The metaverse discourse is back, and now Reggie's in on it.
Former COO and President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, thinks the metaverse — the network of 3D worlds that is purported to eventually replace or enhance real-life socialisation — is the future of gaming, and maybe even just the future in general, according to an interview he recently gave to Yahoo! Finance.
"I do believe that this vision is something that we're all marching to. I do believe it's going to be led by gaming companies and I do believe that — if delivered in a way that's fun, that's compelling — it's an experience that people will want to have."
When asked what the metaverse was, and how it could change the world, here's how Reggie described it:
"[The metaverse is] a space that's immersive and interactive, a space that has the ability to be modified, but can still be persistent. Imagine walking on sand, and seeing other footprints — that's an example of where you're able to modify an environment but it is persistent. You've seen what other people have done."
Interestingly, Fils-Aimé specifically cites Elden Ring as a game that's currently "dominating popular conversation," and praises FromSoftware as "an example of a company that's stayed true to what they are."
At the very beginning of the interview, Reggie gives his advice to other companies — "Focus on your North Star," he says, "and don't lose sight of that. Despite all the supply chain challenges, despite inflationary pressures, despite all the noise."
Do you think the metaverse is the endgame? Would you rather it wasn't? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Don’t meta my verse, Reggie! 😠 lol
I ain't marching. You'll have to drag me.
There's the daily Reggie article, was wondering where it was.
@LXP8 I like Reggie a lot, I just don't care to know his daily thoughts seeing as how, ya know, he's no longer with the company.
Reggie is slowly falling off. Huge fan of his, but this whole crypto thing is gonna be a disaster
While the headsets are as big as they are the whole VR thing will not go mainstream meaning the metaverse won't either.
Please no. Leave reality and games separate. I don’t want to live in a screen.
metaverse is just a buzzword. a big metaverse like the oasis is just technology wise extremely difficult.
“Imagine walking on sand, and seeing other footprints” Sounds like all Reggie cares about right now is landing a a job where he can be the Molyneux of the metaverse…
You can take your metaverse and shove it where the sun don't shine!😁 Have a nice day!
Hell no to the "meta" whatever.
Really selling the idea of the metaverse. I don't need to imagine walking on sand. I can just get a kid's sandpit or travel to the beach.
The only viable excuse for the Metaverse is if the world went on some insane lockdown again, which likely won't happen unless COVID didn't give out a clear lesson on what to do during a pandemic.
The concept of the Metaverse may be simple in Reggie's eyes, but unfortunately he needs to accept the reality that it's being abused by the financial sector.
I’d rather see Dave Lee Travis play Macbeth
This'll be at best a gimmick that'll die out momentarily like Stadia.
Even more niche than both that and VR dare I say.
All this is above my small head I don't get how crypto currency can be worth more than the amount of gold there is in the planet. I don't get what good digital currenxcy is in the real world. I don't get how everyone experiencing the same 3D world is any less problematic as everyone sharing the real one. Yuck. None of it is real, yet we are told every year in Game Awards how important it all is...whilst slapping millionaires on the back for a job well done. I'll try to just ignore it all for as long as possible I reckon lol.
If this metaverse bs, and NFTs for that matter, is the future of entertainment, I'd rather be bored to hell until I die.
Sorry, but a digital world isn’t going to replace the real world.
Not sure what Reggie’s talking about, given that dedicated gamers seem to be vocally disinterested in the Metaverse space.
Then again, it seems the gaming industry does continually seem to prefer peddling to casuals… Hopefully Nintendo stays predictably off trend for a long time!
Well if Reggie said it then it must be true - Mr Rent-a-headline
Look metaverse is not a bad idea per say,(It sucks LOL) but to say its where we are headed? I just can't agree with. Games are meant to be that, games, and wile I'm ok with a optional metaverse, I don't ever want it to replace life. Life is already stressful enough, I don't think I need my life to be on the internet, literally.
But hey, its not like they are trying to listen to people anyway.
Oh look, the businessman thinks the pro-business future is the bright one.
Another day, another Reggie newsitem on Nintendolife. He didn't get this attention when he WAS the CEO of Nintendo of America, why now?
The more I read the comments on this website the more shocked I get at how surprisingly ignorant you people are
I am now reading wind in the willows. I am slowly realising that games don’t need me to play them xxx
...Meanwhile I just prefer to play single player games and stuff. Screw multiplayer mmos open world stuff or whatever. lol
Metaverse will go the same way as 3dtv/movies
Oh boy, this is gonna be awesome 🍿🥤
No… Reggie, not you too!
It’s just not going to though is it? Metaverses have been around for ages now, it’s exactly what Second Life is and the vast majority don’t care about it.
You just can’t make something that will please everyone in the way the pro metaverse people seem to think it can. The exact things people want are also the exact things that put people off entirely.
Let’s face it, if it wasn’t for all the crypto crooks realising NFTs could be used to promote their scams and that a metaverse is an easy selling point for the apparent usefulness of an NFT (spoilers: they are not useful and everything they claim to do can be done already in more secure and environmentally friendly ways) it wouldn’t be in the conversation. It’d be a been there, done that, didn’t quite go to plan sort of thing.
Now if we can all just move on with some actual innovations rather than rehashed money grabbing schemes who knows what exciting things we’ll come up with!
Sheesh, that was a close one. I was starting to worry that we weren't going to hear from Reggie today.
Why are comments talking about nfts and bitcoin? Reggie is just talking about VR here. e.g. maybe VR games and VR chatting will eventually not suck. Honestly VR stuff is fun for a little bit at a time (and Second Life from 20 years ago which basically is the metaverse was kind of fun), but no one has ever really made a good reason for any of this to be super popular. Plus there is still the 'flailing around blindly by yourself in a VR headset and alienating your roommates' problem.
Also: recall that the term metaverse came from a dystopian novel so it is kind of funny people are actively striving for it under that term. 😆
Seems to me that the only people interested in going over to the metaverse are the ones I'm more than happy to see the back of. Hopefully it'll leave more time and space in the real world.
@GrailUK cryptocurrency can only be worth more than all the gold because people don’t cash out, if everyone cashed out then nobody would buy and it would all be worthless
I’d rather not have the meta verse be the future, I imagine it would be full of crypto scams and NFTs and advertisements. People want it to be like ready player one but forget the message of it
I'm marching to the Reggieverse it will be better place Reggie's face and body will be the only thing you see
I realize the term "metaverse" is a bad look, but its just a new name for a thing that existed before Facebook spent billions of dollars to make the worst version of it possible.
I'm sure there's plenty of value to the vague virtual reality concept, but Facebook has actively hurt the whole concept. I dare say, VR in general has been set back by it (which is probably for the best, because Facebook's idea for it is the worst and should burn and everyone at Facebook should go bankrupt and vanish from human existence).
@kkslider5552000 Facebook should burn and fade from existence too. Can't stand the place and the people that run it are incompetent.
I find it funny that everyone says Metaverse is the future, but no one knows what the Metaverse is, how it works and how they should sell it.
For now, and the foreseeable future, its still a buzzword.
This clown is utterly out of touch, he's just trying to jump on the next big scam wagon to make a quick buck at the expense of others.
If games ever reach a point of only being VR then that's the point when I won't be buying games anymore.
I don’t even understand what he is talking about.
@ModdedInkling yeah and we saw the effect on people’s mental health COVID and lockdowns had. Imagine now where we blur lines on gaming reality even more…rather than keep them as separate entities. Couple that with corporations trying to make a buck along the whole way and it’s only going to make society and its collective mental hurdles even greater as a whole.
I really hope that the longer that Reggie is removed from Nintendo, the less he forgets what made Nintendo unique and wholesome. Remains to be seen though. I believe we will still see more of Reggie in this industry in the years to come.
The more he talks post Nintendo the more I lose respect for him.
i dont get how mainstream VR can be when theyre just too clunky and expensive to regularly use. unless they really think headsets can surpass phones/laptops for communication and entertainment
Sounds very interesting if Nintendo dose a metaverse
Every few years there is a new online universe that turns into a pathetic chatroom...
We're all marching to the metaverse? What?
Free Guy, when life imitates art..
I don't think calling it "metaverse" was the right move...and it's not like Elden Ring was the first game in the franchise to do the messages thing, that's been around since the beginning of the franchise.
Cringe, evil, no thanks
A lot people are doing the opposite of "marching to".
Come back in 30 years, then maybe we will have some semblance of a metaverse of ONE game company
@lodger I agree. The dulcet tones of The Hairy Cornflake would lend the role a certain gravitas.
Will it be anything like Miiverse?
Well, I won't be following wherever he's going or pointing in that case. I'm trying to get out if this fiction, this matrix, not in matricception.
@Slowdive Yup, as it turns out social media can become a terrible thing that has bad effects on people if you allow it to be taken over by power hungry people who are desperate to control the narrative. It's why everyone feels so alienated and powerless these days, because that's the type of social media environment we have cultivated. Heck it's apparently for the most part just a bunch of bots these days anyways. Humanity is slowly being eliminated from the internet.
Wait does this fool think dark souls messages are the metaverse lol
