The 3DS may have turned 10 recently after fading from Nintendo's business strategy, but the console isn't quite ready to die yet, it would seem.
French publisher PixelHeart has just announced that Andro Dunos 2 – which is also coming to Switch – is getting a physical release on the 3DS, too.
As well as that, it's also coming to the Sega Dreamcast, another dead console which PixelHeart has supported quite robustly over the past few years.
Andro Dunos 2 is the sequel to a Neo Geo shmup from the early '90s. You can pre-order the 3DS version direct from PixelHeart, but be aware that the site is currently experiencing technical difficulties, presumably due to unexpected demand. European and North American variants are available.

Gotta be a April 1 fools joke...
😮..Oh wow cool nice.
God, I miss the 3DS. They easily could have gotten another couple of years out of it by focusing on games that really needed the dual screens and fully took advantage of the hardware.
The Dreamcast bit is even stranger!
If it has actual 3D I would buy it, otherwise I will stick to Switch.
Dreamcast version for me the original on the Neo geo is a great game
Looks like the physical version is PAL/Euro only.
@mike_intv
Not quite.
All other physical versions of Andro Dunos II are EU region, but the 3DS version is being released in both EU and US format.
Edit: double checked and they're releasing in a variety of regions for a variety of formats, such as JP Dreamcast.
3ds is brand new compared to the consoles games are still releasing on these days, its great to see these older systems still supported though
I hope there will be an eshop release as the website to order this is not working very well.
Edit:I will get the switch version.
@SwitchForce why? Developers, especially indie devs, have been releasing games for many discontinued and retro systems over the years. We're still getting games for the NES, SNES, Genesis, Atari and Dreamcast, to name a few. The 3DS may not be manufactured anymore, but it still has a large base, the system's are still sought after and it still has an active eShop. Personally, I'd definitely pick it up for Switch, 3DS AND Dreamcast, just for the different experiences.
Wow, lovely. The website is not working very well though!
@Tsusasi You do know Nintendo no longer does repair for 3DS. Making it now if there no one to fix them is also problematic. And I have 14 of these units from those with collectors covers.
@arekdougy I mean, there were at least five new games for the Dreamcast last year alone...
@SwitchForce not sure how that effects an indie dev's decision, when there are so many working units. As far as repairs, it's pretty amazing how many videos are out there and how readily available parts appear to be. I'm actually going to try my hand at a repair or two. A few years from now, parts may become harder to come by. On the other hand, people are still repairing, recapping and modding Game Gear. Plenty of time and room to sell games. Especially with digital distribution still available.
Whaaaaaaat?!?! This is super rad!
Just sold my 3DS though! But yeah, what a great release!
NINJA APPROVED
I might be tempted to buy it for the dreamcast.
@HIGHscores85 agreed! More ports that actually use the 3ds effect! 3ds is my favorite play to play shovel knight for this feature. It looks sooo great on those pixel art games. Loved all the 3D sega releases and I’d love if indie studios kept em coming!
If it supports 3D I'll buy it!!
I managed to get through the checkout process. You can use the coupon NEWPIXEL (first time customers) to get 15% off. I didn't even know this company. Apparently they ship from France. Was nice to have lower shipping costs compared to my LRG orders, as I am in the Netherlands 😁 I ordered two Switch games along with it (Golden Force and Finding Teddy 2) and only paid a little over 90 euros with the coupon.
If you're not a first time customer of Pixelheart's, they have a coupon code "pixelheartlive" which is valid until end of Sunday 28th March.
@Tsusasi New SNES games?? Like what?
@BloodNinja You just sold your 3DS?
NINJA DISAPPROVED
Bring it to snes as well please!!!
@Monkeido I know! But I'm moving and needed funding, plus it sold for around triple what I got it for so it was purely out of necessity! Still, I will bow my head in shame!
@nessisonett I love my 3DS, but I'm gonna have to disagree. The last few major releases on the system tanked because pretty much the entire Nintendo fanbase migrated over to the Switch after 2017.
@Chrysologus
Besides rereleases here are some:

Edit:
Especially the Megadrive and Dreamcast are getting much love with new Releases.
The Gameboy seems to het nowadays also a bit more focused, since there are more tools.
@Ralizah I dunno, Samus Returns and Fire Emblem Echoes didn’t do terrible figures. The problem with the Switch is that there isn’t room for the smaller exclusives to shine as they’re getting drowned out by 20FPS blurry ports of PS4 games or hentai games. The price of entry to play a dedicated video game console this generation is also about £200 for a Switch Lite and then games are pricier too. That’s a lot more than before when you could pick up a 3DS and a good few games for that price. There are whole series which have basically died like Layton and Etrian Odyssey and I don’t really see them coming back.
Preordered! Love the 3DS and this looks great!
@nessisonett I feel you. I think it's also a crime that we never got Virtual Console or remakes for some of the better Virtual Boy games when the 3DS was a perfect fit.
If I can't play it in actual 3D. I really couldn't care less.
@Tsusasi Fair enough, I'm not informed!! Cool.
Just want the eshop download, so hopefully that’s in order as well
Even though i think its smarter that Nintendo is focusing on one system, i still miss the 3DS and the smaller scale unique games it had.
While I'm not huge into the genre I'm really feeling the music. Might get the game just for that.
You know what'd be crazy? If Nint discontinued the 3ds repair service to release the 3DS all over again?
I love shooters (particularly 16-32 bit era) so this was a no brainer. Nice little surprise!
Sold! Now if it supports stereoscopic 3D, I'm in on 3DS.
@nessisonett
I feel the opposite TBH. Dual screens, 240p resolution, and glassesless 3D all felt exhausted by the time Switch released.
Not to mention from a business standpoint, 3DS was selling 6-7 million units annually by 2015 onward, which wasn't very good.
Is it bad if I’d RATHER play this in 3DS?
I’m buying this !!
Seeing the Dreamcast get a version makes me feel happy. Granted, I haven't played mine in ten years or so, but it's great to see folx still supporting indie development this deep.
I wonder what this'll be worth on the second-hand market...
I'm getting the 3DS version of course, which will be the better version, as always.
Awesome!! The first one for the Neo Geo was great.
This will be the only horizontal shmup for the 3DS, apart from Steel Empire, which doesn't count since it was a remake of a Mega Drive game.
By the way, there are no vertical shmups on the 3DS either, apart from Karous which doesn't count because it's a port of a Dreamcast game.
It looks like it doesn't utilize many of the 3DS features, or even the performance of the 3DS. I would love to see the new 3D Daruis games on 3DS, with actual 3D.
Problems with the site fixed and orders can be made normally. Also Pixel heart has just confirm that the game will use stereoscopic 3d, and that is great to receive a side scrolling shooter for 3ds with stereoscopic 3d in 2021!!
Please support pixel heart and buy andro dunos II as pixel heart leave an open window to continue the support for 3ds in the future!!
Wow. That’s great. At this stage of the systems life I totally would’ve expected them to drop the game without 3D (aka be happy you’re getting it at all). I agree completely with the poster that Nintendo botched it with Virtual Boy games on 3DS. Yeah the system was a failure and released at the wrong time, burying its legacy on the one console it could have been resurrected on seemed trite. Of course Nintendo’s few 3D classic releases seemed to follow little rhyme or reason as few of the games were really suited for stereoscopic 3D. Thank you Sega for at least stepping up with their own 3D classics line.
The site finally started working, got my 3DS preorder down. This will be a good title to round out my 3DS collection, I can’t think of any other shoot ‘em ups other that that Japanese NES game.
@Guile got my preorder, I don’t think there are any other shoot em ups on the 3ds.
Good ole Pixelheart. I got the Shmup collection for Wii U from them, it wasn't too bad. Took them an awful long time to deliver the patch though. Not sure i will bother with this one though.
I’m in on the 3DS version, I mean why not?
Good job Mans.
