six years is enough time to become completely burnt out on the many many metroidvanias that have come out on switch since hollow knight. it's not their problem per se, but just to give you an example of a relatable way that the wait could "kill the hype" for someone. ✌️

I like thinking about Mortal Kombat more than I like playing it, so the deep kuts are konsiderably more kaptivating to me than the klassics.

that being said, I picked up Sub Zero at a thrift store not terribly long ago and yes, it's awful. I fully wanted to get into it, try to beat it even maybe, and I couldn't get past the first level.

seems the definition of "AAA" has become "games that cost 70 dollars."

I have faith in Sakurai but if you're gonna ask for 70 bucks a copy, you gotta at least draw a logo. there are indie pubs/devs putting far more effort into the presentation of 20 dollar games, and this used to be a domain in which Nintendo was unmatched.

with all respect for Sakurai, this looks like a 40 dollar game because it is one. just my speculation of course. I guess we'll see! 👍

I'm also old. ✌️ I understand and reflect the general sentiment, and I agree with you that the magic is largely gone in gaming, but is that because of people complaining about the font of the new Kirby game, on the brand new Nintendo console, or is it because when it came time to put the title on that game, Nintendo shrugged:

"don't care. 'italic sans?'"

Nintendo seemed a lot more 'magical' in the 80s 90s in part because they cared a lot about the visual design of their games. I think we can agree on this 👍

if you didn't know anything going in, you could definitely read this article and walk away believing that Cuphead invented this art style. I'm aware it's been pointed out and addressed, but I'm frankly not convinced. I see two sentences involving the art style, including the headline.

"'Bad Cheese' Is Another Survival Horror With Cuphead-Inspired Visuals"

and

"Bad Cheese utilises old-school 'rubber hose' animation, which was perhaps most notably used in the 2D action-platformer Cuphead."

which, besides being arguably false by way of insufficient information, could lead a young reader to believe that the "old school" game called Cuphead is the original source of this art style.

I've Ctrl+F Disney and Fleischer, as well as the ones @darkswabber mentioned just to be sure. I'm only bringing all this because it has already been covered so I felt it necessary not to waste time with unresearched BS. But, I'm happy to be, and sometimes am, wrong. ✌️❤️

No hard feelings. to me, it has felt like you've been mocking me this whole time, or talking in circles for some pointed reason, for example:

you: "I think if you want to play Wave Race 64 on a current Nintendo platform then you'll just have suck it up and subscribe"

me: "Voting with my dollars as they say is very easy for me as the subscription model has zero appeal and therefore no value for my money. ✌️"

you: "if you don't like it then you'll need to stick with your principles and vote with your wallet by not subscribing."

does that make sense? I'm just trying to explain how I got here. I like reading your posts and we've been at this a while, I've no intention of having bad feelies today. 😊✌️

edit - I had originally used the word "lecture" to describe user's previous replies.

all three are very ugly but NA once again is the only one that gives any idea of what the game is.

you can describe almost EVERY Japanese cover, and half the European ones, as a pile of characters doing nothing, essentially "posing for the camera" together, conveniently overlapping "Leifeld style" so the artist doesn't have to draw hardly any hands, feet, or scenery. these are no different.

PS - this was my first game on SNES after Mario World and Pilotwings, I freaking love this game. taught me how to spell "island," might be the first game I ever just "left on" to listen to the music in my bedroom. ❤️

I haven't played it yet (plan to, vaguely, but there's not a S2 in my orbit yet) but I have no faith at all that I'm going to like it. I considered MK8 an essentially perfect game if they'd just change a couple pretty simple things, and they did... other stuff.

I did play shredders revenge for a very long session one night with my wife and a handful of friends. we had a great time, but I never felt compelled to pick it up again and neither did any of them AFAIK.

I'm sure I'd have fun again if I did play, but these days I'm realizing that my time after work is finite and a game has to be a little more compelling to compete with, you know, staring at the wall until bed time, or eating a bowl of cereal while staring at the kitchen wall, until bedtime. so many options.

I can appreciate your perspective, but I am disinterested in NSO both on principle, and as a straight value assessment. 👍

I've been around a while and genuinely, respectfully, Nintendo hasn't put anything good on NSO that I haven't tried before. I already own Wave Race 64 for example, on N64, so simply accessing the game on switch is not the point for me. same deal with Fzero GX: they have offered nothing to me, as someone who already has access to that game on GameCube. what I want is to have i.e. "own a copy of" the game on a more modern console.

I know what I like, and I'll buy it if they offer it for sale. same deal I've always offered, they changed not me. 👍 Voting with my dollars as they say is very easy for me as the subscription model has zero appeal and therefore no value for my money. ✌️

PS - I've been "trying" older games on the .. let's say "pay-what-you-want" model since I was a child, and still somehow I've thrown GOBS of cash at Nintendo as well 🤔 really makes you think.

your observations are spot-on, and yes, I too "want more." I am getting myself a Steamdeck for my birthday in October and soldiering forward without Nintendo for the first time in my life. (we'll keep our switch of course. ❤️)

We plan to buy a second one for her, as well, which I think will be a lot of fun.

we have no plans to get a Switch 2 at this time. 😕 I'm feeling nothing for it and AFAIK none of my close friends are either, and we each have all the Nintendo consoles, essentially.

I think about Jet Moto all the time! it was my absolute favorite "jet ski" game and also a pretty excellent antigrav racer at the same time. ❤️

in fact, I've been playing descenders because it's the closest to a "jet moto like" experience I can find.

Nintendo is getting seriously outclassed by indies, for me, for the last 10 or so years. When I want what I consider a 'Nintendo' like experience I'm better served elsewhere, for much less.

I specifically play games on the TV because I struggle with focus, and half focusing on two different things at once can feel like a complete waste of time, for me, in addition to being not very relaxing at all (for me obv)

I also specifically love videogame sounds and music so I want them on the big speakers, but that's secondary to my main point 👍

caveat - I totally do play a game while watching TV from time to time, fwiw ✌️❤️
