Square Enix has revealed that it is bringing the RPG I Am Setsuna to the Nintendo Switch, and what's more, it will be getting a North American and European release.
Developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, the game launched in Japan at the start of 2016. It's currently available in the west on the PS4 and Steam.
Inspired by genre classics such as Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, I am Setsuna is a deliberate attempt to revive the "classic" JRPG genre and should make a neat addition to the Switch software lineup.

"When Setsuna insist on you joining her party the only thing she knows about you is that you're a hired killer, hired to kill her specifically. "Oh Player-san I feel so comfortably around your upraised dagger and horrible stench of blood money!""
You may be Setsuna... but I R WEASEL!!!!
Ahem. Well, I wasn't sold at first as it looks a little generic with the borderless speech bubbles & bland animé characters. But then they showed an airship. An airship!! That should be the whole trailer!
I'll give this a chance, thought Golden Sun didn't look great at first but it turned out to be amazing fun (think I was lv70 when I last played it).
Been meaning to give this a try on PS4. Might just wait for Switch then, since portability will be interesting for this one.
Well no point in me playing it on PC then...
Freaking yeah man, I was waiting for the PS Vita version but since that one never came I guess I'll treat myself to the Switch version instead. I want this game in portable form.
Wait, a second Square-Enix (aside from Dragon Quest) game confirmed for Switch?

Neat! Now if I could make a suggest--
... did I say something? Sorry, I kind of have one nasty cough. Wait a second, I'm going for two...
... what?
Well, don't stare at me like that, it's winter!
Sounds nice. Not more than nice. But Final Fanta-shot
...
goes to heaven
...sy XV on the other hand would absolutely be more than nice to get a Nintendo Switch version of! It would be awesome! Please, Square? Pretty please?
@Xaessya Oh Yahtzee you charismatic stallion~
Hope they rebalance the combat for this release.
Goodbye, yet another theoretical PS4 purchase.
@AlexSora89 hope springs eternal, eh? I don't think we've been through half of the mentioned "80 Switch games currently in development" yet. Release dates and announcements are another question, of course; I bet some stuff will not be heard of until E3.
@Dakt That's kind of the feeling I got from the trailer. Is the airship cool at least?
@retro_player_22 that's a good chunk of what I admittedly expect from Switch in essence - being a spiritual successor to Vita. XD
@AlexSora89 Don't forget about
I'm still hoping for a big hitter from Squenix considering how well they've supported the 3DS. And they didn't show the Cloud the amiibo last night, have to be saving it for something big.
Played it on the PS4, as I suspected far before release, the piano only soundtrack is super bland (and at times even obnoxious) and completely ruins any chance for the rest of the game to shine.
Great game if you like old-school, turn-based RPGs, though it's definitely not for everyone. It's a very dark and depressing game in terms of storyline, setting, soundtrack, etc. but if you're like me and don't get upset by that it really is a gem of a game, incredibly emotional, powerful and reminds me a lot of Chrono Trigger (the greatest game of all time!)
The more RPG (whether western or eastern) the merrier. I'll get this one for sure.
Now Squeenix, why don't we talk about Final Fantasy?
@rjejr I love FF7 & still have my original copy for the PSX. Not sure if I really want FF7: Remake. Will be hard playing the game knowing the combat system has been ripped out & replaced with "realtime battles" just because.
Well the game looks great but i still expect to see some of the other titles but we shall see.
This goes the same as Dragon Quest Heroes:
I was about to get it on Steam, and now I don't have to.
Happy days~
Would have bought on a vita but no dice in the west, looks like it's a switch to the Switch.
@nhSnork
I'm scared, okay? It's a perfectly human emotion. Especially because the Switch is awesome and I don't want a brilliant console to fail.
Retail or digital eShop game?
This game was on my list but my back log is insane, still finishing FF XV then I'll play Last Guardian.
@rjejr
You too caught a cold, huh?
Or a cold shoulder, amirite? Huh? Huh?
(it's funny because other consoles get twice as many Square Enix games as Nintendo consoles and handheld do)
I miss the turn based JRPGs so much. This is a day 1 for me. It sounds and looks so sullen though, I hope the game has the usual humor and crazy characters that you'd normally see in a game like this.
Reminds me of Bravely Default. Both Art (also similar to FF tactics) and Playstyle. While I love Bravely Default, I'd rather have an action packed mainline JRPG from SE.
Annnnd YES!!!!!!11
Interesting. I hope this move will inspire others and we get more classic JRPGs, but with a whole new concept and stories to be unfold. Also I wonder if SE Japan also calls it Switchmas lol
On the other hand... Not even one ARPG for Switch? I miss old good action packed RPG full of steampunk elements, guess that's more of a PC thing.
I want!
I want it, but it looks like a 3DS/Vita game. So it better not be no $60.
@Captain_Gonru I'm sure the $70 Pro has an NFC scanner built in somewhere. Well almost sure. Still not sure what's in the $90 dock to justify $90.
@DanteSolablood "realtime battles"
I'm excited to play it that way to see if it holds up. Just lsinteing to the music in the car in FFXV gives me goosebumps.
I demand more info on the Octo game. Great vibes.
I hope that the Kingdom Hearts collection gets ported over to the Switch.
I always felt like it was a missed opportunity to not put on a portable, and just leave it on PS4/Steam. I always prefer turn-based RPGs on handhelds.
I'm glad to see that this game will get a second life on the Switch.
Q) Will you be buying this title, or have you already sampled it on PS4 or Steam?
A) I don't play games on PC/Steam, and I'm often put off from purchasing PS4 games due to my dislike of the controller. I held off on getting I Am Setsuna, a part of me holding onto the hope that it would release on the Switch, and thank gosh it is.
Console-based Turn Based Role Playing Gamess when your primary gaming system are those from Nintendo don't come by often enough, so I will delight in getting I Am Setsuna for Switch. I hear it's a Japanese launch title for the Switch, and I'm hoping that will also be the case in the UK.
I think the price of this game is a little much. It looks great but I'm not sure if I want to pay $40 for it
Played it on PS4. It's okay. It's just another SE rpg, nothing more, nothing less.
I may try it on Steam, once the price goes down. I have a hefty backlog to keep me occupied until then, I can wait.
@Captain_Gonru Oh, there will always be assumptions. But come on, does it really matter? If you get a Switch you'll have the Joy-cons, they come w/ it. If you buy a Pro controller to play Zelda just keep a Joycon nearby, it's really nto that big of a deal, and thats coming from me, where everything is a big deal. Like, no sign of Yooka-Laylee last night after Playtonic said it was coming to Switch. Maybe in 2018.
So no, maybe no NFC reader in the Pro, but its 'in the Joycon, that really should be all anybody needs. Better than 2DS and that IR dock.
waiting for it to dip around $20 usd on the PS4
@Captain_Gonru @rjejr rejoice fellows, and may your guessing cease: the Nintendo Switch pre-order site states there's an NFC reader on the thing in the description, but it doesn't specify where. Maybe your (and my) guessing might not have ended after all...
I like the look of Octopath Traveler a lot more. Nevertheless, the more games the better.
After yesterday's Switch reveal, I might go with a PS4 and buy it on that.
@DanteSolablood
I didn't know anyone remembered this! Woo!
Although I think it is I.R. Baboon and I.M. Weasel.
@Kamalot Lol, you're right... I just thought I R Weasel sounded more catchy.
"Momma had a chicken, Momma had a cow, Father was happy, he didn't care how."
Glad i didnt get this on pc yet..well up for playing this game!
This is music to my ears. I just Pre ordered the Black Switch from GameStop. They re opened pre orders for shipping to home address no in store pick up. Hopefully I will be playing Zelda by March 10th. I'm really excited now. I thought the presentation from Japan was about the lamest thing I've ever seen in gaming. Then I watched the Treehouse and felt better about it. Can't Wait!
@Spoony_Tech I pre ordered Switch and Zelda. GameStop had opened up pre orders for the Black Switch around midnight. I had been checking all day. Ship only no in store pick up. Man I was mad last night. All other pre order sold out within minutes and within minutes eBay had thousands of them up for sale for 500.00 too 9,999. I wish eBay would pull them since they actually don't have the item yet.
@Windy I was on Best Buy's sight at just right moment twice lol. Shortly after the presentation and right when the Master Edition for Zelda went on sale. I wasn't even thinking I was going to get that set but I got lucky I guess. Glad to see you're getting one and also can't wait for the new SMT!
Same old stuff. These RPGs are all alike.
@Spoony_Tech as long as they keep announcing these RPG's I will be ok for sure lol. But im also looking at that Bomberman. I prefer Classic Bomberman 94 to ruin my friendships but this new one will do haha. Ive also gotten hooked on survival Horror lately and action RPG's. I picked up my copy of zelda at Amazon cause they give 10 dollars off to Prime members. So I got a little discount for that
@DanteSolablood No.
@edcomics
The further you pull back, most video games become pretty similar. Why be so condescending and reductive about something you clearly have no interest in? Plus, you're really missing the point, as I Am Setsuna was MEANT to be an homage to the "same old stuff".
I Am Setsuna really sets itself apart from the (sub) genre in it's use of minimalism: stripped down story, snow-covered everything, single-instrument soundtrack, etc. It might have just been the budget, but it feels deliberate and gives the game a very unique tone.
@Expa0 Huh. Different strokes. The piano soundtrack is what kept me playing more than anything. Still switch my PS4 theme to 'Kuro' every once in a while to hear the theme.
@Spiders Well, my comment was a knee-jerk reaction, and I forgot I typed it. I guess the thing is... I DID have an interest in it, but just watching this trailer, the more I saw, the more it felt like the same old stuff. If people enjoy it, that's great, but calling it an homage is almost silly in a way, since the same old stuff has never really gone away. I'm not saying it'll be a bad game. I think I'm just getting older and want to see something new, but we're not getting it. "Brand new IP!" these days typically means a new story in a familiar format. The people who made Final Fantasy have a new IP that looks and feels like Final Fantasy, complete with the exact same style of airships we've seen hundreds of times... but instead of just one section of the game being covered in snow, now it's the ENTIRE game. Ok. The thing is, I'll totally admit it LOOKS great, and I like the feel of the trailer. It's just not new, and that's frustrating for an old man like me.
I R Tangerine
Good news for Switch. I'll still probably get on Steam. =
YEP!
@edcomics
Honestly, that's a really refreshing attitude. As an oldhead myself, I find to many people my age clamor for the old days with a blinding sense of nostalgia - like, I'm sorry if you grew up with Mike Tyson's Punch Out! and Pro Wrestling on the NES (both full price, full-value titles), you see the appeal and unmistakable "Nintendo-ness" in ARMS.
I Am Setsuna is not for you. It is really aimed at people pining for the SNES golden days, and without that driving nostalgia factor is very medicore. I enjoyed my time with it very much but didn't find anything on reflection particularly worthwhile besides the soundtrack and the sentiment.
Octopath Traveler looks pretty rad, and definitely not same old, same old. What systems do you have? What do you think you're looking for? I though Xenoblade Chronicles X was incredible - top JRPG since the halcyon days of Chrono Trigger and FFVI. I just finished FXV and believe it's the best 3D FF yet despite it's quirks and some rough edges. Digimonstory Cyberslueth felt incredibly fresh and vibrant while being rooted in the old-school. Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization and Tales of Berseria look pretty interesting too, and somewhat fresh if you've been avoiding the genre for a while. Outside of fantasy, Yakuza 0 looks like an amazing Action RPG, and there's a lot of really interesting indie efforts that share some of the better elements of JRPG DNA.
@Xaessya Hah, upraised.
I'll get this for The Switch ... "IF" it gets a physical release this time ... which likely means I won't get it.
