Like a lot of series, Super Smash Bros. is one of those that builds upon itself every time a new entry comes out, rather than radically changing the formula a la The Legend of Zelda, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is taking this idea to its zenith. By including just about everything that made Smash Smash over the series and bringing it all together, including the mammoth task of including every single fighter the series has ever had, it really is pushing to earn its title of 'Ultimate'. Does it seem worthy of the name from our early impressions? Oooh lordy yes.
Check out the video above where we look at the game and our experiences with it first-hand, including an attempt to talk about landing lag and frame data (emphasis on the word attempt).

Not a huge Smash fan if I'm honest as I can never seem to fully get into it, but will still pick this up on release day. You never know, I might finally fall in love with a Smash game lol.
I am really looking forward to this game but I just really want to know about what exactly makes each echo fighter different. Like, Daisy vs Peach. We know that they have the same movelist, and it was implied that there are some differences in gameplay but what are they?
Remember, the US is quite large. Not all Americans are near the sites hosting the demo. The closest site for me is a 5 hour drive, sadly.
I have a funny feeling that the next Smash direct will out do all the ones that have gone before it.
@GuruOfGreatness yeah me too, never got into smash. Have a few games like the 3ds one but just don't like it
Doesn't "Ultimate" mean "final", though? Maybe that's addressed in the video. I would have at least preferred a "Super Smash Bros. Penultimate" or "Super Smash Bros. The Next to Final Chapter" first, if that's the case.
TBH. With so few releases in the series I am probabaly in the minority to feel that the major selling points like “every fighting ever” is a over blown achievement.
If it was a game with 10 releases or the UFC game or WWE or Fight night.... it would be a massive achievement but I admit it’s cool but hardly unexpected...
I feel like at this stage with only a handful of games before it “ultimate” isn’t much of a claim... and leave the series not far to go.
I’m still hyped and have the Bundle controller edition and special edition guide ordered but I just think a lot of the big claims everyone is getting excited over are just PR spin.
I've owned Smash on every system since the GameCube, but I never play it for more than a few hours before placing it back on the shelf indefinitely. I love the characters more than the gameplay, which I assume is why I keep buying it. Already got the collector's edition pre-ordered...
@DrJiggle Try telling that to FINAL fantasy.
I need some meaty single-player options to keep this fresh for me. If it can't even manage to do that, then it's definitely not "ultimate."
uhh..... no ****?? seriously does this even need to be said?
@iLikeUrAttitude
1. water is wet
Wrong, liquids are liquid. Wetness is a term used for non liquid objects that become soaked or get water on their surface.
2. sky is blue
Partially true, but don't forget about sunsets
In other news slow news day uh?
@GrailUK For sure. They're gonna be saving the biggest surprises for last.
@Captain_Toad Touché!
Absolutely going to be my favorite game this year, my friends on Discord and I are incredibly hyped.
Ultimate. I guess the game has hit the end of the road. There is little more that can be done with it, apart from add a character now and then or a stage. If Nintendo are looking at the Switch lasting five more years then there is no need for a new Smash until the next generation console and this Ultimate Smash can be ported.
Title is an understatement.
"You can play at supermarkets", just an FYI, Best Buy isn't a supermarket. And besides that, for most of the country the nearest Best Buy to get a demo is further away than the entire length of the UK. (The line is like 4-6 hours long I heard at those locations) At least you're expos are close... No way I'll get a shot to play before launch. Ah well, nbd of course.
I'm so hype for this game.
@iLikeUrAttitude: I dunno, the sky has been various shades of grey here today.
It's not Ultimate until Bowsette is in.
Add Scorpion, or someone from Mortal Kombat, and then it can be Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Mortal Kombat (3).
Ha ha, Best Buy is not a super market.
I took my WiiU and SSB4 over to my bestie's house the other day for our gaming/cooking night, and came away adding another member to the Smash religion. She liked playing as Megaman, and I main Samus, so blasters out everywhere. Now she'll be buying Ultimate.
Only truly Ultimate once the Ultimate Lifeform becomes a playable character.
Imagine if you could take every character on the Smash Ultimate roster and their moveset and inject them into a 3D game like Breath of the Wild or Odyssey...
Jiggity
It's not Ultimate without Bowsette.
I cannot wait for this.
...well, yes I can, but I really don’t want to.
It’s not ultimate without Dixie Kong.
I’m so hyped for this game. It’s been such a boring year other than Smash (for me).
@BMO_Advanced Wow you must be real fun at parties.
Just in case you don't get it this is also sarcasm
But it’s not Melee so it won’t be the best right? At least if your recent list is anything to go by.
Smash on Wii U was mind blowing in terms of content. So much so, people were convinced it could never be topped, especially factoring in the DLC...
Yet here we are
This game not only outstrips Smash Wii U, it outstrips it even with the DLC combined. AND STILL adds more characters.
This might be the most content rich video game ever released, aside from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Both truly worthy of the "Ultimate" moniker
@Stocksy, I disagree I think it is a correct claim in a couple of ways, Smash Bros Ultimate has a crazy amount of character fighters we already know that there is more than 70 that is a huge roster for a fighting game of this type and we know there are over 100 different arenas also huge, one other thing to consider is we have all these different licensed characters together in one game that literally cover the gaming spectrum from Mario to Pac Man, Megaman, Snake, Bayonetta, Chrom, R.O.B, Samus, Donkey Kong, Wii Fit trainer, Inklings, King K.Rool, Simon Belmont and so on and so forth I mean thats not even scratching the surface of the roster . To me thats definitely Ultimate.
Don't crucify me, but this might as well have Deluxe instead of Ultimate. Not a bad thing at all. I had the 3DS version, so for me it'll be an almost brand new game.
How about the single player mode? Pleease, let it be good! I wans't a fan of the single player, so I just fought bots/people over and over again...
I call it kitchen sink edition.
@JaxonH Agreed. I actually just finished doing some Crazy Orders on WiiU. I’m late to the SSB4 party, so I’m still plowing through content on my quest to git gud for Ultimate
I see Gritty, the Flyers new mascot in this video. The orange shirt, ginger beard, huge googly eyes, it’s all there!
It truly looks Ultimate, hell just the insane amount of detail put into each character and the third party fighters alone make this the Ultimate game
@Ralizah does it not have a single player?
I wish it had Blanka from Street Fighter. His moveset seems like it would be perfect for Smash and everybody loves Blanka.
So no Blanka and no Waluigi means this can never truly be Ultimate.
@OorWullie 100% agree with the Blanka comment- he'd fit right in and I'd take him over any other SF character other than Ryu. My personal "dream fighter" would be Mudkip/Swampert just because Alpha Saph on the 3ds was my 1st ever pokemon game and that was my starter poke. Was hoping he'd be in pokken tourn but that never happened.
@iLikeUrAttitude
In other news Water isn't wet because it is a liquid that wets things. Once you come into contact with water you become wet. And the sky is only blue during daytime because the sun lighting effect.
@EvilRegal 'eyyyy
@NIN10DOXD Bowsette FTW!
@alexolney
It is only 'ultimate' if custom moves are back.
I didn’t expect anything less than stellar impressions. Can’t wait until December.
@USWITCH64 I love the smash franchise but I concur that the 3DS version wasn’t the best. All the rest are spectacular though.
@locky-mavo no.
@Orwellianson more of a Booette fan? That’s cool too.
@locky-mavo Not really.
@locky-mavo I think it’s hilarious though.
@Orwellianson yeah, I think it's fantastic too, though a little bit much in some cases, if you know what I mean.
@locky-mavo oh I do, I do indeed. -shudders-
