Blake J. Harris' excellent book Console Wars did a wonderful job of recounting the titanic struggle between Nintendo and Sega for control of the living in room in the early '90s. Mario and Sonic went head-to-head in a battle worth millions of dollars, and the book – filled with exclusive interviews and information – was an incredible read.
It was quickly snapped up for adaptation as a movie by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, but this has since transitioned to a documentary TV series (with Rogen and Goldberg still involved), and above you'll see the first trailer.
Like the book, it will feature input from the likes of Tom Kalinske and Howard Lincoln (amongst many others) who explain exactly what happened during that tumultuous period in video game history.
Console Wars arrives on CBS All Access on September 23rd, 2020. Now if only we could remember where we've seen that logo before...

I'm assuming that means Netflix then for us in the UK a few days later? Bring it ON! If we could see the Switch now, back then, we would know who won.....
Watch this trailer and if you're in your 30s you'll suddenly become Uncle Albert: "During the war..."
Still working through High Score on Netflix which so far is excellent.
@ToneDeath
Still a great show after all these years..
I doubt if I will watch this due to keyword CBS all-ace$$. Please note this is my own personal opinion, I do not care for Seth Rogen. He is in my hometown often as he is best friends with Danny McBride who lives in my hometown now. In fact, I see Danny and his kids in Gamestop nearly monthly.
High Score and Console Wars are light, or in the latter case, embellished and deliberately skewed, docs for the masses.
If you're are really serious about gaming history, i recommend the 'They Create Worlds' podcast.
I was just a kid during the war...
Screw Seth Rogan. What a waste of a human being.
I had hope for High Score but for me it was too light on real substance. They spent way too much time not fleshing out the participants and repeating information to fill time. Then it spent a lot of time on diversity which is great but seems too political when you just want real details.
Part of the problem for me may be that I know everything intimately already but I was hoping for things to come out that I had forgotten or to see people form the past. This latest attempt may be better as along as Seth Rogan is not in it.
@Kev_Morrison I don't find him funny in the least.
There’s plenty of these telling the same story already on Netflix. They are all the same.
With High Score being on Netflix in UK I guess this will come to Amazon?
High Score started strong and diminished throughout.... it was still worth watching for some decent info and visuals. The whole time I was thinking that there should be a sequel that delves into the Console Wars more...
This logo is almost the same like the Console wars youtube channel.

They should sue them!
@muscpt
Danny is the man! A way better comedic actor and writer than Rogan
The book by Blake Harris was absolutely fascinating and gave a behind-the-scenes picture of what we all talked about at school at the time. I couldn't put it down.
We never called it a 'console war' at the time (well my friends didn't, and I don't remember any of the game magazines referring to it as such). If anything it was the 16-bit wars. I don't think the term "console" was generally used until a little later.
One of the High Score episodes (Sega) stole the book's thunder though, because they waited so damn long to turn this book into a series (though apart from a couple gems, that High Score series was a real disappointment).
Oh, and Seth Rogan's foreword in the Console Wars book was an embarrassing waste of ink 🙄
Why does everything have to have Seth Rogan in it? Nobody likes him.
@Kev_Morrison Sounds like you have a dislike for him beyond his work. Why such strong words? Just asking out of curiosity.
@muscpt Ok. I see that you don’t care for him, too! Why? I’m asking because I’ve heard people say that they don’t care for his work, but I don’t recall people saying that they dislike him as a person.
@outsider83 as someone else who doesn't like Seth rogan, I'm surprised. I thought I was in the minority. Imo he's extremely unfunny and he's one of the leading factors in the decline of the quality of comedy movies(or mainstream comedy in general) for the last decade or so. I've also heard stories about him and he can be unprofessional on set. Also, he's not legitimately good at anything in my opinion. There are much, much more talented people in Hollywood that will never be as rich, in demand, or popular as he is. He's kind of indicative of everything some ppl don't like about modern hollywood/cinema I guess. I don't want him to die or anything, I just don't care for him.
@Cool_Squirtle While I’ve liked quite a bit of his work over the years, what your saying makes total sense.
@khululy I don't think it's possible. They ripped off Nintendo and Sega's designs and the documentary is basically doing the same.
wow i knew it was heated but not this bad.
I grew up a Sega fan with the master system and mega drive ( Sega was just easier and more affordable here ) my friend had a game gear the nes came late. The day i saw an import snes playing super mario world everything changed and my mind was blown.
I assume the Seth Rogan hate is political and not about him as a TV producer. Between Preacher, Future Man, and The Boys he’s been killing it
I would like to see this, need to renew cbs for a month when it's all out. Also, I had no idea so many people hated Seth Rogen for being alive. He seems like a nice guy to me.
Tv series?? I thought it was a movie? I am guessing due to the pandemic they chopped up the movie and turned it into a tv series.
@Samwise7 No. Just CBS.
@Tasuki Yep, all original talk was of it being a movie. I somehow thought that it would be actually acted to a degree also, not just another compiled documentary. Kind of unsure what they've been doing for four years.
Why are you all writing "Rogan"? It's Rogen.
Looks like that cbs all access account i forgot to stop paying for will be of use after all.
@YANDMAN theres a lot of information from a badly archived period. Plus all the original artwork that's there and interviews to setup + things that needed to be cleared. i could def see that taking some years to make.
The book was amateur hour. Written like biased Sega fan boys who don't realize Nintendo is still making consoles to this day while Sega is now barely a third party developer. Oh yeah, and console wars are stupid. Play what you like.
I enjoyed Console Wars (the book) but it would have been better as a real historical work instead of a bad novel.
It would have been better with Joe Rogan.
So much hate for Seth Rogan. I think he's pretty funny.
My whole take on Seth Rogen is he isn't my favorite or least favorite actor. I thought Superbad, which he wrote, was actually a very good movie. I'm not a huge fan of most of his other stuff. I'm not sure why he succeeds in Hollywood while others fail. There are many in this category, though.
@psychoBrew Really? A COVID-19 denying drug head? I know he's popular, but I have no idea why.
Not Rogan... Seth Rogen*
I'll watch it on YouTube soon.
I was highly disappointed about High Score. It only focused on the American story, not the world wide story. And I’m guessing this one will be the same and I’ll be disappointed again
I like Seth Rogen.
@Chris77 High Score was very selective in its storytelling. It left a lot of things out and put too much emphasis on certain things. EA did not turn the tide for Sega with their sports games.
@Ferkner haven't got to that part yet but even in the first couple I noticed large pieces missed out.
@Chris77 if you don't know gaming history then it's a fine series. But if you've read up on it and grew up in it and engaged with it then you can see all sorts of holes ithe story and how they massaged things to tell the story they wanted.
