Nintendo has just confirmed that Animal Crossing: New Leaf will be getting a fresh lease of life this year thanks to a free update which will enable amiibo support in the million-selling 3DS title.
While this isn't news in itself - we knew about this a while back - the game will also be getting a fresh release in both physical and digital formats.
We'll also be getting 50 new Animal Crossing amiibo cards which showcase entirely new animals, and there will be a special Animal Crossing Direct broadcast in the Autumn.

I guess this was one positive aspect of the Direct we just watched.
I'd hate if the new villagers are amiibo invite only though.
New main series AC game reveal for NX in the next direct?
What's interesting to me is that the direct is called 'Animal Crossing Direct', which opens up the possibility that they will talk about the mobile game as well.
I might wait and see how much this new AC New Leaf is going to be physically before I download the Nintendo Select version. I really love this game.
;_; Just after I get the last of the cards to finish my collection... more of them. Bring em on.
This is a great way to refresh an old game.
I was hoping for a packaged version of the "update", so I'd like to grab that. I hope that there'll be some way to transfer save data though.
I guess I'm going to be blowing a few quid trying to get the cards of the villagers that have inevitably moved away since I last touched the game.
@Pokefanmum82 I assume the "fresh" release will be the Selects version, so it will most likely be 17.99. It would be nice for it to get a release in the Selects range.
I assume it's a way to drum up more interest in the AC amiibos as I'm guessing they didn't do so well (seeing as I managed to get a load of them for like £3 each the other week).
I have almost the entire set of the AC Amiibo card.
Bugs me these new ones don't match at all. Bugs me a lot.
My oldest son owns this and everyone in my family has taken turns trying it; but I could not get into it. This is awesome news though for AC fans!
I don't know if it's enough of an update for New Leaf. That was such a great game, and I clocked so many hours in it. Shelling out a bunch of money for Amiibo and/or Amiibo cards to unlock a few mini-quests doesn't sound worth it to me. I would have been down for an expansion or direct sequel. I feel like Nintendo always does things half way. It's frustrating.
This gives me flashbacks to e reader cards.
But yeah, I'm looking forward to these. New leaf is the best AC so far.
By the fact they are going to the effort of rereleasing the game (which carries an expense in itself) and are putting together a whole direct themed around it, Id like to think that the update offers something more than just amiibo support. I can only assume they are moving the happy home designer concept over to the new mobile app and will then integrate that in with the main game. I will pick up the new physical copy as I never played it first time round and I hope it offers enough to rejuvenate the current community too.
Looking forward to this Animal Crossing Direct. Still play New Leaf a lot.
Cant wait for the new amiibo cards
I downloaded Animal Crossing New Leaf on release date!
I guess that means I'm screwed and won't get the exclusive card.
They really need to implement a redemption for those that buy digitally!
The update is cool and I'll certainly play more ACNL, though I'm dreading to see what the state of my town will now be. I'm still burnt out on amiibo, and I don't fancy those new cards.
Can't wait for that update, this might actually justify me buying some AC amiibo. So far they've just been so exclusive, it's been alienating.
Can't wait for this! As ever I'd like to be able to select where a new village moves to and lock them for moving out.
New release both physical and digital download ?!
Gosh...! Must prepare my budget to buy Nintendo Selects version.
Actually i have owned the older version. But for a new Villagers from new Amiibo cards, it's kinda temptating me.
Btw, Hopkins (Blue Hare) looked so adorable. :3
@Fandabidozi
I agree. Better the new update eliminating the Move Out system. Sometimes people need a break from playing same game over and over again. By eleminating Move Out system, we will not worried of losing our favorite villager due to not playing for long time. If we can invite back the villagers that has move out, it will be perfect because practically we can invite back no matter how many times they move out. Just put your Amiibo card and voila...! They will pop out.
@Gold_Ranger It's not an exclusive card, just a random one from the new set.
I am looking forward to the update but November is so far away .
Maybe theres still hope for mariokart 7 dlc.......
