Re: Hyperkin Shows Off Working Version Of Its Supa Retron HD SNES Clone

bolt05

@Damo got to agree with lemonjelly. The need to own the original carts makes a massive difference. The general non-enthusiast populace doesn't own an extensive collection of SNES carts to utilise with a clone console. For this reason alone the SNES mini has far greater mass market appeal. Clearly different products. One requires assumed ownership of games. One is a standalone device.

Re: Hyperkin Shows Off Working Version Of Its Supa Retron HD SNES Clone

bolt05

@Ardisan Snes mini is an emulator with a theoretically fixed number of games.

Retron HD SNES is a SNES hardware clone (a poor one at that).

Totally different product as you must own original SNES cartridges to use the retron.

Literally anyone who pays ~$80 USD for thsi thing is better off putting that money down on an original SNES or SFC and using it with an s-video cable. The picture will be better as long as your tv supports S-video and unfortunately most new led tvs dont. But older LCD's usually do, as do CRTs.

No one has sold a 240p upscaler sub $100 and had it be any good. This thing ill be no exception. You get what you pay for.

Re: FIFA 18 Will Cost Less On The Nintendo Switch In Australia

bolt05

Woohoo, finally we can get a good deal!!! Im totally buying this from target or big w, they always outsell EBGames. I have NFI why anyone ever buys from EB except for pre-orders of things like snes minis that will never touch an in-store shelf.

This is just good news. Im definitely picking up Fifa on release because of this.

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

bolt05

@BionicDodo I think in general everyone here loves Nintendo so they can get a little wound up be well intentioned. But it's a conflicted relationship at times when they make a Nintendo move and shoot themselves in the foot, the fans here have a hard time working out what it all means.

This is pretty much the best online discussion forum for Nintendo fanatics and it's really good that it exists. Kudos to Nintendo life, even if their reporting is sometimes a little inherently biased, but again that's kind of the point of Nintendo life... We all love that no so little Japanese company.

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

bolt05

@electrolite77 I agree mate. I like to think that all the 3ds Devs out there will now shift focus to switch and other 3rd parties will bring whatever they can to switch to hit it as another viable platform to sell games. Nintendo has an astounding handheld legacy and the switch is shaping up to be phenomenal as it blurs the lines a little, even if somewhat constricted.

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

bolt05

@electrolite77 You didn't get my point. It's most limiting factor is its portability. This design goal restricted every single aspect of its development and software development including the fundamental economics of the software, and its final form factor. The result is essentially no different to a sony PSP with the only exception - that you can use a bluetooth controller. I choose to define it as a handheld with tv out, any comment relating to its "hybrid" nature is marketing spin in my opinion. I don't mind if you disagree, but I don't encourage you injure your head on your table

Now don't confuse my opinion with any kind of dislike, I LOVE the switch and LOVE what it is, but I reckon it's fundamentally hindered by its requirement to remain portable. It is a modernised or souped up PSP, perhaps even best described a gaming tablet with HDMI out.

Alex Olney's comment way up above is right though, these arguments are probably only headache inducing and academic at best. Nintendo itself claims its a hybrid and they're therefore competing against Sony and MS in the home console space. Fair enough, whatever, i'm not going to lose sleep over it, just have a different opinion.

Re: L.A. Noire Is The Latest Game To Fall Foul Of The Dreaded "Switch Tax"

bolt05

Typo... Larger THAN normal.
ROM Carts are better media than discs hands down. $10 is trivial for the value you're getting.

A lot of people are going to wind up complaining about the cost of all the micro SD cards they inevitably end up buying for all their digital downloads on switch. Just buy the carts wherever possible for large games (5gb plus perhaps) and use one micro SD for updates, saves and day 1 patches and I bet you, like me, will come out miles ahead in a few years time...

Re: Miyamoto and Other Developers Discuss Star Fox 2 and the SNES

bolt05

@SLIGEACH_EIRE agreed big time on the 3 RPGs they should have included!
I have a pre ordered SNES mini because they were available for pre order from ebgames here (Australia) for 3 whole days. I guess it pays to be in a smaller population with less Nintendo fanatics around to compete.

Re: Jools Watsham Highlights Low Chicken Wiggle Sales, Confirms Upcoming Discount

bolt05

Maybe the game isn't very good. Having said that I think it's overpriced and especially for old hardware nobody cares about anymore. I think I saw it was about $22 in launch day and I saw trailers and reviews and thought nah pass.

The only 3ds games I am waiting for now are Metroid, Mario and Luigi superstar saga remake, and maybe etrian odyssey v. I'm not loading in more eshop titles that money is going into switch games now.

Re: Nintendo Switch OS Version 3.0.2 Is Now Live

bolt05

I'm not paying for any online service until I know what the devil it actually entails! What's the hold up? If it's voiceless, Friendless Splatoon 2 battles I'm seriously not paying for it. And where's my SNES and gamecube VC already? I want to give them money to play the gamecube fire emblem on the bus already!

Re: Editorial: Mandatory Memory Cards for Switch Retail Games is a Messy Solution

bolt05

A very good and fair article. I must be a minority Wii u owner as I never had need for an external HDD. But I have a few eshop titles maybe 10 or so and I'm fairly sure my 32gb inbuilt HDD is close to full so I can see the problem.

The switch's small memory size is probably due to start being a problem now it's been out for 6 months but I only bought a 64gb micro SD and I have barely used any of it yet with about 4 or 5 eshop games on it. I prefer to have the games cards for major titles though.

I'm guessing the scale of the NBA game means it needs space to extract and install to just like ps4 games? It sucks for gamers but memory management bseems to be a fact of life these days for any device. My mobile phone is useless without a micro SD.

Re: First Impressions: Finding Our Way in Lost Sphear

bolt05

This looks great, really looking forward to it. I bought setsuna but it was pretty bland and I can't force myself to play it anymore. The combat system was very generic. One thing that concerns me already is the "piano orchestral score"... Not again... Ugh. So bland. I'm not a big fan of piano work to be honest and RPGs need to have good music. Solo piano just doesn't cut it and adds to the tediousness of setsuna for me anyway. Edit - I understand it's not solo piano now. Sounds good.

This game could be a lot better so glad to see some early positive feedback at least.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Is Getting a Season Pass

bolt05

@MasterWario your second statement makes sense. But I disagree. I think the market is flooded with games and they are priced to sell accordingly. Supply and demand. There have never been more games on the market than has the last 10 yrs with the rise of Indies and govt. Grants and Kickstarter like funding to boost them.

So many AAA games get a price drop after 1 month when they fail to sell to the extent that indie game shops can lose money by selling AAA games. There's a great article over on polygon about this. Couple of months old now.

Re: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Is Getting a Season Pass

bolt05

It's a tactical game but is it an rpg? I'm not so sure.

Just because it will have a season pass doesn't mean I'm ever going to buy it. They can make a full game and release it on day 1. Beyond that I couldn't care less. This practice has to be stamped out along with pre-orders.

Re: Editorial: Is This a Golden Era of Gaming? Absolutely

bolt05

@Windy Yeah well said.

I worry that the switch will be seen as too expensive by the general public once the glut of Nintendo enthusiasts has been satiated. I don't see them continuing to sell 4-5 mill per year after the first 12 months. I hope i'm wrong. I have seen lots of mums and dads in the local stores say omg no you cant have that its nearly $500 for a gaming tablet. Sure thats my evidence, but this I worry about. The games are cheaper on other platforms and the nintendo exclusives are dear on a dear console. Most teenagers downright laugh and dismiss the switch as a kids toy, "why would I want to enter a contest to win a nintendo, ewww" I heard a kid about 15 say at ebgames just yesterday. They were giving away 10 as a promotion if you bought something in their 1 day sale.

Re: Editorial: Is This a Golden Era of Gaming? Absolutely

bolt05

Well, depends how you define golden age. It's highly personal. For me it was the 90's. Also I can't help but LOL every time I see someone say that Zelda BOTW is the best game of all time... omg no it isn't! Not even close. It's good but that's a big call, and I see a lot of emptiness and repetition in the game that I can't get past as a contender for "greatest of all time". It would be hard to bestow that mantle on any one game, even any one game of a particular genre, just too hard a call to make. So why do it with BOTW... just laughable. Skyrim is probably a better game of the genre, and what about Witcher 3? I mean, come on its not better than those.

There certainly are more games on the market across more platforms today but that's not necessarily a good thing given a whole load of those games are total rubbish.

I think games are still expensive given they are discretionary items for which disposable income is required to purchase. The Switch certainly is expensive.

I wouldn't call the last 5 yrs a golden age in terms of AAA games either... Barely any of these games interest me, they are mostly FPS or car racing or GTA style games, not my style at all.

The glory days of 16-bit RPG's, and PC strategy games that's where it's at for me.

Re: Show Off Your 16-Bit Style With This Adorable SNES Classic Hoodie

bolt05

@bimmy-lee oh man I loled. Also we definitely always confused Bimmy and Jimmy as kids too lol. Double dragon 3 on nes is the best double dragon by the way. Punishingly hard but we could clock it without losing anyone and with our dad playing which was a handicap believe me! We had to do the jumps for him in Egypt though.
