Re: TT Games Listens and Gives LEGO Worlds on Switch a Nice New App Icon

So they tried to do something creative and conceptual, and the masses complained and asked for more commonplace, cluttered, visual-overload imagery. Congratulations. You got what you asked for. More eyecandy. More colors. Just keep throwing those colors at us. It's never enough. More explosions. More lighting effects. More! More! More!

Re: The Metroid: Samus Returns Legacy Edition Looks Fabulous

yawn That cartridge had me excited for a moment, but then I realized it was a steelbook. Ugh. I guess when you're old like me, you just get tired of this kind of junk being passed off as being special. If I buy it, I need to store it. A CD soundtrack is great, but the other stuff is basically a joke. Even the artbook is some half-hearted thing. Either release a full, 200-page artbook, or give us a cool, retro-style instruction pamphlet with maps, enemy art, etc... Remember AR cards?? At least I might be able to get a few minutes' fun out of that, especially if it was also an Amiibo card. CD soundtrack, AR Amiibo card. That would be a nice bundle. But no, let's fit a case inside a steelbook inside a cardboard box. Golden. Anyway, ignore me. I'm old and tired and I'm going to bed now. Enjoy.

Re: Square Enix Confirms Nintendo Switch Release For I Am Setsuna

@Spiders Well, my comment was a knee-jerk reaction, and I forgot I typed it. I guess the thing is... I DID have an interest in it, but just watching this trailer, the more I saw, the more it felt like the same old stuff. If people enjoy it, that's great, but calling it an homage is almost silly in a way, since the same old stuff has never really gone away. I'm not saying it'll be a bad game. I think I'm just getting older and want to see something new, but we're not getting it. "Brand new IP!" these days typically means a new story in a familiar format. The people who made Final Fantasy have a new IP that looks and feels like Final Fantasy, complete with the exact same style of airships we've seen hundreds of times... but instead of just one section of the game being covered in snow, now it's the ENTIRE game. Ok. The thing is, I'll totally admit it LOOKS great, and I like the feel of the trailer. It's just not new, and that's frustrating for an old man like me.

Re: Say Hello to the Nintendo Switch, a New Concept for Gaming

edcomics

Honestly, it looks like a natural progression from the Wii U. It's almost a Wii U +. Conceptually, it's a good idea. For someone like me, the multiplayer-on-the-go aspect likely wouldn't serve a purpose, but it's a nice idea. Also the linking of two systems for 4-player-on-the-go is impressive, if it works. Portability is the key thing here. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Re: Poll: Exceptional Graphics or 60fps, Which is More Important for the NX Generation?

edcomics

I don't understand the fixation with 60fps. Most of the time you can't even see what's going on there. Smooth movement? Fine, I get it... but at a consistent lower frame rate, I think there's a cinematic quality that's rather appealing. At 60fps, I often feel things look LESS real... and what good is the higher frame rate if the graphics don't look good? Recent Nintendo systems have suffered from weak graphics. It's about time they stepped up their game and delivered some visually impressive software. Immersion begins with a single frame.

Re: Weirdness: Fans Think They've Found Mario And Luigi's Father

edcomics

Wow. I'm pretty sure I've seen that artwork before. Maybe on a lunchbox. The Toadstool people are really ringing a bell. As for King Koopa, I think that looks a lot like how he appears in the original game. Likewise, that's how Luigi was portrayed in all the merchandise. A little off-model here, but I remember having a keychain which was pretty much just the color swap done on Mario. White overalls. Green shirt. Nobody really talks about Super Mario 2 anymore, but that game established a lot of how the characters look now. Everything before that point is like a different world.

Re: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Has Been Delayed To 2018

edcomics

@hYdeks I didn't even think about that, even though it's obvious. I mean... I guess it depends on what the Kickstarter page says. If they clearly announced or unlocked a Wii U version, I'd think they're obligated to fulfill that expectation. They can also release it on the NX, but Wii U owners supported the campaign, so they should be taken care of. 2018, though. Sheesh.

Re: Poll: The Nintendo NX - Where Do You Stand on the Future of Nintendo?

edcomics

@Moshugan Nintendo has a habit of dropping support for a system fairly early in its lifetime. The Wii was actually the exception here, I think, but earlier systems like the Gamecube and even the N64 suffered from kind of lazy first-party support. As I said, Nintendo loves to hype things up, but after that initial burst of energy, they usual shift their focus onto the next home console.

The Wii U system is actually pretty good. The problem was branding and a lack of support. Nintendo's first-party offerings were kind of phoned-in. Nothing really unique there, and we STILL don't have a proper Zelda game for the system. Yes, it's coming, but we're getting the dumbed-down version of what has become an NX launch game. This happened before on the Gamecube.

Another thing about the Wii U is that companies like Ubisoft really tried to use the Gamepad, as in Rayman Legends, whereas Nintendo itself dropped Gamepad functionality in games such as Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. I consider that a form of abandonment for a system that still has plenty of life in it. It's just that Miyamoto-tachi are easily bored and move on to the next project without properly support the previous one.

Sony squeezes so much out of its systems, and continues to support the last generation after the new console has been released. THAT is pretty remarkable.

Re: Poll: The Nintendo NX - Where Do You Stand on the Future of Nintendo?

@aaronsullivan That's the game's only "problem" for me — that certain games are multiplayer only. There's still plenty for a single player to enjoy on there, though, and just running around the park is also fun. My nieces loved tracking down the other Miis. I'll have to pop the game in and play a bit tonight. I'm sure there are a few items I still haven't unlocked from the Pachinko game yet.

Re: Poll: As The amiibo Collection Hits 100, What's The Current State of Play?

edcomics

I just don't see much use for Amiibo. Most of them are for Smash Bros, right? Splatoon could have made much more use of Amiibo, such as unlocking actual playable characters with each Amiibo. There are a million things you could do with Amiibo, but Nintendo hasn't really enticed me to keep buying. In fact, outside of the Splatoon 3-pack, I regret all the Amiibo purchases I've made, which aren't terrible numerous, but the money could've been spent better elsewhere. Right now, ALL the Amiibo are just sitting around, collecting dust. At least with Skylanders I can dust them off and play a game with them, but Amiibo doesn't have the same replay value. Not for me, anyway.

Re: Editorial: An Ode To The Wii U GamePad, Nintendo's Mad But Brilliant Controller

edcomics

@beazlen1 Right, but you can't interact with whatever's on your TV. You have to keep switching back and forth. You can't scroll left and right on the menu or select software when the menu is displayed on the TV, and you can't interact with Miis or click on game icons while Wara Wara is displayed on the TV. I don't know what the answer would be, but the current setup is not ideal.

I think it's exactly what some people feared before the Wii U even came out. The whole concept of Asymmetric Gameplay meant that whoever you're in the room with has to rely on whoever holds the Gamepad for pretty much everything. Even in games like Rayman Legends where there are fun asymmetric gaming sections... while they're fun, they're also kind of frustrating, because Player 2 doesn't really have any idea what's going on in certain situations. Maybe that's ok, but I don't think it's ideal. It's a bizarre concept to begin with.

And then, they never followed the idea of using TWO Gamepads at the same time. I remember some Nintendo exec getting a question about that and being totally caught off guard because they had never considered that Player 2 might want to use a Gamepad as well. They said they'd look into it, but they never did.

I think the ultimate problem is not the controller, but the concept of Asymmetric Gameplay, and the fact that Nintendo never really knew what to do with it. By the time Dokey Kong Tropical Freeze came out... in that game, the Gamepad screen goes black during gameplay, which pretty much means Nintendo gave up on AG. There was room for innovation, but once the system came out and wasn't the immediate hit they expected, Nintendo essentially dropped support and started to focus on the NX.

The Gamepad is good, but it'll be abandoned and forgotten, just like the Wii Remote.

Ugh, I rambled. Sorry.

Re: Editorial: An Ode To The Wii U GamePad, Nintendo's Mad But Brilliant Controller

Game & Wario is another good use of the Gamepad. Overall, I like the controller a lot. Before they messed with the internet browser, it was a great way to... browse the internet. Before they messed with Netflix, it was a great way to browse Netflix, with a different display on each screen. Wii Street U was really fun with the Gamepad and being able to spin around and take a virtual world tour. Speaking of which, the Panoramic View tours were also a clever inclusion. There's been some good stuff with the Gamepad. Just not ENOUGH. A little here and there is not enough. Nintendo is most responsible for not supporting their own gimmick. It's too bad. Oh well.
