it’s two games and it’s coming out shortly before Christmas so its chances are better than anything else). Also surprised to see Mario Maker not doing that well, though it’s never been through the holiday season and it’s not as optimal as the Wii U instalment (online costs money and there’s no gamepad). NSMBUD’s days on the top 10 are probably numbered.
Has Mario Odyssey lost 400,000 sales??
It's-a me, Money-o!
The numbers for BotW and Mario Odyssey are incorrect. They should be 14.54 and 15.38 respectively. Also shows that both are selling fairly steadily, it’s not likely that Breath of the Wild ever passes Odyssey.
Here's how much each title sold between July 1st-September 30th in the Top 10
MK8DX 1.12 million (17.89 million-19.01 million)
SSBU .98 million (14.71 million-15.71 million)
SMO .44 million (14.94 million-15.38 million)
LOZ BOTW .93 million (13.61 million-14.54 million)
PLG .30 million (10.98 million-11.28 million)
Splatoon 2 .26 million (9.02 million-9.28 million)
SMP .60 million (6.99 million-7.59 million)
NSMUDX .49 million (4.10 million-4.59 million)
SMM2 1.51 million (2.42 million-3.93 million)
LInk's Awakening 3.13 million (0-3.13 million)
@gamer89
By the end of 2017,
> Breath of the Wild (NSW): 6.70 million
> Super Mario Odyssey: 9.07 million
By September 2019,
> Breath of the Wild (NSW): 14.54 million (+7.84 million)
> Super Mario Odyssey: 15.38 million (+6.31 million)
Zelda is closing the gap on Mario despite the latter having a gigantic launch.
@Toy_Link Ah, I thought that Odyssey was only at 14.54 million before and not 14.94 million. That’s interesting, it looks like Zelda is indeed closing the gap. If it comes to be I think that will be the first time Zelda has outsold the main series Mario game on the same platform, quite impressive indeed. It remains to see whether it’s just a small boost thanks to the E3 teaser hype or if Zelda indeed outsells Odyssey.
Link's Awakening is impressive being at #10 with how short a time it has been out.
@Anti-Matter ARMS really does need more attention, but it also needs a price cut. This is my favorite game on Switch, however even I have to admit the content on offer doesn't feel like a $60 game. If they made it one of the first Nintendo Selects, I think it could see a reasonable sales spike.
1-2 Switch, and Mario Tennis Aces were both not very good, so that makes sense.
For some reason I thought Smash had already outsold Mario Kart, guess I got that wrong. Happy for Splatoon 2 being up there, it's the game I've played the most on both Switch and Wii U.
I'm very surprised at how well Smash Ultimate is selling. It's a fantastic smash game but I didn't expect it to outsell Brawl by this much this quickly with a smaller install base.
@judaspete Yeah I definitely agree about Arms needing a price cut. I got the game for about $40 used and thought that was fair. At $60 it just lacks enough content to justify that price point especially in comparison to 1st party titles like Splatoon 2, Super Mario Maker 2, BotW, Smash Ultimate, etc.
Those are just insane software numbers. And there are a few more games that have cracked 1M+ (Mario+Rabbids, Arms etc.) Links Awakening cracking 3M in such a short amount of time is really impressive too. 👍
@KryptoniteKrunch
There certainly is. 24 in total, according to this...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games?wprov=sfti1
Shame we won't ever get a list that includes 3rd party games. I can see games like Minecraft and Undertale making the list. But the devs are always hush-hush about their sales figures
@Anti-Matter why it was awful.
@koaeinferno
Awful to you but Brilliant games for me.
