there is something nice about drip feed content though: as in gardening it waters the soul nicely, and on a regular basis if i might add. some of us appreciate that.
see now, what's not being talked about is that when NX comes out, all us wii u owners will be a leg up in the converts that waited for a better system... not only will we have adapted to the new superior controls, but we'll also have two gamepads! mwahaha
nintendo is in the business of socially engineering their communities. i'm interested in seeing how this affects the density, depth, and complexity of the environment they're shaping... it's clear that there's little chance of it mimicking other communities we've seen, and that's interesting. i fear it will feel sterile, but only time can soothe over those fears, and they're not exactly significant misgivings.
i want vr. the tech is all in the wii u, the integrated peripherals are mature, the industry would be excited, and i would be vindicated as a nintendo fanboy.
um power can also be regarding consumption... nintendo has prided itself on having the lowest power consuming consoles in the market. the Wii U is vastly more "capable" than the Wii but it consumes less "power" while being so.
chum's in the water, so the sharks gonna circle... don't forget that
look, i too was disappointed with the digital event, but e3's not over, and i think nintendo's shown they're not always about playing their cards up front... i think i'm gonna reserve judgement on the outcome of e3 until i see what they've fully got in store for us.
but honestly, with this metroid game and a co-operative multiplayer zelda, it's the first time i can start talking about getting a 2ds and a new nintendo 3ds with the wife for the whole family, and simply put that's all i really want: good arguments to set up great experiences...
in fact, and come to think of it, i wonder if nintendo realizes that what they tend to do is undercut us as a fanbase with their decisions... i'm not sure they realize that we're trying to engage with our friends and family (who own ps4s and xb1s). frankly, it's not unreasonable to imagine that that 31yo guy who raged has probably been talking nintendo up for a long time, just hoping to be proven right so he can look to his friends and experience just a little of the thrill that they get on him constantly.
i believe it's truth that we nintendo fans live in a world where beauty ain't just skin deep, and it gets really tough to defend and justify what you see in ninty's world when it takes a lot longer to explain what that really is to your community (especially through the preconceived notions of "kiddy" and "safety scissors" you constantly have to fend off).
look, the only thing those other guys have to do is point at a screen and say "see?", whereas we nintendofolk have to actually engage in dialog about the FACT that our system is not to be discarded. that's not easy over time, and i'm starting to honestly wonder whether nintendo gets that aspect of this real world "game" we play.
but i still trust they will, so long as we all lebd our voice to a teasonable and rational choir. i absolutely believe they truly respect cooler heads.
@Ralek85 i respectfully beg to differ: the motion controls are a huge component to what makes Splatoon amazing. a fundamental fact is that thumbsticks only benefit those who are experienced with them, whereas splatoon's motion controls are so intuitive that my wife was matching my abilities with thumbsticks in less than half hour of picking the game up (prediction, tactics, and strategy notwithstanding) and she's strictly been a zelda gamer. if she can improve that quickly (a feat simply not possible for anyone brand new to thumbsticks), then imagine future hardcore gamers just now learning them as their foundational control scheme... they'll be far above the avg 'sticker in no time flat.
now, what truly makes it big though is that it's a control scheme not just limited to splatoon nor the gamepad, and that's what's revolutionary (imo) about the game: it has the potential to set precendent well beyond itself.
@Blastcorp64 there's a method to make it work. in fact, the splat charger will quickly out ink a roller. try it for yourself: shoot your charge, then sidestep and shoot again so you get two lines lookin' like one. rinse and repeat. i've found the splat charger doles out ink just as fast as any other weapon, and in some cases even faster.
@TonLoco one of the great things about the game is that if you're finding yourself out leagued in turf war you have a ton of options:
1) ink an unoccupied area 2) practice your stability in single player 3) enhance and hone your abilities in the challenges 4) try a different weapon 5) practice with a friend on battle dojo
you won't get smoked if you try different things. you'll have fun!!
once a zone is occupied, spend time inking your escape route... you have time once the opposing team begins to control it, so spend your time gathering your focus (every micro-second seems to count in this game), getting your vantage, and laying ink for mobility.
@Sakura thing is, without the "paywall" you wouldn't get the content... it's not like they could just add it for free.
it takes time to generate the content and they have to be willing pay people to do so. that's only a possibility if they ask for more money, and it seems by the reaction that amiibo is a great way to do that... it gives a physical component to a mostly digital product.
splatzone strategy tip: always have ink behind you. it enables movement, supports hit and run tactics, and benefits your whole team. so once you get the Zone, ink-up around you to support efficient mobility for you and your team around you.
i loved it. perfect contrast and really gets your skin in the game. it was a mini thrill to breach C rank, and makes me really eant to hold onto it.
i always felt like instead of my team losing, it was a hard fought and well earned win by the other.
one thing not mentioned is the overtime mechanic. even if your team is in the lead, if your not in control of the zone when the time runs out, you haven't won yet. lost a twenty py lead because the other team rallied and we couldn't wrest to zone away from then. quite a memorable experience! i love it!!
as for the coverage question, something the keep in mind: even ramps have a horizontal component to them when viewed from the top down... get at least everything not vertical and you'll be effective.
movie gimmick: looming over the entire plot, executives in sony, microsoft, ubisoft and other major games industry players (plus maybe reggie himself) all deal in shady alleys with brittish mafioso
i'm glad the overwhelming majority of opinion on this is supportive of this issue as a testing one... i was afraid it was all going to be doom and gloom.
Another point to bolster the idea that NOA's not competent. They definitely don't jive with the Japanese headquarter's values...
Unfortunately Japanese culture has a tough time recognizing what a "genuine" individual in America looks like... And their culture is based on recognizing the genuine character of a person through the professional presentation of that person's self.
Honestly, I'm thinking Reggie's mannerisms and professionalism impressed them directly, but they don't realize that he's not really in touch with the community and he's not nearly as competent as he portrays himself...
It's probably just that NOA's sold out, and the folks in Kyoto haven't yet realized it.
Motions controls will immediately benefit two groups of players: new ones that haven't had years of habit engrained to the contrary, and adaptable ones that chose to work with them in the Wii era.
For those not immediately benefited, I'd advise thinking about where you think the genre is headed... Perhaps you'll want to keep in mind this one thing: the way motion has been adopted in Splatoon, it has literally added one more layer of articulation to the shooter genre.
Articulation. Like the opposable nature of our thumbs.
@Nictendo64 point in case... Rather than "wrecking" for a while to get comfortable with a potentially superior control scheme, you'd have preferred the designers tailor the game to meet your existing competencies.
In almost every group of people there exists those resistant to change alongside those that embrace it.
Many gamers accept the need to adapt; it's part of accepting that games will eventually run out their lifetimes and force the gamer to adjust to a new online environment.
For those that don't, they're typically apprehensive solely because they've come to rely on their competencies as a core component of their identity... To risk adjusting to new control schemes (in particular) is to risk losing one's sense of competencies, and therefor to face the limits of one's value.
To me: disgusting and inappropriate. That joke is rooted in blending the worlds of kids and sex, and--as I see it--suggests the developers of this title will be (subconsciously, subtly, or otherwise) negatively influencing children.
As far as I'm concerned, they have no business creating a marketed-for-kids animated feature, and I will not be buying this game.
I think the result of the polls highlight a lot of things, not the least of which that yes: of course we all want more sessions, but frankly we'd be spoiled to think we're owed it.
I can't help but lump the naysayers in the same category as those kids in school who missed that one awesome episode where that thing happened that was soo amazing!!!
Meanwhile, for those able to attend: we gotta count ourselves almost as lucky as those who got to play for five minutes at E3.
Booyah baby, we just got free time that not everybody's gonna get!!!!

I give massive credit to Nintendo (in Japan) for the amazing feats of wonder they achieve; Miyamoto-san is an emissary of gaming divinity to me. I do honestly though, and have for some time now, question the motivations of Nintendo of America.
Whether it's down to the suspiciously inauthentic guerrilla marketing campaign of Reggie Fils-Aime as some sort of a tour de force in gaming culture, or the recent product release decisions which hardly stand up to journalistic scrutiny, I can't seem to get past the notion that they're not just courting younger audiences, but they're also either negligently or deliberately excising mature audiences from their consumer base.
Call me a conspiracy theorist (I don't really feel that I am), but this latest cog in NOA's marketing machine is not only shallow and narrowly targeted, but it actually undermines the delicate balance between technical complexity, family integration, and accessible entertainment achieved by this (according to all accounts) well developed title. It's borderline sabotage if you ask me.
So, as a protective parent: if this was the first introduction I had to Splatoon, I would pass the title over for my children. It frames the game as having no depth, a lack of virtuosity, and an abundance of youth-targeted psychological techniques intended to manipulate my children.
And as a shareholder, I find myself further disgusted by the executive decisions emanating from NOA. I would be right-happy to see Nintendo excise NOA's executives rather than than the alternative (which is apparently NOA attempting to excise me and my entire generation from relevance).
I'm sorry. My sincerest apologies for the aggressive rhetoric, but I've been biting my tongue for some time now, and have found myself quite finally fed up with this latest foray into... Well... Whatever this "thing" appears to be.
