Re: Nintendo Approached Cyanogen For Switch OS, But Was Told To "Stick It"

dsparil

@Adharst, pure hubris probably. This sounds like it would have been around the launch Cyanogen Inc. and all the inflated expectations that come with a new company. He explicitly set his sights on wresting control of Android from Google* and probably thought that anything that didn't further that goal was beneath him.

Re: Preview: Immersing Ourselves in the World of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

@ThomasBW84 I noticed that all your screenshots are at 1080p, but all of USGamer's are at 720p, and those are said to be straight from the share button. Does the share button in fact produce different resolutions depending on docking status?

Also, did you notice any significant differences in quality when docked and undocked? For example, does the depth of field in the second screenshot translate well onto the smaller screen?

Re: Video: The Surprising Origins of the Wii Virtual Console Super Mario Bros. ROM

dsparil

The ROM content being identical bit is vague to the point of being misleading. It is very easy to find perfect dumps of NES games. The VC ROM is basically 100% likely to be a perfect copy. So obviously it was downloaded because I can find an identical copy online 🙄. It'd be one thing if it was a known bad dump of the game, but there was either no attempt to discern this or the ROM is perfect and leaving this out makes everything seem more nefarious.

The presence of a header is odd and would have given me pause if the ROM content part wasn't so sketchy. Maybe Nintendo came to the same conclusion and the iNES author and decided to use an existing format instead of coming up with their own. This is something that needs more research, not a funny story turned lecture like @Chozo said.

Re: Rumour: Fire Emblem Fates Could Be Getting A Nintendo Switch Port

dsparil

This is so obviously a bug with their website. Every game page has 4 "You may also like" games at the bottom. If you go to the page for a Switch game, the first listed game always has "for nintendo switch" at the end of it's alt text (a description for screen readers or if the image doesn't load). Other games that do this are FIFA, NBA 2k18 and Super Bomberman R. FIFA and NBA 2k18 for Mario and Sonic at the Rio Olympics and Bomberman for Pokemon Sun with Lunala Figure.

All 4 games on the Bomberman page are variations of Pokemon S/M and only the first listed Moon with the figurine come up as "for nintendo switch". Should I start a rumor that Pokemon Moon but not Sun is coming to the Switch and only with a figure? It shares 100% the same basis as this one. The only difference is that as a piece of DLC, Revelations doesn't have a cover so it doesn't have an immediately contradictory "3DS" running down the side.

Re: Feature: Xenoblade Chronicles X - One Year Later

dsparil

I liked XCX overall. The main plot is a little disappointing especially considering that two of the chapters are basically just boss fights with no other gameplay. There being a main villain with a grand plan felt unnecessary because there's already a "countdown" supplying tension and the main plot isn't long enough for it to make a huge amount of sense. What was really nice though was the side content about the integration of new alien species into NLA. There was a lot of good story development there. I think it would have been better if instead of having a villain, you had to unite all the aliens instead.

Re: Soapbox: It's High Time Seiken Densetsu 3 Got A Western Release

dsparil

From what I've read before, it wasn't released outside of Japan due to bugs: Critical Hits don't work, apparently only a class's base evasion is used making Agility useless, shields don't work correctly taking away Duran's unique ability. An interview with the lead programmer on Secret Of Evermore from this site mentions it:

NL: Secret of Evermore has often gotten the incorrect distinction of being the game that US gamers received instead of Seiken Densetsu 3, which would have been the true sequel to our Secret of Mana. Why do you think that is and what do you have to say to those who believe this?

BF: Well, you can't really blame people for thinking that. It was a reasonable guess, it just happened to be incorrect. I was also disappointed when Seiken Densetsu 3 didn't get the US nod, but I had a chance to play the Japanese version, so I know it had some bugs. People who have played Seiken Densetsu 3 via emulation might know what I'm talking about. At the time, Nintendo was extremely strict about its zero-bug policy, and even with Square's history with Nintendo, I think they might have had a difficult time getting it through certification. They also might have had trouble getting the American consumer to accept its flaws without returning it to the store, which was much more common then. Of course, then we went and shipped Evermore with some bugs, so who I am to talk?

Re: Video: These Five Mario Games Were Never Really Mario Games

dsparil

The part on Mario Teaches Typing is so misleading. I learned how to type using it, and it has full music, sound effects and a voice for Mario! Sure, it had PC speaker sound effects if you didn't have a sound card, but pretty much any "game" from 1992 is going to have that as a fall back even if it sounds like garbage. This video is what it's actually supposed to sound like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsYW_8IX09o

Re: We Almost Got A Pokémon And Fire Emblem Crossover Game

dsparil

@SamirMalik

The distinctive gameplay element in the mainline SMT games is demon negotiation and recruitment neither of which is in TMS. Mirages are basically the same as Personas. Don't forget that Persona and the other spinoffs that don't have negotiation and recruitment are not released under the SMT name in Japan. For example, Persona, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor and the PS2 Devil Summoner games were all released under their bare name.

The original trailer barely showed anything, but what it did show was characters from mainline SMT which little in common with TMS.

Re: Review: Zero Time Dilemma (3DS)

dsparil

I feel like this game is actually better if you haven't actually played the other two. Returning characters have different personalities and significant plot elements are retconned, so it's so much more frustrating overall as a fan of the series.

Uchikoshi's self described twist first, plot second writing process really blows up here. Several of the big reveals and plot elements come from basically nowhere. This isn't to say that the others are perfect in this regard, but the weaker elements were less central to the whole plot.

This isn't the "real" third game which would have essentially been VLR Part 2. That was supposed to be developed right after but was canceled due to low sales. What we got instead is a soft reboot of the series that punts any resolution to a 4th game.

Re: LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Wii U Starts Well in UK Charts After Delayed Release

dsparil

@SLIGEACH_EIRE
That review is really overblown. It is buggier than the other Lego games, but it isn't that bad overall and seems to also be buggy on other systems. The graphics stuff is flat out wrong. I've played through the entire story plus the extra missions, and I didn't see any of the graphical issues that review brings up. There are a few framerate drops, but it isn't anywhere near as pervasive as the review makes it seem. It makes me wonder if there's something wrong with their system or if it's overheating.

This is probably my favorite Star Wars and favorite Lego game. It's like a fuller version of the Rebel Assault rail shooters from the 90s, or a better version of Rebel Strike with the balance of on foot and vehicle sections swapped.

Re: Talking Point: Faith In Yo-kai Watch May Pay Off in the West, Though Overthrowing Pokémon is a Long Shot

dsparil

I think that it might have made more sense to release Yo-Kai Watch 3 in the place of 2 in the US. Its Japanese release is in July, it takes place in the US and it includes yokai based on more familiar things like chicken nuggets and baseball. It'd be a second shot with more familiar underpinnings.

Speaking of release delay, the 26 months between the Japanese and US releases of YW1 isn't completely out of line for a Level-5 game particularly if you're comparing it to Layton. The first game and the last game had a year delay, but the other 4 plus the spinoff are closer to 22 months.

Re: Editorial: From Metroid: Other M to Star Fox Zero, the Awkward Experimentation With Beloved Franchises

dsparil

I think that Metroid Fusion was about as much plot as the series is really able to handle. Other M was okay as a game, but the plot really is horrible from concept to execution. The stuff with Samus having PTSD from Ridley killing her parents (or something similar) makes no sense considering how often they've fought. The overt sexualization of Samus was also a huge misstep. Smash does that too, but it also doesn't have a scene of her crying with the camera ogling her from every angle.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo Was Wrong To Turn Its Back On The Wii Remote

dsparil

I miss the Wii Remote. Netflix on the Wii was the best since you could just point at what you wanted. I don't mind motion controls in general, but it relied too much on the developer putting in the effort to make sure it worked well. Okami had surprisingly imprecise controls, although that release does have an aura of sloppiness e.g. using an IGN watermarked image of the cover art.

Re: The My Nintendo Rewards 'Missions' Show What's Needed to Earn Freebies and Discounts

dsparil

@Vallu
The 3DS can run DS games without needing VC.

@MailOrderNinja
I'm a little disappointed because the discount and free game system via Gold Coins is less flexible than the Wii U Digital Deluxe Promotion that ran from the Wii U's launch until 1/1/15. With that, you got 10% back as general eShop credit. Deal-wise, this new system is roughly the same, but with a limited selection. However, since you don't need to spend anything to get Platinum Coins, that it definitely a plus.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai Tackles Criticisms of Bonus Features in Games

dsparil

@crzysortagamer I think what he means is that the total amount of work isn't distributed evenly throughout every aspect of the game. To use Smash as an example, balancing each character is a large task that underlies nearly every feature of the game. Target Smash or even Event Mode aren't that much work in comparison and throwing those out wouldn't actually free up that many resources.

Re: Two Tribes Co-Founder Doesn't Think He Would Have Bought His Own Game

dsparil

I got Toki Tori 2 day one, got stuck once the non linear part of the game started (at the giant crystal), and never picked it up again until 2+ came out seven months later. At that point, I had completely forgotten where I was supposed to go and I haven't touch it since. I doubt that's an uncommon occurrence.

Considering complicated the overworld map is, being about to instantly go to any visited place/doorway would have cut down significantly on frustration and tedium. Having an actual level map instead of a line representing the length of the level would have been good too. A line works in something NSMB because you're almost exclusively going left to right, but it's useless and confusing if the level has a significant amount of vertical space and back and forth movement.

Honestly, I don't think it was content that made TT2 fail. Two Tribes poorly spent the money they had. It wasn't going to be a Wii U game originally, Steam platforms and iOS only, so that would have increased development costs. The iOS version was dropped causing other platforms to soak up those costs. It was also a mistake to work on the level editor at all if sales were poor.

Re: Video: The Top Ten Worst Designed Pokémon Ever

dsparil

Gen. 5 Pokemon are supposed to be similar to older ones. The whole point of B&W was to have a complete new set of "native" Pokemon and many of them are deliberately based on older ones. To say they're unimaginative is sort of missing the point.
