I think DKR is perhaps the best kart racer ever. MK8D is realistically tied or a bit better, but DKR definitely deserves top 3 status in my opinion. I love that game so much. I really hope we see an NSO release, sequel, or HD port during the Switch 2's lifecycle.
I just want to give a shout out to Banana Blitz on the Wii for having easily the best soundtrack in the franchise. It is completely fully of bangers.
Unfortunately, Banana Blitz HD is missing about half of the soundtrack due to licensing issues. Seriously though, go listen to the Wii OST. It's peak SEGA.
I'm surprised the Nintendo Switch DX wasn't one of the guesses. I think the following are possible:
Nintendo Switch 2 (in this one rare instance, it might make sense to number the followup console)
Nintendo Switch DX (This would require strong marketing to educate consumers it isn't a Switch lol)
Something adjacent, like Nintendo Swap, or Nintendo Go, is possible, especially if they have a new gimmick to go along with it.
If I had to pick just one guess, my guess is Nintendo Go. It is similar, but different enough. The only issue with "Go" is that it doesn't tell you the system is much more powerful.
I'm really excited about this. I've always dreamed of a proper sequel (Paper Mario has a lot of fans, but I could never get into it) and this is the best chance we have of getting one. Also, there are some subtle clues in the trailer that the battle system has been enhanced - I saw splash damage, among other things. I really hope there's some harder difficulty scaling, and maybe the ability to go past level 30. My only complaint with SMRPG is that it was really basic in its RPG elements - I'd love to see that side of it fleshed out more.
For anyone who might not know this game, it's basically Final Fantasy Lite with Mario. It's nearly a perfect mix of Super Mario charm (and even some platforming!) and Final Fantasy combat, character growth, and epic story. It's not a deep, complex game like FF7 or other, newer RPGs, but it's got buckets of charm, hilarious dialogue, a wonderful soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura (of Kingdom Hearts fame) and is just a wonderful game overall.
I'm beyond excited about this. Super Mario RPG was my favorite game since it launched in 1996 until just recently, when Tears of the Kingdom begrudgingly had to take the crown for awhile... Will the remake win it back?
Also, this will be my chance to do the two things I never managed in the original - 100 Super Jumps, and that crazy jump in the Bean Valley to the vine with the other hidden item (Rare Scarf, I think). Both of these things must be done!
These people have been around for decades and might just want a break, lol. It probably has nothing to do with whatever the quality is of SV.
That said, I do miss the days when we got games like DPPt, B2W2, and the fantastic DS/3DS remakes. I can't get into any of the Switch Pokemon games, and I do think that Pokemon deserves less lazy games. However, I'm 37 now, and anyone who is near this age has to be honest about one thing - these games are no longer primarily aimed at us, lol. This is a kids franchise first and foremost, so I can't get too upset when the games they make aren't a perfect fit for me anymore.
Still... I really hope we'll see a BOTW-style renaissance for Pokemon that expands the franchise and makes everyone happy. I know they can do it - it's probably just a time issue. Take an extra year and really wow us!
Disgaea 1 is still my favorite of the series. 5 is definitely 2nd, and the rest are kind of forgettable for me.
I'm really glad the series is still going, but I wish each entry pulled me in more than they usually do. If I'm going to start a fresh playthrough, I'd still rather re-play the first game than any other and that is not really ideal for them, lol.
I'm surprised a fantastic port of maybe the greatest game ever gets an 8/10. This game is maybe the best value you can get for the price of entry. I'm a big fan of RPGs in general, but FF7 stands tall above the rest. It feels perfectly at home on the Switch, too. This has been my favorite play through, in fact. If you like turn-based RPGs, stories that really make you think about how we treat our world and mental illness, and don't mind spending 60+ hours playing an engaging RPG with tons of side content, you will probably enjoy this, even if you never played it many years ago.
I can't wait until the Pixel Remasters come out, so I can play through the first 10 FF games, in order, on my favorite console!
I'm excited for Sunbreak - beyond that, we are still waiting for an official Dragon's Dogma 2 reveal! Should see something this year if they haven't scrapped the project.
I'm okay with the cost of things if the release cadence stays at about 1 game per month for the first two or three years. By that point you start running out of good games to release lol. My concern is the N64 set will dry up after all previously revealed games are out. Even the Switch SNES is missing a ton of classic games still, like Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. Let's hope they don't stop with the N64 releases until we have a solid 25-30 titles at least.
This is a really great point. I was thinking about this the other day. Some of my absolute favorite Pokemon are now going to be either not available, or intermittently available in the upcoming generations of Pokemon. Prior to SwSh, I had a Jolteon, a Lapras, and a Vespiquen that followed me everywhere. A few of my other favorites are really niche Mon that are not supported on the Switch. This has broken 20 years of precedent and really soured my relationship with the series.
I have purchased additional copies of USUM and kept them sealed because I think the value of the 3DS games will skyrocket eventually as the last "true" Pokemon games.
I understand why they target ROM sites and such, but this is just such a bad look. I really don't think emulation impacts sales the way they think. I have a hacked Switch and goof off on there playing retro games, but I also own a legit Switch and a ton of Switch games. They probably got more money out of me because I wanted a second Switch just for emulation. Now that duty will move to the Steam Deck.
The more they fight with their loyal fans who just want to be able to play games like Double Dash that are no longer even sold, the more they will drive us away. It's such a bad plan for them. The other people who might emulate had no intention of buying anything else anyways.
That's the weird thing - Back in the USUM days, they had stated that they had worked on a project to bring all of the Pokemon into HD texture territory for use in future games. You don't have to re-make Pikachu from scratch for all of these Switch games - Pikachu is Pikachu. For a game series like this they should be building a big asset library and then modifying things slightly for each new game.
There are a number of reasons you might want to limit the Pokedex, but "there's too many Pokemon to code/art" is the most BS answer ever, especially when the games sell so well.
The tagline for the series, "Gotta Catch 'Em All" and the ability to carry your collection forward had been a staple of the series for nearly two decades. I have Pokemon that are old enough to legally drink. For many of us, this was a huge draw to the series. Knowing that all of the Mon I had captured, bred, and raised would be usable in future titles was the biggest draw for me.
I am fully aware that the series just isn't for me anymore. It's disappointing - I purchased Pokemon Blue on launch day as a 12 year old with lunch money I'd saved. I had played every mainline game up through USUM. The games coming out in recent years are decidedly different. It would seem a lot of people still enjoy them, so I'm happy for that. But they don't pull me in like they used to and it's been years since I bothered purchasing a Pokemon game. I used to take a week off work when a new game came out.
It is fine for different people to like different things, but I think your opinion that people should "grow up" because they miss a feature that was present for nearly two decades is a bit of a hot take.
I think I could swallow the price if there was a roadmap. They hinted at some great games coming, but when? And how often? I know PS Plus gets new games monthly, without fail. What will the cadence be with NSO? Because the NES/SNES offerings have been a disappointing trickle. If you want premium pay for your service, I want premium content scheduling. Promise me a new N64 game per month and tell me new systems will be added yearly and I'll feel a lot better about it.
I have mixed feelings with emulation. I really love it from a preservation standpoint. But then I see like 5 articles like this telling people they can just emulate a brand new game on PC and I get kind of mad. I participate in the emulation scene because it has some serious value to me but I also understand the importance of supporting the devs if we want them to keep making games. Basically, don't be a jerk. Don't emulate stuff like this unless you are actually dumping a cart you purchased.
The game is great, and I'm excited for Sunbreak, but I have a feeling MHGU will remain my favorite for a long time. If they can drastically increase the amount of quests and add G rank in Sunbreak that could change because I love the mechanics of Rise, but there's just a lot less to achieve currently compared to the previous entries.
In the world of collectibles, as in most worlds, price is whatever one person will sell for and another will pay. It's really that simple. Getting irritated because a sealed copy of a 30+ year old game sells for a ton of money... Why? Obviously you're not the target market and people are allowed to collect or sell the things they love. Especially in today's world of awesome, feature packed emulators it just feels unnecessary to fret about sealed games being locked away.
Anyone complaining about $28 for a live orchestra has no idea what kind of production costs and preparation go into these things. Especially considering that one "ticket" gets you access for as many people as you can cram into your house and hardly anyone goes to a show alone. I can't wait to see this! The FF7 Remake orchestra concert a few months back was amazing. I bet this one will be too.
This is cool, although I had originally assumed the Switch internals had been soldered into the case directly. That said, if the person who did this owns an early Switch they could absolutely run N64 games on here which would be fun. Let's see a video of them playing Diddy Kong Racing or OoT on here!
I have a couple of early Switches and a few docks, I might honestly try to replicate this. Thanks for the article!!
I'm surprised there is no power upgrade. I wasn't expecting 4k 60 FPS but I was hoping to be able to play games like BOTW without the random huge FPS drops. There are certain areas in that game that never reach 30 FPS. I at least figured we would get a modest power boost to enhance the performance of current games.
I definitely won't be buying this and will hold out for a proper revision.
I'm putting my money on "It's a licensing issue" with some of the other folks here. But even if it isn't - not a big deal. The reaction videos will be posted minutes after the presentation anyways.
Back when this game originally released, if you were a console gamer who liked ARPGs, this was basically your only choice. And the game is quite decent! I had a blast co-oping through this on the GameCube.
Fast forward to today, where the current consoles have Diablo 3, Titan Quest, soon D2 Resurrected and others... The game isn't really as good as any of those. I've played through every ARPG I just listed, some of them for thousands of hours. If you have $30 and you want a great ARPG D3 and TQ offer so much more than BG:DA.
That said, if you are a fan of the original release or really, really like Forgotten Realms, you will probably enjoy this. I'd still recommend waiting for a sale though, the game is very short.
Prior to BOTW, I was solidly in the "OoT for life" camp. I love that game. Wind Waker is another favorite. But man... BOTW really put Zelda in a whole new light for me. I can see why some people think it strays far from the formula, but BOTW feels like the ultimate Zelda experience to me. The only change I hope to see in BOTW2 is the inclusion of a few large, classic style dungeons. Sprinkle in two or three of those and i think we will see my new favorite Zelda game.
The people working on the homebrew software and enabling emulation on the Switch are an amazing community. You can bag on piracy all you want, but when I want to play a game that literally can't be purchased in any legit means, I'm not going to feel bad pirating it.
Also, you have to laugh when hackers can create these amazing Super Mario 64 ports with 60fps and a host of other features while Nintendo sells you an old ROM for $60. Makes you wonder who the real pirate is sometimes. And I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan saying this. I love them, but hating on the hacking scene doesn't really help them so I fail to see why they spend so much effort.
Yup, although that part was only a small segment at the end of the comic.
I own the original book and this is probably my favorite Nintendo memorabilia that I own. I will 100% be buying this, both to see if anything is different and also to use as a reading copy
Still have no idea why they never created a large open world platformer. I grew up with Mario, and the most exciting things were the books and comics like Super Mario Adventures, the Choose Your Own Adventure books, and the Valiant comics. If they could create a large, explorable Mushroom Kingdom with a real story it would be such a cool game.
I always expected Mario to go that direction after SM64... pretty much everything since hasn't been my cup of tea.
This is absolutely my favorite platformer and side-scroller of all time. Also in my top 5 favorite games of all time. The soundtrack is so good, I'd put it in my top 5 for that alone. It is amazing that games from over 20 years ago can still have more atmosphere than stuff released today.
Woooo! September 3rd is my birthday so it is totally going to be the best birthday ever lol. New album has me excited too, although the singles after Level 3 aren't grabbing me as much as JPN/Level 3 era did
Hey bud. Totally off topic.. but I am in love with your various Perfume avatars and wanted you to know I'll be seeing them in NY in September! Are you going to see them?
I just want the next main series game(s). I know a lot of people enjoy the spinoffs, but if isn't Snap, Stadium, or a main game, I'm not too interested lol.
Before I even argue with your main point, I'll start with this - Do you know him personally? You seem to be certain that his entire life is dedicated to SM64. How do you even know this is all he does?
Secondly, if he were living his life the way that you want, it'd be your life, not his. Frankly, if you want to be realistic, there is essentially nothing that we do that really matters. It is all about finding our own meaning in life. If he masters SM64 and you earn money or work hard, who's wrong? No one. You both did what you wanted.
Living your life the way somebody else would want is like the exact opposite of living, lol.
Interesting seeing Waluigi in that old school art, since he wasn't around in those days. I don't know why, but that style of art makes me really miss the NES/SNES Mario days...
Been dreaming of him and Cloud since the original Smash. Can't believe they are both going in lol. This is the ultimate smash game, I wonder if they'll do another...

Re: Nintendo Switch Was The Console With The Most Game Releases In 2023

It is crazy to me that Nintendo 64 had like 294 games released in its lifetime in the US, but the Switch gets 7-8x that in it's 6th YEAR lol.

I own the original book and this is probably my favorite Nintendo memorabilia that I own. I will 100% be buying this, both to see if anything is different and also to use as a reading copy
Re: E3 2016: New Kind Of Mario Game Is Coming, Says Shigeru Miyamoto
Still have no idea why they never created a large open world platformer. I grew up with Mario, and the most exciting things were the books and comics like Super Mario Adventures, the Choose Your Own Adventure books, and the Valiant comics. If they could create a large, explorable Mushroom Kingdom with a real story it would be such a cool game.
I always expected Mario to go that direction after SM64... pretty much everything since hasn't been my cup of tea.
Re: Disney Infinity Has Been Cancelled
@rjejr
NMS on NX would be amazing, right? But this weird "PC and Sony" limitation makes me think Sony did something to earn that exclusivity as well.
Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (New 3DS / SNES)
This is absolutely my favorite platformer and side-scroller of all time. Also in my top 5 favorite games of all time. The soundtrack is so good, I'd put it in my top 5 for that alone. It is amazing that games from over 20 years ago can still have more atmosphere than stuff released today.

@Ryu_Niiyama
Woooo! September 3rd is my birthday so it is totally going to be the best birthday ever lol. New album has me excited too, although the singles after Level 3 aren't grabbing me as much as JPN/Level 3 era did

@Ryu_Niiyama
Hey bud. Totally off topic.. but I am in love with your various Perfume avatars and wanted you to know I'll be seeing them in NY in September! Are you going to see them?
Re: Tadpole Treble is Expected to Launch in March on the Wii U eShop
Totally reminds me of Tadpole Pond from Super Mario RPG... or the music creator in Mario Paint.
Pretty neat idea, though.
Re: Nintendo Announces a Pokémon Direct to Get the Celebrations Started
I just want the next main series game(s). I know a lot of people enjoy the spinoffs, but if isn't Snap, Stadium, or a main game, I'm not too interested lol.
7th Gen please!
Re: Weirdness: Super Mario 64 Expert Collects a Star in 0.5 'A' Button Presses
@kurtasbestos
Re: Nintendo Download: 7th January (North America)
@allav866
Fair enough, and you are probably right. I'm only noticing because SMRPG and Wave Race like my two favorite games, lol.
Re: Review: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Wii U eShop / SNES)
Super Mario RPG is my favorite game of all time. The rest of my favorites are jumbled mess, but this one game is the uncontested champion.
Always wondered where the hell Paper Mario came from, because games in the same vein as this would have been so much better.
Re: Nintendo Download: 7th January (North America)
So... no Super Mario RPG or Wave Race 64? For the first time basically ever, I'm starting to be jealous of EU releases lol.
Re: Review: Game & Watch Gallery Advance (Wii U eShop / GBA)
Interesting seeing Waluigi in that old school art, since he wasn't around in those days. I don't know why, but that style of art makes me really miss the NES/SNES Mario days...
Re: Feature: Five Star Wars Games, on Nintendo, That Are Strong in the Force
Rogue Squadron and Shadows of the Empire... man I loved the N64.
Re: Final Mii Fighter Costumes and Hats Detailed for Super Smash Bros.
@PlywoodStick
Been dreaming of him and Cloud since the original Smash. Can't believe they are both going in lol. This is the ultimate smash game, I wonder if they'll do another...
Re: Cloud Will be Available to Buy 'Within Hours' of Sakurai's Final Presentation for Super Smash Bros.
Omg Geno costume. My life is complete lol.
