Re: Updated Nintendo Policies Push For Increased Transparency And Diversity

dmcc0

@SwitchForce Whether women or anyone else were discouraged from going into those types of roles in the first place is not the point - you can't suddenly make up for that by saying "hire more" if they literally can't do the job. By all means change the attitude of schools and educators for the kids that are coming through the system now, but unless you're planning on retraining people for roles they didn't want, then there's not much you can do about the current shortfall in female talent in some sectors.

Re: Updated Nintendo Policies Push For Increased Transparency And Diversity

dmcc0

@TanukiTrooper That depends on the role though - if there are way more male candidates than female, then statistically you're more likely to hire a male anyway.

You can't simple just say you want a 50:50 split or to hire more <whatever> as the talent pool just isn't there for many roles.
Obviously only from my own experience, but when I was doing my degree (Engineering) there were 3 females in a class around 30 and based on what I've seen in the workforce, that wasn't an anomaly. I doubt the university was turning away female applicants because they were female.

I work for a small company - only 10 technical staff - and they are all white males. We may not have a "diverse" workforce in the sense of the article, but between us we have a diverse range of skills and personalities - it's not as if white males are all carbon copies of each other. The last time we recruited for an engineer there was a single female applicant. She didn't get the job - not because she was female, but because she didn't have as much experience as the guy that did get the job.

Re: Japanese Charts: Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes Go Top In Tremendous Opening Weekend

dmcc0

@MajorTom It only got added last week and is called San Andreas - The Definitive Edition so it seems to be the same version. I still don't think there are too many people buying games that they know have issues, they'll mostly be pre-orders or people that aren't aware of the issues yet - not everyone is checking out reviews before they buy stuff. Also metacritic is hardly an accurate representation of how good or bad a game is really - "the internet" are a fickle bunch and it's just too easy for someone to rate something 0/10 for any reason.

Re: Japanese Charts: Pokémon Diamond And Pearl Remakes Go Top In Tremendous Opening Weekend

dmcc0

@MajorTom Yes, but my point was that the majority of Cyberpunk 2077 sales were from before people realised how bad it was, rather than people buying it despite it being terrible. From what I've seen of GTA it's nowhere near Cyberpunk levels of bad - folk on the forums here actually say it's pretty decent. Haven't played it myself yet, but San Andreas is on Game Pass I think so might check it out. I agree though, that if folk are buying stuff they know is a buggy mess than its pretty dumb. That's the chance you take when you preorder these days it seems.

Re: Random: Xbox's 20th Anniversary 'Metaverse' Acknowledges The Time It Tried To Acquire Nintendo

dmcc0

@WallyWest Careful, your fanboy is showing 😉 Neither Xbox or Sony has been pumping out that many real top-tier exclusives this year really - likely as a result of Covid, but in terms of actual numbers they are probably pretty similar. Next year looks like its going to be pretty full of exclusives from both consoles - and Nintendo too for that matter - it could be a very expensive year. Of course, it's all just a matter of opinion which has the better games - you have fanboys on all sides saying Xbox has no games, Nintendo is for kids, PlayStation only know how to do 3rd person action adventures etc, but as long as you're enjoying what you play who cares what the "other side" is doing?

Re: Japanese Charts: Shin Megami Tensei V Goes Straight To Number One

dmcc0

@Anti-Matter XBox Series Consoles are are doing much better than Xbox One did in Japan - I'm sure I read somewhere that they are likely to out-sell XB One lifetime sales by the end of this year. Likely still stock issues with PS consoles in the region too which would explain the lower than expected numbers.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Calls For Industry-Wide Support Of Game Preservation Via Emulation

dmcc0

@Oddball83 I don't particularly care if you're playing All Stars on your laptop either, but that's not really the point is it?

When they are talking about game preservation it's not about the likes of Sonic or Mario games that are already available just about everywhere and they want you to buy for the tenth time - it's about those games that didn't sell millions and are in many cases died with the platform they were released on. It would be great to go back and buy something that I might've missed because I either didn't have that particular system, it was just a game I wasn't aware of, or even just that my taste has changed over the years. At the moment you can't really do that unless they happen to release in a retro collection or stuff like the Arcade Archives games, but the selection on those is limited. The only other option is to either track down the original game and the hardware which can be very expensive, or emulate on PC etc.

I don't really get the argument that because something is old you shouldn't have to pay for it though - there would obviously be some cost involved with getting old games onto newer systems - developing the emulators, testing, licencing etc so expecting to get them for nothing is ridiculous.

Paying again for something you have already bought is different though, and I think Nintendo are the worst in that regard - way back to their early consoles/handhelds they've ported older games onto newer systems and it's been particularly bad with WiiU to Switch in that pretty much every decent 1st party game has got a port. There's no reason my virtual console purchases from Wii, 3DS etc shouldn't be available across all my Nintendo devices - they can clearly do 8bit/16bit console emulation just fine on Switch. Maybe a bit trickier with digital Wii/WiiU/3DS purchases due to the Switch having a different architecture, but for older games at least there should be no issue.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Calls For Industry-Wide Support Of Game Preservation Via Emulation

dmcc0

@Oddball83 The individuals that worked on these games don't see a dime from your ROM collections either so not really sure what your point is here. At least if these old games are sold officially the creators (or publishers at least) will get something.

I doubt the likes of Xbox or any other storefront see massive profits in this - I mean, Nintendo wouldn't have dumped the Virtual Console if it was making them piles of cash would they?

Re: Nintendo Is Offering Free Trials For Switch Online, Even If You've Used One Before (US)

dmcc0

@Mr_Fox Well it's obviously not that easy given some of the opinions about the (lack of) quality in the N64 emulation. Also licencing these old games can be a bit of a nightmare too. I think people forget that it's not just a case of dumping a load of old ROMs on the service and it just works, especially when it's a paid service - folk are going to be a lot less forgiving than they would be compared to something like a Pi or hacked mini-console with ROMs obtained from some shady website.

Re: Random: Brie Larson's Back In A New Metroid Dread Instagram Ad

dmcc0

@Chocobo_Shepherd But she didn't ask that question unprompted - it was off the back of already being branded a "white male hater" by some just because they took a quote out if context and tried to turn it into something it wasn't and then it snowballs from there and suddenly everything she says is somehow proof that she's some man-hating bigot. It's such a ridiculous thing to be accused of that it deserved the trolling response. At the time of the comments white male privilege was a hot topic, especially around Hollywood and I guess as a successful young female actor she felt like she needed to speak out against it. I'm not sure exactly why she felt the need to speak out about A Wrinkle in Time specifically - as far as I can tell she had nothing to do with the movie so seems like nothing more than virtue signalling. As for equality, I'm sure the same comments coming from one of the black female cast members or the director wouldn't have had them branded as bigots and they'd be praised for championing diversity.
Funny you should mention Chris Pratt - wasn't there some corner of the internet trying to cancel him due to a church he was involved with that was supposedly anti LGBT?

Re: Random: Brie Larson's Back In A New Metroid Dread Instagram Ad

dmcc0

@Chocobo_Shepherd I haven't seen it, but was she even in the movie? A bit pointless trying to distract from poor reviews if it's not even one of hers. If you genuinely think she hates white guys then I really don't know what to say. People on the internet are indeed dumb 🤦‍♂️

Re: Random: Brie Larson's Back In A New Metroid Dread Instagram Ad

dmcc0

@Chocobo_Shepherd The whole Wrinkle in Time thing was a rather heavy-handed dig at the lack of diversity within movie journalism/reviewing after it's less-than-great reviews. Not quoting word-for-word, but she said she wanted to know what women of colour thought about it rather that some 40 year old white dude as it wasn't really made for him. The internet read "it wasn't made for 40yo white dude" and translated it to "she hates white men".

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Now Sold 92.87 Million Units, And It's Catching The Wii

dmcc0

@SwitchForce you could argue that the Switch saw a massive boost in sales last year due to the various lockdowns going on around the world, so I don't think the total number would've been that different without Covid. The smaller sales this year due to shortages likely just cancel out the extra sales generated last year while everyone was stuck at home playing

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Now Sold 92.87 Million Units, And It's Catching The Wii

dmcc0

That software sales figure seems off - average of approx. 7 games per Switch seems really low. Would be interesting to see a breakdown of those figures. I've probably bought that in the last few weeks, never mind the lifetime of my Switch.

I realise I'm probably not the average buyer - and likely most on here aren't either - but that means there must be some that are only buying maybe 1 or 2 games. I guess the % buying loads of games is likely small enough that it doesn't skew the average too much maybe?

Re: Switch Hacking Group Leader Gary Bowser Agrees To Pay Nintendo $4.5 Million

dmcc0

@BloodNinja I don't recall reading that they proved the costs, just that the Bowser fellow didn't dispute them - there's a big difference. I don't doubt they try to estimate them, but my point is there's no (accurate) way to do that.
They'd probably try to argue that for each device sold the user would download X amount of ROMs on average thus losses = Devices Sold * X * $50. The notion that each ROM downloaded is a lost sale is nonsense though, especially for legacy systems where you can't actually buy the games anymore.

Re: Switch Hacking Group Leader Gary Bowser Agrees To Pay Nintendo $4.5 Million

dmcc0

I wonder how they calculated/estimated the loses? I guess it would be very difficult to put an exact figure on it as they've literally no idea what users are doing with these after they've bought them.

From the linked plea agreement is seems he only made around $320,000 in the years he was doing it and that included advertising income from the website. Doesn't really seem worth it when you get slapped with $4.5m in damages.

Re: Video: 15 Exciting New Games Coming To Nintendo Switch In November

dmcc0

@Flashlink99 I think they get a pass for NBA - isn't that full game over 32GB? They'd need a download even with the biggest cart so makes sense to use the cheaper one.

The people that actually care about this (or care enough to not buy the game at all) is probably a tiny minority anyway so I doubt they'll change if it's worked for them in the past.

Re: Capcom Says It's Unable To Add Cross-Save And Cross-Play To Monster Hunter Rise

dmcc0

@Aya-chan Well, the movie and music industries are always re-releasing anniversary/special editions of older stuff, and you have to buy it again if you want it on a newer format too, so no difference there really. They are companies trying to maximise profits after all - if you don't like it don't buy them.

The abuse accusations are not relevant to whether the customer base is being ripped off and it's by no means exclusive to the gaming industry - see Harvey Weinstein etc.

I'm not blindly believing what they say, but the default of many seems to be that every time a publisher says something they're lying. In this case there's no benefit to Capcom coming out and saying they can't do it - they'd actually be better of just saying nothing or giving some vague response about trying to add it later. I suspect they're going to lose a fair chunk of sales because of it.

You do realise playing other games with cross save doesn't necessarily mean that all games can do it?

Re: Capcom Says It's Unable To Add Cross-Save And Cross-Play To Monster Hunter Rise

dmcc0

I really need to stop reading the comments on this site. Seems like almost every article there's some armchair 'expert' calling out publishers for lying or being lazy or greedy.
They've made a statement that they can't do it - why not take that at face value?
I mean, if they were really trying to be greedy then surely they'd just say nothing in the hope people would buy the PC version assuming there'd be cross play/saves - or at least hoping it would be added later. If anything, not adding it is likely to lose them sales if people are not going to double-dip.

Re: Sensible Soccer's Spiritual Successor Signs For Nintendo Switch

dmcc0

Played Sensible World of Soccer to death on Amiga back in the day - Conquered Europe with lowly Livingstone in career mode if I remember correctly - with Zinedine Zidane bossing the midfield. Also still available on Xbox store for those that have access to it.

This game doesn't remind remind me of Sensible Soccer at all though - the camera angle on part that trailer actually remind me more of early FIFA games with the isometric view.

Re: The Hori Flex Assistive Controller For Switch Is Now Available In The US

dmcc0

@Stocksy What makes it worse in this case is that the controller is pretty basic electronics - just a regular controller with additional switch inputs. I get that it's not a mainstream product so economies of scale don't really apply, but it's still pretty shocking that the base unit cost nearly 3x as much as a set of Joycons.

Re: The Hori Flex Assistive Controller For Switch Is Now Available In The US

dmcc0

@BloodNinja I'm pretty sure the Microsoft Adaptive controller is around £150 (at least it was last time I looked) and it's the same - have to get all the accessories separately. Prefer the design of the MS one too - it looks a lot more stable than the Hori model and has a couple of oversized buttons as part of the unit.

Re: The Hori Flex Assistive Controller For Switch Is Now Available In The US

dmcc0

@Stocksy I have to disagree about the price. It's £175+ for the base unit only. Those joysticks in the video thumbnail? £210 each and those big buttons are £30 each too. Hardly affordable

I've got 2 disabled kids and in my experience having the world 'accessible' in the description usually means adding an extra zero or 2 to the cost.
