You can't even agree with yourself in this...review? You start off by saying the game isn't all bad and it even impresses in some regards, but then you end with calling it "a very bad game." It may not be the best game ever made, but it is certainly not bad.
You're playing a 15 year old game for the first time. Most of the early 3D games did not age terribly well. I would argue that Mario 64 aged way worse than Sunshine. Look at most of the 3D platformers from the PS2/GameCube era, and you will see the camera was the main problem back then. I mean, most PS1/N64 platformers are practically unplayable today. Sunshine, with all of it's flaws, is still a very well made and well polished game for it's time.
It's easy to blame Nintendo for this. I mean, we all knew 32gb of internal memory was a joke. However, if Nintendo can make Breath of the Wild a 13gb download, what possible excuse could 2K have for a basketball game? If they are unable or unwilling to compress their game, they should have to pay for the extra large memory card. Of course that would just reconfirm the idea that Nintendo is too difficult to work with. So let's just screw the consumer!
@drewber2635 I respectably disagree. I can complain about something that is free when it affects a game that is $59.99. The fact is that Nintendo took a step backwards with their online system and STILL can't catch up to Microsoft from 2007. The 360 came with a headset, friend lists (where you could actually talk to your friends), cross game communication, and online chat. The chat part was hidden behind a pay wall, but the rest was included for free. Nintendo can't get voice chat right 10 years later, and it affects a game that, as you put it, is online multplayer based.
About split screen, Mario Kart splits the screen in 4, which is ridiculously small when portable, but it works great on my HDTV. I don't think split screen is asking too much for a multiplayer game ESPECIALLY when it's the Switches #1 selling point. Nintendo promotes "couch co-op" more than anyone else. The main selling feature of the Switch is instant multiplayer. And then they don't include it at all. I can't play this game with anyone in my house unless I buy multiple Switches and multiple copies of Splatoon 2.
It's the exact opposite of the headline. It shows off how out of touch Nintendo is. I know one other person with a Switch, and we're both adults. We're not about to get together during our lunch breaks to play Splatoon. I would love to play this with my kids (who love Splatoon 1), but I'm not about to buy a second Switch and a second copy of this game anytime soon. The lack of couch co-op has been a major issue for me with this game.
I know review scores are subjective, which is why many reviewers argue to get rid of them, but I respectfully disagree with your score on this one. This is practically a re-release of Splatoon 1 with a few minor improvements. However, it's what is missing that is the problem. The online chat is abysmal. It is an embarrassment that in 2017, Nintendo still can't figure out online at least to the level of Microsoft of 2007. Add to that the lack of couch co-op (unless you have multiple Switches and multiple copies of the same game), and this is inexcusable. The Switch has been touted as a couch co-op system. The #1 selling point has been how it comes with 2 controllers out of the box. Even the Wii U version had an offline multiplayer mode (even though it stunk). If we can play 4 player Mario Kart on one screen, why can't we at least have 2 player split screen for this game? Considering that this is basically the same thing as a 2 year old game with even less functionality, I would think NL's rating would have to go down instead of giving it a perfect 10.
I'm tired of companies giving me ultimatums and holding future releases over my head. They have it backwards. We're the ones with the power. Hey Capcom, put out a solid product at a decent price and THEN I will gladly hand over my hard earned money.
This video doesn't show what's better though. I mean, obviously the third tier is the better boost. But you have to take the build up time into consideration. Is it better to do two tier 2 boosts or 1 tier 3 boost? Like on the Waterpark in the long section where the water moves...you can easily do two tier 2 boosts there.
@Anti-Matter That's not the reason at all. "Hardcore" Mario Kart players (if there is even such a thing) are annoyed because auto-steering is on by default. I turned it off immediately but have already had 3-4 times where something weird happened and I discovered that auto-steering was on again. I think this is an awesome feature...that should be available in the options.
Wow. This list is horrible. Big Blue as #1 has got to be a joke, right? And Baby Park is clearly the worst level in the entire Mario Kart series. Electrodome, Thwomp Ruins, Cloudtop Cruise, Sunshine Airport, Toad Harbor, Wild Woods, Superbell Parkway, Tick-Tock Clock, Rainbow Road, and Bowser's Castle are all better. Alex, just because the levels are too hard for you does not mean they are no good (love you Alex).
This My Nintendo program has been a complete failure and waste of time, especially after Club Nintendo (which was great). They either need to get rid of this waste of a program or get their act together. This is actually an insult to Nintendo customers.
Why does the Switch version appear to have purposefully added motion blurring when you're driving? Starting around 10:20 in the video, you can see it's pretty obvious.
I love the open world, but I miss the traditional dungeons/temples. Make a sequel to this game using the same engine and same open world, but have more traditional temples with more intense combat.
I don't understand why anyone would ever back anything on KickStarter. It seems like more and more that we keep hearing about these developers backing out of promises and cancelling projects. Why would anyone give them money when you're not even guaranteed to get anything in return. I'll just wait until the game comes out and decide then whether or not to give them my hard earned money...I'm happy this is coming to Switch though.
Based on the way they're talking about it, I think the green tunic may actually be important to the story. Like, maybe the green tunic from the legendary hero of time is on display and Link needs to do something to earn it, like the master sword in other games. Or they could just be acting vague for the sake of driving everyone crazy.
I'll echo most of the comments here. I couldn't care less about web browsing on a console. That's why my phone and ipad are for. I fully expect for the Switch to eventually have most of the media apps that have become staples of media devices though (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Youtube, Vudu, just to name a few). Honestly though, I don't care because I have them on 10+ devices already.
@gcunit "I strongly disagree with this notion that some games are 'portable' games and some games are 'home' games. I like gaming, and the more places and more conveniently I can do it, the better. I was just looking for Wii U games for my kids for Christmas and thought, hey maybe they would like Mario & Sonic 2016 Olympics. Low and behold, it's sold out everywhere, Nintendo doesn't make it anymore, and it's going for $300+ on Ebay. Why spend millions making a game and then release 2-3 per store and discontinue it right away? With next to zero new Wii u games in 2016, why wouldn't they at least support the few that they did put out? We're talking 6 months here. 6 months later, and this game is "rare". It's unbelievable that Nintendo keeps screwing up demand over and over and over again. It's to the point that I check every day to see when Switch pre-orders go up, because I know it will be hard to get on day 1.
For the record, we were originally supposed to be playing Zelda Wii U in 2015 (which nobody including my grandmother believed). Then we were going to have it Fall of this year. I agree. While these may look cool, they don't do anything except change the color/skin. I hope to see joy cons that actually change the game play. Give us a GameCube option for the Smash fanatics. Give us a NES or SNES model to play our VC games with. While I'm not into Yo-Kai-Watch, I think the mock-up with the spinner was a really cool idea. At the very least, give us one with a true D-Pad for VC games.
@gcunit I agree, but thankfully, this world looks promising. There is always something going on, whether it's a camp of bad guys, secrets, overworld bosses (!), or one of the 100+ hidden grottos to explore. I like that they seem to be more than just caves with a chest.
All of this talk about Wii U backwards compatibility is premature. I read this as sort of like Wii VC games on Wii U. There are features on Wii U that you don't get with your Wii VC games. The same may hold true for Wii U games remade on NX. There may be a unique interface (portable play maybe) that only works with games designed for NX. Maybe you can still play Smash at home in Wii U mode, but if you want to take advantage of portable play, you need the NX version. It could also be a way of extending the lives of these internet heavy Wii U games that would die out otherwise.
How many people looked up Ninja Five-O only to gawk at it's ridiculous asking price? I used to own that one, and it is fantastic. I have to agree with so many people commenting on this list however. I am not a Pokemon fan, but how can that and Golden Sun be omitted from the list? I think Mario 3 could have come off the list considering it's just a port. Chu Chu Rocket and possibly even WarioWare could have come off as well.
Also, I've gotten into Advance Wars thanks to Wii U. I LOVE that series now. I'm glad to see it make the list.
I still prefer to have physical releases. I like the collector aspect and I prefer to buy used when possible to save money. I can buy a used Wii U game for usually around 50% less or better than the going eShop rate. No incentives for this program will change my mind on this.
With all due respect to the NL writers, I think Wind Waker in the top spot is ridiculous. It's a solid game, but the sailing mechanic sucks (HD improved this but it's still not fun) and 4 dungeons is just weak. And you guys dismiss Twilight Princess almost mocking the readers in their choice. Twilight Princess is an incredible game with some faults (baron landscape, wolf link sections). I had a blast playing TP after the ho-hum WW. I knew that's just my personal opinion, but don't mock TP just because you guys didn't like it.
Ocarina was and will always be my #1. It is the reason I went back to video games, so it's probably the main reason why I still play. It might not be technically impressive anymore, but no game has ever come close for me in giving me that pure elation I had throughout that entire game. I don't thini anything well ever top it for me.
I got this for my daughter for Christmas. She watches all these shows, so I have inadvertently heard all of these songs. I'll probably make a fool of myself dancing with her.
Where is Lego City Undercover? That game was #1 for me until Mario Kart 8 and all the DLC that followed. My list:
1. Mario Kart 8 2. Lego City Undercover (and I don't like Lego games usually) 3. Super Mario 3D World 4. Super Mario Maker 5. Splatoon 6. Zelda Wind Waker HD 7. Pikmin 3 8. Donkey Kong Country Returns 9. New Super Mario Bros U 10. Bayonetta 2
That's leaving off some pretty amazing games, but these are my favorite so far.
Oh man, I love my Wii U. It is currently my favorite system. I love the gamepad, and I love the pro controller. I have gotten a ton of use out of it between the 1st party games and all of the amazing eshop offerings. My biggest problem has been the lack of 3rd party support. I own a PS4 out of necessity because there are too many games that don't come out on Wii U. I will be getting an Xbone for the same reason in the near future. Still, the Wii U games that have come out have been amazing. I would love to see more support, but for what it is, I absolutely love it.
I was just thinking that this game would have made sense as a first Mario game on Atari 7800 or something. It seems like SMB was such a huge jump up from Atari games. This seems like a game that would've made more sense if it came out before the NES.
I don't get who this movie is marketed towards. I'm a gamer that grew up in the 80s amd i used to live Adam Sandler, but I couldn't care less about this. The majority of women won't be interested. Most kids have no idea who Pac-Man or Q-Bert are, and the movie is rated PG-13. I just don't get it.
This system has now been featured on every single video game website that I frequent, so it's safe to say that millions of people are new aware of it. If it was fake, making so many people aware of it would be a huge mistake. If he sold it and it was discovered to be fake, he would be tracked down very easily. Additionally, he would already be trying to sell it, not looking for a power source. And why wouldn't he just fake a power source? It would be easy to fake a power source and fake a title screen. I have no doubt that this is real.

Re: Feature: Reflecting On Three Years With The Wii U - Part One
Oh man, I love my Wii U. It is currently my favorite system. I love the gamepad, and I love the pro controller. I have gotten a ton of use out of it between the 1st party games and all of the amazing eshop offerings. My biggest problem has been the lack of 3rd party support. I own a PS4 out of necessity because there are too many games that don't come out on Wii U. I will be getting an Xbone for the same reason in the near future. Still, the Wii U games that have come out have been amazing. I would love to see more support, but for what it is, I absolutely love it.
Re: Parent Trap: Oft-Forgotten Wii U Features That Matter To Families
@GLA Yoshi's Island is up there, although it's the GBA version. Apparently there is some issue with emulating the SNES game.
Re: Beenox Won't Be Working on Spider-Man Games Anymore
Shattered Dimensions was a pretty solid game. I prefer the open world Spidey games, but for level based, it was pretty fun.
Re: Random: Someone Loved Super Mario Bros. Special Enough to Recreate it in Super Mario Maker
I was just thinking that this game would have made sense as a first Mario game on Atari 7800 or something. It seems like SMB was such a huge jump up from Atari games. This seems like a game that would've made more sense if it came out before the NES.
Re: Nintendo Confirms Super Mario Maker Console Bundle and Key Release Dates for North America and Europe
Is there an announcement for the Special Edition Mario Maker with amiibo?
Re: Donkey Kong Nearly Missed Out On Pixels Stardom
I don't get who this movie is marketed towards. I'm a gamer that grew up in the 80s amd i used to live Adam Sandler, but I couldn't care less about this. The majority of women won't be interested. Most kids have no idea who Pac-Man or Q-Bert are, and the movie is rated PG-13. I just don't get it.
Re: The Man Who Found The SNES PlayStation Thinks It Will Probably Be Sold
This system has now been featured on every single video game website that I frequent, so it's safe to say that millions of people are new aware of it. If it was fake, making so many people aware of it would be a huge mistake. If he sold it and it was discovered to be fake, he would be tracked down very easily. Additionally, he would already be trying to sell it, not looking for a power source. And why wouldn't he just fake a power source? It would be easy to fake a power source and fake a title screen. I have no doubt that this is real.
