Update [Thu 12th Aug, 2021 09:30 BST]: Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild is now streaming on Netflix.
Original story [Fri 16th Jul, 2021 02:55 BST]: If the live-action Monster Hunter movie starring Milla Jovovich didn't interest you, perhaps Netflix's 3D anime film will.
Introducing Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild - arriving on 12th August. It's a story about a young man named Aiden who one day finds out his village is under the threat from an Elder Dragon. He sets out on a journey alongside Julius - a member of the Hunter's Guild, in hope of finding a way to save his village.
It's been an exciting few weeks for the Monster Hunter series - with this announcement and the release of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin on the Switch last week. On the Netflix front, there have also been reports that it will potentially offer video games on its subscription service within the next year.

That trailer was very jarringly edited
The animation doesn't look that great honestly.. feels pretty cheap. However, I have no doubts that this will at least be better than that live action movie that came out... even if the dialogue sounds a bit bad and some of the voices for the characters sound off.
@TheFrenchiestFry "Jarringly edited" or not...THIS is what that MH movie should have been!! It already looks leagues better than what came out before it (as far as films are concerned). As Monster Hunter fans, THIS is what we want to see: Hunters...hunting monsters...crafting their way to bigger and better weapons and armor...facing down ferocious Elder Dragons in their quest to keep their village safe.
Just be better than the dragon quest film
I haven't watched the trailer, but the poster reminds me of PS2 boxart for whatever reason.
These characters look like could have been ripped straight out of Shrek.
Ugh, this visually looks like DreamWorks circa 2005...
@Ralizah LOL, beat me to it by seconds!
Ya I haven't even seen the trailer in the pox art made me think this was made in SFM.
@Chowdaire Believe it or not, I was also gonna post that so you guys take first and second place
How To Kill Your Dragon.
Ok So I watched it, and it doesn't look to bad animated but I have to agree with the other people here, that it does look like a dreamworks movie, BUT it looks miles better then the Live action one so I will be taking a watch, Not that I think I will hate it, not at all actually, just could look a bit better.
Also we need to wake @JaxonH up!
@Snatcher It honestly looks a bit like the CGI cutscene that plays in Monster Hunter 4. The one where the hunters are hunting Tigrex.
@VoidofLight True I do remember seeing those, maybe thats what they were going for here?
Ya I'm up, I was posting about it in the other threads 😀
It looks amazing. I'm a Monster Hunter fan. This is a MH film that actually stays true to the series, unlike certain movies I know of (cough cough)
I'm there for it.
Today I remembered that there was a Monster Hunter live-action movie.
@Chowdaire Yeah. It's about on-par with Over the Hedge.
As for the other DreamWorks film of 2005 (though it's a co-production with UK's Aardman), Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is one of the best films of that year and it looks really great, and it's 3D but not CGI (it's claymation with some CGI effects such as the bunnies whenever they are in the BunVac 6000).
The Monster Hunter anime is more comparable to Studio Ghibli's Earwig and the Witch, another low-budget CGI anime film, though they have different styles.
Monster Hunter looks like a video game cutscene while Earwig looks like 3D CGI trying to simultaneously imitate Ghibli's 2D animation and Aardman's claymation at the same time.
At least the terminology seems to be right. Konchu, velociprey, elder dragons, hunters being in tune with nature.
It gets a thumbs up from me, so far.
That looks absolutely dreadful. They could have at least used an art style from the games, and not this ugly ass Western RPG crap that ages like milk.
@JaxonH right there with you, MH fan too, and this movie looks fun and action packed, exactly as MH is!
Rise and stories 2 have better character models, but it does look like an enjoyable ride.
Hm, not really excited. Looks like another generic coming of age show with unnecessary slapstick and bad jokes, similar to some Star Wars animations, but uglier.
I hope, I am wrong…
It looks like a (low) budget animated TV show.
But yeah, I'll watch it sometime. But no hype from me.
@Diogmites that's a low bar! What a waste that film was. They spent half the time showing humans fighting, and on the weird horror-gore insect cave part. I was fine with the idea of a "real human" sent to the MH realm to explain it to the audience, but it barely has any actual monster fights, the whole film is pretty much in that desert with the Narscyllas, and then they treat Rathalos as the toughest monster ever. Just when it gets going, and they enter a more lush realm, and the raining mountain area, they go back to a desert again, then the film ends. It's only worth seeing for the Palico cameo and about 2 minutes total of actual people vs monsters with big swords.
Dont really like the art style a bit to clean and smooth like early 3d animation why not just do it in the same style as the cut scenes in the current games a bit more grit to them less smooth and clean
This looks like very bad custscenes. I LOVE MH, but will give this a pass, and since it's on Netflix, I wouldn't watch it anyways.
@VoidofLight Yes I thought this is a cut scene from a Playstation version. But hey what makes this kids get into the IP right?
This looks incredibly cheesy. I'm down 😎
@VoidofLight That's partly because the characters are right out of Monster Hunter 4. It's the Ace Commander and his party, and Aiden is the plucky guy that was always with him.
And our beloved Guildmarm has a name now btw: Sophia.
@vanYth The reason this is a coming of age story is, from what I can gather, is that this film is depicted an interpretation of how Aiden (AKA The Excitable A-Lister) joined Julius (The Ace Commander) 's party.
In short, unlike the Anderson film, this film is actually depicted a piece of actual Monster Hunter lore.
@MegaVel91 no, Aiden is from Monster Hunter World, not 4.
@VoidofLight Aiden didn’t have a name till the end of iceborne. He was known as the excitable ace cadet from mh 4.
@Desmon308 Huh. I didn't actually know that. That's pretty interesting honestly.
Time to see how much I will hate this movie.
Cheap and nasty CGI from 1993.
I'm only about half way into the movie, its that bad.
Will give it a watch. Cant be worse than the live action movie was and im easily pleased.
@Toy_Link the trailer looks like a PS2 cut-scene too, maybe that what they were going for?
(For some misguided reason).
I’ll stick to Castlevania
3D <> CG
Well at least I don't have to look for my 3D glasses.
Haven't watched the trailer but the pic looks cheap so I can guess this is a straight to video budget. I know it's just NF but they can do better, the Troll Hunters Titans movie - scheduled for tonight after the Mets double header - looks way better than this. DreamWorks Dragons tv show looked like this season 1 but it was near movie quality by the end, improving every few seasons.
Will I watch it? Probably. After 5 minutes or so hopefully won't notice how bad the graphics are.
Might be worth a look, but the uncanny valley-ness looks strong with this one.
the animation looks off and the jokes are cringy af
I had no idea Capcom let Naughty Dog make an MH game. I'll wait for reviews.
If you can't do it right, why even do it?
Well, we know none of the budget went to logo design. It looks like they paid pizza to a high school kid using MS Paint for the first time.
Capcom needs to stop with their CG animated movies, especially after releasing games like RE2 Remake, RE3 Remake, and DMC 5. They kinda shot themselves in the foot with the RE Engine, which renders people closer to photo-real; it kinda makes their CG movies obsolete.
Well at least the poster looks absolutely horrid...
If this is better then the live action movie....good god.
This is not anime.
I feel as though Monster Hunter would work better as a Series with multiple 20-30 min episodes that way they could focus on smaller plot points, and they could have each episode have the Hunter(s) fight only one or two monsters and focus solely on them.
