Re: Review: Virtual Boy For Switch 1 & 2 - Is It Really Worth Revisting Nintendo's Greatest Folly?

The_Nintendo_Expat

Nintendo made a series called "Game & Watch Collection" for gameboy way back in diggity 7ish. they remade the simple games with new graphics befitting gameboy games of the era, compiled them in a few volumes, and released them that way.

I believe that is what the better games in the Virtual Boy library deserve. 👍

imagine if they remade them in a retro polygonal 3D style? That would be so boss.

you are right, I shouldn't have singled you out ✌️ I apologize.

I do think you are tone policing a little bit when you demand that others couch their opinions in certain wording. You should be able to distinguish stated fact and opinion without requiring specific language bookending the statement.

and, that is my opinion, if it's not clear 😆✌️

" No decently smart person isn't going to take advantage of a fool and their cash."

I think that's a rotten thing to say and I would urge you to reconsider. ✌️

OTOH the current POTUS would agree with you 100% and I've heard he is "like a smart person" so maybe i really am an indecent dummy as you suggest for making an honest living with hard work. 👍

"You seem to forget that the original Pokémon games have technically had 4 remakes over the last 30 years."

did i say remakes? i said ports.

very well, ill rework it: they could try offering this exact product for a reasonable price. 👍

a little unsolicited advice: strike "you people" from your vocabulary. it's not flattering. ✌️

make a high quality product for a fair price, and don't worry about the haters. that's what i say.
it truly seems like the Nintendo of old agreed.

My problem with modern day Nintendo is they constantly make obvious mistakes, validating the haters. Meanwhile, the "other side" of the fanbase eats up whatever, with a forced smile and a performative sense of righteousness.

one wonders if Nintendo ever cracked a Working Designs release and realized what a mediocre publisher they have become. 🤔

(yes, I realize Working Designs went out of business 😅✌️)

"There will be a 'physical' edition in Japan, although the game itself will still be a code-in-box."

"Nintendo of America has put out a FAQ saying that these games "will not receive physical releases"."

"Releasing FireRed and LeafGreen is a pretty big move to acknowledge Pokémon's 30th anniversary,"

oh good! and here I was worried that this was an incredibly low effort way to celebrate the surely billions of dollars they've made off their loyal fans.

I have a few thoughts!

My problem with the Switch 2 is that it is indeed essentially a "Switch Pro," afterall, and I wasn't that big a fan of Switch 1 in the first place. I wasn't an early adopter, and I was never really impressed with the console or its games (my two favorite Nintendo published games on Switch are easily MK8DX and BOTW, both of which I considered excellent but flawed games when I owned them on Wii U.)

Personally I think the detachable joycons are a total waste, and add a lot of complication, cost, fragility, and batteries to the mix for essentially no reason (i assume some children like to use them but ive never actually seen anyone play "tabletop mode" with just joycons for more than a few seconds.)

I don't really have an opinion on Switch 2 from a tech perspective, as that's really not my focus. i spend 80% of my gaming time playing older than current games, and i have for a long time. I also happen to believe that the constraints made for better games. I can see however that this is where your passion lies, and I respect that. And, I get what you are saying, and I believe you! there are lots of handhelds in the 500-1200 space that the Switch 2 seems to be competing with rather directly, and competently.

To put it all another way: if Switch 2 had launched with for example an announcement of a fresh Zelda game with dungeons, or a new Fzero game a la GX, I'd have already bought one. 👍 at this point I'm not holding my breath that Nintendo is interested in making the games I would like to see, or even capable, really. their focus seems to be on open world sequels, subscriptions, "casual" games, toddlers, and movies.

...and they can keep em! 😅✌️ not the toddlers.

thanks for the lengthy reply! 👍 you clearly have thought about this a lot, and I appreciate that.

"no offence, but if you only complain about the price not knowing about latest technology and what all this cost, you are just simply sum up shortsighted nonsense comparissons based only on pricetags."

I dont offend easily, no worries ✌️ it seems that you are under the impression that I have complained at some point in this thread about the price of the Switch 2. I have not. 👍

FWIW it can be helpful, when making a long reply, to quote relevant text directly from the commenter to which you are replying.

The_Nintendo_Expat

@HalBailman

hey, thanks for the very kind words! I do hope that I live up to them ✌️

I mostly agree with you, without the word "never." I would, and I guess, am, argue(? see ive confused myself) that Sony and N64 were both selling pretty well, had their different strengths and weaknesses, and were in a cost war the entire time, even in the absolute heyday of both consoles. 1996 and 97 were hardly the waning years!

(EDIT - for example, an equivalent price cut for Switch would've been all the way down to 199.99 by 2019)

regardless, it has been a decade of no price cuts so I'm just talking about ancient history. thanks again my friend 🤘

Re: Nintendo Is Considering A Switch 2 Price Hike This Year, According To New Report

The_Nintendo_Expat

@HalBailman

thanks for indulging me, i really appreciate it!

as i suspected, most of the supporting facts come from the switch era. i was questioning the "never" part of the "Nintendo never reduces their prices" claim, but obviously we have different realities living on different continents ✌️

here's what ive found, which comports with my memory:

SNES launched in 91 at 199.99,
then was reduced to 99.99 circa 1993

(note that Nintendo was dominating at this time, sales wise.)

N64 launched at 199.99,
was reduced to 149.99 in 1997,
then to 129.99 in 1998,
and finally 99.99 in 2000

people will be quick to point out that the n64 was struggling against the PSX at the time, hence the price cuts. ive already pointed out that the situation was flipped in 93 when they HALVED the price of the snes, but lets look at what the market leader was doing during the N64s time:

PSX launched at 299.99,
dropped to 199.99 in 1996,
149.99 in 1997,
129.99 in 98/early 99

lets look at one more era in which Nintendo made obscene amounts of cash:

Wii launched at 249.99,
reduced to 199.99 in 2009,
149.99 in 2011,
and finally it hit 129.99 in 2012.

Switch is the first generation that Nintendo decided "you know what? f*ck the poor kids, we can make 300 a pop on aging, inferior hardware and the fans will love us for it." and now that is gospel for Nintendo fans. Amen.

PS - i'm doing great, thanks! its a weird/bad time for my country but I'm personally doing pretty alright.

how are you? always good to see you on here my friend.

"The Switch 2 will never get cheaper because Nintendo never reduces its console prices unless it's a clearance situation or temporary deal. They like to set an initial price and leave it forever,"

is this true of any Nintendo console before Switch?

EDIT - I remembered you are not where I am, geographically 😅 still, I am interested to learn what you have to say as always 😊✌️

I agree with you on substance, and I actually think Nintendo is probably excused this time.

but the saying isn't, "fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, I'm sure you had your reasons." 🤔

referring to the article, I think the obvious viability of the "prediction" actually lends to its general "my uncle works at Nintendo" cred.

BTW my uncle works at Nintendo, and he says we arent getting a followup to Fzero GX or Starfox 64 any time soon. publish that! 😂

Re: 13 Switch Emulators Hit By Latest Wave Of Nintendo Takedowns

The_Nintendo_Expat

@jsty3105

thanks for replying! I have a few thoughts.

"I only see a handful of people who seem genuinely into preservation"

nothing about the concept of proliferation as preservation requires that the person is "into it." the more people have a copy of the game, the better preserved that game is. that is the argument.

"and even then, it still assumes that Nintendo don't do any preservation."

im not sure that assumption has been made, in the slightest. in fact ive never heard anyone say that, at all 👍 yeah, bit of a straw man.

"The argument is also that other people will preserve games better than Nintendo can and that's a very tenuous argument"

ive never heard this argument articulated either, and I think you have proposed a false dichotomy here. One kind of preservation does not invalidate the other, does it? 🤔

"I've heard about that story of Nintendo being 'caught'. The deeper story, I believe, is that there's seemingly some evidence to support that theory and there's also some evidence to support that it's not quite what it seems on the surface."

what I remember from reporting of the time was that the ROMs on those carts were clearly watermarked or otherwise tagged as coming from one of the well known sites of the day. I don't remember there being much to the story besides that.

"It's more sensational to report that Nintendo got caught of course."

of course 😂✌️

Re: 13 Switch Emulators Hit By Latest Wave Of Nintendo Takedowns

The_Nintendo_Expat

@jsty3105

"seemingly practically none of the people pirating games for 'game preservation' are preserving those games in anything other than their own PC or emulator device. It's not like they're putting it on Internet Archive."

there is a strong argument that proliferation is a form of preservation, do you disagree with this?

as a point of information, Nintendo themselves have been "caught" using ROMs downloaded from emuparadise et al for their own official re releases.

Re: 13 Switch Emulators Hit By Latest Wave Of Nintendo Takedowns

The_Nintendo_Expat

@X68000

thanks for clarifying your position 👍

i have three questions, in order:

why are you morally against people downloading old games to play? (not a trick question ✌️)

are you morally against buying games on the second hand market?

what is the moral difference between these two practices, in your opinion?

(FWIW I'm not about taking food out of the mouths of a developer's family by downloading games that are being developed, marketed and sold contemporaneously.)

Re: 13 Switch Emulators Hit By Latest Wave Of Nintendo Takedowns

The_Nintendo_Expat

@Protion9

"We are not talking about some 30 year old games with their developers being about to retire."

i felt as though the scope of the conversation had expanded to ALL games emulation, when i replied. i actually dont disagree that downloading "current" games is a morally questionable thing to do, and ive never done it and dont plan to 👍

Re: 13 Switch Emulators Hit By Latest Wave Of Nintendo Takedowns

The_Nintendo_Expat

@ShadLink

couple questions for you:

"downloading dumps, even from games you already have is Piracy."

is there a source for this? does it make sense to you, personally?

"Dumping them yourself is legal as long as you don't have to break an encryption."

same question, source?

"Emulators are legal as long as you don't use them with copyrighted games."

given this, how do you feel about Nintendo successfully shutting down the work of all these people?

Re: Nintendo Is Considering A Switch 2 Price Hike This Year, According To New Report

The_Nintendo_Expat

@user0

"Consoles are supposed to go down in price over time."

Nintendo already bucked this trend years ago, way before AI and ram shortages etc, and got praised for it by fans 🙄 right here on this website. "why would they lower the price when it is still selling?" as though getting the console more accessible to more of their fans isn't a virtue in and of itself.

now, the same fans have new reasons to point to in addition, and I'm sure they will be quick to jump on here and let you know. just remember that in an AI free, relatively stable world, they STILL defended Nintendo regardless. ✌️
