THQ Nordic claimed headlines and some goodwill a few months ago when it confirmed Darksiders: Warmastered Edition for the Wii U, helping Nintendo gamers catch up after the previous release of Darksiders II on the system. Though it'll naturally be less flashy than on PS4 and Xbox One - for example 30fps instead of 60 - it's a game that some Wii U owners are keen to try out.
Nevertheless, the publisher is in danger of squandering that goodwill - it recently delayed the game to 22nd November, also announcing that it'd only hit the eShop on that date, with the Wii U disc version due "at a later stage". Now, in a press release primarily focused on PS4 Pro support for the release, the publisher has even delayed the download version to an unspecified date.
You can see the relevant press release extract below (bold emphasis added).
On November 22, Darksiders Warmastered Edition will release on Sony's Playstation®4, and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft.
The PC version will be released on November 29, and Nintendo's Wii U™ version (both retail and digital) will follow at a later stage. Information on the release date will follow soon.
The absence of a release window is a little concerning, and the delay of the eShop version is surprising; perhaps the port simply isn't ready. We'll ask THQ Nordic for further details and share any response.
It's disappointing, in any case, and takes a promising late year release off the cards, for now at least.

Still going to keep my physical copy on pre-order just in case. I've been waiting to play this one before starting on my Wii U copy of the 2nd.
Over the past 3 years that statement is roughly translated to "it has been cancelled"
I still plan to get this, provided it doesn't get pushed until after the switch comes out.
Delays delays! "Wii U version will follow at a later date when nobody cares anymore"
Might as well put it on the Switch.
That's a shame, I would've got this. Now it's a waiting game...
They say war never dies, but Warmastered editions sure do.
At least, on on the Wii U.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll still arrive at a later date. I'm not going to cancel my pre order. Damn it anyway, this is so disappointing.
Christmas is cancelled this year! No NES Classic Mini, no Nintendo published Wii U games and now my last purchase of the year isn't coming out either. Thanks Nintendo!
Sigh. I was looking forward to it too. So long as it gets released I'll buy it though.
Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft.
Was that really necessary?.
Well that really sucks. One of the last few good games I wanted on the system.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
"Thanks Nintendo!"
Well,
1) More MinESs are coming before Christmas
2) Nintendo didn't have anything to do with this delay
Not saying your complaints aren't valid, but it isn't as bad as you make it out to be.
Why don't they say straight up it is cancelled? It certainly is looking that way, and I wouldn't blame them. Who wants to invest more resources in a dead console?
Predictable. This release has been fishy for at least a month. Most retailers delayed the game about a week before Nordic said anything to anyone, and that "digital only" comment about the Wii U version didn't seem convincing. I'll never say never as I'm still shocked Wii U got Watch Dogs, but who knows. Maybe December 28th when nobody is paying attention.
The Wii U version would obviously get put to one side while they focus on releasing the other versions, so the additional delay isn't surprising.
A 2016 release probably isn't completely out of the window yet, but until they get back to work on it they can't guarantee it either, so it's probably better for them not to give a date for now.
@Luna_110 Well, if the port is nearly done they're as well pushing it out on the eShop, at least, if nothing else to try and make back some of their investment.
@rjejr Well, on the bright side, this message does rather conclusively make it clear that (provided it will just be delayed and not cancelled) there will be both a digital AND a physical release, just like I told you about a month or so ago.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Christmas was saved for us, PS4 Slim delivered Saturday, hidden away for now, Ratchet and Clank and FFVX will be there too. Though in fairness my wife did wait in line for over an hour at the Nintendo store on Friday so we'll have the NES Mini under the tree as well.
Last days of Wii U PR-Language lesson #1: "At a later stage" = never ever.
Knowing anything related to THQ, it's probably never getting released. How about that Wii U port of Metro Last Light we were promised years ago?
@ThanosReXXX Ain't dated yet though is it? I'm expecting a statement regarding the cancellation of the disc version to go something like this - "Due to our inability to get the Wii U version finished before the busy holiday shopping season we have made the unfortunate but necessary decision to cancel the retail release of the game and only release it digitally." They may add something in there about Nintendo's halting production of the Wii U or emphasis on the Switch.
And even if it does get a Wii U disc release, if it's in 2017 nobody cares, all focus will be on Switch starting Jan 13.
Yeah this statement kind of serves as a death knell. I'm guessing it's going to quietly be cancelled.
Well it just makes sense. Consoles with bigger audiences and sales potential get priority while dead consoles are afterthoughts. Wii U owners who intend on getting this should still be grateful they're getting a physical copy at least. Vita owners are at the mercy of publishers who choose digital only, which makes it more difficult to buy games sometimes because Vita memory cards are ridiculously expensive and the Vita's massive library of great games can cause one to fill even a 64 GB card very, VERY quickly. And basically, data tetris can be a pain in the ass, but necessary.
Oh well, I want the physical Wii U version anyway, so I'm waiting.
I just hope it comes to Switch. I really liked Darksiders 2 on Wii U during the short period that I had a U.
@Antray1984 Agreed, sadly.
I liked this game, though my PS3 copy has a good bit of screen tearing. I haven't purchased a PS4 or Xbox One, and am unlikely to do so, as they both boast primarily remasters, with a few exceptions. May get a Wii U disc version if it actually releases.
Oooooh right in the feels. Seriously though if it's not coming why tease us. I know the wii u is dead but we're starving over here. Anything decently good will do. Oh well.
It's getting delayed for amiibo support. 😉
Maybe it's next in the queue after Project Cars?
I'll keep my preorder open on Amazon for the physical release, though expecting it to be cancelled now.
I can wait. I liked Darksiders 2 on Wii U, so I'm looking forward to this game.
Really hope Wii U owners get to play it. It was the one game I wished for when I had mine. Good Luck!
I think it will get shoved to Switch. Almost everything will be shoved to Switch. Same will happen with Yooka Laylee, mark my words. I am also worried about the upcoming Shovel knight dlc. No new dlc for the Wii u version, I guess.
I'll definitely still buy it. I'm going to be buying up every cheap Wii U game I can find once the switch launches. Poor sales means that half of the Wii U's library is going to be rare, and let's not forget: even though it was not a commercial success, those who owned the system generally loved it. That won't be forgotten...
Oh, by the way. I'm still holding my breath for a physical release of Fast Racing Neo in North America too
God sake just put it on The Switch
sounds to me like this is now a switch game... hoping i'm wrong... -_-
AKA: "Cancelled".
@Antray1984 Good someone who tells it like ot is.Well done.Put it on Switch quickly I'd say.
I'm more surprised this was announced as a Wii U game, than seeing it get delayed. May as well put it on Switch instead.
Feel like cancelling my pre order. Even if it does eventually materialise, the way they're handling this has lost my confidence that the port will be satisfactory. Think I'll wait for the reviews...
Wow, who saw this coming when they delayed the physical copy? raises hand
I'll be cancelling my pre-order, if I want the game I should buy it on anything but a Nintendo console
@EllenJMiller me to!
@ElkinFencer10 THQ folded before that was released blame the company that picked up the property as THQ was a huge supporter before they went bankrupt. I say the loss of THQ was the first major blow against the legitimacy of the Wii U as a "hardcore" system.
So besides Pokemon this year what does Nintendo have? NES mini is out since you need to sell an organ...
@Pink_Floyd SMR $9.99 on iOS starting December 15th.
@Spanjard yep, I'd put it on the switch too if I were them.
The wording of the press release makes it sound like they're being sponsored by Microsoft or something; specifically calling the Xbox One 'the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft', while simply stating the other systems' names as they are. How odd.
@Luna_110
Totally agree with your sentiment.
I too think this isn't going to see the light of day on the WiiU. Especially now Nintendo have gone on record stating production has stopped.
Even the YouTube trailer attached to this article never had the WiiU listed in the platforms it was coming too.
Would like to be wrong as I'd pick this up to fill the gap until I get my hands on Switch.
@rjejr I had the same idea about the Wii U version of Zelda BotW, but people told me I was wrong, so people with a Wii U that will either not get a Switch or that will get a Switch at a later date, will still pick up any decent title coming their way.
And this is a good game; I have the original, and it's actually better than the second one.
But if the disc version is going to be cancelled, I expect the digital version to be not that far behind, so it'll be all or nothing. The difference in cost is negligible, so that's no reason to only do digital.
So, are we getting this BEFORE or AFTER we get Project CARS?
Hopefully it'll still come out on the Wii U cuz i wanna play it on a Nintendo system but a NS launch title would be cool tho rather than a total cancellation.
That's a bummer, but I've been expecting bad news on this release since the delay on the disc version of the game. I was all set to download the game next week - oh well. Back to Xenoblade.
I'm hoping it's to fix the FPS issue.
yep our lives are over
Its a good thing I have a stack of games to beat with little time to play them or this would bother me more.
In other words, canceled.
Well, that's disappointing. This doesn't bode well at all. I was really looking forward to playing it soon.
Ummmmm..... Well, no surprises here. Look guys, Wii U has tanked harder than any Nintendo home console ever (unless you count Virtual Boy), ergo I wasn't expecting much to be released personally. Hell, I was primed to kick mine out of the door when DK: Tropical Freeze was announced, but realised it still had a lot to give. 2 years later and I'm glad I didn't, but I wasn't under any illusions as to what kind of support it would receive.
Anyway, this wasn't Nintendo's decision, but they are kinda responsible in a way. Let's hope they smash the Switch out of the park, there's a fair bit riding on it.
I know I'm normally pessimistic, but I'm going to believe them. I reckon we're still getting it.
So is that officially nothing coming this christmas/new year for Wii U, abysmal really. 3ds isn't much better either unless you like Pokemon
Cuddly DICK style move. (Cuddly Dick is a villainous character from Yonderland, an award winning FAMILY FRIENDLY television series!)
DICK King Smith is a famous childrens author.
Are we going to censor the name 'Dick' now??
Honestly- Stop with the ridiculous censorship.
@HappyMaskedGuy Cuddly rabbit style move
We've been hugged to death by disappointment!
Typical.
I don't think they would've bothered even announcing this for Wii U this late in the game if it wasn't coming.
Sucks that it's delayed but let's be honest here, we're lucky to be getting this game at all. I mean, even Nintendo has already pulled out.
@Zadaris Won't be long before they are blaming the previous establishment of Elders.
I'm mostly getting this just to support THQ in hope of seeing a good 3rd game.
I can wait
@ThanosReXXX "The difference in cost is negligible, so that's no reason to only do digital."
I see it less about cost, more about the factory where it was supposed to be manufactured for Wii U telling them, "Sorry, we had a day set aside for you in early Nov, but the next time we can squeeze you in is early January, we're really busy right now." So Nordic says "Well let's just go digital then and be done w/ it, no point in waiting until next year to put out the disc w/ Switch launching then."
@rjejr We'll see, my friend, we'll see. I'm not quite ready to share your cynicism yet..
Such a bummer. I missed this announcement last week, so it feels like a kick in the nuts to find out on launch day. US retailers are saying Dec.31, but Amazon.ca lists March 31, 2017...not encouraging.
@ThomasBW84 Any word recently on the Wii U version of this game, Darksiders:Warmastered? It's now January 3, 2017, Playtonic has pulled Yooka-Laylee and the Switch event is in 9 days. I don't think it's released yet, Amazon has it 12/31/2017, but by now they should have announced a date or a cancelation. Unless they are waiting for January 13th to announce it on Switch instead, which Playtonic should have done w/ YL if it's coming to Switch any time soon.
Looking forward to good news from the Switch event, fingers crossed.
