Re: Team Behind Wii U Emulator, CEMU, Makes Surprising Progress With Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Urameshi

@shani Took the words right out of my mouth.

The side of the argument that you didn't address though is people taking issue with the legality of all of it. Some people are just obsessed with staying within the confines of the law when it comes to a certain issue but all of them are complete hypocrites (breaking the speed limit, as a small example). For emulation it's fine if individuals abstain - that's their choice. The second they try to impose their opinion on others however is when they start abusing their opinion.

@CartoonDan You are incorrect in your statement. It is both morally and legally a grey area.

Also, as a quick comment, people are misusing the word "wrong" more often than not. "Wrong" in this argument relates to two subjects which people confuse with each other:

Morally wrong
Legally wrong

The two are not interchangeable.

Re: Dolphin Emulator Now Allows Wii Shop Access and Purchases

Morality is a subject closely tied to religion that has no absolute answer. Toss in the subject of an intangible intellectual property and you're going to get a whole slew of answers addressing morality. Everyone that says they're against emulation undoubtedly have double standards (e.g. buying a used game, borrowing a game, entitlement to download a ROM/ISO just because you own the game, recording TV shows or movies off of tv). If abstaining from emulation helps you sleep at night then that's fine, just don't pretend you're "too good for McDonalds" when you indulge in something ignorantly/knowingly "compromising."

Getting to the point, it comes down to the individual in this situation. There is no right or wrong for emulation, only an individual's opinions and how their decisions will impact their mental well-being.

Re: Random: Check Out This Travel Nintendo Switch DIY Dock

@PlywoodStick
...That picture made my day o.o

For "inheriting the cost of the dock" though I meant that the only way to use the DIY shell is to cannibalize the circuit board and ports from the Switch dock, currently requiring one to own an official switch dock (the dock may be extremely overpriced and have practically nothing in it, but as of now there is only one way to get the parts needed and that's through Nintendo's official dock).

Having overlooked jolimon's 5th edit on his reddit page clarifying that the main purpose for his creation is to have a far more portable dock, it's existence seems to make a lot more sense now. I've noticed some people have mentioned that they haven't used their dock at all, so this may be a better way for them to put it to use. Also, it may be impractical now to turn the official dock into a useless hunk of plastic, but a 3rd party of some sort may create and sell the components needed to implement into DIY docks instead.

Also, my "fanboy paranoia" comment was basically just taking a jab at the " ...and only the 'pure and righteous' original Nintendo product is legitimate" part of your post. It just annoyed me that this statement was thrown in there as calling fault with the DIY project doesn't mean that someone holds Nintendo's design as some golden standard either - but I get where you're coming from.

You're right though, heck with how much effort, time, and enthusiasm it takes to get even a small project like this going, power to him if he can make it a success (as well as possibly inspire other projects).

Re: Random: Check Out This Travel Nintendo Switch DIY Dock

@PlywoodStick "Even though it's just a couple chunks of hard plastic, and a small circuit board with Power and A/V ports with an attached USB-C connector... It's like seeing a congregation of Puritans shooting down something new because it doesn't fit their narrow world view."
Careful now, that high horse of yours is walking on stilettos

I think you're overlooking that this DIY project absorbs the resources that the Switch dock uses. It inherits the cost of Nintendo's dock in addition to the cost he will sell the shell for and it takes the 1-step practicality of the Switch dock as it is and completely removes it for the sole purpose of correcting the extremely rare, if existent "scratched screen" problem.

Would this be helpful if it was being sold as a complete dock alternative at a lower price than Nintendo's? Absolutely. Otherwise, is it helpful for anything other than avoiding the screen problem? Not really.

Also be careful with that "fanboy paranoia", just because someone isn't too keen on the design of a DIY project doesn't make them a devout Nintendo fanboy. Nintendo's design most certainly isn't perfect, but when it takes $$ to use an alternative constructive criticism is certainly deserved.

Re: Nintendo Hopes the Switch Can Be A Bridge Between Home Console and Portable

Urameshi

@JaxonH I think that's actually exactly what Nintendo is aiming for the Switch to be used as (they are mostly targeting adults in their advertisements after all). I've seen too many people already say that their Switch is never gonna leave the dock, but when you don't have much time to play games because you have a job it makes the hobby a lot more accessible. They really might hit upon a majorly untapped area of appeal again.

Re: Nintendo Switch Version Of For Honor Out Of The Question Right Now

Urameshi

This isn't a surprise at all. No company is gonna be putting one of their big titles on the switch unless they see the switch being successful. We're lucky to even see a company dipping their toe in at this point with a low production cost title, and it'll most likely be after the holiday season until we potentially see otherwise.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Countdown - Considering the Joy-Con

Urameshi

I'm actually expecting the lack of a dpad to really not matter, even for VC games. I use a moga hero controller on my phone for some older platformers (ones that utilize only four directions) and actually find that I prefer using the joystick instead of the dpad most of the time (for fighter games though I can definitely understand wanting a dpad)

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape

Urameshi

Some people seem to keep trying to legitimize the Switch's weak launch window by saying that it's quite a bit like any other console's launch window. What these people aren't thinking about at all is how much time Nintendo has had a long time to prepare for the Switch's launch. Nintendo started to give up on the Wii U years ago, with a lot of game development being moved to the Switch due to Wii U's failure. Also Zelda may be out for launch, but we were initially promised this game back in 2015 and it's release is purposely being held back for Switch's launch; it's a given that we finally get this game and shouldn't favorably skew one's view of the launch.

The reason everyone is so upset about the launch is because Nintendo has had PLENTY of time to ensure a rock solid launch for the Switch and this is all they have to show for it.

What have they been doing all this time? How is that NOT concerning/frustrating?

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Release Date and Key Games Outlined

Urameshi

There's no way this is true. The Wii U has been dead since the release of Paper Mario: Color Splash Almost nothing has been released for the Wii U since Star Fox Zero. Is it to be believed that after the financial disaster that has been the Wii U the only new worthwhile game they have to show for the Switch's launch is a 3D Mario title? Especially after having Zelda as the entire focal point of this last E3? I don't think so.
