Earlier today we shared the My Nintendo rewards that are on offer in Japan, with plenty of coins required to unlock exclusive downloads, discounts and DLC. The question is, how easy is it to earn these coins?
Well, the graph below shows that the options for Platinum Coins are certainly varied, with Nintendo Account and Miitomo at the heart of earning that currency; daily interaction with the latter smart device app is the quickest way to access some goodies.
The gold coins are solely earned by purchasing eShop downloads - bear in mind this only applies to games you buy, not DLC or 3DS HOME Themes. For reference 1000 Yen is around $9.
You can compare that graph to the reward prices below:
Miitomo
- Mario Suit – 250 Platinum Points – can be redeemed until 5/1
- 1 game ticket – 85 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 5 times until 4/1
- 5 game tickets – 420 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 2 times until 4/1
- 10 game tickets – 250 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time
Discounts
- 20% off Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) – 950 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 20% off Dr. Luigi (Wii U) – 230 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 20% off New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) – 750 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 20% off Brain Age: Concentration Training (3DS) – 600 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 40% off Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (3DS) – 130 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 40% off Ultimate NES Remix (3DS) – 105 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 50% off Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move (3DS) – 50 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 40% off New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U) – 160 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 50% off Metroid: Other M (Wii U) – 90 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
- 50% off Super Mario Galaxy (Wii U) – 90 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1
Games
- My Nintendo Picross – The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (3DS) – 1,000 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 10/1
- Super Mario 64 (Wii U) – 120 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 8/1
- New Super Luigi U (Wii U) – 240 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 8/1
- Pikmin 3 DLC: Battle Enemies! Stages 7-10 (Wii U) – 30 Gold Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 8/1
- WarioWare: Touched! (3DS) – 1,000 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 7/1

- My Nintendo Theme 2: Donkey Kong – 200 Platinum Points – can be redeemed 1 time until 5/1
We'll be looking into the 'economy' of the My Nintendo programme in an editorial soon, but in the meantime let us know what you think of it in the comments.

Wow, Nintendo seems to be serious with the incentives for using their services!
I find it a little alarming that Platinum Points require you to link to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ to your Miitomo or Nintendo Accounts.
A lot of those requirements are a pain. I don't like giving out Facebook or Twitter info unless I need to, and I doubt anyone near me will be using Miitomo.
Edit: Plus, having to do daily tasks always eventually becomes a chore.
I remember the even older Nintendo Club when you got a handful of stars for checking in daily, I'm kind of glad that is back with the checking miiverse and the eshop on a weekly basis. If you do that anyway and nothing else you may get yourself a free theme every now and then or even a cheap app/game like the Zelda picross without too much inconvenience.
Wow, what a load of suck. The only reward I want is the Zelda Picross.
Unfortunately, I want it quite a lot. Dunno how I'll scrounge up 1K platinum. And @TheY, some of us avoid those apps. I've got quite a few apps on my phone, and the only one linked to my Facebook account is the Facebook app.
That moment when you look at a list for discounts and such and you have everything decent... lol
Though, it is kind of annoying how everything is digital games. Buy the good game to earn points for the good games you already bought. That's what usually annoyed me with the Club Nintendo digital download. I guess I was hoping for some physical rewards as well because I loved the figures and such.
But, at least there is other way to getting point as well so that kind of makes up for it.
Hopefully they won't start locking DLC behind this like they did Amiibo.
i like some of these, some im not sure, like getting "5 Hearts" (sounds like My Nintendo The Legends of Zelda: TP)
and then there's a few im not a fan of like getting amount of money spend on games and such, just to be reward with Coins. is kinda eh. (although i'm going to do it anyways, just to get most of those discounts and free game xD, even if im not fan of some of them.)
Love this idea and not sure how anyone cannot. It's basically purchasing and achievements getting you discounts and free games.
Cool
Quick question, are the dates you have to redeem the points by in the list done in American or British format? I presume American, as it would make more sense if it was at the start of each month.
"WarioWare: Touched! (3DS)"...? I thought DS VC was only for Wii U?
@MailOrderNinja The idea is great. Just a shame Physical games are not included but that aside. I agree. Also I'm on a mission to get that free copy of Warioware Touched. 1000 platinum points seems achievable!!
@RupeeClock I hate that too. I don't want it to be too easy to find my personal details etc. Most of my profiles are fake in any case, but still don't like it.
I suppose it's easy enough to get the platinum points, just a bit irritating.
@ThomasBW84 Yes please for the editorial looking at the "economy" of it all! Will be interesting to see if the system is more generous in some regions than others due to differing currencies etc.
@Vallu
The 3DS can run DS games without needing VC.
@MailOrderNinja
I'm a little disappointed because the discount and free game system via Gold Coins is less flexible than the Wii U Digital Deluxe Promotion that ran from the Wii U's launch until 1/1/15. With that, you got 10% back as general eShop credit. Deal-wise, this new system is roughly the same, but with a limited selection. However, since you don't need to spend anything to get Platinum Coins, that it definitely a plus.
1,000 Platinum Points =
100 Points for linking Nintendo ID with Nintendo Account
+
Signing in to the eshop and miiverse for 15 weeks (30 * 2 * 15 = 900)
So can get a free game in 15 weeks.
1,000 Platinum Points would normally take around 4 months to collect just by visiting the eshop and miiverse once a week. Getting a free game (My Nintendo Picross or WarioWare: Touched!) every 4 months for doing something I already do isn't too bad.
A theme would take a month.
Am I the only one confused as to why we have two different types of points? Just seems a bit silly...
This is awesome, I hope that all of their mobile games have the MyNintendo rewards integrated in. Hopefully NX does it as well!
@Discipledoctor judging from how Nintendo talks about this, its going to be tied into everything they do. They commented about earning coins by visiting the theme park and even watching a film (at a cinema not via an app)
60 free points a week just for using Miiverse and the eShop is rather nice if you ask me.
@NintendoFan64 One type of points requires buying stuff, the other doesn't. Nintendo thus control what you can and can't get without actually spending money. Makes sense to me.
@NintendoFan64 What's more confusing is that gold points seem to be worth more then platinum ones.
Sounds good to me. Since the demise of Club Nintendo and the Platinum Points thing, I've really felt their absence. This was pretty much what I was hoping for.
Great to see some incentives tied to purchases/achievements now. This is a step in the right direction. If it catches on, it will only grow and get better.
I am liking how they reward gold coins, it looks more generous than I thought. I thought they would either match valve ($45=45 coins) or worse round down ($45=40 coins), tax not included. Hope we get the same treatment.
Did you all find the secret mission?
So.....Metroid Other M is coming to the Wii U eShop????
Also, I have every single game mentioned in this article. This truly sucks. I have zero motivation to do anything in Miitomo now.
@bezerker99 has been available in japan since yesterday or so
@bezerker99 I bet you don't have My Nintendo Picross
I don't use facebook or twitter or Miiverse. I only go to the Eshop if I need to do updates or I know I want to buy something.
95% of the time I only buy physical and I only use my Wii U and 3DS to actually play my games.
So for me, the new rewards system SUCKS! Rather have Club Nintendo Back!!!!!!!!!!
@Raptor78 I wonder if, as it gets rolling, we will see something like once you play a game online you register it even if it's physical and you get points?
@freaksloan @Sakura @crimsontadpoles @RupeeClock
Sheez... It takes 5 minutes to create a fake/alternate Twitter/Facebook account. Some of you guys are paranoid. The government won't be monitoring you unless you're into illegal activities. And you could always set restrictions on your accounts.
@MailOrderNinja Probably not. Because that way one copy could be registered multiple times.
Out of all of the games I could get, I would get the classic Super Mario 64!
@Splatburst
Not really a matter of paranoia, I just don't want a Facebook account.
@Splatburst I've already got fake accounts! I will link them, I just don't use them and it's an irritation that other services that I do use require these other accounts. I don't like social networks.
@Sakura @RupeeClock
I don't like it too and don't open them. I just use them for gaming services requirements such as My Nintendo.
Twilight Princess Picross... I'm intrigued...
@RupeeClock That's what throw-away accounts are for.
@manu0 Because you have to pay money to buy games to earn those. So they're more valuable than the free platinum points.
Am I the only one who finds a lot of the Platinum Point incentives a bit... tacky?
So absolutely nothing for those who prefer physical retail games. Great. At least they got rid of the end of the year Gold and Platinum rewards so I won't have to worry about keeping my points high. Let's just hope they aren't smartasses about 3rd party digital games. I bought quite a few on sale for $10 or under just to rack up CN coins.
@technotreegrass Huh? You can get free games by checking eshop and Miiverse every week. Buying digitally only gets you discounts. Not sure what eveyone's grumbling about, this system is way more generous than I thought it'd be.
One question: Are the Miitomo platinum the same as regular platinum? So can points earned there get free games or just in-game stuff?
@joedick Yeah, you're rewarded for Miitomo stuff (I wouldn't be surprised if people abuse the comment system, friending strangers soley for the mutual benefit of coins), but you get extra coins for buying games, especially retail games. I wish to buy a physical cart of Hyrule Warriors, so I won't get any extra coins, but someone who wants the digital version will get extra coins.
The platinum coin system looks generous, but the gold coin system may be a bit problematic for me. I buy retail games physically, and I find it a bit unfair that someone would earn coins for their digital purchase when I spent the same amount for the physical version.
I'm hoping that new releases after My Nintendo launches will have some kind of physical code slip like with the old Club Nintendo system.
@GloverMist You just answered your own question. Frankly I think everyone should switch to the American format. So jarring to see 911 written as 11/9, and it aligns with the ISO format of YYYYMMDD.
And yeah, while facebook is a pain in the ass as trolls can report your normal posts for nudity and the mods will start asking for a photo of your ID (!) which means no fake/alts, for Twitter anyone could just make a fake/alt.
@Vallu
I immediately noticed that as well. After a bit of looking around, that doesn't to be a misprint on NL's side. I'd love DS games on the 3DS.
So no unified account then?
Well, I checked my spending on Wii U and 3DS for the last year and it seems that, though I buy retail in the main, I also buy quite a few eshop only games, meaning I spent well over £200 that would have earned me gold points. Won't get me to buy digital over physical, but I might get more out of the scheme than I initially thought. Shame DLC isn't counted though.
They should make Badge Arcade plays purchasable via My Nintendo!
I was hoping to be able to earn smash bros DLC... but this is still really cool!
@crimsontadpoles You won't have to do daily tasks, it's optional.
Also:
Can the coins labeled "Miitomo" be use as normal platinum coins? Or can they only be used in miitomo?
@GH05T That will probably come with NX
@Vallu For purchasing yes, but this reward program seems to do whatever it wants. XD
@Sakura I'm probably in a similar bracket of spending although Wii u only. I'll always choose physical if I can but I'm seeing myself get more and more familiar with spending more money on digital games now. I guess if nx IS digital only as rumored we're gonna be spending more on the e shop
@ULTRA-64 That was one of my first thoughts too (that the ground is being prepared for an all-digital NX). In some ways I really hope not. In the EU digital games (at least Nintendo games) are usually £50 while the equivalent physical release is £30-£40. They can be even cheaper second hand. Digital only at the moment would increase costs by about 25%. The market will decide in the end, but with gloomy economic forecasts worldwide, increasing prices via digital only will be a hard sell. We're not there yet though.
Generally, seems like a good idea per the rewards, and some good methods of obtaining the currency (i.e. just logging into eshop / miiverse weekly).
Per the daily rewards, it'd be cool if one day, you could earn a portion of the money up to the daily value, i.e. instead of getting 5 comments on your answers a day = 10 coins, it'd be nice if you could get partial credit (2 answers - 4 coins), for those who don't have a lot of friends or activity from friends, it could be harder to get the full achievements. You may also get people who just grind for the rewards, so you get / give answers to other people's comments that are simple/barebones, like "k" or "I agree", which may get annoying after awhile. Partial coin credit may reduce that to some extent as ppl may be more likely to just answer questions at will over trying to reach a quota.
Would be nice if eventually, the reward system is just integrated with eshop, so that all games can receive discounts (variable on price and probably if it's a first party title over otherwise), i.e. x number of gold coins nets $1 off non-nintendo titles or $2 off nintendo titles (may be 'cheaper' to some extent for nintendo to give discounts digitally as opposed to paying out money to others)
One more thing, what's a game ticket? Something to use with the Miitomo app only?
As I remember, when Club Nintendo started recognizing downloads as purchases it actually checked a player's purchases and allowed them to get points for their previous purchases. Any chance the same will happen here? If so, I should be getting some hefty discounts after the last few eshop sales.
Kind of lame the only thing I'd want is Picross, but buying Nintendo games doesn't help you earn it, so I'd basically have no motivation to spend any money on their games.
Wow, that's some VERY generous rewards with those gold coins. Basically it's going to be $1 = 1 Gold Coin
And you can get New Super Luigi U for basically $240 spent, or $3 Pikmin 3 DLC for $30 spent- it's 10% back give or take a little. This is like a permanent Nintendo Digital Deluxe Program, just with a set of rewards rather than eShop vouchers. Perhaps not as good due to the restrictions of the rewards, but, it's permanent for one and for two there are exclusive rewards- particularly games- that money can't buy. You'll get no complaints from me.
Now, I do buy physical for all my games, but, I still buy a lot of VC and indie games, and some digital retail for my 2nd "on the go" 3DS. So I'll get my fair share of coins one way or another. Plus, will be taking full advantage of that weekly Miiverse/eShop checkin.
@ZAZX
Why? If they wanna create exclusive content, be it for a reward, to accompany amiibo, etc, why do you feel entitled to it? That's not yours. Does not belong to you. Just like the Game & Watch physical DS game as a Club Nintendo reward. It's all just exclusive content to those who either earned it or purchased it.
If they want to create content to give to whom they desire, they can do that. Which is why the whole amiibo outrage never made sense- that content was created for those who spent their hard earned money on the figure, that's exactly what they paid for and they should get it. And if you didn't buy the amiibo, you don't deserve it, cause you paid nothing.
I hope people that can't actually play Miitomo have a fair chance to get some of their exclusive games D: Also WarioWare Touched on 3DS? You mean they'll port over DS games no problem but they can't do GBA?
So when can i start earning platinum coins with actual 3ds games instead of a mobile app?
