Re: So, What Does Embracer Group Actually Own The Rights To?

gaga64

Important to note that, for example, a lot of the comics published by Dark Horse listed above were licensed from Fox, now owned by Disney, so a lot of those comics were moved from Dark Horse to Marvel or Boom (including republication rights for books created by Dark Horse).

So while Dark Horse did make Alien comic books, that in no way means Embracer own the rights to make more Alien products, without licensing them from Disney.

It would be better to limit those lists to IPs actually owned by Dark Horse, and keep the Alien/Buffy/Serenity stuff as a footnote - like you did for the ports of Witcher and Force Unleashed.

The list as it is could be seen as misleading. Embracer don’t own Alien.

@acNewUpdates that makes sense I guess.

Maybe localisation costs as well? Though to be honest I’d have thought that, unless a localisation of a given game is unlikely, they’d bake those costs into the overall production expenses at the early planning stage, and spread the cost across all regions. But I know nothing about how they assess costs on these things.

@turntSNACO “You probably wouldn't walk into an empty McDonald's and tell the employees to go home because nobody wanted any burgers.”

Of course I wouldn’t. Instead I’ve walked into a McDonalds selling soft-boiled eggs and found half a dozen customers arguing about whether McDonalds should be selling them, “because we really like the Egg McMuffin”, and I felt like joining the debate rather than leaving to go buy a burger somewhere else.

“Why not be glad that somebody got paid and it cost you nothing?”

I’m not begrudging it, just positing a theory.

Personally I don’t really mind if the site posts articles like this, but I can see why some people might. To reuse the metaphor, putting the soft-boiled egg on the menu doesn’t stop McDonalds selling the McMuffin as well, it’s nice to have the option. But I can see how some people might be afraid that the chef was so busy boiling the egg that they didn’t see the incoming order for the Big Mac.

But there’s a whole bunch of chefs here, there’s no need to worry about that.

Um, I think I’ve lost control of this metaphor now…

I’m going to be annoying and fall into both camps here. I can see why FE fans would be interested in this article, but I can also see why people who only game on Nintendo systems and not Steam would be annoyed by a Nintendo-centric website would cover a game with little chance of coming to a Nintendo console.

If there was a chance it’ll get ported, that’s a different story, but there’s no indication there’s even a chance at this time.

If this site keeps covering non-Nintendo games just because “if you liked X, we think you’ll like Y” then maybe it’s time to rebrand.

Otherwise, it feels somewhat like the author is just making arbitrary articles to justify a pay cheque on a slow news day..:

Re: Nintendo Launches Subscription Service For Switch Repairs In Japan

6 repairs a year doesn’t mean they expect the Joy-Cons break every other month, it means they’re prepared for people with 3 pairs of Joy-Cons to have each one need repairing once a year. Or 2 pairs of Cons, the screen and the dock or a Pro Controller, or…

“Can claim up to 6 times a year” doesn’t mean you will, just that you Can.

It’s still not great statistics, but it covers accidents as well as drifting, so…

Wasn’t that long ago that a single repair to an out-of-warranty Wii or 3DS cost £30 just to investigate, let alone repair. So then you ask yourself “am I going to need 1 or more repairs in the next 3 years?” for a handheld device…?

And it’s still cheaper than mobile phone insurance.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 To Get An Expansion Pass Including New Story Content

gaga64

@HeadPirate that’s semantically accurate, though not true to my intentions. I asked some questions, I wasn’t calling anyone to action. But that’s on me for not choosing my phrasing more delicately.

I never intended to offend anyone who is happy with this announcement, and certainly never expected anyone at Nintendo to be listening and act on it. In my opinion the DLC announcement would be more successful from a marketing perspective post-launch, as it will inevitably cause a number of people to say “I’ll wait for the complete package, thanks” and this will hurt Day 1 sales figures - though by the same token setting out the plan pre-launch does allow for customer-centric purchasing options, and ultimately it’s not going to change the total sales figures, just spread them out over a longer period.

Also making the DLC announcement later would mean a separate News Story, which keeps the game in the headlines, potentially boosting sales.

That being said, I’m also not actually all that upset by this, I just asked a couple of questions, none of which actually expressed any emotional response. Any supposed anger in my first post is you projecting something onto me that patently wasn’t there.

I can’t deny the anger in my subsequent responses though, but that’s a defensive reaction to being unfairly attacked for asking a couple of questions.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 To Get An Expansion Pass Including New Story Content

Could they not at least wait until after release to announce DLC? Restoke they hype fires once the launch excitement has started to fade? Instead of making it seem like they’re releasing an unfinished product?

I’m sure the base game will feel complete enough, but when the release date was bumped up from September and then they announce more content is coming down the line before we get our hands on it, it kinda sends a message that it’s being rushed out the door before they’re done working on it.
