Update:
Deep Silver is publishing this title in Europe, and unlike in North America the pricing of the Switch version is the same between the physical retail and download version - €39.99 & £34.99.
Original Article:
One of the pleasing 'smaller' reveals around the Nintendo Switch in January was confirmation of Puyo Puyo Tetris getting a global release. Versions of the mash-up have been available in Japan for some time, but it's now heading to Nintendo's new system along with the PS4.
SEGA has now confirmed that it's coming to North America on 25th April and Europe on 28th April - on PS4 it's retail only with a $29.99 price in the US, but with the Switch it'll be that price for the download version but a little more - $39.99 - for the 'special retail edition'. As previously confirmed, pre-orders and first-run Switch copies in North America will come with a couple of keychains.
SEGA has also released a new trailer and a breakdown of modes.
Adventure– Single-player mode offers ten unique acts, each with ten stages featuring different characters from the Puyo Puyo and Tetris universes. Each stage contains unique challenges players will need to overcome in order to win and move on!
Multiplayer Arcade – For up to four local players, Multiplayer Arcade offers a wealth of game variants that will bring out players' competitive nature!
- Versus – Players compete head-to-head in either Puyo Puyo or Tetris to fight in the puzzle fight of their life.
- Swap – Players' abilities are put to the ultimate test when they compete on both Puyo Puyo and Tetris boards, which switch back and forth at set intervals.
- Fusion – A true hybrid game where players compete with Puyos and Tetriminos together on the same board, requiring deft, on-the-fly thinking to become victorious.
- Big Bang – It's a race to the finish as players compete against each other to clear unique challenge boards as quickly as possible to win.
- Party – Players compete on Puyo or Tetris boards, but the puzzles feature special items that when activated either help players or harm their opponents.
Online – Players can try their puzzle skills on a global scale by playing any of the multiplayer modes with up to four players online in Puzzle League or Free Play modes
- Puzzle League – Increase player rating, earn ranks and aspire to new leagues in this mode for competitive enthusiasts.
- Free Play – A more casual experience where records aren't kept and players can customize matches with unique settings, and invite their friends to play.
- Replays – Players can save and upload any online matches to show off to their friends, or search other players' replays using the tag and filtering system to see how they tackle matches.
Solo Arcade – Play any of the Multiplayer Arcade modes against the CPU in Battle or Endurance matches, or try single-player challenges:
- Battle – Substitute human players with 1-3 CPU opponents to fight against simultaneously.
- Endurance – Go the distance in a one-on-one gauntlet of never-ending CPU opponents, racking up as many wins as possible.
- Challenge – Forget about the opponents and put skills to the test with Sprint, Marathon and more, like the quirky Tiny Puyo, which shrinks down Puyos to fit even more on the board.
Are you tempted to pick this up on Switch, and will you opt for a download or retail copy?

So it'll be £34.99 retail and £25.99 eShop un UK hopefully.
So it's a Puyo Puyo game, a Tetris game, and a Puyo Puyo X Tetris game?
Sign me up!
I'm hoping this sells well so Sega actually continues with localizing the series.
Oh so the price differential really was because of the keychains.
Why is the 3DS version not coming over? Surely the effort is minimal?
Always liked puzzle games like this
That is based on SEGA's RRP though... once retailers decide their price it'll probably be the same... although that's still an improvement.
That's just as bad as Konami charging $50 for bomberman!! Cmon Sega! It's a simple puzzle game $19.99 retail or download tops!!
@YouSeemFRAZZLED what free?
@BensonUii It seems EU gets it at retail too, but the keyring bonus is specified as NA only.
@ThomasBW84 So the retail price is the same for physical and download for EU? Since it's not a special edition.
Huh, I wanted this anyway but the price makes it way more tempting than other launch window titles.
I'm really excited for the game! Can't wait to get my hands on it!
I seriously cannot wait to get this game, especially since it releases two days after my B-Day. This is probably the very first game I am excited in getting since the Game Cube days. In the meantime, I'm gonna be playing Kirby's Avalanche, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and Puyo Puyo 39 to train up for the bigger meat, all while playing the Rocky training theme
@joey302 Still worth it than 1-2-Switch.
@PipeGuy64Bit Yes. I wanna get my hands on Puyo Puyo Chronicles
Anyone seen a link for UK pre-orders?
Anyone know if you can just play Tetris or Puyo?
Are you all out of your minds!? It's barely more than Tetris and you can get that for FREE on EVERYTHING!
@DoctorOverbuild Don't think there are any and as far as I'm aware Europe isn't getting a retail release.
$40 is a bit of a hard sell for a Tetris game... $30 for digital puts me on the fence. Realistically, I'll have other games to pick up when I get my Switch and I'll probably wait to pick this up later in the year when it's cheaper. Looks like a fun game.
Every great console needs a great Tetris game! Getting Puyo along with Tetris is great! I'll more than likely get this day one.
@SanderEvers Thanks mate. Day one for me as well.
...Hmm, not getting the system at launch, but might think about getting it for this game. Don't think I've ever played the Pop game, though.
@StephenYap3 Same here. Puyo Puyo Chronicles looks so fun and what's keeping me from importing a copy (hooray for Homebrew's region lock bypass) is the fact that it's basically an RPG and playing one where you can't read anything doesn't sound very enjoyable even with a guide.
Man quite a few are turned off for the price. Personally I believe an addictive puzzler crossover has the replay ability (especially with the online multiplayer) to justify the price of admission.
This disturbing trend of making Switch versions of games more expensive than the likes of Xbox One and PS4 versions is not great, and it's exactly the kind of reason why "Nintendo gamers don't buy third party games" (even though this is first party-ish title, I presume). It's good to see the digital version is at least cheaper than the retail copy though, but still not by quite as much as I'd like.
I love Tetris, but what's the Pew Pew thing?
I imagine I'd appreciate a definitive version of Tetris instead, containing every great feature from across all the games.
Wow pricy!
As tempting as the physical edition is, I think I may cancel my preorder to get it digitally just because it seems like the kinda game I'd rather always have on hand, on the system without needing the cart.
I would personally like it if Bomberman R gets the Cheaper for digital download thingy along with a Bomberman keychain or something so it's 50 dollars tag can get some justification.
This is a must have game for switch. I think the price is really cheap. I was expecting this to be at least 50 pounds. This is great.
So the PS4 gets it but no Wii u. Ah I'll just get the free iOS version on the iPad
Wow. A select few here are complaining about the price for a game that has plenty of content? Have they even SEEN what Puyo Puyo Tetris has in store? The amount of content this game has is more than enough to justify its price tag for me.
" Contains mild suggestive themes" - I mean why put them in there?
I'm not too keen on the price though as it's just a rehash of old games most of us have played before, should be cheaper.
When I see the retail version, I can't help but wonder whether the box contains a game card or just a download code like with Sonic Mania. That does look like a game card box, but still...
@NintySnesMan I want this game. I also want a true bubble bobble and rainbow islands sequel 🌈
@impurekind it's a Sega game
@Spanjard I'll ask and see if I can get Euro prices pinned down.
A definite day one download for me,love these games.I don't mind the price as i'm guaranteed to get countless hours of enjoyment from it.I just hope it sells well enough so there's always a decent amount of players online all the time.
Now THIS is going to be interesting.
Oh this is a no brainer. People been complaining about wanting Puyo Puyo for years... years.
This looks like the full spread too, a nice little retail package. Not that Tetris Ultimate nonsense. Same price, infinitely better, way more content, and a special physical release with keychains for $10 more.
Preordered, along with that slick Disgaea 5 Complete Collectors Edition from NIS Online Store, and the Sonic Mania Collector's Edition.
@StephenYap3 Here here, hear hear, hear here, etc. Then again, I also cringe at the thought of entertainment being "content" to be "consumed".
"Lack of content" complaining in multiplayer-focused games seems to miss the point of a fun multiplayer game, though Puyo Puyo Tetris in particular seems a really inappropriate target for such. While racers can have numerous tracks and shooters can allow for fragging with so many weapons on varied battlegrounds, a block-droppin' puzzler is pretty much...a box for dumping blocks. What, is that supposed to have a bunch of different maps too or something?
What's important is the core gameplay's fun factor, and of course being able to play it. Just taking advantage of the system's multiplayer capabilities, it should be a hit anywhere there is local multiplayer to be done, and online is still possible otherwise. A good time to be had anywhere, anytime, regardless of how much "content" it has.
Is the Nintendo Switch price higher because of Nintendo going back to cartridges, like the n64 days where there games were $70 and up compared to Ps1 games just being $40.
As for Puyo Puyo Tetris I will be picking up the Ps4 retail copy for $29.99 and more than likely the ps4 version will have more people to play with online anyways.
@Incarta But I want MY Tetris with an awkward storyline, thank you very much!
Ps4 copy from amazon with amazon prime is $23.99 and the switch copy is $31.99.
@SanderEvers lol. You wouldn't find the same game. This is retail for 30 pounds so you won't find it
@mowerdude I'm sure you know which one to get. The switch obviously no
Pre-order bonuses are US only. Nothing new there then. Also, why can't we get the 3DS version too?!
@SanderEvers go for it. Would of been nice if it was the same price as the PS4 version
Too expensive.
Great !
My shopping list for early May 2017.
(I got salary every date 28)
Puyo Puyo Tetris and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be mine.
This needs to be on the 3ds. Even if just a smaller version. I'm so disappointed that they would bypass 3ds entirely for any Puyo Puyo game. By the way, "Puyo" means Cowlick. Not the most glamorous choice for a game name.
Any news on a retail version - and most importantly, those keychains - coming to the EU?
@UK-Nintendo Only reason it's more expensive is because it's a special edition with the keychains. You're paying $10 for the keychains essentially.
Wild Guns Reloaded (PS4) also had a keychain-bundled retail release as an option.
Looks really fun. But games like this are free 2 play on mobile. People refuse to pay 10$ for Mario Run. They wont pay 40$ for this. We're not in DS era anymore
The announced retail price for Australia is $70!
$70!! (And that's $20 more than the PS4 version)
That's $10 more than AAA 3DS games!! It's even $10 more than "budget" first-party Nintendo games such as Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush. Hell, that's even more than what I had paid for Mario Kart 8, and that game came with a free retail game download![/perspective]
Whoever sets these prices deserves a punch in the face. These sorts of basic puzzle games should be priced at $20 MAX, but I would consider it at $30 or so (I ended up paying $20 for Tetris on 3DS as that was the pricing threshold that I was comfortable with). Though Nintendo themselves weren't much better charging $70 for Tetris DS back in the day (Tetris Party Deluxe was released at a slightly more sensible $50).
As much as I want this, I just can't justify the moronic asking price, especially if they neglect to include the bonus keychains in the Australian release.
Damnit!! Was hope Ng for for this at launch (wishful thinking, I know). That being said I've got two games in April to look forward too now.
@dimi no people don't pay upfront fees, but they are happy to pay 2-3x that retail price on micro transactions.
I'm still all for the upfront cost - yes I do feel like it's slightly more expensive than it should be. That being said, its two great puzzlers in one so I'm in!
Seems fine. I wish more games did that, make the digital release a lil cheaper.
Definitely getting the digital version. I want this bad boy with me anywhere I go.
I hope the price difference for digital vs. physical is an incentive we continue to see on the Switch; It wasn't present at all for the Wii U. I almost exclusively buy physical copies, but for a smaller game like this I might be tempted to buy digital.
Not really interested in this game, but if there's this big a price difference for other games I may well go digital! Always gone for physical in the past though...
I pre-ordered the physical copy, not only because I prefer that over the digital version, but I want that sweet Tetris keychain! As far as the price is concerned, I don't see $40 being that steep, especially when the original NES Tetris came out, it was around $50.
@StephenYap3 A disturbing trend of the entitled generation, sadly. They want it free and they want it now.
@ThomasBW84 In case you don't have them, the official MSRPs for Europe are €29.99 & £24.99GBP (PS4) / €39.99 & £34.99GBP (Switch) . Unfortunately, the price will be the same for digital and physical on Switch, according to the press release from Deep Silver.
@KJ85 Thanks for that, found the PR and have updated the article
I can't wait for this game! Definitely going to pick this up on release
Not bad, I may have to pick this up.
As a fan of both PuyoPuyo and Tetris, I am excited for this. I honestly prefer the solo marathon modes to battling AI opponents, so glad those were included. Question, do I pay the extra $10 bux for physical game card and keychain? Yeah, of course!
Everybody complaining it should be the same price as on PS4....you do realise you can't just disconnect the PS4 version from the TV mid game and carry on playing it elsewhere, don't you? The Switch version is the console and portable version both in one.
I love having some puzzle games to pass the time! Two in one game with cool new modes will keep me held over.
Hopefully a Panel de Pon game can come to the Switch as well!
@YouSeemFRAZZLED a sphincter says what?
