doing ROM releases the way Nintendo is doing is like charging to drink tap water when a clear spring flows freely in your back yard.

i guess i mostly was thinking of playing switch 2 games, going forward, as that was the console I chose the Steamdeck over. ✌️not sure how I worded it above actually.

Suffice to say, I am glad to know my Steamdeck can play Switch games, but so far I'm not really interested, and I generally only emulate consoles at least 2 gens old as a rule ✌️

I bought a Steamdeck (i know, out of stock 😕) and the grass is SO much greener in terms of hardware, software, and "shop."

Literally every complaint I had about Switch is non existent:

Better prices for the same games, game sharing, returns/refunds, FOLDERS, themes, speedy eshop, frequent deep discounts including first party games, demos for more games, ability to actually filter out porn games, ability to filter purchased games, ability to purge games from your library, great feeling and progressive/modern controls and ergonomics, analog triggers, easy compatibility with literally every switch or generic PC accessory i own and everything ive bought since, custom artwork selectable for each game, ability to play just about any legacy console or PC game i can think of without hacking, online without paid subscription, total flexibility with almost anything about the interface I might want to change, desktop mode (its a literal PC on one side and a modern console on the other...)
I will just stop here.

I'll give you an example: I found a 90s or early 00s laptop USB floppy drive and a USB dvd burner at a goodwill, i plugged them both in, they just work (😮) and I was able to install my games from floppy/cd that i still have laying around from CHILDHOOD (battle bugs!!,) and also watch dvd movies, burn music cds, etc etc.

usb and bluetooth keyboards and mice also "just work."

I bought Ugreen a 4x usb hub for 7.99 off Amazon, BOOM multitap. just worked. (maybe switch can do that, has anyone tried? ✌️)

at one point i realized just how much Nintendo keeps its boot on its own platform's potential.

The only downside at all has been I can't play first party Nintendo games but so far theyve put nothing on Switch/Switch 2 since October (or really for years now IMO) that makes me regret my decision. ✌️

PS - i agree: I havent liked XBOX from jump (and I wont support Microsoft anyway,) and I was a PlayStation obsessive in the PSX/PS2 era but PS3 is where they lost me. 👍

They don't have to justify buying them, they have come here voluntarily and are justifying all on their own.

the excuses for what is simply an overpriced game are stretching pretty thin, here. it's very interesting the psychology of someone willing to pay a premium but unwilling to admit that's what it is. 🍿

the FF pixel remasters are remakes so these games are not comparable. Nintendo literally sold these same games (ROMs) on Wii U for half this price, the pixel remasters are new, high effort ports, with newly recorded music and completely reworked graphics.

also, selling more units (or as you put it, "being more profitable") could easily mean that you can afford to make less per unit, in order to maximize sales numbers/user base.

why do you think that something being more boutique (or "niche" if youd rather) would make it less expensive per unit?

while I agree that simply being overpriced (and these games absolutely are) is not "anti consumer" in and of itself, it seems like you are willing to hand wave away the entire concept even as anti consumer practices continuously pummel us and late stage capitalism burns.

Nintendo is absolutely an anti-consumer corporation, and they have been since I can remember, and they have the rotten policies and class action lawsuits to show for it. they just happened to also make the best/most interesting games and hardware from my perspective, for most of the 80s 90s and 00s.

for your info:

10 (US) dollars in 2016 is equivalent to roughly 13 dollars today. so, Nintendo is outpacing inflation over three fold. 👍

at this rate, in another ten years a GBA rom will be 40 dollars via Nintendoflation, while actual inflation would have it at still less than 20.

PS - people expect products to get better over time (and for creators' ideas to evolve and improve,) even if they don't get more expensive, but especially if they do. ✌️

I've been a fan of Nintendo and engaged in Nintendo related conversation since essentially birth, I'm as invested as anyone and very interested in what they are doing, through thick and thin. 👍

I get your point that everything eventually goes on sale, or can be attained through some effort for a lower price. yes. What I don't understand is how you can't understand why anyone even mentions ever having an opinion with a starting MSRP when it is very clearly an important point for people both on its face, and also its implications for the cost of the game at discount going forward 👍

but anyway, we could go around and around! I've made my point ✌️ thanks for engaging w me and I hope I've made some kind of sense.

PS - when I say they "lost me to the competition," I mean I didnt get the latest Nintendo console this time, for the first time ever. There is a chance they could win me back, but in terms of output they don't seem too interested so that's where I'm at right now 👍

everyone has a different idea of what a fair or affordable price is for any given game.

if I still felt that Nintendo games were worth full asking price, I'd still be buying them at full price, no problem 👍 trouble is, the quality has gone down (imo, for the "opinion police" among us 🚨) while the price has gotten hiked very rapidly over the last few years.

50% of 80 is still 25% more than 50% of 60, you dig? and Nintendo still doesn't offer ANY kind of returns or refunds on the eShop, or demos for most games.

Sorry, but after 40 years of dedicated fandom they lost me to the competition, and the grass actually IS greener in terms of hardware, pricing, and arguably software. ✌️ and putting on blinders doesn't make it untrue.

for the record, for my whole life I bought every Nintendo game that interested me at full price, happily, knowing I was getting something special, and rarely being disappointed. for everyone else, I wait patiently for a sale.

I continued this practice into the Switch era with varying satisfaction until TOTK, which was "the final straw" as it were. everybody is different! ✌️

yeah they could literally just put the handful of excellent first party games for each system in the eshop for 8-15 bucks each.

they could even bundle a few together at a time, stick em on a cart, call it "Gamecube all stars" "N64 All Stars" etc etc and sell them for 60 bucks a pop and old school fans would treat it like the second coming.

surely the only nightmare scenario imaginable would be that nobody buys them AND they lose subscribers? does that even make sense?

case in point an old Ford from the 50s might be worth 500k in perfect condition, but that doesnt mean a new Ford pickup should cost 120k.

Nintendo made a series called "Game & Watch Collection" for gameboy way back in diggity 7ish. they remade the simple games with new graphics befitting gameboy games of the era, compiled them in a few volumes, and released them that way.

I believe that is what the better games in the Virtual Boy library deserve. 👍

imagine if they remade them in a retro polygonal 3D style? That would be so boss.
