Re: Sony Once Again Takes A Leaf From Nintendo's Playbook In Japan

dmcc0

@Maxz Yeah, maybe I wasn't clear enough. From what I've read the Japanese-only console will only play carts from Japan. Those carts do work in other region consoles, but no guarantee they'll have a language you can understand.

@darkswabber Just going by what I've read. The language on the console is locked to Japanese so menus etc can't be changed and you can only register an account from Japan. If there's an in-game option to select another language, you might be able to do so, but if it just matches the system language then it'll select the Japanese version. From memory, a lot of eShop games in Japan don't have other language options - even though they would in other parts of the world. I'd assume Japanese physicals would be mostly similar in that regard.

Re: Poll: How Many New Games Do You Buy In A Year?

dmcc0

Can't remember the last time I bought a game at release, or even close to release 🤷‍♂️
Haven't bought a single Switch game this year - new or old, but I have bought a handful of older games in sales on PS5 and Series X

Re: PS5 Digital Edition Now More Expensive Than Switch 2 In UK & Europe

dmcc0

The timing of this seems very strange given Sony had a digital Astro Bot bundle for £339 just a few weeks ago. I seems for once I timed it right - got the bundle with a discount code for £312 with the intention to pick up the drive add-on later - they've just dropped the price on that from £100 to £70 too, so I'll definitely be getting it sooner rather than later.

Re: The Switch 2 Scalpers Are Already Out In Force

dmcc0

@StewdaMegaManNerd I'm not that bothered about scalpers in all honesty - I just don't understand the mentality of the people buying Switch 2 from them at inflated prices when it hasn't even released and pre-orders are still open. Makes it even funnier that people were complaining about the prices, yet others are paying £100+ over the MSRP when there's no need to.

Re: Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Aren't Tied To Nintendo Accounts

dmcc0

@abe_hikura With the larger publishers they would release an initial batch of physical products and would decide if sales justified another print run. They'd keep doing this until sales no longer justify making more physical copies and then just convert to code-in-a-box. It makes no sense for them to have inventory sitting on store shelves if it's not selling, but Code-in-a-box allows them to still have than retail presence without making loads of carts.

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Steam Page Update Kicks Off Another Round Of Fan Speculation

dmcc0

@LastFootnote Not very likely IMO. There's all sorts of rumours and speculation about Xbox at the moment with regards to becoming a 3rd party publisher and getting out of the hardware business, but Game Pass would seem to be the one thing that there's a fairly common consensus the GP is their main focus. Their whole "This is an Xbox" campaign is pushing Game Pass and cloud pretty heavily at the moment.

Re: Niantic Sells Pokémon GO And Entire Gaming Division For $3.5 Billion

@gdk1ng424 @Mando44646 Did you read the article?

"...from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund which owns a 7.5% stake in Nintendo."

You're likely already supporting the "Saudi Regime" if you've bought anything from Nintendo (or Capcom, Koei Tecmo or EA as it's got a stake in them too) in the last few years.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Announces Removal Of Super Famicom Title

dmcc0

@PKDuckman maybe, but that's not how I read it - they were responding to someone else that said about 80% were digital only.

I'm not sure how many physical Switch games there are in total - Deku Deals lists just over 2000, but I'm not sure if those are just currently available. If 85% are playable offline straight from the cart, that's still a few hundred that aren't.

Re: UK Charts: Mario Kart 8 Grabs Silver As Monster Hunter Wilds Makes Its Debut

dmcc0

@Lizuka I think these charts are for physical-only, and Xbox is supposedly around 90% digital at this point so that would explain the discrepancy - and allowing for the fact the PS5 has sold more than double the amount of consoles compared with the Xbox Series Models. Also, for Mortal Kombat 11 specifically, it's on Game Pass so obviously less people are going to be buying it on Xbox when they can access as part of their subscription.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Announces Removal Of Super Famicom Title

dmcc0

@zockermiller Where are you getting that 85% physical figure from? Even a quick glance at the new releases shows that digital-only games outnumber physical releases massively, and it only appears to be heading more towards digital. If anything 85% digital-only is more likely than the other way round.

Re: Poll: Will You Trade In Your Switch When Switch 2 Arrives?

dmcc0

I don't often get consoles day 1 so I'll likely keep the beat-up day-1 model I inherited from my son a few months ago for a year or so before I get Switch 2. If he buys Switch 2 at launch, I'll likely buy his OLED from him and use that for a bit.

I've also got a couple of faulty Switches lying around that are in decent condition (apart from the faults) that I can fix up, so I'm good for now.

Re: Can You Name These Zelda: Majora's Mask Masks?

dmcc0

@-wc- Yeah, I didn't like Phantom Hourglass at all (although I know it's not that well regarded), and never really had the urge to try any of the others after that. My son has all the Switch games so might give one a go eventually, but what I've seen him play didn't really appeal to me. Maybe the older ones on Switch Online might be more my thing 🤷‍♂️

Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Estimated File Size Update

dmcc0

@datamonkey On PS5 you still need to insert he PS4 disc to play the upgraded version (or have purchased the digital version). Without an account system, which Nintendo didn't really have with Wii/3DS, the upgrade option couldn't work like it does on PS4/PS5. Also the differing media formats obviously wouldn't work either.

It might be possible if they do Switch 2 upgrades of Switch games though, as they now have the account system and the various leaks suggest the carts are similar. It's not really a new thing though - Nintendo has a history of re-releasing/ports old games to new systems, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just keep churning out remasters/remakes for new systems and charging full price for them as it's seems to have worked for them in the past.

Re: Your 'Nintendo Switch Year In Review 2024' Stats Are Available Now

dmcc0

Only 15 games and 179h this year, although it's realistically nowhere near that as apparently my second most played game was Pokemon Violet (46h), which I've never played. Guessing my son has been using my profile to play through the game again and trade to his account. 79h on .stitch was my most played, second (that I actually played) was Lumines Remastered at 17h.

Re: Goodboy Galaxy Developer Dramatically Cuts Ties With Physical Distributor

dmcc0

@Bunkerneath This is how businesses work though - you invest money from previous projects into the next project. I'm not saying this is definitely what's going on, but in FPGs case - at least from the outside looking in - is appears that they don't have enough cash to fulfil a specific order until they take the cash for the next game (or 2). The problem with this business model is that you are relying on the next game being at least as popular as the last otherwise you have to cover the cost using funds from 2, 3 or even more games. It creates a vicious cycle where everyone holds off pre-ordering anything because you have a reputation for long delays so you can never fund the previous game.

Re: Goodboy Galaxy Developer Dramatically Cuts Ties With Physical Distributor

dmcc0

@PessitheMystic I ended up cancelling my order for Crimzon Clover nearly 2 years ago after it was pushed back in the schedule again. They said at the time the new date was a 'worst case' and the game would likely be out before then - its since been pushed back at least twice more (and obviously still not been released) 🤦‍♂️

Re: Goodboy Galaxy Developer Dramatically Cuts Ties With Physical Distributor

dmcc0

@S83 Chained Echoes seems to be one of the few games FPG have been posting updates for. The blog on their website seems to suggest it was in stock back in September (although they haven't updated the blog since so no idea if they actually started shipping)

I'm not exactly surprised by this to be honest. I backed Goodboy Galaxy, but as soon as it was announced that FPG were publishing the physical GBA carts I knew it was likely I wasn't going to see it for some time.

I was holding off playing it until I got the physical, but that might be a while off now. Oddly, not knowing who's going to now publish the physicals gives me more confidence I might actually receive it at some point give FPGs track record.
