Today, 2K has shared a video all about next month's PGA Tour 2K21, giving us an inside look at how state-of-the-art mapping technology is being used to bring real-life courses into the game.
The development team at HB Studios have partnered with Terra Imaging to capture and process detailed aerial drone footage of each course. These drones capture nearly every real-life detail of these intricate courses, right down to just one centimetre of accuracy, and then convert the data to 3D images for HB Studios developers to recreate in-game.
A press release covering the video notes that each course takes HB Studios several months to build. Shaun West, senior producer at the company, says, "Our goal is to make the PGA TOUR 2K21 in-game TPC course recreations as detailed as possible, so it feels like you’re actually playing the course alongside top PGA TOUR pros. To see professionals play these courses on TV, and then watch each come to life as playable courses within the game, is an incredibly cool process to see."
The 15 licensed TPC courses you'll find in-game include:
- Atlantic Beach Country Club;
- Copperhead Course;
- East Lake Golf Club;
- Quail Hollow Club;
- Riviera Country Club;
- TPC Boston;
- TPC Deere Run;
- TPC Louisiana;
- TPC River Highlands;
- TPC San Antonio;
- TPC Sawgrass;
- TPC Scottsdale;
- TPC Southwind;
- TPC Summerlin;
- TPC Twin Cities.
Remember, PGA Tour 2K21 launches on Switch on 21st August. Will you be teeing off next month? Let us know with a comment below.

Golf games tend to spoil a good walk through Hyrule Field
Despite the limited number of courses and golfers, still very interested in the game. Still oddly not up in the Switch Eshop yet though weirdly.
2K sports have been having a hard time recently. I hope this works out for them so they can get back into the baseball and hockey game.
I remember swinging the old five iron with my high school friend Kurt after school. He would always win, but is there ever really a loser when you have two best buds just shooting Triple Bogies until the sun goes down? This impressive mapping in the newest PGA might be as close as I can get to reliving those halcyon days, thanks for the article it's peaked my interest!
I so miss the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games from the Wii era. The Motion Control Plus was unbelievably realistic. Draw and fade were applied exactly as in real life. Putting a four-footer felt like putting a four-footer, not like putting an eight-footer.
@doctorhino they deserve to be having a hard time after all the crap they've pulled with the NBA 2K gambling simulator.
I want to know how this thing is going to look on the Switch. Its all fine telling us how this technology is going to create these amazing courses for the PS4/Xbox One and next generation consoles, but what about the Switch version? How will it look and run on that?
I will get this one if there are no micro transactions.
If they keep the control scheme they've used in their previous games, which I presume they will, then no, I won't be picking it up. It requires too precision in the analog stick. The courses look cool, though.
I haven't played a modern, serious golf sim in awhile. I may need to pick this one up when it inevitably goes on a deep sale.
@Nedtendo piqued !!
@FragRed it'll look just fine. If you want it to look like a movie then go with the new Xbox.
At least golf as a video game doesn't really need a good frame rate lol.
Will wait for reviews. If it looks good though the question will be where to buy, Nintendo or Stadia. I'm assuming Switch will have motion controls with the joy con for taking shots. That might "swing" it for me.
@Dang69 I was thinking more about ruining the WWE franchise for good and needing to start from scratch. NBA 2K games are super playable outside of the micros.
I haven't ever bought a micro for the game and have enjoyed multiple years without issue. Though I don't play the single player career mode, just seasons. New one was free on psplus this month.
@Burning_Spear
So true but ive hope for this one better then nothing.
If it had motions controls like Tiger Woods on the Wii, I would definitely get it. But, without them, I will probably pass or wait for a price cut.
@dcast2 plus 1 yeah if this has motion controls day one for me
I still play Tiger Woods 2005 so until they make the games like that again, or the 2007 kind, I don't care.
If it's not a new "Mario Golf" golf game, I don't care!
Preordered this one digitally a few weeks ago already (through the 2K site). Can't wait for it tbh.
I will, unless the game is pants.
@Andgiles No his name was Kurt
Since we have joycons and better motion sensing tech since the Wii...I was disc golf as an option on the Switch version!!!
Is this a poor substitute for Mario Golf?
@BetterThanVegas Yeah, I still pull out Tiger Woods 04 on occasion, that one was brilliant. 13 with the Masters wasn’t bad at all either, the graphics are beautiful, especially the lighting but I’m still disappointed that the mode where you play Tiger’s life didn’t include an adultery minigame like Hot Coffee.
I’ll be picking this up
As long as they have decent player animations like celebrations and reactions this time instead of blankly looking at the hole when the ball goes in
@doctorhino I hope this is as glitchy as WWE 2K20.
@TheCatCountry
EA's not involved with this one, but Take Two isn't much better...
@ConsumingCinema in the previous games in the series (this is basically a re-badged Golf Club game by HB studios), there was an active course creation community with courses being forwards compatible e.g. course created in Golf Club 2 worked in Golf Club 2019) - literally 1000s of new courses and unofficial recreations. They've confirmed that this creation feature is in this version on other consoles / pc but NOT on switch... but no word on whether you can still IMPORT courses from the community cross platform.
@JimmySpades Did you try Golf Club 2019? I found the controls to be far more forgiving than the previous games (played on Xbox and PC using an Xbox controller).
@doctorhino The devs, HB studios, have a decent history with golf games on other platforms and this is really a rebadged Golf Club series game (HB actually picked up the PGA licence for golf club 2019 on other platforms). My concern is their control scheme is a bit divisive / tricky to master so people may pick this up expecting a simple 3 click system as opposed to the analog stick based system the previous Golf Club games employed.
I never enjoyed any of the previous Golf Club games, something about them didn't sit right with me. And the user interface is the worst of any golf game I've played. So this one would have to fix a lot to get me to buy it.
I'm really itching for a golf game, especially after repeatedly playing Golf in 51 Worldwide Games, which is excellent, but stupidly brief.
If the game is complete on cartridge, I'll consider a purchase. Otherwise, they can get prodded with something sharp and pointy where the sun don't shine.
@nicols oh yeah since they got the pga license for their last game. I like those, played the golf club and 2 and thought they were maybe a bit bland but overall played similar to the late tiger woods games. Those were pretty hard as well, tiger woods 13 with the move was punishing.
@nicols I have Golf Club 2 on PS4, which I see (which really means I looked it up on Wikipedia because I was curious) was the last title before 2K took over the series, so if they've made the control more forgiving I'd be much more willing to give it a chance. And more importantly, more willing to pay to give it a chance. But if I want to get pissed off by my swing I'll just play for real.
This seems like some incredible technology that will be wasted on an overpriced game full of microtransactions.
@JimmySpades "But if I want to get pissed off by my swing I'll just play for real."
😂
@JimmySpades Golf Club 2019 was an odd one... the 2K deal was only announced like a few days before launch so I suspect the majority of the development happened without 2Ks direct involvement.
re the controls, if you choose the beginners club set the straightness of the 'flick' of the right stick felt more lenient compared to golf club 2. All I can say is I tried GC 2 and didn't really get on with it either but sunk many pleasant hours into 2019 with the beginners club set / easier greens (it's still a challenge - but felt much more down to me and my choice of shots / estimates of power and slopes etc than just random variations in stick movement completely ruining my shot).
Of course, all this is assuming that (1) they've kept the same general control scheme which I think is likely and (2) that it translates well / has been tweaked for the switch controllers (be it joycons or the pro controller)...
The last golf game I played was Mario Golf on the 3ds. That's not counting Golf Story mind you. The last sim golf game I played was Tiger Woods on the Wii. It feels far too long since I've played a real golf game. If only Nintendo would bring Mario Golf to the Switch I would be there day one. Some of my favorite gaming moments were on the N64 and Cube version. I really wish they would go back to that for a future game......
I’ll never understand the appeal for sports games... if I wanted to play a sport, I’d play it in real life.
Boggles the mind people pay for this tripe...
@TheCatCountry eeyugh, Golf! 🤮 haha.
@TheCatCountry
It's possible that Take Two bought the PGA tour rights from EA, but it's not likely that they're involved before that.
Take Two is pretty much as bad as EA, especially when it comes to basketball and Wrestling.
@TheCatCountry seriously. It’s one of the most tedious, pretentious and ridiculous games out there. I’ll never understand it in the slightest. It’s also a huge drain on precious resources, water and local living space...
@TheCatCountry despicable isn’t it? Bleh.
@TheCatCountry -vomits- the whole Damn thing is despicable.
How about a Mario Golf, at last, Nintendo?
This game is due for release in 2 days and it still isn't listed ANYWHERE on the Nintendo USA eshop. What gives??
