Re: Nickelodeon Splat Pack Revives Multiple SNES Titles In One Retro Collection

fair enough ✌️ when I think about how many games were included in compilations around the ps2 era, and how polished and fleshed out a lot of those releases were (and obv physical, and with a manual,) it's really hard for me to see 35 for 3 games as a good deal.

it's a real old man problem, and really has little to do with how anyone else should spend their money. But I can't shake Taito Legends 1 + 2 😂✌️

i have enjoyed plenty of shooters! i just think we've kinda gotten to a point where for so many people (and i think especially men, and especially young men) think of videogames as a gun simulator, or more broadly, a murder/war simulator. at the very least, it feels like most games are about ending the life of your "enemy."

and, i just want to be a voice telling whoever wants to hear it, that it's OK to get some gaming satisfaction from somewhere else, mentally, thematically, aesthetically, whatever you want to call it. ✌️ its not about shame, its about balance. or something.

thanks for replying! ive heard some VERY encouraging things about arc raiders from certain internet people, so i definitely want to see it for myself. and BG3 is still on my list to eventually get to, but im a bit afraid i dont have the attention span for the long haul 😬

"I think yet again ninty are hitting that sales brick wall."

I think it's too early to say (i was REALLY optimistic during the launch window of both Dreamcast and somewhat even Wii U, as were others 😂) but I agree that theres a pattern and i think that's inarguable.

frankly Nintendo does better when they have to lean into their canonical fanbase and dont get all the extra cash from fairweathers and johnny come latelys. I think they call this kind of reasoning "gatekeeping" now, I like to think we are all entitled to our opinions and perspectives. ✌️❤️

make love, not war ✌️ we need a "yeah, guns and war actually suck" moment, again.

it's one thing to come to terms personally with the inevitability of war, of death, but it's another to just bathe in it, right? do you need to fight and kill to enjoy playing a game? 🤔

if you rarely play games where you dont shoot guns, or kill, maybe examine that. apologies for the random soapbox, I'm just planting seeds. 👍

the Steamdeck is a GREAT DEAL for people who know how to use it, but its definitely not for the typical Nintendo fan (or child) who expects to play bumper bowling for the entire experience, top to bottom.

I love my steamdeck but a non gaming 35 y.o mom (or any busy parent, gamin or non ✌️) with a 10 y.o. is better served by the Nintendo console, by far. and it's VERY clear to me now that they have steered entirely to that sector and they are likely never coming back.

lets just enjoy our steamdecks and hope one day theres some fresh talent at nintendo with some interesting ideas again. 😊✌️ thats what I'm doin, anyway.

"Hey, Costanza, I prefer you as the Pendant than the Expat! 🤗"

that's exactly what my mom said! 😮‍💨

"I think us gamers or enthusiasts (whatever we want to call ourselves) are trapped in our little bubble and constantly misread the market. In contrast, Nintendo don't. They fully know their market."

I'll admit that going "broad" has made them a lot of money. I don't care. I miss the scrappy company that delivered original ideas (in software AND hardware) nearly every time, when they actually needed all the support they could get from their fans that had stuck around since the goodle days.

once they realized remasters sell, while original content gets passed over by busy parents at xmas, well, who can blame them for going soft and lazy?

but, I'm not going to listen to Backstreet Boys (they are still "cool," right kids?) and pretend it's Mozart just because they are sold a billion records. They got rich, good for them, no thank you.

"As a collective, we are suckers! 😁"

that's why I'm "Expat," now 😅✌️ I'll be back when the games get fresh again. 👍

The_Nintendo_Expat

@trcsf

"The Switch 1 got all the WII U games and the Switch 2 is getting all the Switch 1 games. I wish Nintendo would put all these hours into just making something new."

I've moved on to assuming that if they could make new, interesting games, then they would.

I don't think theyve been capable of actually challenging themselves for a while, now. they didnt even make the last (arguably best) Fzero game, and they havent made a compelling dungeon in a Zelda game in recent memory (to put it lightly.) I think their faith in themselves is shot, and they are paralyzed by the fear of turning in a bad big money profit report, or whatever.

anyway, its an unwelcome opinion but when i get pushback its usually ad hominem, not an actual argument.

What sucks is all the accusations that i/we "just want the switch Nintendo to fail" when nothing could be further from the truth. I miss my surrogate dad 😂✌️

Re: Random: Mario Wonder's New Box Art Might Be The Ugliest 'Switch 2 Edition' Cover Yet

The_Nintendo_Expat

@NeonPizza

l love "revisiting" things, it's one of life's pleasures, imo 😊 im not as attached to the switch library obv but mk8 and botw (both games i owned on wii u first actually) are all timers and i will be returning periodically, 100%. I didn't particularly enjoy any first party Switch exclusives, to be honest, but i didnt play all of them so I'll likely be revisiting Switch to fill in some of those gaps, if history is indeed prologue ✌️❤️

anyway im rambling. i think if you really want to preserve something, make copies. 👍 im not relying on these companies to make and keep the games available to me indefinitely.

"And by that point I probably won't have any desire to go back to it anyways."

to each their own! i have games ive owned for 35 years that I still play.

but i agree in a way. i dont think ill want to revisit switch era games the way i do for NES-Wii games. Time will tell! 👍

PS - I must admit, the notion
of them "magically" delisting games on the eshop gave me a chuckle 😂✌️

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

The_Nintendo_Expat

@Dark_Isatari

"Was excited to try the Switch remake of the lauded Metroid Prime and found it pretty dull."

i am a huge fan of the original Prime on gamecube, and when I tried the switch remake i found it to be very dull as well. they turned it from a 3d metroidvania/puzzle platformer into a half assed FPS action game (like the latter entries in the series, frankly,) and the shiny "modern" graphics really didnt capture my heart the way the truly inspired, incredible for their day original visuals and art did.

anyway, my 2c. I would humbly recommend trying the Cube original if you ever get a chance! ✌️

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

@KingChiliPepper

hey thanks for coming back and saying so! 😊 most people don't in my experience.

I think we actually agree in many ways, and this is definitely a subject which i can see "both sides" of. different writers, one publication. I think it's important to understand that there are different minds working together here, but also that narrative is a thing in journalism. sometimes the narrative is a lot more cohesive than it is on this site around this game, and I think at least partially thats what some users are commenting on. 👍 I hope that made sense 😅✌️

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

The_Nintendo_Expat

@KingChiliPepper

"the review was written by a different person"

yes, but the collection of "stories" in a publication is known as a "narrative." there's one proper noun across the top of the page, afterall, and it's neither of these authors'. ✌️

neither perspective is specifically wrong but its jarring for the reader to see a supposed 9/10 game be called barely good enough on the same page a bit later. just my 2 cents.

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

The_Nintendo_Expat

@MasterGraveheart

"I think the game would have been best-served to be called "Metroid Beyond," and just nix the Prime name all together."

this is an excellent idea. that way id have known better than to get my hopes up, and maybe id be cautiously optimistic/curious about this new direction, rather than feeling like they are dancing on my childhood's grave. ✌️

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

The_Nintendo_Expat

@Stilgars

"If it’s “just good enough,” why give it a 9/10 (“excellent”) last month? You’re already saying it’s barely okay after only a few weeks. At this rate, you’ll probably be calling it a complete disappointment by next year."

good point that I've made in the past. at this point, i feel like i can tell the "real" 9s and 10s on this site from the "inertial hype" ones ✌️

(though i doubt this site will ever admit the disappointment so directly, frankly.)

Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

The_Nintendo_Expat

"People misread the intent of this space – it exists as a palate cleanser to blast through on the fun-to-control Vi-O-La bike between tense sessions of dungeon-crawling in tight corridors."

1) source?

2) what was the intent that "they" wrongly applied, specifically? who are "they?"

3) what difference does "intent" make to the end user's experience, in a game like this? is the desert less boring if i can appreciate that my palate is supposedly being cleansed?

4) cleansed of what? linear corridors with little risk of getting lost? when i needed a break from prime 1, i popped in some Melee or something 🥳👍

5) one person's "good enough" is another's "not." ✌️

Re: "He Is Amazing" - Mario Voice Actor Kevin Afghani Heaps Praise On Charles Martinet

The_Nintendo_Expat

@N00BiSH

This is why i asked the question the way I did, because surely if what they wanted was someone to do the Charles Martinet thing, there are many people out there that could do it better than what this guy is doing.

I'm not as upset about this one as you are, but I do share your frustration on some level. I really liked Martinet's interpretation, and I LOVE the pre Martinet Mario who sounds more like he's from Brooklyn, but IMO neither of the new contenders are half as iconic, and they never will be. ✌️

EDIT - i also maintain that every line I could possibly ever want Mario to deliver (and then some) has already been recorded by Martinet and hiring a new voice actor for the games at least is completely unnecessary.

(I'm perfectly fine with Mario saying nothing the entire game, tbh. 👍)

The_Nintendo_Expat

"...given how long I spent searching for those damn P-Switches, Peach Medallions and ? Panels. Maybe one day I'll be able to come back to it..."

this is such a devastating thing to say about a MarioKart game, for me, on a couple different levels. 😟

sort of like if they made a castlevania game, and someone said they weren't so keen on the harvesting and matchmaking elements 😂

(or come to think of it, a metroid game but the complaint is annoying unfunny talkative NPCs 💀✌️)

Re: Nintendo's Investors Are Reportedly "Spooked" As Stock Slides

The_Nintendo_Expat

@BAN

great comment! I agree with what you said, broadly.

"Nintendo gets complacent on games when they’re in success mode.... That’s typical of them."

my gut is to agree with this, but can you name another time in Nintendo's history in which this was actually true?

they dominated in the NES and SNES days, but they were almost peerless at this time for software quality and innovation, imo.

The next time they had this kind of relevance was the Wii era, but I was again pretty happy with the quality and direction of what they were doing with their big series'.

anyway something I'm thinking about ✌️
