I got the tees anyway, the unlockable game gear was never a factor in that purchase.
But wow, this is horrible. Like, the uproar if this were a company like EA would be massive. I hope Nintendo of Europe realizes that this kind of behaviour will not be appreciated by fans.
Especially when it's so easy to compare regions these days. There's no reason for this inequality. No reason at all.
For starters, why base it on beliefs when they could be sending out questionnaires to customers and getting feedback off social media?
Secondly, surely outsourcing should be more than a mere possibility? Yes, of course...that's pretty expensive, but the Switch recently surpassed PS4 lifetime sales in Japan, and racking up a big install base everywhere else too. It could indeed be very worthwhile...
Assuming the omamori theory to be correct, this does...touch upon the stubbornness and single-mindedness of some Japanese developers. Yes it was discovered, yes, maybe it wasn't meant to be discovered, but could you not have seen the number of people who were so happy to have something like that in the system? If it was a discovery that made many fans really happy, isn't that not a way of keeping Iwata's influence alive? But since it's not according to the plan and tradition, it's automatically seen as bad and axed. A shame...
Anyway, when people say they expect World to sell well, I really wonder what kind of total sales number they expect. Like...3 million? 4 million?
Because surely the West needs to make up for a MASSIVE loss of sales from its home region (lack of portability easily wiping away millions of sales in Japan)
And even if, say...it hits 4 million or so in sales. Isn't that how much 4/4U made in Japan alone, on a device that takes a fraction of the costs to develop for?
It's hard to see how this is a good move for Capcom. I know I'm probably very biased, but...I just can't see them raking in the profits they're used to with this series.
As gaming journalists, I hope the staff at nintendolife consider asking Platinum directly as to why only Japan is getting both versions physical, and Europe a horrible hybrid of both physical and digital.
And while we're at it, maybe check if the Japanese version has multi-language and/or subtitles?
As a final note, please continue to make your voices heard, those who dislike this double standard between regions. That Japan always gets the better deal shouldn't be something we just keep taking for granted and giving them a free pass for.
@MarcelRguez You certainly aren't the only one asking it, judging by 400+ likes on comments in favour of dual audio on some of the trailer videos.
It does feel like a must this time, but as always, with Nintendo it's an uphill struggle to get them to understand fan demands. Dual audio should really be a standard in this day and age.
It's the same lose-lose situation we had on Wii U: Buy our butchered ports or we'll ditch support. But let's say you do support it. Wouldn't that send the message that cut features and whatnot are fine? So future "support" will also be downgraded games compared to other versions, no?
It didn't work on Wii U, I doubt it'll work on the Switch. If you want to attract the audience, I'd say parity is a must.
@Yoshis95 I know, don't worry. If you think you're being pessimistic, well....let's just say it's very possible I'm being overly optimistic and naive over here. And I really shouldn't, given Ninty's track record. But yeah, I'm tempted to pick up the Switch whilst in Japan (considerably cheaper there), and any flip-flopping with region-free will really mess me up to say the least.
@Yoshis95 That would be one of the biggest slaps to fans and I think even Nintendo realize the danger of creating so much anger and frustration with that kind of move....I...think
But no, if I'm pretty sure with this one it's a given. Maybe one or two extreme cases like Persona on the PS3, but nothing more than that
@Siskan High five! I just wish more people would do that. I mean, I probably should've worded it a bit better. I don't really mind the fact that petitions exist, just that people use that and stop there, when they can do so much more than that.
@Robsnoow Fine, if you want to nitpick, comparing consoles. If anything, using your argument, you can use the 3DS as a point to show that they actually regressed.
If you want change, petitions are NOT the way to go. I mean I've signed it for some reason but... ....petitions give the illusion that you're making a difference in just a few seconds. You know what can. Write-in campaigns. Sending NoA, NoE and NoJ emails and letters telling them why you want these changes. But of course that will break the illusion that you can push change in a few seconds, and it takes actual effort, so this will conveniently be ignored.
Nintendo still doesn't seem to grasp the idea that options are good. I mean, they've taken some steps....baby steps....with Region Free (an important step, but over 10 years behind the competition) To be fair, it's not just Nintendo that does this, Final Fantasy X on the PC (without mods) has something similar I believe. Regardless, I simply cannot understand why you'd refuse to implement the ability to mix and match when it would be so easy, especially for a company like Nintendo....sigh...
If we're taking Mass Effect as the indicator of how 3rd parties sell on Nintendo consoles, then that's our problem.
I'm not even debating the fact that 3rd parties will look at something like that and make decisions based off it, but it's an incredibly flawed way to look at it no matter how you slice it, and an indicator on how out of touch the gaming industry can be.
Nintendo fans were basically put in a position to lap up a one-off game whilst every other console got the trilogy.
Not to mention the other chopped-up ports the Wii U got.
So basically Nintendo fans were put in a no-win situation of either validating the existence of these butchered ports through sales, or losing 3rd party support altogether. And they went with the latter. Which, if you ask me, was the better option. We as gamers, mostly through sales, have validated far too many greed-fueled gaming industry decisions in the last couple of generations.
What gave you the impression that I'm trying to defend anything or that I'm calling your points invalid? We're just discussing things here....for the record, I think you're making some valid points, but I don't necessarily agree with them.
You may bring up Occam's Razor to support your argument, but the fact of the matter is that both scenarios are indeed possible, and in real life, it's not necessarily what one thinks is the likely option that is always true.
You also attempt to word it in a way that makes the first scenario appear extremely unlikely, and then word the second one in a simple, clear-cut way to make it appear more likely, but of course fail to take into consideration other things.....ex. it's one thing, PR wise, to take down a fan game, another thing to go after a journalist with lawyers.
Oh I have no doubt in my mind that the person passing on the info is being unethical. But absolving the "messenger" of all guilt under the grounds of "she's just doing her job" is far too simplistic. You're also making a big assumption by saying there are no grounds to sue at all unless you somehow have in your possession all the relevant documents. They may or may not. We don't know and we likely never will.
I've already mentioned the fact that joke or not, the whole BLACKLISTED, PLEASE DONATE thing was unethical, for starters. Next up, yes revealing an indie game to that extent can definitely be deemed unethical without the permission of the devs themselves. A surprise reveal was foiled, hype won't be the same which may in turn affect sales. Now if journalists want to hide under the "not my responsibility" shield, fine. But go ahead and damage the industry that feeds you for a few clicks. As for being sued, it's not as simple as that. I don't know if Nintendo has grounds to sue, but even if they do, chances are they won't. For a very simple reason - suing a journalist as a multinational company looks really bad, even if they have a legitimate case. Which is why companies have resorted to simply blacklisting journalists and/or sites before.
I have to ask, how do you know for sure that she didn't sign any agreement? Unless she said something I may have missed? Journalists do at times sign agreements not to disclose certain info before a stipulated time, a very common example of this being reviews Now if a source did so and gave her permission to leak it, then fair play to her, although the whole revenge thing, joke or not, reeks of an unprofessional attitude in the extreme, again....something that is not new to the likes of her, unfortunately. But hey, I guess if that's the way journalism works nowadays, I'm glad I stopped looking at games journalism as an ideal job a loooong time ago. "Hey I leaked a trailer for an indie game on a new system and stole their future moment in the limelight....don't care I GOT CLICKS" sigh
With some of the sites in her bio being soooo well-known for ethical journalism, I find it hard to believe that the 'revenge' part is in jest. And no, you don't necessarily leak info you get a hold of as a journalist. It really depends on your sources, for starters. How was this info obtained? Are NDAs being broken? I don't have an answer to these questions and quite frankly it's not my business, but let's not pretend that these people leaking the info are saints in need of mercy, or that they have some kind of spotless ethical track record. Far from it.
Revenge leak, then ask for donations....the epitome of ethical games journalism in modern times A shame really, cause these would've been nice surprises had Nintendo been allowed to reveal them when they intended. Oh well...
Do any of you guys realize how many "politically incorrect", if you will, titles (and well-known ones) exist on other platforms, with near full blown sex scenes, gore, etc. Pump the brakes. An uncensored TMS in the West would've sent any self respecting parent rushing away from the demonic Wii U towards the safe space haven of the PS4, with its family friendly fun provided by Witcher 3 and Sony's own God of War, among others. I mean people are bringing up Tomodachi Life. Fair enough. I'm sure the company wasn't happy about that and I do remember the ridiculous headlines. Fast forward a bit and you've got Tomodachi Life establishing itself in the West and the handheld it's on hitting 60 million units sold. So what did those SJW clickbait headlines and tears achieve? A fat load of good, that's what they got out of all that. I think people here, and by the looks of things, the guys at Nintendo too, fear the SJW/concerned parent influence just a tad too much. And in the latter's case, by doing so, alienating a part of their core fanbase. A darn shame....but anyway, that's my 2c.
sigh...a 'better than nothing' mentality is something you'd expect from the Mighty No.9 guys painful memories of donating to that kickstarter and still not receiving the "game"
....but when it's coming from Nintendo (well, the Western branches anyway) and its fans...it stings, not gonna lie.
Initially? I'm pretty sure the enforced censorship is still a sort of disappointment, and they're trying to find the silver lining, possibly to push the product.
Also, the "at least we're getting the product" is a very unhealthy attitude to have. I mean, rather than companies saying:
"This game is niche, how can we make it appeal more to people"
...no instead, we have people, and possibly the companies themselves, thinking along the lines of:
"...the important thing is that game is coming to the West, that means censorship has to be stomached" (under the threat of similar games not being "localized" next time)
Definition of entitlement - expecting the same content as gamers in Japan when you're paying the same price for a game arriving months late. Glad we cleared that up...
Great, this semantics argument again
Choose one:
I believe what the Treehouse is doing is right - call it 'localization'
I believe what the Treehouse is doing is wrong - call it 'censorship'
Now repeat after me:
My definition is the right definition!!
....and now that we've got that out of the way, I think if you look at it logically, looking at multiple definitions of these words, you'll realize that there is A LOT of overlap, making all of this a ridiculous, moot point, centred around the fact that censorship has a negative connotation, whereas localization has (had?) a positive one.
What we really should be looking at is why Nintendo isn't trying to cater more to a growing number of people who want to play a version of the game as close to what the original artist intended as possible.
Removing region lock is the first step. Perhaps it's also time to invest in an English language option on Japanese versions, that would be close to a 1-1 translation. And before anyone scoffs at that....some games already do that officially, and if fans can do it in their free time, I'm sure a company like Nintendo can as well.
Of course, the Treehouse can still exist so that they can make their changes to the Western versions and they can "adjust" those to fit their precious "cultural sensibilities" and whatnot...sigh...but people would at least have a viable import option if they don't want to see any of that.
tl;dr We should be discussing possible solutions, not words that can be interpreted in various ways.
And the title baits some of the same people who were all to happy to vent off against Miyamoto in that Goldeneye article, among other things.
Quite honestly, this personal crusade against this man, of all people, is distasteful to say the very least...and it's kinda sad to see NLife kinda promoting it due to it being a sure-fire way to get more clicks and comments
Gee guys, let's pressure Yacht Club into saying something that might get them in trouble with Nintendo. What an absolutely brilliant idea...for page views
Wait what? No online for Wii U?? Seriously?
EDIT: Other sources claim that online is there for the Wii U version. The way it is worded here may make one think that online is exclusive to the 3DS version only
@BLPs You could, but as I said, you will be spending more with the PS4 in the long run than with a budget gaming PC..
I used to be Nintendo + Sony, switched to Nintendo + PC because I could see the PS Plus thingy becoming mandatory from a mile off. And I don't want to pay to rent games and access online features, thank you very much
But yeah, your laptop can double up as a gaming PC if you want. Don't let a bunch of arrogant fools put you off from giving it a go, that's my suggestion
@CreativeWelshman I think the PC audience is too vast to be categorized like that (ex. plenty of people played Goat Simulator out of curiosity and for the lulz, not just to scream at a webcam), but I do see your point. It just gets a bit unfair if we ignore the considerable number of niches PC gaming can fill
@BLPs To be fair, unless you're obsessed with playing in 4K on multiple monitors or something of the sort, you don't need to spend crazy amounts of money on a gaming PC or even update it regularly.
There's a number of budget gaming PC builds that aren't a whole lot more expensive than the PS4 and X1. And the money you'll save from online fees and getting games from Humble Bundles/Steam Sales/etc. more than makes up for spending more. I could then go on about the freedom it gives you (with things like mods and multiple control schemes) and the fact that a good PC can be used for much more than gaming...
Regardless, if the people you know are getting expensive PCs just to feel superior or something, I can see why you'd have that impression. Just wanted to point out that there are valid reasons why people go for them that don't involve the whole master race arrogance thingy...
As for your other point about people needing to grow up (mentally) and just admit to liking a product. Spot on mate, but don't think this kind of sheep mentality is limited to the UK.... :/
@Ichiban I could bring up the poll on their own website, but you know what? Whether they would've bought this game or not is quite frankly irrelevant. A developer flat out lied and deceived potential customers and Kickstarter backers. This is the bottom line
Come on...I'm against piracy as much as the next guy, but I mean come on....can you legitimately re-read your comments and not realize you're being just a teensy weensy little bit extreme here?
@mjc0961 I agree with you on the pre-order culture being bad, but I feel you are kinda going against the wrong publisher. I have yet to be let down by any Nintendo game I've pre-ordered. Until that changes, I don't feel the need to change my pre-order habits when it comes to Nintendo games. I can't say the same thing for other publishers. Ultimately it has to come down to reputation as well. There's a difference between...for example, pre-ordering a Zelda game and pre-ordering something from EA or Ubisoft
@SirQuincealot...to be fair, you should avoid generalizations like that. There are a number of high quality third party games, even when compared to Nintendo games.
@bitleman asking quorthon to stop with his anti-nintendo tirade is a bit like asking some of the third parties he seems to adore to cut down on rip-off DLC. It's going to have exactly the same effect...or should I say non-effect.
That said, Monster Hunter is a very good example. It's a shame others will ignore it, or attempt to downplay it to push through their agendas
Nintendo cannot survive alone, no matter how deluded some fans become. Three generations of hardware, bordering on 4...indicate otherwise. Just who is really deluded here?
@ColdingLight Come on...the videogame industry isn't some lala land...in many cases, you have to choose between a game getting delayed or it being rushed. And guess what? People would be up in arms regardless of the outcome At least with the former, when the game comes out....it will have been polished

Let people enjoy things the way they want.
The only thing "ruining the fun" for mainland Chinese players here, as people here have suggested, is NOT the HK protest movement.
It is their own tyrannical, censorious communist party.

....and now that we've got that out of the way, I think if you look at it logically, looking at multiple definitions of these words, you'll realize that there is A LOT of overlap, making all of this a ridiculous, moot point, centred around the fact that censorship has a negative connotation, whereas localization has (had?) a positive one.
Re: Timing Of NX Launch Could Help Nintendo Grab Some Of Sony And Microsoft's Market Share, Says Analyst
Are we really going to resort to leaving Pachter's name out in the headlines, just so we end up clicking it anyway?
...sigh, should've known...
Re: Fresh Project H.A.M.M.E.R. Details Reveal Shigeru Miyamoto's Role In The Game's Downfall

Are you sure they've been removed from the European version?

Re: Apparent Confirmation Emerges of Shovel Knight for Super Smash Bros., Denied in Vain By Yacht Club Games
Gee guys, let's pressure Yacht Club into saying something that might get them in trouble with Nintendo.
What an absolutely brilliant idea...for page views
Re: Video: Terraria Shines on Wii U and 3DS
Wait what? No online for Wii U?? Seriously?
EDIT: Other sources claim that online is there for the Wii U version. The way it is worded here may make one think that online is exclusive to the 3DS version only
Re: Splatoon Grabs Second Place in UK Chart Début
@BLPs You could, but as I said, you will be spending more with the PS4 in the long run than with a budget gaming PC..
I used to be Nintendo + Sony, switched to Nintendo + PC because I could see the PS Plus thingy becoming mandatory from a mile off. And I don't want to pay to rent games and access online features, thank you very much
But yeah, your laptop can double up as a gaming PC if you want. Don't let a bunch of arrogant fools put you off from giving it a go, that's my suggestion
Re: Splatoon Grabs Second Place in UK Chart Début
@CreativeWelshman I think the PC audience is too vast to be categorized like that (ex. plenty of people played Goat Simulator out of curiosity and for the lulz, not just to scream at a webcam), but I do see your point.
It just gets a bit unfair if we ignore the considerable number of niches PC gaming can fill
Re: Splatoon Grabs Second Place in UK Chart Début
Re: Exclusive: Slightly Mad Studio Head Ian Bell Sets The Record Straight On Project CARS Wii U
@Ichiban I could bring up the poll on their own website, but you know what? Whether they would've bought this game or not is quite frankly irrelevant. A developer flat out lied and deceived potential customers and Kickstarter backers. This is the bottom line
Re: Dark Half Is A Twisted SNES JRPG From The Makers Of Wonder Boy, And It Now Has An English Translation
Come on...I'm against piracy as much as the next guy, but I mean come on....can you legitimately re-read your comments and not realize you're being just a teensy weensy little bit extreme here?
Re: Reaction: There is a Positive Angle to Nintendo's Splatoon Global Testfire Issues
@Alundra-1998
Yep, I know about it all too well. That and Alundra 2 in particular are part of my childhood
Re: Reaction: There is a Positive Angle to Nintendo's Splatoon Global Testfire Issues
@Alundra-1998
Yeah I do that as well...with Nintendo especially you get a lot of bundles and/or Collector's Editions so it's worthwhile
(I assume that username is a reference to the game, right? Respect )
Re: Reaction: There is a Positive Angle to Nintendo's Splatoon Global Testfire Issues
Re: Editorial: The eShop's Pricing Dilemma is the Fault of Many, But Damages Creativity and Risk Taking
@SirQuincealot...to be fair, you should avoid generalizations like that. There are a number of high quality third party games, even when compared to Nintendo games.
Re: Editorial: The eShop's Pricing Dilemma is the Fault of Many, But Damages Creativity and Risk Taking
Re: Fresh Legend of Kay Anniversary Screenshots Stalk Into View
Nintendo cannot survive alone, no matter how deluded some fans become.
Three generations of hardware, bordering on 4...indicate otherwise. Just who is really deluded here?
Re: Fresh Legend of Kay Anniversary Screenshots Stalk Into View
lol keep on dreaming about Nintendo going 3rd party just because Nintendo fans simply prefer 1st party games
Same old delusions from the same old guy
Re: Nintendo Begins Takedown Proceedings on Super Mario 64 HD Fan Project
Oh come on, because other publishers would not have done THE EXACT SAME THING. But only Nintendo is the mean, "out of touch" bully. Sure...
Re: The Legend of Zelda for Wii U No Longer Set for 2015 Release
@ColdingLight
Come on...the videogame industry isn't some lala land...in many cases, you have to choose between a game getting delayed or it being rushed. And guess what? People would be up in arms regardless of the outcome
At least with the former, when the game comes out....it will have been polished
Re: Rumour: Rayman Could be Planned as DLC in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS
@IceClimbers Sakurai may not care about business politics, but last time I checked he isn't bankrolling the game. Nintendo is...
