I saw video the day after it came out with a Switch 2 having a bunch of scratches already from the dock, so I went out that day and both a screen protector. The screen is so nice that I'm actually excited to play handheld, and I want that screen scratch free.
At first, I was a little underwhelmed and disappointed, but now I'm really enjoying myself. Some of the P Switches are really good challenges, and I am getting much better at the new mechanics. They absolutely need to add some features to help track things - markers, stamps, zoom in on the map, etc. It could use a bit more variety too.
I have not played anything on my Switch since the direct, BUT...
I have been picking up a few games on sale and waiting until the Switch 2 to start playing them. Even if the performance isn't improved, at least the screen should be nicer for portable gaming.
OoT is my all-time favorite game, so I understand preferring a game for the sake of nostalgia. I can understand people liking BotW for being so unique and new. However, TotK is undoubtedly a better game. It's bigger, with much more to explore, much better and more varied enemies, so much more to do, better challenges, and a significantly better story. It's not perfect, but it's a far superior game.
With item fusing, Master Mode would have been much more accessible in this game when compared to BotW. I always like the arena battles or multiple "floors" of enemies to fight. I know we have arenas already in TotK, but let's be honest, they are way too easy. I mean, the only challenge is the lynel arena, and even that is easy if you go in prepared. I LOVED the Trial of the Sword in BoTW, so something like that would be nice too. In fact, Eventide Island in BotW was my probably my favorite part of the game. I would love something else like that.
Does it actually give you a number for completion %? I'll have to check. I did what I consider to be 100%, but it's probably around 80-90%. I completed the story (obviously), completed every shrine, activated every lightroot, collected every piece of armor and upgraded most of it, and I have full health/stamina. I collected enough korok seeds to unlock all inventory slots.
I tapped out on collecting every korok seed, upgrading every piece of armor completely (I'll never get enough dragon parts or star fragments), and completing every single side quest. I played about 180 hours. Every second of it was absolutely awesome, but I can't ever picture myself doing it again.
The problem with the Divine Beasts were they all seemed similar, with nothing unique either in appearance or music or bosses, AND they were a slogfest with all of the moving parts of the beasts.
The dungeons/temples in TOTK so far are amazing. I beat two. I thought the fire temple was perfect. There were puzzles to solve, but you could circumvent the whole thing and figure out alternate ways to solve each challenge. You do get a new ability (kind of), but it's not required for anything else in the game (although it makes like easier). The unique appearance and music add to the atmosphere, and the bosses so far have been amazing. They're a HUGE improvement.
Obviously, we don't like paying more, but with that said, I get it. Inflation has made everything MUCH more expensive in this world, including the cost of running a business. Costs were already through the roof. It only makes sense for companies to do this. Factor in Zelda setting record sales in the first 3 days even with the price hike, and this is expected.
Why is it that a game that will be one of the biggest games ever (by some previewers accounts bigger than Elden Ring) is under 20gb when MOST PS5/Xbox Series games are over 50gb or even over 100gb in some cases? Maybe these other companies need to figure their sh*t out and stop wasting digital space...those hard drives ain't cheap.
I truly loved the Wii U/3DS era. The biggest problem during that time was a severe lack of Wii U games. What was there, however, was mostly quality. With that said, it might have to be the Switch era since it's everything the Wii U was and so much more. I loved the NES/SNES/GameCube eras. If we're including portables, it would probably be GameCube/GBA. N64 and Wii were my two least favorites, although each system had some great, memorable games. OoT is still my all-time favorite game, and it's on my least favorite Nintendo system ever.
Mario is clearly going up the stairs. His right leg is bent, and he is stepping up to the step. However, the shadows are deceiving. They clearly make it look like he's going down. Just bad artwork
Without any of my own personal biases, I feel like these should get in:
Zelda Ocarina of Time Ms. Pac-Man Candy Crush Dance Dance Revolution Maybe...Resident Evil
It's hard to deny the popularity and innovation of those games. I feel like the others don't really compare. Assassin's Creed may have spawned a huge AAA franchise, but the original game was the weakest of the bunch.
But how is Assassin's Creed eligible the same year as Ocarina of Time?
It's a new Metroid game. Of course it's going to be $60. When they're charging $60 for an HD remaster of a Wii game, I would expect a full priced new game.
With that said, as much as I was excited for the Switch to combine portable and console games (and devs) into one place, I knew we were going to lose out on the $40 portable games. Games like A Link Between Worlds and Metroid 2: Samus Returns were not "B tier" games. They were just priced according to the going rate of portable games. Link's Awakening HD and this game should be thought of like portable games...although that's never going to happen.
The first Ninja Gaiden was one of my favorite action games from that generation. I've played it through 4-5 times. I think I played 2 & 3 one time each. I don't think I really want to play through these again anytime soon.
16/16. They were all easy because I'm about to finish it after playing through again. I was 99% sure of the shrine one and the location not in BOTW. Everything else was a piece of cake.
I haven't tried it myself, but my thought is you can probably get infinite coins if you do the infinite 1up trick on 3-1. Then again, that would take nearly 5,000 seconds, so that doesn't seem likely.
I still put in at least 1-2 hours a day. If I get bored, I just move onto something else. I find that I still have a lot that I want to do, but the prospect of clearing out areas and terraforming is so daunting, that I don't want to do it unless I have a lot of time on my hands.
Here's hoping Super Mario 3d World makes it in the rumored Mario Anniversary repeat later this year, or at least a port would be welcomed. Also, give us Wind Waker HD on the Switch. I would gladly pay full price again for another Zelda re-release.
A whole article just to tell people they can buy cards at Amazon? If you're going to pay full price, you might as well just buy directly from Nintendo. It's easier.
There are websites and stores that run sales occasionally. Best Buy is one. Target had a deal a few weeks ago where you would receive a Target gift card. That's what I hoped this article was going to talk about.
I don't get all the hate for Zelda 2. That was always one of my favorite games as a kid, and I still play it without save states at least once a year. I will concede that the end is very difficult, but if you save up all of the extra lives for a final attempt, it's not that bad. I usually end up winning with one or two lives left over.
I wonder if you can use it to purchase the same game twice. My kids are going to want Mario Maker as well. It would be nice to save $20 on that.
EDIT - Ooh, I just saw someone mention Animal Crossing. That would be another game worth a digital purchase, only because it would save me the trouble of swapping carts all of the time.
@Damo So maybe Splatoon 2 was a bad example, but my point holds true. You only posted about it because new content is being released. You find it weird that Nintendo supports an already release game for free, but they're getting free press on a year old game that would've been entirely forgotten by journalists without a reason to go back.
I actually take offense to this article. Specifically, video game journalists/reviewers/bloggers should be the LAST people talking. You guys are always looking to the next thing. A huge game comes out, you review it, and then you're posting previews about the next big thing. You hardly talk about the game that just came out. You never post about the game that came out last year. When was the last Arms or Splatoon article you posted? The only time you talk about them is when Nintendo releases extra content.
Instead of blaming capitalism or the consumer, how about you guys take a good hard look at yourselves.
If I start up my digital game on another Switch, does it share save data? My kids have their own Switch. If I log onto their system, can they play my games without it screwing up the save data on my system?
I am actually pretty happy about the family plan. I have 3 boys. We currently own two switches in the house (1 for me, 1 for them), so I'll save a lot of money with this.
I wish I can say the same. I had to send my Switch pro controller in after 7 months when it just stopped working properly. They originally charged me $50. I had to complain and speak to a supervisor to get a bit of a discount because I was a few weeks out of warranty.
Stardew Valley at #1 in the West? I knee people liked it, but I'm surprised to see it so high up the list. I buy a lot of eshop titles, but I haven't tried that one yet. It looks a bit boring to me. There are some great games missing too like Ittle Dew 2, Axiom Verge, and Golf Story.
I got an NES for Christmas in 1988 with Mario 2. That was the best present ever because my mom had no money and we had just moved. So when I got an NES from Santa, it made me believe in Santa for a few extra years. I also got a SNES for Christmas in 92 (I think) with Zelda. That is a close second since Zelda was so awesome.
I can't help but think there is a lot of honeymoon love out there for SMO. I don't even think it's in my top 5 Mario games, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Ask this question again a year from now to see how people really feel after that new game smell rubs off.
I have been looking for an excuse to pick up Shovel Knight again on Switch this time. 20% off is better than nothing. Axiom Verge is amazing, but I already own it on PS4. I might double dip if the price is cut in half.
How about adding NES support to it too? If there is enough space, and if it is possible, I would love to have all NES and SNES games on one machine, playable on my HDTV.
