Re: Soapbox: I'm Tired Of Ports And Remakes - Where Are All Nintendo's New Ideas?

betterthanvegas

While I'm annoyed by the amount of ports to new games I do recognize the importance of ports. Not only are they relatively safe investments, they are also really useful for training new talent. If you have a bunch of new developers the best way to get them used to game development and the office structure is to have them work on a port. It's just at a certain point it starts to feel just plain stupid. Look at The Last of Us. It was ported to the PS4 & 5 and they didn't really change much. I don't want to see that within a few years of every games' release for Nintendo. Like if they do release a "Switch Pro" we shouldn't see a Breath Of The Wild Ultra HD Edition. That would just be infuriating.

Re: Memory Pak: Taking My First Starter Pokémon All The Way To The Elite Four

betterthanvegas

First game I played was Yellow. While Pikachu is your starter and you get all the other starters, I chose Pidgey as my Pokemon. I beat every gym with Pidgey, I solo'd the Elite for with Pidgeot, and by the time I was done playing, my Pidgeot was level 95. I forsook all other Pokemon for Pidgey, and the only thing I regret is that I lent the game to someone to do what I now know is the Missingno glitch, and after getting the school involved to have them give me my game back, they erased my save data. Such a tragic end to Pidgeot the Unbreakable. Fast forward to Pokemon Silver, I then knew about Pokemon types and basic strategies. And I was immediately enthralled by the fact that Pidgey, once again, was a Pokemon I could play the whole game with. This time however I knew the value of a Pokemon team and when to use each Pokemon for full effect. I started with Cyndaquil and Pidgey, and by the end of the game I had a full team that had different types and functions. Then I beat the game and for the first time ever, which I will wager is what most kids then felt, I experienced nostalgia. The place I had been, making Pidgeot a monster birb, I was back there. And it was entirely thanks to one man, one man whom I can never thank, least not enough. So thank you Iwata, for letting me experience nostalgia for the first time, and thank you for doing what you did for Nintendo and the gaming community as a whole. Pokemon Silver/Gold/Crystal and Soul Silver/Heart Gold are my favorite games bar none, and are as close to perfect games as we can get, especially when looking at them from a sequel's standpoint.

"Why doesn't it look like it should be played on my $5000 super computer!? Doesn't anyone understand? I buy games on Nintendo systems for the graphics!"
That's the vibe I'm getting from some people.
Honestly, they look alright. Plus we have 7-9 months for them to add stuff or clean up things. IF by say august or so they still look rough THEN we can really start complaining. Right now we should let them know we feel they could look better but saying they look like garbage now isn't constructive at all.

Re: Get Ready For More Remasters From Activision Blizzard In 2021

betterthanvegas

Personally I'm just waiting to see how Activision ruins Diablo 4 with MTX. Or a season pass where half of the things you get are cosmetics that were in the game originally. Any and all remasters come second to that.

I also don't see CoD coming any time soon cause Activision knows that most Switch owners have at least a basic level of intelligence and won't buy into their MTX schemes. I'd bet that's what happened to Fifa. People refused to buy the MTX packs so EA stopped putting literally any effort into it cause all they'd see was just game sales and that's not good enough any more.

Re: Soapbox: Grinding Is Poor Gameplay Design That Doesn’t Respect Your Time

betterthanvegas

Grinding being good or bad is entirely dependent on the results at the end and the way you grind in game. Look at Disgaea versus Ghost Recon Wildlands. Disgaea has different types of upgrades you can grind that are valuable and and serve purpose. Wildlands literally is full of fluff that does nothing so they can sell "Time Savers." It's an entire content/bloat chart that some games suck at (looking at you "Games as a Service") and others reward you for playing the game a lot.

Re: Video: 13 Great Wii U Games Still Not on Switch

betterthanvegas

Spent 200+ hours on XCX and hard froze my system several times due to equipment choices. Outside of the ending I loved every second of it and would totally sink in another 200 easy. In terms of just gameplay I enjoyed it more than the other 2 Xenoblade games.

Re: A 'Pro' Switch With More Power Might Not Even Be Fully Utilised, Says Industry Veteran

betterthanvegas

When it comes to a "Switch Pro" the bigger issue is getting developers to patch older games to utilize the upgrades. New games can be programed with that in mind but people would want the benefit for games they already own so they don't feel they wasted their money with a New 3DS style upgrade.

With the New 3DS the modding community made it so games would actually use the upgraded processor and for some games it showed. The last Pokemon games would have pretty significant slowdown during double/sky battles. This was fixed with just the games having a little more power on the New 3DS after you turned up the base clock with your homebrew. Which is what I did and I can honestly say it's hard to go back after how smooth it made the games.

For us here I think we're in agreement that if we could have 720/60fps minimum with no drops and less/no pop in we'd be more than happy right? That would warrant an upgrade. And folders/themes.

Re: Physical Version Of Kingdoms of Amalur For Switch Includes The "Full Game" On Cartridge

betterthanvegas

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed this game before it's controversies, (Rhode Island helped fund the game which led to several problems when the studio filed bankruptcy) it is way better than it deserved to be. Kind of like The Warriors.

There's combat depth, a cool story, lots of explorable space, and interesting lore. So long as they don't screw up the port, it should be a wonderful experience for those who decide to try it.

Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield Version 1.3.1 Is Now Live

betterthanvegas

This game as a battle revolution type is solid. As an rpg not so much. The whole idea of exploring the Pokemon world is just that, to explore the world. This game goes from a few wild open spots with only 3-6 pokemon roaming around, to an on the rails experience that's so on the rails, you can't even turn your head to see the story that's supposed to be happening. I want this to be a demo/stopgap to something greater and now that GameFreak is literaly rooming with Nintendo maybe that will be the case. Here's to hoping they don't find a way to screw up the new Pokemon Snap.

Re: 30 Years After Nintendo's "Operation Midnight Shipping" And Console Launches Are Still Fraught With Danger

betterthanvegas

Had a similar situation happen at Walmart when the NES Classic was still being sold. Had to shop for Easter, saw they had 5-6 in electronics, so I asked if they could leave one up front. They did. I finish shopping and ask for the system to pay for it. They say it was already picked up. Turns out some guy watched me ask them to hold it in the front of the store, bought ALL the other ones, then went up front and bought mine. I'm still livid, cause that was going to be a mother's day gift since the original Super Mario Bros is one of her favorite games. And if I ever find out who did it, I'll probably go to jail for the rest of my life.

Re: Epic's Apple Lawsuit Could Have "Significant And Serious Ramifications" For Platform Holders Like Nintendo

betterthanvegas

In all honesty this is a genuinely fascinating case. This was clearly intentional by Epic, Apple for all intents and purposes has a monopoly on their end due to having multiple devices (iPhone, iPod, iPad) but only one place to curate content from, and the long term affects this will have on the gaming industry. And the if 30% now seems high it was because back in the day during cartridge production the console manufacturers covered a lot of the production costs and wanted to regain money if the game didn't sell well cause selling games back then was risky business. The fee was an investment into the game that may or not be returned. Now with microtransactions it's just bonus money to the platform holder since the fear of failure is no longer on them.

Re: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Director Explains Why Remaster Cut Local Co-Op

betterthanvegas

Reading some of these comments hurt.
So, real quick;
Square Enix made this. NOT Nintendo!
Nintendo probably had nothing to do with Square Enix's design choices.
That lack of wireless co-op does suck. You shouldn't need an internet connection to play this game.
I'm not against people needing their own screen, it's kinda nice on these kinds of games. Playing Diablo 3 locally, on separate Switches is wonderful. Should've been in the game.
Again, SQUARE ENIX! NOT. NINTENDO. Can't stress that enough.
I'll probably wait til it's on sale for 20 or less.

Re: The Team Behind Konami's Classic Suikoden Is Creating A Spiritual Successor

betterthanvegas

Played 3, 4, 5, and Tierkreis. They are really good RPGs and I enjoyed all of them, even 4 which is considered the worst one. Tierkreis was a treat on the DS. The biggest downsides, to me, are there are pretty big variances on usable characters, some are just bad by the end of the game. The hidden units replace other units you could have and change the story for them, usually its sad. And you have to collect EVERY character to get the best ending. Kind of a pain since you can miss some and some have weird recruitment requirements. Still a wonderful RPG franchise.

Re: Talking Point: What Do Abuse Scandals Say About The Smash Bros. Community, And Its Future?

betterthanvegas

2020 has been a terrible year for most people. We in the gaming community have been hit hard, especially in the last month. So many big name gamers have been discovered to have done terrible things. Mini ladd, Lui Calibre, Satellizer are big YouTube/Twitch names and when they were accused it was an eye opener. This sort of behavior can be a part of any group. And while we must stand with the victims we must be wary of people who inevitably/already make false claims. It hurts the real victims and will guaranteeably be used by the abusers as a way to vindicate themselves. We must learn from what we're seeing and better ourselves and our community.

Re: The Super Mario 64 PC Port Just Got A 60fps Patch

betterthanvegas

Love reading the negative comments on here. Seems people forgot Sonic Mania was made the exact same way and that's been the best Sonic game we've had in a decade. And yes, it needs more work. The skybox jumping looked horrendous. These people are doing a good job though. I would love to see them smooth it out and maybe add the DS content to it.

Re: Review: Borderlands Legendary Collection - A Triple-Helping Of Classic FPS Action

betterthanvegas

I've played all the Borderlands games and I'm really excited to see the Switch ports hold up well. And in all honesty, the $50 price for 1, 2, & 1.5, plus all their dlc is amazing. That's $15 a game and a $5 tip. With, given how much time you can put into each game, is more than worth it. Yeah, they are cheaper elsewhere, but the price we're paying is to help support the studio who ported this over. And the reviews show they did a good job.
