Re: Analysts Doubt 'Switch 2' Will Be Able To Top Switch's Mighty Sales Numbers

Yeah, I think it'll drop initially from profit seeking, but then continue to climb. look at the pattern... prior to the modern era, Nintendo's stock price was overdependent on its console sales. now that it's diversified so heavily (movies and theme parks, hybrid development) it's stock pattern has nothing to do with its game releases and very little to do with its hardware sales. we're in uncharted territory, but this Bloomberg analyst seems to focus only on the hardware.

there are still stock traders who are just using the climbs to occassionally sell-off, then buy again when it's a little low but trending up. but i think what you see is that nintendo's baseline value (noise floor) is increasing from people who are investing because they truly love the direction the company is going. that's new.

And it makes sense. Those of us raised on/by nintendo since the 80's have more liquid cash than ever, and it's only continuing to grow

I told many family, friends and colleagues about this… but I take it one step further. I do not think that Nintendo is an entertainment company or a video company or a toy company or hardware company or an IP company or an event company or a theme park company...

They do all of those equally well, but when it boils down, Nintendo is a design company through-and-through. They just happen to do their design work in entertainment.

Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Franchise Should Illumination Tackle Next?

day

How about this: I'd give Illumination "Game and Watch" (wario/waluigi). Something with farts, snotty excess, recklessness, etc. Then it'll be easier for parents to protect their kids from predation... They go in already having decided they don't care how their children make decisions.

And I gaurantee you Illumination would make profits that truly represents their real fanbase (instead of just tagging along with Nintendo's).

Re: Talking Point: Which Nintendo Franchise Should Illumination Tackle Next?

day

None. I feel like I'm a ranting "video games will rot your mind" religious zealot, but I swear that I am not! Frankly though, I abhor how irresponsible Illumination is with the minds of our children.

They need to either reform their practices of exposing little kids to suicidal ideation, traumatic brutality, dark and forcing terror, villian envy, and hero depleteism, or Nintendo needs to find a different partner.

They may have made money, and nobody can argue against the production quality, but this movie would have been better in more loving hands. Storytelling is one of the most impactful and ancient technologies humanity has ever invented, but Illumination drags it over a washboard while wringing from it every last penny.

Re: Splatoon 2 Is Getting Another Game Update Next Week

day

@Spiders thank you. i agree, and feel that both are true. Yes we can struggle to focus on the right thing, and yes the responsibility is on Nintendo to develop a matching system that doesn't oscillate manically.

Do you get the sense that the former gets more attention than the latter? I feel like as a nintendo fan (my in-game is Ninten-jin after all, as in "a person of Nintendo"), there's less focus in the idea that the company has a responsibility to deliberately address an abusive cycle in their programming, than on the need for people to address their own state of mind... I've heard/read nobody speak to that.

Re: Splatoon 2 Is Getting Another Game Update Next Week

day

I've been playing splatoon since day one of the IP's release. It's a fact that the game mechanics and the concept are truly exceptional. There is no other FPS that combines the logistics of battlespace agility with the economics of "adversary-and objectives-management". I play the game because of the rapid cognition decision making I'm forced to exercise.

I truly LOVE it.

There is also one other fact. It's matchmaking is exceptionally flawed. It takes a serious psychological toll on folks who try hard to enjoy the competition; it's deeply manic to go from winning-streaks to losing-streaks through no tangible fault of your own. I regularly oscillate between s+ and s+3 in every ranked mode, and the fact is that progression is based on the chance that several of your "intended to lose teams" (a deeply troubling thought in its own right) happen to manage their wins when the deck is deliberately stacked against them.

It's an extremely unhealthy pattern.

For those struggling from depression, and yet who have been primed to look for the positive rush that comes from the artificial winning-streak phase of their sessions, the losing-streaks risk overriding their self-regulation centers and driving them to rage, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. I guarantee you there are folks who read this that know exactly what I mean.

Anyway. Splatoon is truly amazing. It's matchmaking is also very harmful and contributes to deep psychological trauma.

Re: Pre-Orders For The Labo VR Kit Are Now Live On The Nintendo UK Store

day

@Wavey84 something to consider: if you haven't tried a control system on a VR headset, and you haven't gone for some amount of time holding headsets (rather than having them strapped on), you probably don't have an accurate idea of how well it works as a system. I hope I can help you imagine it...

The first Google cardboard I designed had thumb holes. I used that set for weeks and even though the thumbs caused a slight distortion in the 3d viewing and it let a ton of light leakage into the headset, it was awesome. Think of it as feeling sporty.

Holding your headset for short periods (like Splatoon style matches) was totally natural. Boxers hold their hands to their face all the time. Photographers too. Martial artists, and plenty others really.

But all I really wanted on my headset was a physical control. Buttons.. more of them. Real ones... and my thumbs had to get out of the image... honestly, VR Labo is for me a dream come true. Not as a final product, but as a step towards an unmatched product...

Just think... the Wii integrated motion controls 3 generations ago. the Wii U perfected wireless HD streaming... the 3DS fostered multiple generations of 3d developers. And if they could scrounge up the power (which isn't really a challenge, is just that Nintendo hasn't wanted to), they've even worked in a public test of asynchronous gameplay so one person could be in VR and the other on the TV... tack on the fact that a headset is a much easier sell than a second screen, then you might just realize that Nintendo has been publicly beta testing individual components of an exciting deviation from the traditional VR system.

I've come to realize that Nintendo isn't really a tech company... it's a design company. And what it does better than any company out there is strategically design its systems for the future, testing and iterating. When they have money, they're not afraid to go out on a limb and lose a little cash for the opportunity to learn. What's more, they curate the market place and prepare their systems in parallel. Unprecedented.

VR Labo is just another sign of their brilliance. Don't let a lack of imagination dull their blade for you.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value Continues Its Painful Slide After Reports Predicting Upcoming Financial Loss

day

I'll tell you what: a lot of folks (and certainly investors) see Nintendo's reversion back to single screen gaming, and a further commitment to low-end processing, as a sign that Nintendo has exited the console market. Nintendo has withdrawn from the race.

look, just because my camera can play videos through the tv does not mean it's an entertainment system.

and so: THIS IS NOT A CONSOLE in it's current form. it's not even a hybrid. it's a handheld that connects to the tv. that's all.

Re: Nintendo Share Price Drops Over 8% as Analysts Weigh in On NX and Mobile Plans

day

@TheRealThanos I think it's a little less black and white than that. yes, i mostly mean VR, but when i look at what Sony provides their customers, i see that at least they're being responsive.

now, unfortunately their fanbase isn't as refined as the Nintendo fanbase, my opinion, but at least they're getting what they asked for... With Nintendo, I'm starting to wonder if i'm getting the same... maybe my demands are too high, but i'm having trouble seeing them as though they are.

Re: Nintendo Share Price Drops Over 8% as Analysts Weigh in On NX and Mobile Plans

day

@Xenocity Were we given a reason for the launch window? i didn't think we were...

But still, launching after the holidays is a tough sell... Families have just kicked out a bunch of cash, so they're not likely to be in the mood for more significant purchases.

furthermore, if nintendo doesn't give me enough juicy detail to encourage me to hold out for a NX (...assuming it's a strong enough console to have a good reason...), i'll seriously be considering jumping in the Sony VR bandwagon, and waiting until next christmas for NX when i'm certain the library will be more fleshed out (past launches ain't giving me the warm fuzzies)... and that hurts to say... i haven't gone Sony since PS 2, and even that was secondhand

Re: Soapbox: A Nintendo Fan's Hopes and Dreams for the NX

day

i appreciate the perspective of the article, and feel it was well written and properly disclaimered.

i cannot, however, disagree with the motion controller viewpoint more vigorously. there is a constant struggle between the "motion control" and the "simplistic control" camps, and to further one side over the other is divisive and self centered. the fact is that developing multiple control schemes for a game in today's world is simple, and the tech is cheap; both should be offerd in every game where practical.

i recognize the main idea of that section was that there are too many controller types for people to juggle (i disagree btw) but the fact is that every motion enabled controller since the wii mote has given developers the flexibility to throw motion controls out the windows if they so desire. sure, consolidate the form of the controllers to support both camps moreso than the wiimote did, but please don't suggest it's alright to consolidate my interests out of existence.

i for one feel that motion controls have been an effective evolution of an outdated and antiquated setup (masterfully executed for once in splatoon); a setup that the weak-willed have grown accustomed to, and vigorously fight against changing. but i can at least set my opinion aside enough to say "continue to support both in a robust way" by fostering the growth of those who want their interfaces to evolve, and give those who wish to stagnate the opportunity to feel enjoyably contented.

Re: Editorial: Let's Make 2016 a Year of Nintendo Optimism

day

i'm still hugely optimistic. The signs, as i read them, suggest there's a very good chance that Ninjendo's got something up their sleeve. regardless, 2015 still left an indelible mark on the relationship between my son and i, and they didn't act stupidly gung-ho after iwata-san's death, so they still got my respect. if they again meet that standard, i'll continue to be optimistic about their future plans.

besides, they're meeting my nearly decades long request this year: we're getting a serious and innovative successor to star fox. and pokken tournament has serious edge to it. they've a stated recognition to better utilize amiibo.

they're on the right track. i'm sure of that as best one can be.

Re: Analysis: Assessing Why NX Needs to Take Over From Both the Wii U and 3DS

day

@ThomasBW84 thanks for the coverage; those nauseated by the content need to get over their compulsion to read nauseating things.

the fact is that to me, as an investor and a gamer, it's interesting to get facts from those more tapped in than I in either realm. that's one of the reasons why i pay attention to the news.

i'm glad this organization is about the big picture; it's exactly what'll keep me coming back.

Re: Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima Has Published a New Message for Shareholders and Investors

day

@Xenocity dude, you're trying to say that one market focused article a month is too much for gamers? like they can't collectively see the value of "such nonsense" and that there will be some serious sort of a backlash? relax man, the site won't go belly up by focusing 1-5% of it's effort on stocks lol

and besides, as NintendoLife says about themselves: "The Nintendo Life team is dedicated to bringing you the biggest news and trustworthy reviews from the wide world of Nintendo."

"biggest news [...] from the wide world of Nintendo"... It's not just about games dude, it's about Nintendo. so unless you're one of those narrow-minded market-phobic gamers that abhors the investors out there because there's some silly image in their head of a squirrelly bald guy with glasses in a corner cubicle futzing around with "their games", then I don't see why you're so much against whole-picture journalism... and if you are one of those gamers, then... i dunno dude, i still don't see why the contrarian backlash...

Re: Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima Has Published a New Message for Shareholders and Investors

day

@Xenocity no offense, but whether or not it's intentional, you're sidestepping my point... there should be more coverage of Nintendo's stock market story surrounding this drop.

seriously, much more coverage has been given of much fewer gains and losses.

and look, i appreciate the attempt at the lesson, but frankly i'm not ignorant to the vagueries of the market. it goes up, it goes down, it's temporary yadda yadda.

it's still an indicator. period.

Re: Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima Has Published a New Message for Shareholders and Investors

day

oddly enough, we're in the middle of what is, by far, the worst share value decline in four years, and though that's the case, the bigger news is that the Nintendo journalism community isn't reporting it; there's even pushback against suggestions to do so...

I personally feel that the lack of a significant response from Nintendo (to the decline) suggests they're alright with this, and it's exactly that which buoys my optimism. there's an almost ninja like stoicism to their lack of panic... i believe it bodes well for 2016.

but this lack of reporting has me worried... why are we gamers being treated with less than the facts?
