Re: Rumour: Sony Is Gunning For The Switch 2 With A Handheld, Dockable PS6

@Misima

it's a cliche at this point, but having felt exactly like you do (except that 20 years ago when Sony had exclusives, I also loved their Dualshock controllers) up until the last couple years, I'm not going to migrate to Steamdeck, use whatever controllers I want, play all my old games on there, and wait and see if there is ever a Nintendo exclusive I want badly enough to spend 500 dollars. ✌️

I love those games! and they simply wouldn't be the same or arguably even work without "tank controls," especially in a pre-analog stick world.

I'm assuming that at least some of the confusion is pressing "up" to go "forward," because a) there's up/forward confusion generally (e.g. "non inverted" people, don't get me started) and b) presumably, the same people can handle playing super sprint or GTA1/2.

but that's a presumption inside of an assumption so YMMV. ✌️

"For example, I’ve never given Metroid a fair shot (Prime and Dread are both on my switch with less then an hour of playtime). I’ve always struggled with metroidvania’s and FPS games,"

I don't generally like FPS games either, but I think if you play with "classic" controls and think of it more like Ocarina (read: "z targeting") but in first person you'll have a better time. I certainly did. this game is worth your time for the vibes alone. VERY immersive. ✌️👍

(fwiw I didn't like Dread but Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission are top shelf imo)

"it is not an insult, just an observation based on your words on how games were in the past"

ah, whoops! I meant my reply as a joke, albeit a kind of folksy, Okie one that doesn't really make sense when you try to explain it 😅✌️

I'm proudly old school! I certainly prefer the way games used to be, the new games that I do like tend to be evolutions of the old ways, rather than the new kinds of games that have gotten popular, and I liked the industry itself more in the old Sega Nintendo Sony paradigm (that I deeply wish we got more time with 😢)

anyway, aren't you glad you asked! 😂✌️

I can see where you are coming from. I know my view of "old Nintendo" is rosy, but OTOH I truly believe they were the best single thing to ever happen to videogames, and stayed that way for a long time, but now I feel much less so. 😕

I believe that Nintendo has every opportunity to blow minds again (or, my mind, and others who feel the way I do) but it's going to take hardware innovation and some risktaking, two things that I don't believe they are even interested in pursuing any longer. it's a different company. I'm just here to kind of watch the saga as it unfolds (and talk to people, and appreciate old games, and watch for the rare interesting Nintendo game that occasionally comes along👍)

EDIT - you know what? I think I loved Nintendo so much in the 64 + cube era because PlayStation was SO strong in those days, PSX and then PS2 obv, and Nintendo was like this odd ball "pure" games company who was always doing something interesting in the margins. they were the perfect counterpoint to Sony in those days. I proudly owned both companies' consoles, and they offered something completely different, even in their third party catalogues.

now, I have ZERO love for PlayStation, I had a PS3 that I sort of liked, and it died a premature weird death, and I just never cared for PlayStation ever again. I became a Nintendo devotee during the Wii era, c.2008.

as much as I appear to have "fallen out of love" with Nintendo, it's nothing compared to my shift in feelings towards PlayStation. Idk if this clears anything up or is interesting to learn or anything, but there it is ✌️

" The devs behind these touch ups could have been pouring their time into something new.

I’m still mostly convinced that the early leaks forced Nintendo’s hand, and then were hoping to launch later than they did."

for sure. now is not the time to rehash games, particularly ones that feel like they JUST came out. there should be at least one new "mainline" game in a series before we see "updates" happening, and even then sometimes that feels wrong (yooka-replaylee for example)

I agree that somehow this feels rushed, but would they REALLY have to rush it out just because someone released a picture of what appeared to be exactly what everyone expected already? it's not like there were ANY surprises in the switch 2 reveal.

(oh, mouse mode, we all love mouse mode.)

"The performance and resolution increase being locked behind buying added content is just a way to add fake value to a slim package."

yes, I was amazed to find out that your ~500.00 doesn't even buy you the performance upgrades for the games youve already bought, on the console you already bought. 🙄 (in some cases already bought TWICE, on two different consoles...)

I agree with just about everything you've said, and at this time I've no plans to buy a switch 2. I do hope it gets better though, for the people who've already got one. 👍

"Nonetheless all Switch 2 first party upgrades that were purely on performance are 100% free, only those with additional content you have to pay for."

is this actually true?

the BOTW "upgrade pack" appears to cost 10 dollars or paid NSO subscription, and I see no in-game content mentioned. what "packs" are free?

(EDIT - I see someone else already found another "exception.")

”that's why they make chocolate ice cream!" was something my grand dad used to say 👍

I'm curious to know, did you play Super Metroid and SOTN at the time of release? and if not, did you play other "metroidvanias" before you played those?

lastly, what are some of your favorites in the genre, besides what we have discussed already? ✌️

"Then again, the launch 3DS's stereoscopic 3D & Mixed Reality were amazing back in 2011, and the Wii prior, when implemented well, boasted revolutionary pointer aiming controls etc, and even the Wii U's game pad features were utilized quite well depending on the title"

this all illustrates that Nintendo made almost exclusively revolutionary, creative, interesting hardware before the switch generation, and the games reflect that. 👍

IMO there was nothing wrong with Prime 1's controls, at all. perfection.

then, they made a new control scheme that also worked, on Wii, but really wasn't necessary.

now, they are going to... mouse controls? 😮‍💨 I haven't read or heard anything either way, but best case scenario, I can ignore "mouse mode" entirely and just play this game with a GameCube controller... (please?)

PS - I wish I could get on the VR train, but last time I tried it I had a motion sickness situation so severe that it put me off the tech forever. literally the worst time I've ever had gaming, no contest.

"It’s impossible for any game to be as mind blowing as the early N64 stuff given the paradigm shift taking place at the time"

respectfully, that is incorrect.

It’s impossible for any game to be as mind blowing in the same way as the early N64 stuff given the paradigm shift taking place at the time.

that would be an arguably correct statement.

(never mind the fact that I said "anywhere near as interesting, revolutionary, or frankly mind-blowing")

I'm not asking for Nintendo to do the same thing again, I'm asking for them to be that innovative and creative again. These are subjective terms, but that's fitting because I am expressing an opinion 👍

Nintendo games that have blown my mind in various other different ways include Earthbound, F zero/X/GX, Super Mario Kart, Link's Awakening, DK94, Pilotwings, Super Metroid, Star Fox, Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong Country, twilight princess, and Mario Galaxy to name a few off the top of my head.

few, if any, of these came out during any kind of "paradigm shift," and many of them actually were developed for what was considered aging or even "inferior" hardware at the time.

if NS2 had a couple first party launch games anywhere near as interesting, revolutionary, or frankly mind-blowing as Pilotwings 64 and Mario 64 were at the time I'd a) already have one and b) be very happy with those two games for a very long time.

if NS2 has a launch window that resembles the quality of Luigi's Mansion, Wave Race Blue Storm, Pikmin, SSB Melee, Animal Crossing, and Eternal Darkness I will definitely be changing my tune. 👍

"remember on GBA they released again every 2D Mario and Donkey Kong?"

yes, I remember when they used to remake 10+ year old games.

suffice to say, I'm dissatisfied with what Nintendo has done in "the switch era," I don't really care that this is not the first time they've done DLC, and I don't really see the relevance tbh. ✌️ full disclosure I don't f with DLC usually and I enjoyed gaming (and life) more before the internet got "hooked up" to everything in it.
