Re: Talking Point: What Game Do You Wish You Could Forget?

Thaliard

@RadioHedgeFund To each their own, but to say FFVII is objectively the worst one of the PS1 era is pretty spicy. The game is pretty important for its portrayal of the death of a loved one and the simulated grief the player goes through. The whole gaming world was in denial, searching for ways to bring Aerith back. It's an artistic achievement and one of the first examples of a game using what makes the medium unique (player agency) to deepen the impact of the narrative. There's a reason why people are still talking about FFVII today and not VIII and IX as much.

Re: PSA: Pikmin 4 Has Already Leaked Online, Watch Out For Spoilers

Thaliard

@nessisonett This precisely. Granted, I think this stuff can be pretty cool. I spent many hours as a youth pouring over Silent Hill 1-4 lore, references, and fan theories. But to classify them as spoilers? A lot of the stuff is so obscure, you practically have to seek it out to have it "spoiled" in the first place. It's not traditional narrative and it relies on community efforts to even decipher it.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer Gets Creative With Vehicle Building, Fused Weapons

Thaliard

@michellelynn0976 It really boils down to how they use the previous assets. The FIFA example is terrible because they should've never been made in the first place.

For me, I always get flashbacks to Crackdown 2. Reuse of the same map with a new story and new enemies/mechanics. It was bare minimum effort and in a lot of ways worse than the original. It could've been DLC. True sequels should be mostly comprised of all new assets, mechanics, and should differentiate themselves from their predecessors, not build on top of them. Look at the Mario games for example. Aside from Galaxy 2 and the NSMB games, every mainline Mario game is distinct from each other, and even still, there's enough new in Galaxy 2 and the NSMB games to justify booting up the previous entries in their respective sub-series.

That being said, the iterative approach has worked before. A lot of people love A Link Between Worlds and it did change a lot from LttP, and the Yakuza series is successful in no small part due to the ways it directly reuses Kamurocho. This approach to design is just crazy hard to pull off without looking lazy because you really have to have a strong vision as to why it's necessary to iterate over going back to the drawing board and starting from scratch.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer Gets Creative With Vehicle Building, Fused Weapons

@PinderSchloss Remember when Pokemon Gold and Silver had present day Kanto after you beat the game? That was one of the most magical and surprising things in a game. Things like stepping out of Midgar for the first time and discovering there was a whole world to explore. I still feel like there's a way Nintendo can angle TotK to recapture some of this magic, but the way they're marketing it doesn't look promising.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Best Year In Gaming?

Thaliard

Man, people not showing up for 2007 in the polls. It's pretty much a tie between 1998 and 2007 for me. The games from those years just hold too much influence on the modern landscape of video games. 2008 deserves a mention as a wonderful coda to 2007 too.

Re: Square Enix Unveils Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion 'Launch Trailer' Ahead Of Release

Thaliard

@PinderSchloss From what I remember of the original, I wouldn't hold my breath. There are some areas to explore, but they're not exactly expansive and there's quite a bit of going back to HQ and selecting missions from a menu. Keep in mind, this is a PSP game at its core, so you're limited to what could've been done with that device (i.e. hardware limitations, design oriented towards pick-up-and-play portability), but it's a damn fine game.

Re: Halloween Terror Returns To Overwatch 2

Thaliard

@strollin_stu I totally agree with you. Playing F2P games most of the time feels like dancing with the devil, but you have to admit it's rather novel to be able to play something relatively high quality and largely uncompromised for zero dollars. When I was a kid, I didn't have much money for new games and playing online games was a pipe dream on my connection. Demo discs were king. Now I can't help but look at games like Warframe, Rocket League, or this and be amazed. I can play a Diablo game on my phone for no* money! It's easy to be cynical, especially as things get more dystopian, but it's also a little bit incredible how many more people can and do play games now.

Re: Halloween Terror Returns To Overwatch 2

Thaliard

@Slinkoy1 My God, the game is free! You don't have to buy all the skins. Hell, you don't have to buy any of the skins. Nobody walks into a clothing store and buys one of everything, nor does anyone complain about only whales being able to do so.

Re: Yoko Taro, Satoshi Kon, And Kentucky Route Zero Are Inspirations For This Gorgeous Sci-Fi Adventure

Thaliard

It always seems to me a terrible idea to directly compare your work to acclaimed projects/artists in a press release. You are literally inviting people to see how you stack against the best in the business. It also comes across like they don't have enough to get people excited about a project on their own, so they have to resort to pulling names they haven't paid for to do the heavy lifting. Just let the work speak for itself. Don't waste my time by making me think of another thing I probably like better.

Re: Random: Reggie Fils-Aimé Played A Ton Of GTA During The GameCube Era

Thaliard

It's absolutely silly to believe that people who work for a particular company don't play a competitor's games. At the very least, it's important to keep up with industry trends.

That being said, it would kinda shock me to hear Miyamoto picks up any controller outside of work. The man IS video games; he doesn't need to play them.

Re: Random: Billy Mitchell Claims Doctor Won't See Him Due To Donkey Kong Cheating Accusations

Thaliard

@RupeeClock Nothing in the Hippocratic Oath (old or new) says you can't refuse to treat a patient. The reason seems silly, but if you've been treating the same person for 30 years, you develop a relationship with them, and if they were to do something that would compromise your ability to impartially treat them, it is in the doctor and patient's best interest to see other people.

Also, the guy's probably being annoying and bragging about his record every time he comes in. The doctor might've wanted to fire him for years, but didn't have a good enough reason to justify it in his mind. Seems like a good opportunity for a clean break.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Highlight Of Your Game Collection?

Thaliard

Probably the most prestigious item in my collection is a sealed Japanese copy of Rule of Rose. I'm pretty opposed to owning sealed copies, personally, but considering I can't play it anyway, it seems like a shame to bust the cellophane. It was a gift 13 years ago from my then-girlfriend/now-wife and it was supposed to be a US copy. I'm kinda grateful it wasn't, otherwise I would've busted it open on the spot.

Re: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge Sells Over One Million Copies

Thaliard

@thinkhector Word of mouth does wonders. If I'm playing a game on GP and I'm talking about awesome games I'm playing recently or they come over and play it and don't have GP, there's a good chance they're going to buy it on the platform they can play it on. They might've lost the sale on me, but they'll potentially pick up a sale from multiple others.

Also, I'll sometimes buy games on GP just to play on a more comfortable platform, like Switch. I can't be the only one.

Re: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge Sells Over One Million Copies

Thaliard

@IronMan30 That's an excellent point. People have been saying for years that piracy has minimal effect on game sales; why would Game Pass be much different?

My counter-point would be there's no "moral obligation" to buy a game that you enjoy with Game Pass, although I've definitely found myself buying a game I've played on GP so I can play it on another platform, to prepare for when it inevitably gets rotated out, or just to throw the devs a bone for their excellent work, so maybe that argument doesn't hold up either.

At any rate, exposure is never a bad thing and you can bet that the word of mouth GP and like services provide probably do more to bolster sales than harm.

Re: "Lightning-Fast" Action-FPS Bright Memory: Infinite Is Coming To Nintendo Switch

Thaliard

@Serpenterror I always assumed that they made it current gen only because it's a very small team and they would have to compromise too much to make it run on last gen. Bright Memory is buttery smooth on Series X and looks fantastic given the size of the dev. I can't imagine that they're getting it on Switch without some serious compromises. It seems like it's still lucrative to develop for PS4/XO due to the scarcity of consoles/ubiquity of last gen in households and you're potentially leaving a nice chunk of money on the table if you're already willing to compromise to get it on the Switch.

Re: Konami Is Reportedly Working On Three Silent Hill Projects

Thaliard

@JaxonH I totally respect your point of view, but I'm gonna have to disagree a little. As far as a "game" in the mechanical sense, totally agree. From a pure mechanics perspective, the game is not great, even compared to its contemporaries, but the atmosphere and the way the story told elevated games as an artistic medium and is still highly influential today.

I will admit it's probably hard to play it nowadays and still see what the fuss was all about, but that's true of a lot of poorly-aged classic media. The first Evil Dead movie is about as boilerplate of a horror movie as they come nowadays, but it was praised for how original it was at the time. People took the ideas, improved them, and the once-original concept is aged by its own influence.

That being said, the series is pretty much a one-trick pony and there's not really anything that can be said that hasn't already been said at this point. It's dead and needs to be buried, but it deserves an impressive headstone at least.

Re: Konami Is Reportedly Working On Three Silent Hill Projects

Thaliard

@JaxonH On the outside chance that you aren't just trying to rile up SH fans, the series is incredibly important to video games as an art form. I can't think of a game before SH1 that used symbolism in storytelling as well or relied on their audience to have the intelligence to piece together what actually happened in the story by taking what little you were told explicitly, combining it with non-obvious clues from the environment and cutscenes, and making theories. The game essentially had a wiki before wikis existed, encouraging fans to come together and share their theories to get to the bottom of what really happened.

Re: Nintendo Says It Wants To Avoid A Repeat Of Wii U With Switch's Successor

Thaliard

@wonderclassic I think the key difference there is the Wii brought in a ton of people who don't typically play games who saw the Wii U and said "but I already have a Wii/Wii Sports works fine on my old Wii". The name and marketing being bad is going to hurt a lot more when the majority of your demographic is uninformed.

That being said, just the other day, I saw a GameStop employee explaining the difference between the Xbox Series X and One X to a customer, so the naming confusion is still alive and well.
