Get excited JRPG fans, Atlus has just released a brand new trailer for the upcoming Switch exclusive Shin Megami Tensei V. Unfortunately, we can't show the English trailer here on Nintendo Life due to the age restrictions in place, so you'll have to head over to YouTube to watch it.
As explained in the official PR, this new Bethel Trailer depicts the battle between the light and dark to dictate the fate of the world. Throughout the game, the protagonist (controlled by yourself) will be required to make choices and sacrifices, as they fight your way through a demon-infested wasteland.
Here's some additional backstory:
When a grisly murder scene in modern-day Tokyo blocks our protagonist’s walk home, an unplanned detour leaves him buried and unconscious. He awakens in a new Tokyo, a wasteland ravaged by apocalypse now called Da’at...but before bloodthirsty demons can claim his life, a savior emerges, and they unite to become a mighty being neither human nor demon: a Nahobino.
With newfound power, the protagonist ventures through Da’at, an enigmatic realm filled with mythical deities and demonic tyrants in constant conflict for survival. Searching for answers, the protagonist must forge his own path in a battle between light and dark to dictate the fate of the world.
Pre-orders for the game are also now available, including a special launch edition for $59.99 USD. Shin Megami Tensei V launches on 12th November 2021. What do you think of the latest trailer? Leave your thoughts down below.

They're showing a lot more of the school stuff than I anticipated we were getting.
I know people roll their eyes when the comparison is made but honestly it looks like we might be getting a bit of Persona in our mainline SMT game, or at least some social system like the Three Houses support function that also will probably have some direct effect on stuff like alignments or our "bonds" to the other major human characters since we see a lot of them conversing with Protagonist/Nahobino. The interior of the school is especially giving me major Yasogami High vibes
I'm probably not going to watch this trailer honestly, since I don't want to know absolutely everything before playing the game myself.
This is the kind of quality I expected from the Pokemon team when Pokemon was announced for Switch, honestly.
I don't hate or even dislike the games we did get but looking at this I really wonder what could have been.
@Varkster Considering the amount of SMT converts that have resulted from the current state of Pokemon I can see that sentiment being super common lol
Doesn't help that the D/P remake and this are coming out like exactly a week apart
The amount of games I want to buy (and play) this upcoming half year is getting a bit out of control….
this game is secretly raidou kuzunoha 3
@TheFrenchiestFry Shin Megami Tensei IV started in Mikado but didn't stay there for that long. I suspect the same will hold true in V as well.
@Vincent294 Thing is it's already been confirmed you can actually go between your world and the alternate Tokyo in both your regular and Nahobino forms respectively so I almost wonder if your real world stuff can influence your time spent in Da'at and how that affects what ending you get for example since there seems to be a more even balance, especially given it looks like they got rid of dedicated dungeons and even a traditional world map in favor of just one giant free roam area with demons and different regions and the like
SMT IV did start in your kingdom with you and the other Samurai, but even when you went to other areas/dungeons your team usually followed you around since it was part of the story and your pursuit of the Black Samurai
Fantastic. Really liking all of these trailers and the daily demon showcases. Can't wait for this game.
Guess School isn’t just “cutscene only”. Also Raidou.
Atlus is doing a hell of a job constantly keeping news about this game flowing now. New demons every day. A new trailer every few weeks.
Also, between the apparent school life stuff and the total lack of evidence of proper dungeons, this going is seriously going to disillusion the hardcore fans who hold Nocturne on a pedestal, lol. The world map would seem to be gone as well.
It's about time, though. Like Nintendo, Atlus is sometimes too conservative about evolving their franchises. SMT V is one of the first games they've made that hasn't felt like it could have released on the PS2 with some visual downgrades.
@Varkster tbf Atlus' development teams seem to have the freedom to just go dark for years at a time and focus on a project or two.
So is the Nahobino form the protag’s drag alter ego? Should be called Hee-hoe.
the game adds a new class feature where I you don't return to the normal tokyo on time and get to class you get instantly expelled, giving you a game over
@Ralizah Oh, I'm sure a lot of it has to do with deadlines and having a hundred different projects all at the same time, but this just looks a lot more ambitious than anything GameFreak has made for the Switch thus far and it's a shame because I don't doubt GameFreak is a very talented company.
Based the returning faces from IV Apocalypse I'm holding out hope that Dagda will return, even if only in a minor form. Dagda was one of the few bright spots in Apocalypse for me, he really deserves to return, regularly, even.
This game looks like one helluva good time! November... sigh...
@Varkster It's up there with Capcom's MH games as one of the most ambitious third party projects on the system. People would go nuts if the new Pokemon games looked half as good as this does.
Maybe it's a good sign that a different developer was put in charge of creating the newest Pokemon remake, in that regard.
Looking forward for this one!
Since we can't have P5 i wouldn't mind more social links/dating elements
I am so excited for Shin Megami Tensei 5 but its the middle of August and we still haven't heard any of the English dub, I'm starting to get a bit worried
The social link/dating elements from P5 is what i disliked the most about the game. I did for them “right” for the tropies along the way but I just really liked the combat, art and story.
Kinda boring to have EVERY female fall for you by just listening to them or them (female and male) telling you how good of a friend you are by just saying logical things.
its a shame they only made 5 copies of the premium edition
@piecez Come on, they made at least 10.
I'm looking forward to this game. Been playing the Nocturne on and off, so I'm slowly getting into this series after being a Persona fan. It looks well designed.
@Strumpan wow, they actually just came back in stock on Nintendo uk, I was able to pre order!
@piecez Really? Congratulations! (I'm going for the regular edition myself)
