As the great Captain Haddock once said, 'what a week, huh?' It seems that in the run-up to Splatoon 3's release, Nintendo has been hitting us with inky news left, right and centre (splaturation, if you will). This week, we got a chance to go hands-on with the upcoming game, and we are sure that some of you will be doing the same this weekend as the Splatfest World Premier demo is now available to download from the Switch eShop.
While this week's Gamescom Opening Night Live and Nintendo Treehouse presentation has got us looking towards the future, you might wish to take a smaller scale approach to this weekend's gaming with both the mouse-based Islets and RITE scurrying onto Switch consoles.
Elsewhere on Nintendo Life, we got deep on our GoldenEye facts for the N64 game's 25th anniversary, entered mouthful mode in our visit to Tokyo's Kirby Cafe, and went for some spooky swings in our Cursed to Golf review.
But now, the weekend is finally here and we are ready to chill out with some good comfort games. Three members of the Nintendo Life team discuss their gaming plans below and we would love to hear what you are playing via our comment section. Happy reading!

This weekend I will be taking the Eurostar from Germany to England... which means a lot of Slay The Spire and some more time on 13 Sentinels, nothing new! I'm sorry for being so repetitive and predictable!
Buuuuuut since I'm at Gamescom this week, I've played and seen a lot of games that I'm now excited for, even if I don't know if they're all coming to Switch. Does that count? There's Vikings on Trampolines, Animal Well, Birth, Aka, Lakeside, and Fall of Porcupine all look SO interesting and beautiful. I hope they all come to Switch! But I'm also thinking I should get a Steam Deck...

I’ve not had to confess anything on ‘What Are You Playing’ for a while, so let’s change that – I’ve never really played a Splatoon game. I’ve tried but not really for more than a few minutes at a time. So, this weekend, I’ll be dipping my toes into the Splatoon 3 demo. My first ever Splatfest, hey? If you see an Octoling flailing about and doing terribly, that’s probably me. Sorry in advance, Team Scissors!
That’s probably all I’ll have time for this weekend – I’ll obviously be dipping into Xenoblade Chronicles 3’s postgame, but a little less video game time feels like a good thing.

This weekend, for me, will be a world of furniture building and decorating. So, when my sofa is finally in, what better way to chill out than continuing with my Splatoon 2 catch-up? One way or another, I will have some skill at the game by the release of the upcoming sequel.
I am also looking for some comfort gaming over the next couple of days, so there is no doubt that I will be returning to my beloved Zelda. Hopefully, I will be able to progress with Skyward Sword a little more than I have done in the past — motion controls turned off, of course. However, I have also been listening to the Breath of the Wild soundtrack a lot this week, so another run through the latest incarnation of Hyrule Field may be calling me for some cosy relaxation.
As ever, thank you for reading! Make sure to leave us a comment below with your weekend gaming plans!

The Artful Escape. Not much gameplay to be had and very short but a fun audiovisual experience nonetheless.
NINTENDO SWITCH
Splatoon 3 Demo - joining the Splatfest today! Team Rock forever!
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - making my way through Master Mode. It's a lot more difficult so far!
PC
GTA Online - multiplayer with friends later tonight!
Have a good weekend everyone!
Finally finished Xenoblade Chronicles 3 a few days ago after playing it exclusively for over three weeks so now I'm free to go back to my backlog and play some other stuff. This weekend I'm getting stuck into Omori, checking out the Splatfest demo and playing a bit of Monster Hunter.
Can't be playing different games every weekend lol. Still playing through XENOBLADE DE and BALDO.
Enjoying so much both of them!!
Next ones will be Bioshock Infinite and finally Xenoblade 3.
Xenoblade 3 and more Xenoblade 3
Mostly the Splatfest today but with the weekend in general, also some DioField Chronicle demo, MK8 Deluxe and Switch Sports. The insanity known as the September - November 2022 Switch lineup is fast approaching, Splatoon 3 is just the beginning.
Mainly Trinity Universe on PS3 with some Spelunky/Risk of Rain 2 on Switch on the side. Maybe a dash of Gears 4 on Xbox One.
On PS5 i will be fully focusing on soul hackers 2, so far its been pretty good, nowhere near the level of a persona game but that was to be expected.
On the Switch I will be playing Xenoblade chronicles 3 currently on chapter 4 and having a blast so far, I'd even say its better than number 1 but still 3 chapters to go.
On the series S I will be continuing with far cry 5, it's been 6 years since I last played a far cry game so it all feels new to me again as I know people complain about it being the same every release, but I'm enjoying it so far. Im also thinking of starting Sunset overdrive as it's the only insomniac game I haven't played yet and apparently its very good.
After two weeks of pretty much no time to invest in the hobby even on portable hardware, I'm definitely feeling hungrier than usual, although that doesn't mean the Xenoblade trio and XC3 in particular doesn't have high odds of devouring a significant chunk of the weekend's gaming time by itself. But there are certainly other itches - from specific ones inspired by past fortnight's experiences (like coming across a Little Princess audiobook that logically brought Hanako Games' "lily" sim incarnation to mind or idly watching the road and landscapes on a ride back to the city that left me craving some more Truck Driver) to more random ones like SSBU, AC2 and Boost Beast to the many playthroughs I was spotlighting in my Switch backlog before putting everything on hold (Bioshock 2, RF5, Danganronpa, SR4 etc). Since the next two weekends will likely have few opportunities for proper laptop use, I can see myself trying to find some time for the PC stuff like ESO, Witcher, FFXIII and/or RE2, too. And I'm not even sure what to home in on in the handheld realm, but some variably usual suspects like Etrian Odyssey, Fire Emblem Echoes, Ever Oasis, Endless Frontier, God Eater and Tales of Eternia (plus possible shorter stints in Ultimate NES Remix or a shot at mopping up the remaining postgame puzzles in Diabolical Box) will probably compile that menu in the end.
Still playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I should be done soon. After XC3 I was thinking of starting XC Definitive Edition over, since i didn't finish it last time. My copy of Soul Hackers 2 (PS5) will be arriving today, so I'll probably play that. And mabey some Dying Light 2 co-op on Series X with a friend.
Have a great weekend everyone! Happy gaming!
Fall Guys for the most part. I’m planning on starting Spider-Man Miles Morales and finishing Yoshi’s Crafted World soon!
As Dusk Falls on Series S and Bioshock 2 on the Switch.
Have a great weekend
Still working through Xenoblade 3! I'm on chapter 5 now, and supposedly coming up on the end. I'm really enjoying where things are going plot-wise, and the combat and exploration are still both fantastic! That being said, I also definitely want to get some time in with the Splatoon 3 Splatfest. I've also been playing a bit of MultiVersus on Steam again lately, so I'd say that will get some time as well.
I’m still trying to finish Xenoblade DE. I’ve finally reached chapter 14, but I’m trying to do a bit of side quests before I go on. I’m dying to start 3, but I really want to finish my second play through first. Wish me luck.😄
On Nintendo Switch:
Crypt of the NecroDancer — finished Zone 5 (second time) playing as Bard and Dove. Bought some new items from Hephaestus and one ring from sorcerer. Also tried to play the game as Tempo and Diamond. Playing as Diamond was interesting on a little bit.
BLAZBLUE CENTRALFICTION Special Edition — completed Arcade Mode playing as TR-0009 Tager(Iron Tager).
Corpse Party: Blood covered... Repeated fear — replaying Chapter 5 to get Wrong End 2 ★4. Also, I found 3 new name tags in bomb shelter. Now, I need to find 2 name tags to complete the list.
On Android:
Minecraft — 2 witches killed me and because of them, I destroyed about the half of my house. Now I'm rebuilding it.
On PC:
Enter the Gungeon, Dead Cells, Viscera Cleanup Detail. I've played them for a little bit on my best friend's PC.
Well, that's all what I've played on this week. Have a nice gaming weekend, everyone.
I’ve finally after 2 weeks beaten chapter 4 of Xenoblade 3. This game is massive.
I’m camping this weekend with no devices except my phone and kindle (and no electricity) so… nothing!
Did play a little bit of Into The Breach yesterday b4 leaving but that’s it. Hoping to finish portal and start portal 2 when I get back home but that’s not the weekend so doesn’t really count I suppose
Splatfest for me. Also really enjoying Pokémon Legends Arceus and Fire Emblem Fates Birthright.
Beat we ❤️ Katamari this week and got the platinum for Ghost of Tsushima.
Playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Country at the moment and still want to finish up Life is Strange 2. Also like every week some fortnite.
Not much besides those. Maybe I’ll start Two Point Campus or something else.
I dunno. A game or two on the SNES Classic, a bit of Shredder's Revenge to prepare me for the Cowabunga Collection coming on Tuesday, maybe some Stranger of Paradise, to finish a bit of the main story.
I'll be finishing the botw dlc and playing some more soul hackers 2 on ps5
Dipping in to the Splatfest whenever I get the chance. Also planning to play more Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Currently 105 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles 3! Gonna be playing that along with Kirby and the Forgotten Land
I tried the Splatoon 3 demo this morning and yeah…it’s definitely Splatoon. Didn’t finish the match I started. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, it’s still fun but I had my fill with the first two games and without something properly new like a significant single player mode I just don’t see a reason for me to pick this one up.
Went straight back to Xenoblade 3. 35 hours into it and at chapter 5, loving it.
I just completed Kirby's Blowout Blast on easy on 2DS, which was a beautiful experience. I'm now going back and getting Star Coins in the early levels of New Super Mario Bros. on DS
This Weekend i'll be playing
Two Worlds II (PC)
Soul Hackers 2 (PC)
Splatoon 3 Splatfest Demo (Switch)
This week I will be mostly playing
Sonic Colours
Pokémon Shuffle
Phantasy Star
Got a Splatoon 3 Switch OLED so mostly that this weekend. I will get into some XC3, I have 45 hours in. For me, that's a lot at this point. Playing Splatoon 3 splatfest as well. I voted for team rock. Let's go!
Gonna start Nier Automata today. Played all of nier replicant a few months ago and really loved it so looking forward to automata
Splatfest.
I love me some Splatoon so obviously I want to Splatfest!
Can't wait for the full game and finally be able to level up and buy ALL the things again!
absolutely nothing
Due to manga reading being my primary hobby lately over the last 4 or 5 months, I haven't been playing many games over the weekend, but I have been playing some stuff on breaks at work. I finished a replay of Steamworld Dig 2 and it still remains an absolutely incredible game all these years later. I'm now replaying Joe Danger on my Vita, and while this may be a Nintendo site, the relevance I would like to add is that this game NEEDS to come to Switch. I appreciate that The Last Campfire came to the platform, but the fun, bright, accessible nature of Joe Danger would be a perfect fit for the Switch.
Another busy summer weekend but I will squeeze in some Splatoon 3 Splatfest for sure. This will be my first ‘fest since early in Splatoon 2. No doubt I’ll be slaughtered, but will try to paint that turf and splat as much as I’ve been splatted at least.
Glory to Team Paper!
I’ll also go on a leisurely hunt or 2 in MonHun Rise, too. I’ve unlocked the 4☆ Hub quests, so a whole new world awaits.
Wishing a great weekend to all you friendly inklings, octolings, and mammals out there!
Batman Arkham Origins on my newly acquired Wii U's Gamepad.
I've also gotten Splinter Cell Blacklist, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate Deluxe Edition (both digitally on the eShop - couldn't wait) and Deus Ex Human Revolution Director's Cut plus I have Batman Arkham City Armored Edition coming in a few days.
I'm also contemplating getting Zombi U as I had that one (plus Splinter Cell and Deus Ex) when I had my first Wii U back in 2013-14.
I personally think the Wii U is quite underrated (although I admit I was one of those who underrated it back in the day too), I'm having a really good time with it right now.
This weekend is all about Subnautica #1— it’s my 5th most played game on the switch, because I’ve restarted it a few times . I only have 2 more blueprints before I can build the cyclops for the first time. Such an immersive game (double entendre intendended)
I will be playing the Splatfest World Premiere! I picked team Rock!
Xc3 I have now put 100hrs in the game I am at chapter 7 and I will try to finish it this weekend , it’s definitely my game of the year, and the best xenoblade in my opinion .
Played some Mario Party 2 and 3 with my young sister. Wish they were on Switch Online, the classic Mario Parties are some of the most played games across my family.
Just finished Inmost, a beautiful game. And I didn't feel like playing something else after that, but I did play some Picross on my 3ds. Funny, I finished all of them, all of the 3ds Picross games, including the themed spinoffs from pokemon and zelda and Picross 3d 1 and 2, and some on Switch, and I keep returning, and keep getting better even when not playing them for half a year.
For the rest of the day, I'll be playing the Splatoon 3: Splatfest Demo (having a fantastic time, only issue is some annoying disconnects) but after that, I'll be flipping between Pokemon Shield, the Escapades in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and probably some more Street Fighter Alpha 2.
All the love for XC3 got to me, so I decided to start XC1 and work my way through the series (minus the Wii U entry, sadly).
I'm also playing through Saints Row 2 in Co-Op on the Xbox, along with trying to complete Slipstream.
River City Saga: The Three Kingdoms.. so good.
Super Mario Kart in honour of its 30th anniversary today.
More Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. I'm about to start Chapter 11 and getting close to the 60 hour mark. The side quests have started to wear thin for me as they are basically the same two kinds of quests over and over again (fetch quests or kill monsters), but I'm still highly enjoying the main story.
Finished up God of War on my PS5 & now I’m 6 chapters in on Final Fantasy 7 Remake! First Final Fantasy for me since Final Fantasy Tactics Advance eons ago. I can see why ppl love Cloud & this story they’ve built! Its also gotten me curious about other installments in the series that I’ve missed
I'm gonna try and finish the main campaign in Xenoblade 3. I just wrapped up a bunch of sidequests and I think Im about to enter the final area of the game.
Additionally I'll be participating in Pokemon Go Fest. This is likely the final ticketed event I'm doing.
This weekend I played these games. 🙂
1. Transformers Battlegrounds PS4
2. Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu Switch
Loss my dad. Will play a little to keep my mind off things. Xenoblade chronicles 3.
Xenoblade chronicles 3. Maybe some stuff on N64 like wave race, wcw/nwo revenge, and griffey slugfest
Kirby's Dream Buffet so I can hone my new skills, and Splatoon 3 test of course!
switch: olliolli world
pc: opus magnum
I finally played and beat The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. This game is a masterclass in game design, and so inventive for its time. I might be late to the party, but this will easily go down as one of my favorite games of all time. There were only two instances where I had to look at a guide for help - but none of them were regarding collectible items; I found those all organically. It’s insane to think about how amazing this game was for its time. It transcended gaming, and became incredibly influential.
Now that I’ve beaten ALtoTP, I’m going to start Super Castlevania IV (Nintendo Switch, Castlevania Anniversary Collection). This game doesn’t get talked about enough, but it should because it’s fantastic. It’s such an atmospheric game with an incredible soundtrack that sets the tone immediately. Moreover, it doesn’t overstay its welcome; it can be completed in a couple of hours. It’s a shame I wasn’t old enough to play this game when it was distributed to the public because, if I recall correctly, it was released the day of Halloween in 1991 - a perfect game to play during that celebration.
Aside from that, I’m playing a modern retro classic - Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. It’s such an incredible game, and harkens back to the best years of Castlevania (for good reason, obviously). I’m considering buying the LRG version of CoTM2 because it’s gorgeous and I want to add it to my collection.
Played and finished Shredders Revenge on Thursday/Friday and now it's Splatfest all day! Team Rock for the win!
Tried some Ringfit but I'm on one of those levels you have to finish in a certain amount of steps and I'm stuck on it, really ruined the momentum I've built with it....
Then Sunday I'll likely be back to Xenoblade 3 and maybe play some online with Pokémon Sheild, considering the next mainline game is only a few months away I feel like getting the most out of this one before then.
Having only started it just over a week ago, I’m utterly enamoured with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so that’s what I’ll continue to play over the weekend. In fact, I’ve put a few hours into it today already. Such a relaxing game!
Now, how to get the recipes for a ladder and slingshot?! Can’t be that much farther before I get them.
Have a great weekend everyone! <3
I forecast more Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I'm currently in Chapter 4 (40 hours in) but got wonderfully sidetracked in the exploration department. I hope to make more progress in the main story...unless I stumble across more quests. XD
Elsewhere, I need to find a "side" game to dive in and out of after finishing Kirby's Return to Dream Land yesterday. I still need to pick up a couple 3DS VC games before it shutters for good, so I believe I'll finally do so...as well as give the amazing Stretchmo (Fullblox for some of you) a try before grabbing the full bundle if it's to my liking.
I might shove in some Pokemon Go this weekend too, since Ultra Beasts will be in raids.
Happy gaming!
@the_beaver Is Baldo: The Guardian Owls really that much better than it was before the latest update? If it is, I may well pick it up!
@UltimateOtaku91 sunset overdive is a very fun game! Messing about in the open world is just so entertaining! The campaign and stuff is ok, nothing to write home about but it's makes up for it in style
@The_Pixel_King To be honest, I don't know how bad it was before as I didn't play it (I heard it had a lot of bugs, though). I just know that in the current conditions it's really good!
Go for it if you like Zelda and Ni No Kini.
Wave Race 64 via NSO and of course Pokémon Go for the next part of Go Fest.
I wil be doing some XC3 and will be playing some more Island and maybe back into fruits of Grisaia. Can’t wait for the cowabungs collection.
@Rpg-lover
Very sorry to hear that. All the best to you, in what I know will be a difficult time. Take care.
@Rpg-lover My sincere condolences my friend. I know how that feels and all I can say is time will make things easier for you. I lost both my parents within six weeks of one another back in 1999. Mum and dad were only 47 and 51. I still miss them every day, but like I say, it does get easier. Stay strong, and I’m here if you want to talk.
Me:
Wife:
Primarily Xenoblade 3, I'm in the last stretch so I'll be focusing on that today, though I did get a bit further in Trails of Cold Steel III the other day so I might be playing a bit of that as well. I also plan to pick up the DLC for Fire Emblem Awakening, so here's hoping I can add funds through my Switch Account and it'll let me buy those.
I’ll be chugging through Chapter 4 of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Man, I love this game! Xenoblade is rapidly becoming one of my favorite Nintendo series…probably ranking just behind Mario and Metroid. Happy gaming, everyone!
@Tyranexx
Btw, does Kirby games on Wii have ability making friends like Star Allies?
Stuck on chapter 14 in Bayonetta. Hopefully I can finish the 1st one to start on the 2nd. Also, almost finished with AI: The Somnium Files.
I kinda want to get back into Smash Bros and see what’s up in Animal Crossing since I haven’t played that in awhile.
Played the Splatoon 3 demo for what seemed like 6 hours lol. My hands are a little cramped, but with the rank of Paper Ruler (yes I support Paper), I think I'll call it quits for this event now.
Will likely play more Skyrim later. Mainly focusing on adding more furnishings to my Lakeview Manor home and probably exploring more random caves as I see fit.
Splatfest & Pac-Man World Re-Pac
@Anti-Matter I don't know about "making friends" - I don't think the game had online functionality - but Kirby's Return to Dream Land allows for easy local multiplayer for up to four players. I played solo.
@The_Pixel_King thanks so much my friend. Your words means a lot to me. I find it hard to take in, but yet again I have to be strong. Thanks so much once again. I can now relate with how others must have been feeling when facing this situation.
@Tott thanks so much. I can't believe it happened so fast. Still struggling to come to terms with the fact I won't be able to speak to him ever again.
Well I'm stuck at home sick so I have a couple weeks to play games I didn't actually get time for. Luigi's Mansion 3, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Mario 3D All-Stars, and some others
Yesterday I started playing Dodgeball Academia and finished the first chapter. I like it and it is something else.
Playing lots of New games plus some not-new games. My rpgs are being neglected in exchange for extra platforming this week:
Mario + rabbits. I have had the game for about a year but am just now getting to it. Hopefully it gets better after world one. Because I am not really feeling it at this point.
@Razputinman
Master mode is difficult at the beginning, but once you beat a divine beast you just become overpowered. That’s my main problem with the game. It just gets really easy.
Cuphead whenever I’m not doing schoolwork lol. Happy gaming!
I've finished Pokemon Sword post game. I am gonna take a little break before I jump into the expansion.
Mario & Rabbids DLC - I am at the end now, I LOVE these puzzle opening all the chest really exercises my small brain. 😀
Celeste - I've conquered the mountain (yay!), now I am collecting all the strawberries....or I am rather trying. And then B-side....😵
Happy gaming everyone!!
Playing Mario odyssey, collecting the moons like a boss.
@Tyranexx
No, the making friend I meant from Kirby Star Allies was the ability from Kirby to turn the enemies into your ally by throwing a heart.
Is that feature was on Kirby Return to Dreamland Wii also ?
@BigBoo eleste - I've conquered the mountain (yay!), now I am collecting all the strawberries....or I am rather trying. And then B-side....😵
Wow....respect!!!
@Rpg-lover My condolences for your loss; I hope you and your family are able to receive the comfort, healing, and support you need during this difficult time.
@Anti-Matter OH. I haven't played Star Allies, so I didn't know that was a feature. No, Return To Dream Land didn't have anything like that.
Not Kirby's Dream Buffet,
online is dead already.
@Rykdrew Nah...I might give up half way who knows! so far diggin it though 😎
I’ve been having an absolute blast with the Splatoon 3 demo! I’ll probably be playing that only for the rest of the day in terms of gaming. Otherwise, I don’t really know what to play in the meantime while I wait for Splatoon 3 to release in a couple of weeks. I’ll probably just play random multiplayer games like Fortnite.
Played the Splatoon 3 splatfest, Pokémon Legends Arceus and Animal Crossing.
Darkest Dungeon Ancestral - gonna start a new play through.
Return to Wolfenstein II New Colossus - mindless shooting!
Ni No Kuni - chill.
Mahjong by Microsoft (Android) - All done with August medals now. I'm replaying random challenge packs till September starts.
Panzer Geekz (Windows Phone) - Blast Corps lite as I call it lol Only have a few more levels left to beat.
Make It Rain: The Love of Money (Windows Phone) - I'm finally done with this and can now move onto the next game.
@Rpg-lover I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you.
This weekend I have been playing "recovering from my 2nd bout with COVID!" Luckily the rest of my family didn't get hit as hard as I did this time around...
On the bright side, now that I can keep my eyes open for more than a few minutes, I have started playing Golden Sun for the 1st time and really love it.
@Guitar_bard thanks so much.
@Tyranexx thanks so much. And yes my love ones are making it easy for me.
Maybe it's because off the Super Mario Kart articles lately, but I've been feeling like doing the battle mode of MK8D. Haven't done battle mode in years. Other than that I'll keep going through the DioField Chronicle demo to finish it. If I'm lucky, it'll be back to Torna The Golden Country.
I've been hankering for some Zelda type gameplay. So dug my old 3DS and have been playing A Link between worlds.
I would like to play the N64 Switch games, but refuse to until they have the controller available.
Picked up Owlboy in eShop sale. Really enjoying it so far.
My wife and I didn't deviate from our shared gaming plan during the beginning of the weekend, as I continued whittling away at the beast that is Yakuza: Like A Dragon on our PS4 while she continued her steady progress in Metroid Dread, but late Saturday, we were inspired to co-op, and we tested out RE: Revelations 2. I had read good things about the Raid Mode, and can confirm that is quite fun, and a very good means of introduction to the series for someone like her, who was uninitiated and never played an Resident Evil game to completion. The split screen isn't for everyone, I will concede to that, but I was sucked in, for sure.
