Today marks Donkey Kong's 40th anniversary, with the original game hitting Japanese arcades back on 9th July 1981. To celebrate the occasion, ex-Rare staffer Steve Mayles – now of Playtonic Games – has shared a lovely piece of new artwork featuring our favourite ape duo.
You can see the full piece for yourself in Steve's tweet below; it features both DK and Diddy hurtling along a minecart track, no doubt on their way to hunt down Kong pieces, grab bananas, and put an end to King K. Rool's evil doings.
Perfect.
While Mayles might be best known to some as the creator of Banjo-Kazooie's Banjo and Kazooie, his work on the original Donkey Kong Country titles is right up there with the very best in his painfully impressive portfolio. He's also responsible for the creation of King K. Rool – back when the character was brought into the world of HD for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he revealed to us that, in his mind, "K.Rool couldn’t have come back with a bigger bang."
How will you be celebrating DK's 40th today? Do you have the time to boot up an old classic? Let us know in the comments below.

I really want a new Donkey Kong Country game! Tropical Freeze was fantastic!
At least someone remembers...

DK DONKEY KONG!
Wow Donkey kongs 40th and apparently Nintendo doesn't care. Where's the new DK country game that was rumored right along with that ultra powered high resolution 4K upgraded switch? Oh right, it was all poppycock.
Wow, wait… he created B&K??? Awesome
Sometimes I feel like Nintendo only care about celebrating the big two: Mario and Zelda. I wish they didn't neglect their other series, even if the celebrations are small. At this point I would even take a Donkey Kong Collection with 64, Country Returns, and if we're truly blessed, Jungle Beat.
@Zeldafan79 @Varkster
Bah, don't know why there should be some kind of celebration just because it's this day. That Nintendo doesn't care? They cared enough to create the damn thing. I'd much rather take proper games any day, any year, above a perfunctory pat on the back on a particular date.
Moreover, it's the 40th anniversary of the arcade Donkey Kong, not Donkey Kong Country. Diddy, minecarts, DK's present design, the Kremlings, etc. weren't in the original. Those all debuted in 1994. If anything, it should be Cranky Kong ranting at the youngsters how much better the original game was.
Today is the anniversary of a game made by Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto. While Rare did excellent games, and DK certainly wouldn't be the same without them, it is inaccurate to celebrate those games today.
Now, don't take me wrong - I love Rare, I love Donkey Kong Country, and I'd love a third DKC from Retro; but sometimes I read opinions that are so self-righteous they make me want to say "get over yourself".
By the way, it is, by extension, the anniversary of the first appearance of Mario (and Pauline, too). They aren't celebrating that either.
Celebrating by continuing my play through of DKCountry 2 for the first time! Wrapped up the theme park world last night.
@Zeldafan79 Believe! The theme park expansion is all but confirmed so I'm fully expecting a DK anniversary direct later in the year. If the Nintendo World announcement happens in isolation then we can start calling BS.
@Stubborn_Monkey
Nintendo didn't have a problem to celebrate Super Mario's 35th anniversary. He changed also a lot these last 35 years, while 35 being a rather awkward anniversary to celebrate.
Donkey Kong on the other hand is turning 40 and is the company's first real global success in the video game business. Not only that, as you point out it contains also the first appearance of video game's most prominent character.
I'd take some love for DK, like an official celebration video on YouTube.
@Stubborn_Monkey
So the fact that the switch still doesn't have a new DK game of any kind doesn't bother you in the slightest? Every Nintendo system thus far since the Nes has had one or two. Even gamecube got jungle beat. Tropical freeze is a wii u game so it doesn't count.
@Zeldafan79
Yes, I can count too. If it was up to me, we'd get new DK games every single year. But there's this little thing called "reality" that doesn't always give us what we want, be it DK-related or not.
@ophone
Nintendo didn't have a problem using Super Mario's 35th anniversary as a marketing ploy to sell products. If this is going to turn into some kind of childish bickering of "Mum and Dad love you more! It should be me! It's not fair!", then count me out, because it's a particulary stupid attitude.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo is well aware of the meaning of this date, as I said before, they created the game. Using it to complain that you aren't getting what you want sounds rather selfish.
I would love a new Mario & Donkey Kong game
@Stubborn_Monkey
Sorry I've been playing videogames for 42 years i forgot what reality is. I think it's something i try to avoid as much as i can so i game to get away from it.
And Nintendo still has to make any kind of celebration. But if Zelda's 35th anniversary is just a remaster and a Game & Watch, I can't say I'm surprised. Just disappointed. But c'mon, we're talking about the 40th Anniversary of the game that saved Nintendo back in 1981, and of a legendary character. Even Mario's true anniversary, also 40th. Why the silence, Nintendo?
I want a new Donkey Kong game with the animation quality of Wario Land Shake It!!!
Rare's redesign of DK did wonders for the brand
Congrats, Donkey Kong!
Happy Anniversary, Donkey!
I'll definitely be playing some of the OG DKC and some Tropical Freeze to celebrate!
Have a blast, DK fans!
Why Nintendo changed Mario's birthday to 1985? Both Mario and Donkey Kong first appeared in 1981 on the Donkey Kong arcade.
@Stubborn_Monkey @victordamazio
For all the games and consoles not on NSO, I am still surprised Nintendo released the DK arcade games as an Arcade Archives.
For those complaining, there already is an easy and legal way to celebrate the original game on Switch! Before this, it was never available in any collection or release, except as a bonus game within DK64.
You don’t have to spend around $1000 for a DK Arcade Cabinet. Just $8 on the eShop.
@Moroboshi876 @Zeldafan79 @Varkster
Also, New Donk City is literally celebrating the original DK game. Go play that level again in Super Mario Odyssey.

"June 2
1941: Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig died at age 37 of a degenerative disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
1981: The Japanese video arcade game 'Donkey Kong' made its U.S. debut.
1990: Groton had a golf course for the first time in 48 years.
1997: Timothy McVeigh was convicted of murder and conspiracy in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people.
2012: Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison after a court convicted him on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that forced him from power."
@Tandy255 Nobody said Nintendo has abandoned the franchise or that there are no means to play the original arcade game on Switch, which I know is there and have already played it earlier to day as my particular hommage to the game. Still happy after a couple of years that despite the legal issues involved the game finally and legally was ported to a console 37 years after its debut on arcade cabinets.
But it's a little strange they didn't even do anything like a nod such as a tweet or a joint celebration with Google, that's all.
@Moroboshi876 This is true. And I wouldn’t turn down a DK99 game. 😬
@Tandy255 Oooh... (Homer Simpson drooling face)
Congrats Donkey Kong And Diddy Kong
Gotta Love Donkey Kong And Diddy Kong
I keep hearing the same ole story about Nintendo not caring about anniversaries, only to have them shortly after confirm something being done to acknowledge them. At what point are we gonna just sit and wait to hear some news before acting as if we know what Nintendo does or doesn't care about?
@Abeedo
If the rumors are true we are getting a game.
I’ve accidentally been playing half a dozen DK games. You ever played Donkey Kong 3? It’s fun!
@blindsquarel I've heard of them, but the same rumours were saying an E3 reveal which didn't happen, so I'd like not to get my hopes up.
I agree it just seems more real than like a Zelda 35 because of how long it has been since a new dk
so sad that Nintendo have not regonized Donkey Kong 40th anniversary.
