Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

Tanooki-Time

My Switch actually has quite a story, as do I. It’s a Day 1 model and about 3 years ago I was playing in Handheld on my recliner when a pickup truck veered off the road and smashed into my house, hitting me directly.

I lost my left eye and had major skull damage, but miraculously by brain, vitals, and extremities were mostly unharmed.

My Switch meanwhile sustained multiple cracks and scratches, but still works like a champ! I’ve been thinking about upgrading to an OLED, but I’m still somewhat attached to the little console that survived the truck crash with me.

P.S. I play in handheld 90% of the time, and my two pairs of Joy-Con still haven’t experienced any drift.

@Brumblescope

My sister just started the Link’s Awakening remake yesterday, and she came up with the idea to call it Wind Fish Island. With it being an island this time around instead of a “town,” I thought it was perfect!

I’m absolutely terrible at naming things on the spot, so it usually stops my progress entirely while I spend 20 minutes thinking of names.

Naming my horses in Breath of the Wild was brutal, haha.

@the8thark

“I'm just after a good, informative review that answers all the important questions.” More like a review that answers all of your own personal “important questions.” If you are so familiar with NL’s usual way of reviewing a Nintendo developed game - which you disagree with - why even bother reading and dissecting this particular review? Maybe just stick with Digital Foundry’s technical analysis, and a different, more critical-oriented reviews website?

For a relaxing series like Animal Crossing, frame rate is just such a non-factor. You almost can’t find another genre where there is less meaningful difference between 60 and 30 FPS when it comes to overall gameplay performance. If Alex didn’t go into detail on this topic, it should be safe to assume that it runs at 30 FPS with no problems, because I trust that he would’ve mentioned otherwise. I also believe that he probably hasn’t had a chance to properly put 8-player-online through it’s paces pre-launch.

Yes, the Switch is an underpowered console compared to its competitors, but that has always been by Nintendo’s own choice. They could build a more powerful and tech savvy console, but they don’t believe that having that much more raw processing and graphical capabilities is important, especially for a console that is completely handheld by design. Obviously you don’t agree with that stance, and that’s fine, but I usually do agree with it, because Nintendo continues to make games that are incredibly fun and impressive, no matter what.

None of these games would be any different to me if they were made for PS4 or Xbox One with better graphics and power, and I think a lot of other people agree with me on that. I’m sure you could say the same about your opinion though.

As far as docked vs handheld, I think most of us have a good handle on what differences to expect, and which form we prefer using.

I’m willing to discuss this topic further if you’d like, however, I’m no tech whiz, so you’ll get no “Geek Speak” from me. I’m also a Nintendo gamer foremost, with an Xbox 360 being the newest “other” console that I own.

Re: Review: Fire Emblem: Three Houses - The Zenith Of A Legendary SRPG Series

Tanooki-Time

I got started playing Fire Emblem with Sacred Stones and I loved everything about it. The strategy, weapon triangle, character backstories, perma-death, etc. Getting to know your units has always been one of the biggest staples in the series. (and I can’t really fault Three Houses for being so anime-esque because these games have always had that element to them) To me, a huge part of what makes each character unique is that they’d all have only a couple classes to choose from. A magic user couldn’t become an axe fighter - as mentioned in the review - because they’d spent their whole life studying magic. Of course they can’t suddenly re-class to axes. It’s part of who they are. It may seem like a very minor gripe, but to me it really takes away from who each character is.

Now, I realize that this was changed already in Awakening and Fates, both of which I enjoyed very much, but being able to re-class any unit to any class is a bit of a turn-off for me. I may still play this if it continues to become clear that it’s a great game, but it won’t be a day one buy for me.

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's Champions' Ballad DLC Marks The Conclusion Of The Game

Tanooki-Time

This actually makes me sad. I’ve spent so much time with this game and loved every minute of it. The Champions’ Ballad got me right back into it and somehow created a rather strong emotional attachment to these characters, leaving me wanting more. I’d love even more cut scenes and backstory with the Champions, and to really see what the world was like before the Calamity. I also wish there were scenes of the destruction actually happening, like at Hyrule Castle, and the Champions falling. Of course I was also hoping for new post game material to rebuild Hyrule. But alas, it’s not to be.

Re: Poll: Nintendo Switch Delivers Single Screen Gaming - Will You Miss the Dual Screen Concept?

Tanooki-Time

This is actually very disappointing for me. I've come to love having two screens, even if it's not used much. I think it's a missed opportunity that you couldn't hold the tablet upright with two screens being shown. And at this point, we don't even know if it's a touchscreen. Imagine if the Switch was powerful enough to function just an iPad or Kindle Fire. Nintendo would be raking in the dough, although that would mean it's not just used for Nintendo games.

Re: Say Hello to the Nintendo Switch, a New Concept for Gaming

The Splatoon that is shown is also at least an updated version. (Along with Mario Kart which shows King Boo and two item slots) The Inklings have different "hair" styles! I've been very skeptical about this system, after all, I'm nowhere near being done with my Wii U and 3DS, and I'm very sad to see them die, but I'm suddenly excited for this. I hope the battery life is insane in this thing.

Re: Nintendo Appears at Apple Conference to Announce Super Mario Run

Tanooki-Time

Look, Nintendo's really been struggling for a while because of the massive Wii U failure. They need to start doing things with their brands to simply generate revenue, and this a perfect example of that. Is it a sign of the end? Maybe, but Nintendo needs to be given credit for attempting to evolve, instead of just going down with a sinking ship! The main focus remains on hardware and grade A games. I do think some Nintendo magic is gone since Iwata's death, but I'll be a big time fan right to the end.

Re: The Next Splatfest in North America is About How You Like to Travel

@ThomasBW84 @AlexOlney Just wanted to report what appears to be a glitch with the new Carbon Roller Deco in Splatoon. I normally have a very stable internet connection, and rarely have any disconnects, but when using the new roller I was disconnected many times during matches. It always happened while using the weapon's special, bomb rush. If I would send out as many seekers as I could, over a long distance, it seemed to overload the system and I'd be disconnected. Anyone else having this problem?
