After months of anticipation ahead of its release on June 16th, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge has proven to be a monumental success, selling over one million copies after just one week.
"Publisher Dotemu (branch of the Focus Entertainment Group) and developer Tribute Games, in partnership with Nickelodeon, today announced more than 1 million copies of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge have been sold after one week, as fans celebrate the long-awaited return of classic TMNT beat-em-up action."
Dotemu also posted the milestone in a tweet and thanked fans for their support, along with Nickelodeon and developer Tribute Games for making the game happen.
Tribute Games' co-founder Jean-Francois Major also had the following to say:
“Tribute Games set out to make the ultimate celebration of a chapter in TMNT history that means the world to us, and it’s been wonderful to watch the accessible fun of beat-em-ups resonate with longtime fans and genre newcomers alike. We’re thankful for all of the support and encouragement the passionate TMNT community has shown us since the reveal of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, and we look forward to watching players continue to discover the easter eggs we’ve hidden throughout the game while chaining together some bodacious combos.”
Keep in mind, of course, that Shredder's Revenge became available on Xbox Game Pass on day one, which makes the accomplishment even more impressive. It also helps that it's a ruddy good game; we gave it a 9/10 in our review and called it "best Turtles beat 'em up ever made".

"Sold" does that include everyone who played it for free on gamepass...
❗️And when it releases on GameCard
💾, I'll make it +1.
@Rika_Yoshitake if you read the article, it actually says that Gamepass did not count for sales.
“ Keep in mind, of course, that Shredder's Revenge became available on Xbox Game Pass on day one, which makes the accomplishment even more impressive” from the article.
"Keep in mind, of course, that Shredder's Revenge became available on Xbox Game Pass on day one, which makes the accomplishment even more impressive."
Does it, though? Sure, plenty of people subscribe to Game Pass but how many people own a console without it? A considerable amount of people, I'm sure. I get that the narrative around certain subs/consoles has formed, but does data really back those beliefs up? That Game Pass somehow reduces sales. I say that because last I read, that assumption was false.
That's awesome! But I do wonder the breakdown per console/PC purchase
@IronMan30 GamePass has a separate reporting system. Same with PS Plus.
I enjoyed it on pc and switch!
Well deserved! This game just oozed love for the Turtles and was so much fun to play.
Now that's turtle power! I wonder how many copies turtles in time sold back in the day.
@progx not at all the question I'm asking.
well done to them all
95% on switch i'm guessing, it's the dream machine for these small / indie games for sure!
Absolutely brilliant game (just an FYI I haven't bought it, I'm one of the game pass crew)
@IronMan30 switch has over 100m units sold.
it's easy to understand, you will cannibalise your own sales offering a subscription service AND a physical.... makes no sense! of course people will not buy the physical
Hence the switch here, and this is actually better for the developers. they are making more money. switch is the best machine for these smaller and indie games, you see how much success they are having and people actually buying their games!
Played digitally on gamepass, bought physically on Switch and waiting until it ships.
@Sakisa nice, wont touch a subscription service for games.
digi + physical on switch for sure
Congratulations to the team! It's well deserved my buddy and I had a blast going through it.
Congrats now they should eat pizza to celebrate! 🍕
I expected this and I'm pretty happy to see that it did happen. Hopefully it keeps selling well so that a bigger sequel or DLC happens.
I got it on xbox physical. will probably get it digital on xbox down the line so i can include the series S if i go anywhere.
waiting for a reason to have it on the switch as well.
edit: ugh...just woke up from a nap. my sentences need fixing.
@ViewtifulCool well, what I'm saying is I don't think Game Pass negatively impacts a multiplatform game's sales. There is no data to support the assertion that it does hurt sales, from what I've heard.
Congrats. Hopefully this means more oldschool games of great franchises, that are not just remakes or ports.
This game is a birthday wish of mine.
One of my favorite games of the year. Congrats to the team and here's hoping for a sequel.
Awesome! I finished my Leonardo run yesterday, gonna go through it with Mikey now. Amazing game, and congrats to Dotemu, Tribute, and Nick!
I havent played yet but look forward to it.
Bought it physically on XBOX, waiting for it to arrive.
GamePass is a great idea and concept for older games but I do fear the future implications to gaming when everything just becomes a monthly fee for access to any and every new game.
It can be great for indie producers to get their games and names out there...but I could see the weakening of games because of this.
I think games should be on the physical/digital market for 2-3 years prior to them being on any GamePass or Playstation Plus.
What?
Just no. There is ZERO way that with 23 million people getting this game for free day one on PC and Xbox that it sold a million ADDITIONAL copies.
1 million copies in a week is a HUGE number. It's not unheard of, but it generally takes per-order numbers so huge you've already heard about how it's going to break records. Stardew Valley, as an example of an "out of the blue" hit, sold 1 million in it's first 3 weeks. AND 23 MILLION PEOPLE DIDN'T ALREADY OWN THAT. There isn't even a physical cope for the "it's on game pass but I want it physical" people to be uping this number.
This is clearly a million DOWNLOADS, with some magic with how they get paid from Game Pass making the word "sale" not an all out lie.
@JH1022
Is there a single Game Pass game that you can't just pay for?
Like ... one? A single example to fuel this otherwise baseless fear?
In fact ... you get a 15% discount when you buy games that are on Game Pass (after 1 month), so in the case of a $70 game, signing up for game pass day 1 for free (with a 3 day card you can get from Bing or 100s of other places), then paying for a month, then buying the game when the discount hits is $69 with $11 of that not taxable, so you save around $2-3 depending where you live.
WHAT A NIGHTMARE WORLD, where you can play games for a month before deciding to buy them for less money!
@IronMan30 Why would someone who has Game Pass purchase the game? They obviously lost sales (not profit thought since they still get paid by Microsoft.)
Yeah already got it on Steam and GamePass but still waiting for my Switch physical copy.
@HeadPirate Yeah, so people with Game Pass might one month from now buy the game at a discount. That has nothing to do with sales that happened this week. If you are purchasing games that are appearing on Game Pass the first week, you should just cancel your subscription.
@thinkhector
What ... are you talking about?
@thinkhector that is an odd way of thinking. why would game pass stop someone from buying what they had always planned to buy?
@Nalverus I know people who have Game Pass to try new games but still buy physical day one releases or pay for games to get physical pre-order bonuses when they know they want it, but I would hope most people who have Game Pass and want a digital copy of this game would at least wait until there 15% discount kicks in next month to buy it ... but hey, do with your money what you wish.
Copies? Copies of what? There's no physical version yet.
@IronMan30 That's an excellent point. People have been saying for years that piracy has minimal effect on game sales; why would Game Pass be much different?
My counter-point would be there's no "moral obligation" to buy a game that you enjoy with Game Pass, although I've definitely found myself buying a game I've played on GP so I can play it on another platform, to prepare for when it inevitably gets rotated out, or just to throw the devs a bone for their excellent work, so maybe that argument doesn't hold up either.
At any rate, exposure is never a bad thing and you can bet that the word of mouth GP and like services provide probably do more to bolster sales than harm.
@vio So, uh, you can't make copies of a ROM?
Also, Limited Run does have a physical version coming.
@thinkhector Word of mouth does wonders. If I'm playing a game on GP and I'm talking about awesome games I'm playing recently or they come over and play it and don't have GP, there's a good chance they're going to buy it on the platform they can play it on. They might've lost the sale on me, but they'll potentially pick up a sale from multiple others.
Also, I'll sometimes buy games on GP just to play on a more comfortable platform, like Switch. I can't be the only one.
@Thaliard @IronMan30
Game Pass data of the type you're looking for is available though the @ID pipe, so if you want just set up free account and you'll get MS's analytics. They are meant to SELL Game Pass to developers though, so you have to take them with a grain of salt.
Basically the big claim is that releases the game on Game Pass gets you a targeted ad to your core demographic to 23 million people. That GENERALLY costs around $2.3 million with descent contract tracking, or $230,000 on just an open bid, so that value is huge. They also show that what you get paid from MS more then makes up for "lost sales". And with Game Pass imposing no restrictions on what other platforms you can release on, it's hard to see any reason releasing on game pass would be a negative.
That said, we DO know, from 30+ years of data, that games with day one demos sell MUCH worse then games without them. That demographic breaks down such that offering a demo is the right way to go with a small amount of games a same amount of time, but for the most part putting out a demo costs you money. That might be the biggest reason we see developer reluctance towards Game Pass.
@HeadPirate I'm enjoying your disbelief, and I think I would even if this game wasn't made in my backyard. I know Dotemu is not the most well-loved of publishers, but lying publicly about something of this magnitude would be the death knell for their credibility. Also, Limited Run (not my favourite company, but regardless) does have a physical copy coming.
There's an entire world out there beyond GamePass and MS, especially when you consider how many are averse to the platform owner. Strange that I'd have to explain that on Nintendo Life...
@Thaliard Yeah, but that takes time. Word of mouth takes time. This is just the first weeks sales ONLY. I mean subscription models are, everyone has a different version of it. So we shall see if it's just a fad, or the future, or just another part of the whole. I don't think more options is really an issue.
Played on gamepass but will buy on switch when the physical version comes out.
@thinkhector of course you may not. In any case, plenty of people DON'T subscribe to Game Pass and own a non-Xbox console/ just don't game on PC, so that means in the larger scheme of things, GPU's impact might be negligible. Without having data, you're using common sense. In my experience, common sense is often exaggerated or just flat out wrong.

@CANOEberry
Dude I hope this games sells a billion billion copies and everyone who worked on it gets a gold plated helicopter and the fans get 10 more sequels. Played it with my wife last night and it was a blast.
But numbers are numbers, and I've been in the industry 30+ years. No one is LYING, if MS is giving them money based on downloads and it says "sales" in the contract, then downloads are sales. Using technical language to fool the public and control your narrative isn't lying, it's just business.
This game selling 1 million full price copies in a week with no physical copy (so the whole physical only crowd has yet to buy it) wouldn't get a tweet. It would get a ticker tape media event as the once in a lifetime achievement for everyone working on this game and the publisher that it is.
Tribute games has 6 employees and a $1.2 million yearly income. So even after publisher and licencing fees, if they just made $9M or so in a week ... well, power to them, but I'm pretty sure friends in Montreal would be calling me ...
@JH1022
If you write that again with no personal insults and maybe include some data supporting your claim (like a list of games that have some 1m in a week) then I'll be happy to give you some insight.
If you want to trade insults over the internet even though you clearly have no real data and are just making up numbers ... well, then, "your mother"
Well deserved and then some! Awesome modernization of a classic.
I know they've said they have no plans for DLC before, but I’m still hoping they're still considering adding more content... i.e. variety in level design, some more vehicular/racing stages (Turtle Van w/ Weapons, Surfing, Gliding), maybe some vertical/platforming to mix things up etc.
Also wishing for lots of cosmetics, costumes to unlock like skins, palette swaps and accessories along with a steady diet of new unique characters to the lineup (Venus, Slash, Spike, Dimension X Teens, Oroku Saki, Hamato Yoshi etc.) + additional bosses, sub-bosses and transformations, and more achievements too.
Hopefully this does well and inspires a resurgence & renaissance of cool, fun, new licensed arcade brawlers updated and coming to Switch with modern features (X-Men, Simpsons, Bucky O'Hare, Battletoads)... basically call Konami and others lol!
… Wun can only hope.
@wuntyme8 They said that at the time of release there were no plans, but that it's definitely possible to happen at some point based on reception and feedback according to a tweet. This is what they said :
"Some clarification here: There won’t be alternative costumes at launch and we don’t have DLC plans so far, but we never said “never”😉 It will depend on many factors like the game's reception and the ideas/feedback that the awesome community will send us."
@EmoGamer thats exactly why nobody plays story. there isn't a threat of losing.
Really good game at a more than reasonable length (for the style of game) i got it on PS5 and am 1 trophy away from the platinum. Very well deserved sales indeed.
@CANOEberry You can, but it is industry standard to use the word "copies" when referring to physical media. And yes, I know a physical version is coming. I've been patiently waiting for it.
Played it with the family on gamepass. Great game we all enjoy!
Deserved. Shame about the GOTY
Great to hear. Even though I could have played this on Game Pass I bought it anyways on Steam for PC. Will pick it up for Switch as well for the best couch co-op option. I still think we could see some DLC early next year kinda like with SoR4 did a good while after release.
I’ve played it on Game Pass and preordered the cart on Switch. Hope we get a release date soon.
I bought it on PC and PS5, really great game.
it is industry standard to use the word "copies" when referring to physical media
@vio Yes, they could be clearer about these things, certainly. It would be nice if the industry followed more reporting standards... or just positive standards in general, yeah.
@Rika_Yoshitake i don´t think so....290.000 sold (Steam Store)
This game is incredible and I loved every second of it. I love it when passionate creators and passionate fans collide in the best way possible.
As it should sell this well
It's almost as if people were waiting 30 years for something like this...
@roy130390 I would like a secret double boss battle of 2003 Shredder and Karai. Krang Subprime would be nice as well since they all crossed with the 80's turtles at one point.
@Nalverus Because of all the great games that keep coming out? If you played a game on Game Pass and another game comes out that you really want but is not on Game Pass...well WHY not buy that game instead? Hmmm?
@thinkhector the concept of 'want' has gone clear over your head hasn't it.
Congrats to them. I picked it up on Steam last week. Not all my machines can run it(GPU issue I think), so I've had to work a few things out and found at least one computer that supports it(though it crashes after the opening FMV, so I need to skip it). Such is the nature of PC gaming, and on Linux, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It did look and play very well though for the few minutes I had it running a couple of day ago. I'm looking forward to finally playing it properly this week. The developers provided a nice set of options too. I appreciate the toggle for scree shake. I'm glad to hear they've found success with this.
GOLDEN AXE NEXT!
@HeadPirate If a Game is on Game Pass a month after release someone can purchase a game at a discount. It's part of the service. So why wouldn't you delay your purchase? You already have access to the game. This 1 million in sales is fo the first week of availability.
@EmoGamer uh... no. in nes, snes, and gen/md tmnt from konami, when you was out of lives an continues then you are DONE. period
no idea where you're getting that from. at that point you have "dropped out" because you game over'd.
People keep thinking gamers won’t 3D games with Ray tracing etc, I like a few modern games but most of the games I like have more simplistic or cartoon style graphics. I’m absolutely gob smacked Disney/marvel haven’t made a more modern Version of captain America and the avengers/X-men beat ‘em ups with a beautiful graphical style like this, same with dc justice league/Batman the animated series. Would much rather play game like TMNT any day of the week than any modern comic/cartoon adaptation. Even sponge bob, Garfield have 3D titles… would much rather play a cartoon looking game. This game is an absolute must. This is one of the reasons I lost interest in capcoms street fighter and modern MVC games.. because I prefer the older ones, with a more cartoon, comic look. Less expensive high tech graphical effects, more hand drawn animation.. and just more characters to play.. with a small amount of customization or talent trees, for the win. MVC3 should have kept the old style and just added more characters=win…. That’s the reason this game is so good, takes a great old school group of killer games and improves on them in every turn.
@Souflee that’s a brilliant idea 💡. I would love to see a modern golden axe like tmnt, a new X-men, captain America avengers type game with a big roster and a justice league/Batman animated all in these same styles.
@dluxxx mate the only better then this, is getting the TMNT collection to go along with it. As you said 30 years… for terrific games that should be evergreen. I put super ghouls and ghosts, MVC2, TMNT arcade, final fight, castlevania SOTN, KOTOR 1/2 all the same category. We have gotten a few modern releases lately which is fantastic. Luckily Nintendo has been pretty good at giving us collections lately, capcom too. A lot of these older games need the Skyrim treatment.. always re-released. It’s amazing that after 30 years of waiting for the tmnt arcade games.. we get a modern imaging that improves on the originals in almost every way. Love it.
