@PinderSchloss Really? The story, characters and gameplay was mediocore in Sea of Stars. However, it had the most beautiful pixel graphics of the year.
I think I might be able to look past the poor performance of this game, but then there is yet another aspect holding me back from purchasing it: the DLC that holds quality of life features behind a paywall.
The hilarious thing is that Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is no where near the top 10 games people are playing this weekend because 1) the team saw Pokemon SV and said "challenge accepted", ultimately creating a game that looks and performs worse 2) Barely any marketing, not even sending out review codes to game websites 3) Limited distribution in the West
But hey, now they can complain again that DQM doesn't sell in the West and they can spend the next 10 years not localizing any DQM games.
I was initially hyped for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, but with the crappy demo performance, the lack of professional reviews, the mixed reception from people having played it and a lack of proper distribution in game shops in my country makes me think I'll skip this one.
They should've really developed this properly, with decent marketing and better physical distribution and that would've probably resulted in a lot of success and sales.
@AmplifyMJ why have they chosen not to review it? That doesn’t make any sense since it’s a big title and I’m sure people would love to know the verdict on the Switch title. The only explanation I can think of is that they have been given money not to publish a bad review.
What always surprises me about the people working at Nintendo Life is that they play games the whole week long for work, and then it's weekend and they PLAY EVEN MORE GAMES.
Always makes me think they don't have any other interests or hobbies than gaming.
@Chocobo_Shepherd how does it prove ScarVio should run way better? Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince demo isn't exactly a flawless experience, lol. Plus the graphics look worse than Scarlet & Violet, even.
@Jireland92 no, a remaster updates the graphics while keeping the game design the same. A remake takes the original and updates the graphics and game design, for example, the FFVII remakes. Super Mario RPG is a remaster.
@LadyCharlie same, the $60 USD price for what is essentially a remaster with some prettier graphics makes this a skip for me. A remake would be what Square Enix is doing with their FFVII remakes.
@Darkred401 I never understand why you guys keep hoping for some fix. There is nothing broken according to the executives and consumers. The game sold millions and will sell millions more in the DLCs.
Star Ocean looks like it’ll be my last purchase of the year for the Nintendo switch. I’ll have some time to work through my backlog since there doesn’t seem to be any heavy hitters in December coming out.
@MisstressBrea I don't mean to hurt your feelings but on the DragonQuest subreddit this is what we're talking about as our main negative. They seem to have taken 3DS graphics and said "good enough" instead of giving us DQXI graphics and environments.
Hopefully the duplication glitches still exist with this update because this game is the grindiest I’ve played in the past years if you want to upgrade equipment. That’s why it’s only an 8/10 in my book. Modern singleplayer games shouldn’t have equipment locked behind that level of grind. Bleh.
I'd love to start this series but it's so daunting that first I would have to play multiple 50-60 hour JRPGs to catch up. I don't have 300-400 hours available for that sadly.
I thought this looked very uninspired. Bland environments with some dragon quest monster models popped in. Pokemon SV looks miles ahead of whatever this is.
@Aya-chan "A lot of people here are voicing a wish to return to form" That's called the vocal minority.
@SuperWarioWorld "which is clearly not where the series was always headed" According to Eiji Aonuma, this is where the series was always headed. You can disagree, but that doesn't make it true.
It's funny that the complainers here like @Chaotic_Neutral and @Johnvlachos and @Aya-chan don't understand that this is what the Zelda series always aspired to be. They used to be limited by technical constraints, whereas now they are able to build Zelda games with freedom like they always intended in their vision. This is the real Zelda as they always wanted to make.
You can always go back and replay the old, more constrained Zelda games that you prefer.
@MajorTom Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was the most fun Pokemon game of the past decade with the best story so far. If not for some technical issues, it would've been a 10. Hence, a 7 is a very fair score.
@MajorTom No lol, they are just honest about calling a bad game bad. Other review sites have 0-10 scores but in practice it's only 6-10 to not make people salty.
I'm happy to see that Nintendo Life does not shy away from giving bad games bad review scores. This is why Nintendo Life remains as my #1 trusted gaming site.
@Jcdbengals you should just play what you want to play the most next. Whether that’s Live A Live or Chained Echoes or Octopath Traveler 2. Some of you take the concept like a backlog too serious and often sound like you’re working, trudging through some arbitrary backlog instead of playing what you really want to play.
@Lizuka So Nintendo employees shouldn't get paid fairly for their work, and you want games to remain as cheap as possible despite inflation over multiple years? You capitalist pig.

Re: Review: Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (Switch) - A Near-Royal Return For The Addictive Monster-Catching Spin-Off
@Erigen That's one of the main reasons why I'm not buying the full game. Paywalling quality of life features is sh*ty and not a practice I support.

Re: Round Up: The First Impressions Of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince Are In
@jobvd that’s because the game is not very good and they want to hide it as long as possible.

Re: Review: Star Ocean: The Second Story R - One Of The Very Best RPGs Of The Year
I'm getting this over Super Mario RPG. Seems way higher quality and more bang for the buck. Plus I never played Star Ocean 2 on PSX.
Re: Where To Pre-Order Super Mario RPG On Switch
I'm gonna buy 'Star Ocean The Second Story R' over this. The box art and price solidified my choice.

@DogDetective they have announced 3 sets of day 1 DLC (it's on the square enix website, not sure if I can link to it in the comments)
Re: Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince Has "One Save Slot Per Switch Account"
First a bland looking world, then day 1 greedy DLC, now this haha. I wonder when they start announcing good stuff about this game.

Re: Random: Elden Ring Mod Brings Pokémon Scarlet And Violet To The Lands Between

Pokemon never used the word 'taming'. Maybe you're confusing it with monster hunter stories 2?
And the difficulty of Pokemon games is such a non-argument. You can make it as difficult as you want based on your play style.
Re: Nintendo Introduces Lucina In Fire Emblem Engage
@steely_pete
Alongside with 50 old characters for NoStAlGiA that totally don’t belong there. Lame.
Re: Nintendo Introduces Lucina In Fire Emblem Engage
It’s super lame that this game has all ReTuRnInG characters. Feels more like a gacha game at this point.
I would’ve been interested if this game focuses on new characters instead of cashing in on nostalgia.
