Nintendo Direct week is both the joy and the bane of a games journalist's work week. So much to talk about! So little time! So much hype! And then you spend the next two weeks slooowwwwly dissecting it all, discussing it all, and finding out the details that the Direct didn't tell you.
This Direct was a pretty good one by many metrics — no Mario (unless you count the movie and the Rabbids spin-off), but some Zelda, lots of indies, Splatoon, Bayonetta, Resident Evil, and GoldenEye, like a tour of Nintendo's Greatest Hits.

What did Team NL think of the Direct? Read on to find out!
What were your expectations?
KATE: …Admittedly I was ready for the promised/leaked “Zelda blowout” that never came, but I didn’t have any other expectations, really. I like to be surprised by the contents of the Direct, and I was!
JIM: I’ll admit, my expectations were sky-high after being promised a Zelda port to every franchise game known to man, but this did mean that I was not ready for everything else — which, as it turns out, was a lot!
OLLIE: See, now I was mentally preparing myself for a distinct lack of Zelda beforehand, because I really struggle to believe anything that leakers say, despite the obvious fact that this Direct’s existence was correctly predicted. I was expecting a lot of surprises, regardless, and thankfully they came with abundance.
ALANA: Even with rumours of a “Zelda blowout”, I wasn’t actually expecting Breath of the Wi… oh, wait, Tears of the Kingdom to appear. But otherwise I went in like I normally do – temperate expectations. And the Direct, for me, blew me out of the water.
Fire Emblem Engage
OLLIE: I’ve never been into Fire Emblem, so I have no strong thoughts about this one, I’m afraid...!
KATE: I feel like we’ve had a lot of Fire Emblem. But I know it bothers me when people say we’ve had too many of a game or genre that I love, because I certainly don’t agree… so let’s just say that I think I’ve had enough Fire Emblem.
JIM: Wow, starting with that shot of the intricately designed ceiling in a Direct where everyone was expecting talk of Zelda stuff… Jeez Nintendo, talk about getting my heart racing.
ALANA: Okay, I absolutely thought that this was something else, and then Zelda, before it was Fire Emblem. It looks really clean! The animations were ridiculously good. I’m not a big Fire Emblem fan, but I know people who are, so I’m happy for you all!
It Takes Two
JIM: I am so ready for a good bit of couch co-op. The visuals are kinda stinky but hey, I’m here for the story and good vibes only.
KATE: This seems like such a perfect fit for Switch, so I’m glad to see it. It looks a LOT worse than it does on Xbox Series X, though, so that’s a bit sad. It’s a beautiful game.
ALANA: Right?? This looks pretty rough. I know Hazelight said it was unlikely the game would get a Switch port, but I suppose ‘Game of the Year Winner’ changes that. I’ve heard great things about this one, but I’ll be honest, I have little interest in getting it. I also don’t have anyone to play it with in-person right now.
KATE: I wonder if Nintendo threw money at them to do it? I doubt it. Microsoft and Sony would, Nintendo probably wouldn’t.
Fitness Boxing: Fist of the North Star
JIM: Kinda like when you see one of those dog breeds which is, say, a Chihuahua mixed with a Husky. You look at it and think, how… how did that happen?
ALANA: I genuinely thought this was Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio PS4 game) at first. But Fitness Boxing? Sure! Change it up. It made me laugh.
Tunic
JIM: Ok, I’ll admit it, my signal dropped out during the reveal of this one so I had to get it on catch-up after. But oh WOW this looks like a warm hug. I am ready, my little fox boy, I won’t let the nasty WiFi let you down again.
ALANA: This is one of those that I have on Game Pass but I haven’t got around to playing yet! Look at the little fox fella! He’s so cute! Maybe the portability on Switch will be the thing that pushes me to play it…
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
KATE: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! A Wonderful Life was my first Harvest Moon game, so I’m thrilled that it’s getting a new lick of paint. But… they’ve renamed all the characters! That’s so weird to me! I don’t care though, gimme gimme gimme. And then also remake all the DS games, too.
JIM: *quietly whispers* I have never really given Harvest Moon all that much of my love. Maybe this will change things, but ehhhhhh.
OLLIE: Like Kate, this was my first Harvest Moon game, and still probably my favourite of the bunch, so I’m absolutely thrilled it’s getting a remake! I can’t wait to just chill out on my farm and listen to the wonderful theme tune… Ahh.
ALANA: God, this was my jam growing up. It took until Stardew Valley to find another farming game that really scratched an itch, so I’m really looking forward to picking this one up next year. The GameCube is making a comeback!
Splatoon 3
JIM: You’re really going to give us a Splatfest where one of the options is ‘FUN’ and expect people to contemplate whether they would take ‘GEAR’ or ‘GRUB’? Come on, man!
ALANA: I like the twist on the Splatfest question. I like Deep Cut, too. But, Jim, if you don’t know who to pick, always vote for Big Man.
Octopath Traveler II
ALANA: Okay, yes. Yes. Yes. I really loved Octopath Traveler, and HD-2D is like, the best visual style Square Enix has going right now. This looks like a huge visual upgrade from the original game. The music sounds stunning. The promise of intertwined stories is exciting. I. Am. Ready.
KATE: Square Enix needs to find a new font.
OLLIE: I need to play more of the first game… I think my brother borrowed it from me a while back… Give it back, man!
JIM: I just personally feel like Square Enix could have done more at this Direct…
Fae Farm
JIM: It’s a farming sim meets *spins wheel* magic! Way to go team!
KATE: They had me from the first five seconds of this trailer. Fantasy Life meets farming? I only wish I had been the one to make it. I’m so ready.
Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line
ALANA: I’m not joking here – this was the highlight of the Direct for me. I’ve got about 150 hours in the two 3DS Theatrhythm games and I’m scared for my wallet right now. 385 songs in the base game alone is utterly ridiculous, though. I’m sort of hoping for touchscreen controls for the Switch in handheld mode, but I’m not holding out much hope. I’m still picking this up day one though. I am so excited to play more Theatrhythm.
JIM: ‘It’s a musical blast from the past!’ I am desperate to know what came first, this trailer opener or the idea to return to the Theatrhythm series.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
JIM: Wait, what’s this game?
ALANA: I haven’t been seeing a lot of hype for this, and, yeah, I liked what I played of the first game, but I’m not itching for more. Nintendo needed to show this because it’s out soon. I am excited for that soundtrack, though.
KATE: I’m sure it’ll sell loads, and it seems like a fun thing to do with the Mario franchise, but… it’s not that appealing to me. Mostly because I really hate the Rabbids. Sorry!
Go to page two for our thoughts on Pikmin, Harvestella, Bayonetta 3, Resident Evil, GoldenEye, and Kirby...

Goldeneye and Pikmin 4 are enough to make me VERY happy.
(but the rest was pretty garbage)
Needs a real big christmas title. Pokemon doesn't count.
Can't wait for Bayonetta 3. A few too many 2023 titles and farming sims.
Happy for JRPG fans, but how do they even finish these titles before dying of old age?
It was... Alright. Not the biggest wow factors in the series, but it had some good stuff.
Didn't like the new direction Fire Emblem has taken, looks cheesy. Atelier Ryza looks to wrap up the series well enough. Pikmin 4 is exciting. Was hoping something on F-Zero would come up (that isn't service game friendly).
Overall, pretty content with what was shown.
Other than a few obvious highlights it really wasn't a good one. So much tripe (unless you're into tripe - in which case more power to you).
I hope more western gamers enjoy hentai-eske Chibi JRPGs and Farming sims than I do. It kinda made me depressed for the direction Nintendo thinks gaming should go.
So glad we got Pikmin 4: Electric Boogaloo, Goldeneye for the Xbox, a $60 Wii game, an update to a sports game that exists, a whole damn lot of farming and rpg games, an age-restricted video for Bayonetta 3, and the first Zelda game that'll be banned from the UK.
After all those farming games I need some stables for my new farming career. When's your next stability update Nintendo?
Great news for anyone who likes farming RPGs, not so great for the rest of us...
I’m a farmer now, the direct changed me.
Far too much…..not sure who puts these directs together but they really need sacking.
They have no pacing, content all over the place, and struggle with balance.
I’m sure Nintendo don’t need to show off all these titles in a direct. Split the low level stuff out for a partner showcase. And save the big hitters for the direct!
Fire Emblem looked slick as, albeit the new characters looked rather generic. but I don't think it detracted from the game any.
Octopath Traveller 2 looks amazing. More HD2D games the better and glad OT gets a chance to develop as a series.
Bayonetta 3 looks ace.
Happy about the Front Mission games, but if Forever Entertainment are going to remake Japanese games, they need to look a bit closer at the source material. Their versions lose a little of the original's spirit.
Zelda is Zelda. I'll scream louder when I see more of the game lol.
Tales of Symphonia is a Gamecube gem.
Any Direct with Radiant Silvergun is made of win to be honest.
NSO Expension pass got a very decent second wind.
Probably forgot something lol. Oh yeah, Pikmin 4. (Easily forgettable to be fair - the announcement, not the game ofc, but very nice t-shirt!)
On the whole, I was very happy with it. I think folk can be forgiven if they aren't fond of farming games to think the Direct wasn't much better than an Indie showcase. With no E3, i was expecting much more announcements than we got from the big N. Who knows, maybe it does bode well for new hardware next year. Or maybe we get a Mario Direct nearer to the film. Who knows. But it was fine. There is tons to play right now.
Another year, no windwaker.. my last hope is after they close down the wii u eshop probably so they can get those last minute sales
I get the feeling for the past couple of years Nintendo has shifted their attention to releasing the majority of their big games in the beginning of the year as opposed to focusing the big hitters in September, October and November. The truth is there are some great games coming early next year, but the end of this year has tailed off somewhat (although I’m looking forward to Bayonetta).
I get Pokemon will sell 10m units, but I think a lot of the apathy towards the direct was the lack of that alternate ‘under the tree on Christmas morning’ game like a Zelda collection or a Donkey Kong. Perhaps we’d have been more excited if this Direct would have been in late December showing what was just around the corner.
With so many unanswered questions about titles that were absent along with it's heavy emphasis on farming games and RPGS...yeah, not their best if you ask me.
Definitely doesn't hold a handle to their February one, either.
Garbage, except for Goldeneye. Nintendo will continue to drip their 1st party titles as long as the Switch continues to sell well.
@RickRau5 I dunno man, they want to sell software to the large install base at this period of it's lifecycle. Maybe Covid is having an affect (y'know, like they say at the beginning.)
It was a pretty bad Direct all things considered, but it had some super exciting announcements
Got very little out of it. Pretty much nothing of what I was hoping for, and a lot of stuff I couldn’t care less about. No Zelda remakes, no Metroid at all, nothing on Qube 10th anniversary (though I think I’ve found a date since)… But a GC-era Kirby? For $60? Stuff that.
Fire Emblem was all I needed and was the game I was hoping to see the most, so was pleasantly surprised. Also the new project zero and master detective archive looked pretty good.
@GrailUK every large business has adapted over that bottleneck and is past that. Years into the Switch its obvious indies and 1st party are what feeds the system, and the latter has gone very stale.
There were some good
stuff but the show was weak overall.
Pikmin 4 is an absolutely massive announcement for me We're getting a new Fire Emblem soon. I've been wanting an official localized release for Fatal Frame 4 for years now. A bunch of the smaller announcements had me interested as well. And, you know, nice to FINALLY have a name and release date for the new Zelda.
This was an immense Direct for me, and I'm so happy it wasn't headlined by some ancient, overpriced GameCube remasters.
I'm pretty pumped for the Kirby remaster and the fact Zelda has a date, though we'll see if they actually stick to that.
Now, I'm a massive Fire Emblem fan and I've been waiting Direct after Direct for a new game, but man, I am not excited for Engage in the least. Didn't like what I saw, seems pandering and that it won't be able to stand on its own two legs as a distinct title. Here's hoping the gameplay is great! Three Houses didn't exactly set the bar high for that, so I'm hopeful.
Meh for me. (4/10)
Only four games I have interest about:
Faefarm
Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life
Mario + Rabbids Spark of Hope
Kirby Return to Dreamland DELUXE
Lots to be happy about for me, especially Merry Mountain on wave 3 which is just in time for Christmas! However, unless you wear green welly boots and wear Barbour clothing, there were a few too many farming sims for me IMO. That said, Mario and Rabbids is already pre-ordered and waiting patiently for GoldenEye (which is a must) and Zelda TOTK. Just hoping that one day soon a collection is made of the old NES and SNES Star Wars games as well as the N64 and Gamecube Rogue Squadron games.... oh along with
Shadows of the Empire as well please
I've said it many times but I'll say it again: it feels like this Direct was catered to me specifically. We got:
Yeah there were some duds here and there like the RE Cloud versions (I understand why they're like this: it doesn't mean I have to like it) and the absolute gut punch of Pikmin Bloom getting a spotlight when we thought it'd be Pikmin 4 (I know it came straight afterwards but man I felt as though I'd been incredibly baited) but overall: possibly one of my favourite Directs ever.
4/10
I usually (fairly) enjoy any general Nintendo Direct myself and leave with fairly happy feelings, but this direct left me disappointed. Probably the first time I felt this way for a general Nintendo Direct.
Outside of Goldeneye 64 and Mario Party 3 on N64 NSO, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, and Tears of the Kingdom, nothing else from the direct left me impressed and many of the things I expected (Game Boy NSO, Metroid Prime/Wind Waker/Twilight Princess, the new Mario or Donkey Kong game that the SMO team is working on) were nowhere in sight, not to mention that that Fist of the North Star game being a reskinned Fitness Boxing game was a gut punch to me as I would've vastly preferred a traditional action game instead.
Nothing really for me, but I have a Steam Deck pre-ordered coming this october, november or december.
So that will tide me over until well into the next year, I think (it will be old games I will play though, there's nothing new coming out I'm looking forward to, except Resident Evil 4 for PS4 or Steam Deck).
Until I get the Steam I will try to get the most out of my recent Wii U purchase.
It's a lot of "who gives a crap?" for me sadly. We've had so much Kirby, so much Pokemon, so much Fire Emblem and there were SO MANY FARMING SIMS.
I mean it is a bunch of games, obviously not everything needs to be for everyone. But essentially we got a few new updates for games we've known have been coming for years. And an emulated 25 year old game.
Not exciting. No Metroid. No Zelda beyond nearly another year of waiting. No Mario beyond Ubisoft's title, no Donkey Kong.
It's like they are begging all of us to buy Steam Decks.
So many farming/life rpgs. Some pleasant surprises, but nothing over exciting enough to get “hyped” about.
At least we have less than half a month until October, where there’ll be a tone of great games to play.
Often when I go into these with no real expectations I am happily surprised. This time... I wasn't. It wasn't bad, just nothing really caught my eye. Lots and lots of rpgs, farming games, and square enix. And some ports and remasters. There were a couple surprises but not ones I personally was super excited about.
Aside from a lot of the rumoured games missing, my biggest disappointment was the expansion pack and no Gameboy Advance.
Yes, we are getting Golden Eye at some point before the end of 2023 but I really thought when Nintendo added another tier to the Online service, they would try to compete with xbox and playstations subscription services.
9 N64 games over the next year, 5 of which are Pokemon and Mario Party is a joke.
I feel like the Direct’s presentation and pacing was a bit off for me. Pikmin 4 is huge news to me but just dropping a logo as part of one of Miyamoto’s asides kind of dulled its impact. Zelda similarly wasn’t the knockout trailer I was expecting.
Nothing looked good to me other than zelda and pikmin 4. It takes 2 was great but it looks awful on switch
I think people need to stop giving rumors credibility. Most folks that are upset are more upset over stuff that Nintendo never promised but rumors did than the actual games shown in the direct. If you go in with no expectations you can just enjoy what is unveiled. Granted NL stirs this cycle up for clicks so it is what it is. I loved the Direct personally.
"...so let’s just say that I think I’ve had enough Fire Emblem.."
We can't be friends.
Why so many Farming Sims? I count 5 at least. Oh well.
Octopath Traveler II blew my mind for excitement. That’s the best news to me (besides TotK of course)
What did I think? Never jump on the hype train.I’ve learned this lesson, MANY, Direct’s ago! Nintendo has announced, long Directs. Only for me to get bored, twenty minutes in. This was no different!
To see the media in a frenzy, prior too, was ridiculous. I expected lots of games, with an anime look. Games that looked like stuff I’ve played, back in the 90’s. I didn’t expect, anything, I saw the media go, on and on, about.
But there were some surprises. WHY SO MANY FARMING GAMES?! 😩 Way too many, RPG’s. Also, I expected a big game, at the end. But I was expecting a delay, until holiday, 2023. I’m tired of seeing Kirby. I used to like those games. I’m over them now. Nintendo didn’t show this much love, for any other franchise, during its anniversary.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. The industry has become a snooze fest. The latest, State of Play, helped solidify those feelings. Over in the world of, Xbox, it feels no better. Basically feels like, “just wait a little longer.”
At least Goldeneye is coming out. I’m not excited about that. But at least people can, shut up about it. Let’s see how they feel, once they play it. N64 era, has not aged well. Now if Rare would make a new Banjo and Kazooie. Not that I want it, but I’m tired of hearing people talk about that, too!
Oh yeah, that new Fire Emblem makes me want to barf and cry at the same time. Looks super cheesy and gay. Total disappointment after Three Houses.
Jeez Nintendolife really doesn't like the Kirby franchise. You are mostly all really negative about a franchise getting a lot of love on it's anniversary. I get it's not your cup of tea but fans are ecstatic and appreciate the love. HAL knows how to please. Return to Dreamland is a fan favorite, especially in Japan.
Doubt anyone has ever complained about Mario having 3 games with him in it, in a year.
@Snatcher Nice
Rare for me to be seemingly much more optimistic than most. 9/10 for me. The big reveals were huge for me. Wish some of the farm sims were swapped for big indie titles, but the s not a huge detriment. Can’t believe Nintendo gave us BotW’s sequel and I came away from the Direct saying, “Pikmin 4 is actually soon!” I liked it better than State of Play by a wide margin too.
It’s an 8/10 for me. The ones I got excited was Fire Emblem Engage, Project Zero 4: Mask Of The Lunar Eclipse, Pikmin 4, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe, Octopath Traveler 2.
However some things let down were the many farming sims and the cloud versions of resident evil (which are understandable at least). But I am excited for Project Zero 4 HD remake a lot.
I'm embarrassed to say that I only went to see the Direct is for Legend of Zelda : Tears Of The Kingdom. That's the only reason why I watched it...
@Lord Don’t you mean “FARM too much?”…couldn’t resist.
Oh and I also wanted the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess remakes. Although they are on Wii U.. WII U GAMES GO FOR TO MUCH.
@outsider83
Because not everyone have interest with typical games like zelda, xenoblade, splatoon, metroid, etc.
Good news for gamers who like farm sim games, now they will get their games. I personally like the farm sim games from Nintendo Direct such as Faefarm, Story of Seasons A Wonderful Life. That was great news for me, maybe not great news for other gamers. But at least there is always the audiences for specific games. The games that not interesting for you maybe very interesting for other peoples.
Fire Emblem looks good. Pikmin 4 was a surprise, but Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the only thing that I'm really excited for.
Like, where are the old game remakes for like .. hmm I don't know, the GAME THAT STARTED IT ALL, NINTENDO? Or maybe even Oracle of Ages/Seasons? Yeah not everyone would be happy to see Oracle of Ages/Seasons but still, they were pretty good games.
@LonkTheLonk here, have some fresh produce. 🍓🍒🍎🍊🍑
The Direct was great, people need to stop expecting things that were never promised to them.
I thought the last State of Play was decent too and that would've been terrible if I went in expecting a new Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid remasters etc(other games that have been rumored).
Nothing grabbed me but there were only a few things I wanted to see. Retro Game Challenge Collection would have been awesome, but that most likely is not going to appear. I am a bit disappointed they didn’t announce Urban Champion x Ring Fit Adventure. Would have paid good money to see them announce Metroid: Federation Force HD just to watch the wails online. But it was a giant commercial in the end, and didn’t even tell me that knowing was half the battle at the end.
@Kirby_Girl I also found it funny how Kate mentions of having enough Kirby and Fire Emblem games but loses her mind over more farming simulator games lol. As if we don't already have enough of those games already.
Really excited for Fire Emblem, Pikmin 4, Kirby, Octopath Traveler 2, of course Mario & Rabbids 2 and Bayonetta 3, and sure, Zelda!! It was a pretty good Direct, imo!
7.8/10 too much farmland
@tseliot Like how you mention having too much Fire Emblem games but still go crazy over more farming games which has more games than Fire Emblem.
Other than Zelda, Bayonetta, or Mario vs. Rabbids, about the only game I am really looking forward to from this Direct is Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life.
Like everyone else, A Wonderful Life was my first Harvest Moon game, and easily my favorite. I have it on both GameCube and PlayStation 2. I even started a new save file last year (before I got sucked into Genshin Impact), so maybe taking this with me on the go will make me play it more.
I especially hope they add some new features, such as an automated watering system. In my new save file, I am spending literally all day watering my crops, leaving little time to do anything else, such as interacting with the villagers.
As it is, I barely had enough time to court one of the potential suitors in the game (this time, I went for Nami, and her fickle nature, plus her room where her journal was being locked most of the time, meant that I had to really put in the effort to grow the crops she liked to give to her).
So I would really love an automated watering system in this remake. Either that, or slowing down the clock so I have more time to do my chores on the farm and do other stuff around the town, such as interacting with the villagers and befriending them.
I certainly agree with those who had qualms with the pacing. Like, Pikmin 4 might be my most anticipated game ever but I spent the whole Miyamoto section fearing it was just Bloom talk. By the time 4 was announced it was more relief than excitement.
I’m also getting burnt out on micro-trailers. Ex: Pikmin, Zelda. I get they’re teasers, but they’re not even getting started before they cut em off. I feel strung along instead of curious.
@brunojenso Agreed
Everything apart from the cloud versions of RE was great. I tried the demo of RE: Village... unplayable... and we have very fast internet here. One moment there was full speed on the cloud and the next is was dead... cloud gaming sucks.
All the new first parties are from series I've tried and failed to get into, and I still haven't gotten back to Animal Crossing after the last big update/DLC, so I'm not looking for more life/farming sims. I also started on the GameCube/GBC, so N64 does nothing for me. Some of the ports are nice, but Octopath 2 is the only new game that really catches my interest. And I'm a bit more optimistic about Tears of the Kingdom than I was before, but I'm not going to be sold on it unless we see the return of some of the more important Zelda elements Breath of the Wild abandoned. Overall, I'd say this was a decent Direct for certain people, but a pretty bad one for me.
@Joker1234 LOL yeah and it's fine if she likes to farm or whatever in games but LOL why be negative that HAL is doing TOO MUCH for Kirby. Would they say this if Nintendo went all out with Zelda or Mario? HAL just gives a crap about their character's anniversary and as fans we have been EXCITED. So this is just another great announcement that shows they're passionate and care. Care enough to remake a fan favorite, to have some great musicians play AMAZING renditions for fans, Put out a STUNNING 3D entry that hits it out of the park on it's first try, and to put out a very fun party game for only 15 bucks with loads of fanservice! WHAT IS HAL THINKING!? Do they know they don't HAVE to do all that for their fans!!! LOL Maybe they want to because they actually care.
I'm interested in Zelda, Kirby, and Pikmin. Fire Emblem and Octopath Traveler 2 are a maybe for me. So 2023 is looking okay. Nothing changes for my 2022 plans.
Didn’t do much for me, I would have been stoked on Bayo 3 but I don’t like hack & slash games that grade me on accuracy, I just like to wreck s$&t so I never even finished Bayo 2. Honestly though? I’ve been playing Splatoon 3 CONSTANTLY since launch and there’s enough there to keep me happy for a long time so I’m not real fussed. I’m probably gonna snag Sonic Frontiers and a couple indies between now and the end of the year and I’m good with that. I’ve got one of the worlds most ridiculous Switch backlogs (900+ give or take) so I’m not starved for rad games to play lol. Plus, I managed to squeeze a few really great games onto my laptop via Steam so I’m in a pretty good place. All that to say- the Direct was a big “meh” for me but It’s no big deal.
A Wonderful Life and Fire Emblem are my top picks.
Waiting to see how Harvestella and Fae Farm review.
Will probably get Tales of Symphonia and Ryza 3 further down the line.
I am excited that Pilotwings 64 and 1080 were added to NSO. . .just wish we could PURCHASE the individual games we want.
Overall though it was a pretty Nintendo Direct for me.
Alana can’t let a single article go without referring to something as “stunning.” Also, every GameCube Resident Evil (0, Remake, 4) is already on switch, along with five and six if those are your bag.
I’ll play Factorio, Fire Emblem, and Zelda. Bayonetta can wait, I have the first two sitting here for backlog days. I don’t think I’ll get Octopath 2 until it’s on sale.
I thought it was a pretty decent direct, I'll definitely be getting...
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Octopath Traveler II
Pikmin 4
I also liked the Zelda announcements with the name drop and release date.
Nintendo seem to be holding back a lot of Zelda, just showing us very small clips from the game. Hopefully we will see more in January or February. The direct was okay but I really wanted more Zelda shown. Though the direct was all over the place.
I suppose we have had most of the big guns released now for the Switch, I’m certain that development is moving forward now for games for a new system, whenever that may be released
When did Nintendo say "Zelda blowout" for a Direct...? NL, rumors are not facts.
The Direct was okay. Pikmin fans have a lot to be happy about, I'm sure seeing that announcement put some smiles on faces. My highlights were Goldeneye, Bayonetta 3, Kirby, Front Mission and Zelda's new title.
It was a safe Direct, they wanted to hit everyone again, but I think we should expect these things going forward with the general ones.
I was extremely disappointed with the direct. The only thing I liked (and was very excited about) was the Harvest Moon Wonderful Life reveal but then I felt let down that I have to wait about a year till it releases.
It’s nice they want to release more n64 games, but how about adding GameBoy games? Nintendo always wants to give gamers what Nintendo wants us to play, not what gamers want to play. It is so disappointing.
I have only 1 game from Nintendo in my wishlist:
The other 3 games in my wishlist:
It was alright and not the absolute garage fire some folks tend to say. Having Theaterhythm come back was an absolute joy to see, along with Rain Code, Kirby, Fatal Frame, and I always wanted to give Rune Factory 3 a shot. And honestly? I don’t think the putting the spotlight on some farming games is that big of a deal.
Remember, you or I may not like farming but someone else does.
Zelda TOTK and Goldeneye were the only highlights in this Direct for me. The rest I just glazed right over. So I was pleased we got those 2 games but really bummed out that there was absolutely no mention of Winder Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD or Metroid Prime HD. I would've loved to have been able to play at least one of those to tide me over until TOTK releases in May next year.
It was so-so. Shakes hand sideways
Decent. I think it was more of a dissapointed becsuse the lack of a June direct. Expected bigger announcements
Even if it was a weak Direct for me, I'm still really happy that it happened. There was only one positive highlight for me in the past direct, Zelda's release date, but it's a helluva good feeling to finally have announced (a little later than I would have liked but it at least meets the spring window as forecasted).
Excited about Fatal Frame, Rain Cloud, Ib, Resident Evil, Life is Strange, GoldenEye and Bayonetta 3 out of everything shown.
Im glad the HD Zelda ports were not confirmed.... Gives us loyal Wii U buyers a reason to feel good and special lol
It had its moments, but much of it was fluff and stuff we already knew about. Love Pikmin 4, Front Mission, Kirby (tho we sure have seen a lot of him lately)…Zelda is great for the fans. Bayonetta….Had enough of Fire Emblem, at least until it goes on sale in a year or two…
Not terrible, but also the worst Direct since 2020. Way too many RPGs, farming sims, and third-parties in general. There should've just been a massive third-party Direct before this. It makes first-party Nintendo look rather quiet. I'm surprised that there was no Mario movie teaser trailer. I guess that could just randomly drop anytime now! Sure, it's great to see the new Zelda, but that was a must if it really is coming next Spring.
6/10 for me there wasn't enough farming sims
The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom looks fantastic. Excited always for the upcoming Waves for Mario Kart 8. And Pikmin 4. There were a lot of nice games tucked in the presentation. Games like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Sifu were nice surprises as I thought they would be Sony exclusive. Sifu got a 9 from IGN. There was something for everyone in this direct. I'll be playing Goldeneye as well. 😎
Really excited for Octopath 2, but very disappointed to hear nothing about Advance Wars.
It was really good
It was O.K as far as Nintendo Directs go, but personally, I felt it was a huge disappointment. It didn't deliver a single thing worth getting truly excited over. Not to mention, many of us were very disappointed at the lack of remakes like Metroid and Zelda. They gave us nothing, unfortunately, other than Goldeneye. Even though we know not to take rumors seriously, it's hard not to feel disappointed over this.
Many of us are old now and hope for classic ports and remakes of our favorite classics. I was hoping for some particular GC ports and some Metroid...
This was my favorite Direct in a long time. I love Zelda, Pikmin, farm sims, RPGs, and Fire Emblem, so this was really made for me. I wouldn’t of minded more Zelda though(still hoping for an OoT remake or a port of 3D). No matter how fun or disappointing a Direct is, it’s always a great time.
Thank God we didn't get it.
Tphd wind waker he have been playable 3 times on three consoles. The hd versions would've just been wiiu ports. Wind waker I'll forgive since it actually has effort put in and the game looks beautiful and timeless.... As for that retextured outdated tp... I won't. Experience knowing now that Nintendo said no to tantalus when they offered to completely remake the game.
Let it come to another system when they feel like doing the work. Either that or port games that aren't recent ports. Wind waker and tp aren't the only Zelda titles in existence. Remake the Capcom Zelda titles... The wind waker sequels... Hell the original titles on nes snes
Depending on your tastes, this was either a fantastic Direct or a lacklustre one!
If you're into JRPGs / farming sims etc (nothing wrong with this at all btw!) then you would have had a great time.
For me personally, I was hoping for a 'surprise drop' akin to the Mertroid Dread announcement last year. A new Starfox game, or F-Zero, would have really impressed me.
TotK release date is comforting, but May just seems.... so far away.
Mind you, I'm currently still loving Sunbreak and have just pre-ordered Monkey Island. I'll aim to wrap MI as soon as possible, then finally crack open Xenoblade 3. If FF7 CCR reviews are solid, I'll prob use that as my holiday game.
But nothing in the direct really excited me...
However, for those who don't have PS and/or havent played SIFU yet - this game is immaculate and a real great example of indie games done right. If the Switch version/port runs smooth enough then I'd highly recommend to anyone that is into the rogue genre and martial arts.
I really liked the direct and it will give it a 9. But I also went in without any expectations unlike those who were buying into all the rumours
GOLDENEYE!!! that’s all I need to say
Amazing. There could be less farming sims but we got a lot more than just that so all good.
Don't try and blame the 'leakers'. You do this every time a Direct comes along. Some random 'insider'/'leaker posts about these ports and you make 16 posts about it like the Director of Nintendo has just come out and announce them. You get taken for a ride every single time and likewise so do some on here.
Other than that, the direct was very good!
I've been considering buying a Switch since Metroid Dread came out, but don't see much point buying a console for just 1 game, so I watched this in the hope it might have something to appeal to me but unfortuantly not. I'm just not into farming sims or jrpgs personally. Each to their own, but think I'll keep looking for something else.
If anyone actually thinks Tuesdays Direct was the worst Direct ever you are an idiot, you clearly have either forgotten or didn't watch the majority of the Directs during the Wii U era, the 2018 Directs, September 2019 and February 2021 Directs those were terrible
Overall a very strong direct, albiet with a lack of Metroid and the twilight princess & windwaker ports I wanted. I don't know why Nintendo is still bothering with Cloud ports. Considering how disastrously bad the previous attempts with Kingdom hearts and others have been, you'd think they might learn a lesson.
Not only that, but I'd say the majority of switch owners own at least one other console that they could play these bigger games on anyway without forking out for a sub-par barely fucntioning cloud version on switch.m
Very disappointed they announced that Zelda spin off instead of Breath of the Wild 2
Zelda AND Kirby, I'm very happy 😍
It was a disguised Zelda delay, really. As for new announcements: lots of filler. Octo 2 is of course great news, as is Pikmin 4 for fans of the series. But that’s about it. The rest was farm farm sim sim b-tier horror strategy farm sim.
I just found it weird that neither ports of Wind Waker or Twilight Princess were announced.
These would have been perfect Christmas releases for this year.
Now Nintendo has basically no major Christmas release title whatsoever other than Pokemon in mid-November.
It's all very strange and disappointing to be honest. Most of the direct were just a rollercoaster of weird farming sims.
So surely Nintendo must come with another direct next month latest, announcing at least one major title for Holiday release?
As I get older I care less and less about Nintendo Directs... not sure why.
Goldeneye's return is cool, but even though I loved it as a kid, I don't want to play it again and playing online will probably suck.
I mostly yawned and rolled my eyes at the endless anime crap...
From this direct I've learned that JRPGs are apparently a hot ticket?
Hate the fact a lot of farm simulator games are just being presented, glad fans of those have something to be happy for.
As for me, was hoping for something different, however, seeing the octopath traveler sequel and some others, like the new detective game from danganronpa studio is enough reason to be happy. made the direct an 8.5 for me. I love rpgs and detective like games.
Keep resting in peace, dad.
It was horrible, what a bunch of crap. What was that? 30 Farming sims, 28 RPG's, a boxing game nobody wants, RE cloud games (and we all know they will play like garbage) and news about games we already knew about.
Pikmin 4 and Golden Eye were all I was interested in. Where was DK, Mario, F-Zero, Metroid? Or something really new, like a Wario game or something. No, instead we got more RPG's and the newest rage in gaming on the Switch since Animal Crossing.... Farming sims... We already have a million RPG's, so if that's not your cup of tea, this direct was underwhelming.
Kinda bad overall. First party announcements were alright, but nothing special. Third party stuff was the usual slog of whatever titles, square enix stuff and RPGs. Just not much there to be a crowd pleaser at all, really.
Plus ending on that zelda trailer... its hard to be excited for a game thats been known of for over 3 years now, and all we have seen is "botw again, but now with sky exploration and a couple powers we cannot gain much insight into cus they were shown for 3 seconds each". Plus its still 8 months off. Yeaaaah, it was a pretty weak ending.
Great direct for fire emblem/pikmin/farm fans, I guess.
Let's see:
No Advance Wars 1+2 release date. Oh, and to rub salt in the womb, we get ANOTHER Fire Emblem that we don't need. I guess Three Houses was really bad?
Pretty bad Direct to be honest. Thanks Nintendo, now I can't play game of the year. 😞
The only cool thing was Mario Party 1 to 3, and Pokémon Stadium are being released. But with no Transfer Pak support, my excitement dropped.
Golden Eye is overrated. Where's Ridge Racer or Mischief Makers you cowards!
Mixed bag and poor pacing, but plenty of good stufftoo .
Farming Sim games are a mystery to me. How can anyone have so much time to kill? And do they really sell that well? Ok, Animal Crossing did... ah well I shouldn't bother. Just puzzled. They all look the same and unambitious.
Mostly games that don't appeal to me. I don't love BotW so that is a factor. Probably my highlight was Tunic on Switch, but I kind of see myself getting it on PS5 anyway.
I was drinking the Zelda remake and Metroid Prime Koolaid so my expectations played a major role.
Please don't hate me, but because farming sim/farm RPG's are one of my favourite genres, it was the best direct (like EVER) for me personally. I can see why people would be mad if they don't like those games, but that's me with most directs normally so I feel blessed to have been given so many gold nuggets in such a small space of time.
AWL remake was my personal best moment, I got goosebumps, so much love and nostalgia for that game <3
There are no bad Nintendo Directs, but some are definitely worse than others.
This one was a part of the "some"
Also, 100% argree with Kate, Square REALLY needs to find a new font.
@Nanami_Ataraxi No one has any right to hate you for liking farming sims. Gaming is for everyone
@GrailUK
Aww thankyou! That's so kind of you to say
I was a bit apprehensive to post since a lot of people weren't best pleased because there were rather a lot of them :S
I'm sure they will get lucky next time!
I really loved the Zelda blow-out, all 20 seconds of it.
Hate Kirby and Bayonetta. no new Mario, Zelda or DK. No fzero or star fox. Fire emblem was destroyed by the horrific three houses, so I hope engage goes back to 3DS quality.
I just want Metroid prime trilogy. I don’t even care if it’s not remastered.
If we can’t have that - can we please atleast get fish in a barrel kaching kaching ports like dark souls 2, Batman Arkham trilogy, metal gear etc.
Please Nintendo, be lazy in the right ways. Port old stuff like GBA, not farming crap and JRPG anime crap
I tried Resident Evil Village cloud demo. It is unplayable with 1GB internet connection...
@wishmylove
The switch is not able to run RE VII or VIII natively ?
But why ?
