the Nostalgia Critic has been entirely removed Honestly, I think this is a good change. I like the Critic myself, personally, but having him as the villain in AVGN II just didn't make any sense to me.
Just beat the whole thing myself and while the collection kind of felt redundant for someone who already experienced the first two games, I still think the $15 is worth the price for playing AVGN II (my favorite of the three) portably alone...and I mean "alone". lol
And this is just me, but I find these games more funny than frustrating...
Meh. I prefer my RPGs and battle systems to emphasize strategy and give me full direct control over my party than running around an arena like a crazy man, picking up all of these glowy discs more than my opponent to win.
Honestly, after how underwhelming Portia was, I don't know if I'm up for this one. Just about anything Portia tried to do was simply barebones to a degree and its aggravating "Identity Crisis" is everywhere; the game just couldn't seem to make up its mind on whether it wants to be an Action RPG, Farmer, Social Sim, or whatever else it tried to be. Jack of all trades, master of none (or better yet: Good at none). I was so hyped for it since its announcement and upon finally getting it at release, I couldn't help but feel disappointed.
All of this could also be said for Animal Crossing, Fantasy Life (3DS), and even Rune Factory, but those games have a lot more focus and direction in that I always had a clue and reason on what I want to do whenever I boot up either of those games. And yes, I get that Portia was meant to be open-ended in that you're free to "do whatever you want", but even with that in mind it feels like I'm basically left stranded in an empty world for no reason.
Either way, I'm hoping this Kickstarter campaign succeeds so that its fanbase can get more and more out of that universe, but I'm hoping Pathea Games makes some serious improvements and depth to the gameplay and features. This "a revamped combat system that allows the player to quickly shift between melee combat and 3rd person shooting mechanics" thing needs more meat; let us properly equip weapons and tools this time without needing to take up an inventory slot. Don't make material-making take as much time as waiting for the cows to come home. Implement more opportunities for us to earn enough Gols for just about anything without forcing us to take huge amounts of hours doing menial tasks.
I'm an American, but I'm probably going to sleep on this one.
I played it on my PS3 back then and honestly, I couldn't get into it. The battle system was an utter bore and the pacing felt monotonous to a degree. Despite having only played a bit of it as a rental, I actually liked the second game better for its combat being more involved.
Either way, it bites that Level-5 is has gone a bit down under
Meh. I played it on Wii U (never played the DSi Ware version) and though it wasn't bad, it's definitely a far cry from the first game and even Half-Genie Hero. The content is just way too small in terms of quests, level and story length and design, bosses, etc. I felt like this was an episodic series that never managed to further develop beyond this game.
I'm going with Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove for this one; I even liked it a bit more than Breath of the Wild. It's amazing how a Kickstarter-funded game resulted into one of the best indie games of all time.
@Clyde_Radcliffe "Switch deserves a better Bomberman game!"
Super Bomberman R may not be "great", but it is nice to get another one after the franchise missed out on last generation and even then, the many updates it received then made a huge difference.
If you want a bad game in a somewhat similar style to Bomberman, there's Flip Wars.
Finest Kirby outing for me is a three-way tie between Super Star SNES, Return to Dream Land, and Triple Deluxe, with Star Allies a close runner up.
Epic Yarn is still one of the "stronger" Kirby titles, in my opinion, if only for at least trying something a bit different without going "Sticker Star" for one bit. While I don't own the Wii copy anymore, I still have plenty of fond memories of it and Prince Fluff was definitely a cool lil' tyke of a guy.
Then again, Good-Feel has really become one of my favorite Nintendo devs for how well they managed to make Wario Land: Shake It!, this, and Yoshi's Woolly World (though I wish I wasn't disappointed with Yoshi's Crafted World).
Whatever. As long as these games don't force me to blindly throw eggs in the background and have me play a stage thrice to 100% it, I'm fine playing them when I can.
1) Paper Mario 2) Mario Kart 64 3) Banjo-Kazooie/Banjo-Tooie 4) Banjo-Kazooie/Banjo-Tooie 5) Super Mario 64 6) Perfect Dark 7) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 8) Mario Party 3 9) Donkey Kong 64 10) Diddy Kong Racing
Even today, Paper Mario happens to be my numero uno game of all time
Quite surprised to see this review cuddling up to a Nick racer, considering how "bleh" the first one looked in many ways.
...but I probably won't buy this until around the Switch's end of its life cycle. Aside from the "support" characters feature, nothing much about it grabs me.
In the meantime, I'll stick with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Gensou SkyDrift, Team Sonic Racing, and Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled for my kart-racing needs on Switch.
Eh, I've been playing through the demo from the JP eShop (only going up to the end of the first world) and I've had fun with it. I've been playing Challenge Mode in Technical Playstyle and I've been having a bit of a blast myself. There's a bit of strategy involved, no matter how you try to disregard it. The screens are "samey", no doubt, but the same could be said for the majority of the levels in Smash Ultimate's World of Light mode and even then, killing all enemies in one fell swoop is part of the fun. The game felt more rewarding when killing enemies the fastest. As for the VS Mode...yeah, I wish there were CPU opponents to face (as far as the demo goes)...
All that said, I do admit that the series does excel in being a single player grappling platformer, but at the same time it can't play the same cards forever (even though I'll admit that BaZooKa! wasn't the best change for it). I would say the same for Mario, Kirby, DOOM, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, and Puyo Puyo even, but those games' gameplay formulas still managed to be fun and fresh while adding a bit of new additions here and there.
I do want to buy the game now though, but because I'm an American that'll have to be at the end of October and even then, I'm unsure if I'm going to buy the game this month, especially considering that AVGN Deluxe I & II releases the same day and I'm a bit more excited for that.
Whatever the case, though BaZooKa! isn't looking to be a "good" entry in the series, I truly don't see this as a "4/10"; try 7/10. One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows will show you what a real 4/10 game looks like.
Whatever. I pretty much stopped buying Smash amiibo these days (especially since Custom Specials are no more, unfortunately), though I would like to get that Banjo-Kazooie amiibo.
@Heavyarms55 I'd like a female Pokemon Trainer amiibo to go alongside the male one I got.
Really a great game. It's very frantic and satisfyingly intense, especially when you're playing the harder levels on offer. Personally, I'd like to see Lost Levels get some recognition, as well as more reasons to spend accumulated coins besides "head starts".
Still, it's a shame that this will all disappear come March 2021, especially since I liked this much more than Tetris 99 for being more fair and focused.
Nintendo's always had some...peculiar commercials from what I've seen, though I'd admit that the Smash 64 commercial is one of my favorites. I wish they did something like that again.
Looking at the "Worst Commercials" list, though, I'd say that I enjoyed them for quite a bit despite not being good. Then again, any Nintendo commercial is still better than Bowser's Inside Story's (DS) commercial. Holy crud, that commercial was just bad
I played a few matches. I had a good time with it and I can't wait to play more upon booting it up again. Despite it being too formulaic in some places, the added twists to the tried-and-true Mario formula do help add to the fun and strategy, and it can get very intense in the higher ranks (especially since your timer can tick down faster and faster as you approach victory).
It would've been nice for there to be more use for your accumulated coins than just giving yourself a head start, though, plus I personally would like to see levels from The Lost Levels to feature.
Aside from all of that, I'd better get all the fun I can get before its closure in March 2021...which pains me greatly because I actually enjoyed this much more than Tetris 99 for being more fair and focused
I worship you, Nintendo Life, and I will continue to do so (despite myself disagreeing with some opinions, but whatever), but the battle system for Bakugan Switch alone is an automatic "No" for me.
Constantly running around the battlefield collecting glowing discs is not fun at all and while I haven't watched much of the anime itself, this game's battle system does not represent the franchise and its appeal well. If anything, the first five minutes of the Bakugan game on 360 completely destroys this joke of a game.
Now, I'm not against people who enjoy this game because at the end of the day, everybody has different tastes...but for me, I'm simply passing up on this and never buying it, even if it was discounted to $5.
Bakugan deserved so much more than this on Switch, in my opinion.
It's definitely a great game for those "simple" pick-up-and-play sessions and it's definitely the best "Smash Bros alternative" on Switch by far.
Getting the Fighters Rank up is quite a grind, though, and I would like to use the B/Y controls to ease my thumbs from the A/B controls as an option like Star Allies did (otherwise, I'd have to go to the Switch's controls settings to remap buttons, which both benefits me in-game and confuses me outside of the game).
Hopefully this game gets more and more updates in the future because I think this game has the potential to benefit from something even further...
@hadrian Eh, the "5/10 at best game" you're looking for is Brawlout. It's basically a direct clone Smash Bros that didn't work out, unlike the Kirby Fighters games where they're all playable and good.
@jimtendog Yeah, my island could definitely use Katrina and Club LOL, though personally I think every other New Leaf shop in New Horizons could go the "consolidation" route like Dream Suite did (Leif can move back to Nook's Cranny, Labelle and Kicks can collaborate with the Able Sisters in some form, and Brewster can go back to the Museum). If Harriet of Shampoodle is returning, I'm hoping she can offer more hairstyles and hair colors without setting up shop.
As much as I'd like the Town Ordinances back, the only ordinance I ever used was "Keep My Town Beautiful", which has been present (give or take) in New Horizons now that flowers no longer "die" and such. As far as everything else goes (Early Bird, Night Owl, and Bell Boom), I feel that some of those are accommodated by New Horizons already. You have the Drop-Off Box to sell your stuff anytime, so (aside from being unable to buy stuff earlier or later) no need for the time ordinances. There's already plenty of ways to make bells throughout the series, so the wealthy ordinance is pretty much redundant.
Going back to the "unlocks" thing, I won't lie when I say that it's rewarding to unlock more stuff in New Leaf, but New Horizons' unlocks didn't put much weight on me as I was playing and even then, I still felt like I was working towards something in NH. NL, despite having plenty of unlocks, felt like a "one and done" deal for me as by the time I unlocked everything in the game, I was kind of "done" with it and the only time I ever booted up NL was for the Puzzle League mini game (Welcome amiibo) whereas aside from that, I was basically walking around my town and look at everything before saving my game and turning it off.
Definitely still playing it. Can't wait to see what the next update will entail
@jimtendog Eh, New Leaf had plenty of things to unlock, but most of them were just terribly tedious (especially Museum 2nd floor, which requires you to talk to Blathers on 14 different days and donated 20 items between each of the four exhibits, and finally paying 198,000 bells...my goodness...).
That said, New Leaf's an amazing game back then and I do like unlocking things in many games, but if I have to give up a great deal of the unlocking for a more cohesive experience at the end of the day, I'll gladly do so and that's one of the many reasons New Horizons is my favorite game in the series for streamlining many of the elements in the series.
Surprised you'd even talk about RPG Maker seeing as you make fun of people for being proud of their Mario maker levels they create. I've been making fun of people for being proud of their Mario Maker levels they created? Really? I'm going to need to see proof because throughout my years of Mario Maker and since then, I don't recall "making fun of" people and their levels.
Not sure what your deal is belittling others on various communities. Newsflash: That's the internet. People are always going to have different viewpoints on anything they come across. Some people like Mario games while others don't. Some people like Zelda games while others don't. Some people like Pokemon while others don't. Some people are civil while others are toxic. That's the internet.
@Ulysses As a huge Yoshi fan since birth, I'd be more than willing to accept Yoshi's Crafted World's "cozy personality" if the rest of the game was up to snuff in terms of gameplay, challenge, and lasting impressions. Unfortunately for Crafted World, it fulfilled neither of those categories as they did more harm than good to the final product.
The gameplay is some of the worst ever seen as many of the series' skill-based elements in its trademark gameplay are swapped in favor of a tacked-on shooting gallery idea that you'll be using far too often to remotely get anywhere in the game and often brings the pacing down to a halt more times than not, and not even its "mini game" levels were enough to light any candles due to their tedium and redundancies. The fact that the game forces you to go through a level twice at the least to 100% it (as well as its Blockefeller missions being unable to be undertaken more than once per world) is disgusting.
The game also suffers from a non-existent difficulty level (even for Nintendo platformer and Yoshi standards) that only shows it when "looking for collectibles" and even that wasn't done well since they're either too cheaply-hidden behind blind spots or locked behind those timed challenges that will force you to restart the level should you fail. And this is all without Mellow Mode and the costumes in effect, both which are practically "Invincible Mode" on top of an already-pathetically easy game.
And topping it all off is the soundtrack, which is far too poor in both quality and quantity as they encompass too much on sour instruments and lack of tempo.
This is the type of game that would be acceptable on a LeapPad device of sorts, but on a Nintendo system (as well as a sequel to the amazing Yoshi's Woolly World on Wii U) that surpassed most of its preceding systems in its lifetime, Nintendo and the Yoshi series deserved so much better.
Definitely way more hyped for this than I already was. Adventure Mode, from the sounds of it, is definitely looking to be an improvement over the redundant and repetitive Adventure Mode from PPT (which is still amazing). I can't wait to get my hands on this at Christmas; this is definitely the Puyo Puyo and Tetris game the Switch needed.
I also find it funny how people here are claiming that PPT2 looks to be the "exact same game as the first". I don't get it.
Splatoon 2 was basically that and that got praised to the brim. Sonic Mania played it safe and that got thumbs up by many.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate was also that and that got acclaimed by the crowd. Luigi's Mansion 3 played it safe and that game was greatly received. Animal Crossing: New Horizons did the same thing and that amazed people. So, why not give Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 the same welcome?
Edit: Also, Blaster Master Zero 2 and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2...they played safe, yet so praised...
Edit: Before anyone asks, no, I don't hate any of the games I've mentioned since I rather enjoyed them.
"Con: A lesser version compared to its PC counterpart"
And that's when I'll stick to my PC version. I am glad to see an RPG Maker game come to the Switch, but the lack of plugins and custom assets further cripple the reasons for me to invest in this one (at least, at full price).
That said, I'm willing to buy this at a very low price if possible, albeit to "mess around with".
Not surprised by this review, honestly. I played and beaten it on my Wii U and while I did have some semblances of fun here and there, it just didn't leave me impressed overall. By far the definition of a "bland" platformer. Then again, didn't the Switch version receive some few "exclusive" content?
I'll still take Adventures of Pip over Yoshi's Crafted World, though.
Astral Chain was one Switch game I was somewhat curious in after how much amazement that NieR: Automata and even Bayonetta 2 gave me, and it further solidified my fanaticism for Platinum Games as a whole.
Upon playing it, though, I didn't really love it. It's quite flashy and action-packed for the appeals, but it just felt too repetitive and dull for me (even for Platinum Games standards) in that constantly swapping between the player and the legion got tiring through and through (especially since the legions are also your only way to jump across gaps, which is pretty faulty in design, in my opinion; why Platinum Games couldn't give us an actual jump button is baffling in many ways).
The progression also lacked focus as it can't seem to make up its mind on whether it wants to be a "detective game" or a "butt-kicking game", and the game just doesn't excel well in both of those areas. I'm always open to variety in any game I play, but when it comes down to the point where it's constantly changing up the gameplay for very little (if not, NO) reason at all, that's where a problem occurs.
All that said, I found Astral Chain to be an okay game and I did have some fun with it as a rental before beating it and taking it back. I just wish Platinum Games had done so much better with this product...
@Rika_Yoshitake There's quite a bit of reviews I disagree with on Nintendo Life's part, such as The Legend of Dark Witch 2, Brave Dungeon, Atelier Lydie & Suelle, Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded, Super Mario Party, Tetris 99, Yoshi's Crafted World, Umihara Kawase Fresh!, Astral Chain, Gensou SkyDrift, etc.
...but at the end of the day, everybody has an opinion of their own and the people who disagree with any opinion around are going to have to deal with it.
Eh, any collection that lets me enjoy the best versions of any classic game (give or take a few exceptions) is an automatic gold to me.
I wanted Super Mario Bros to let me start from any world without having to beat it and relegate me to "Hard Mode" (as well as fix up the pacing of two-player mode by passing the baton to the other player and vice-versa upon clearing or dying in a level). All Stars gave me that.
I wanted a real stage select option in Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, as well as reducing the need to beat the game eight times to access the "Letter Worlds". All Stars gave me that.
I wanted a stage select option in Super Mario Bros 2 and with infinite continues, as well as being able to swap to different characters from deaths instead of Game Overs. All Stars gave me that.
I wanted a stage select option and a way to let me start World 1 with any power up given at any time in Super Mario Bros 3. All Stars gave me that.
...and of course, this all on top of the unified save system and enhanced presentation, as well as a fun (at the time) 2-player Battle Mode in SMB3. Now, I am aware of the weird block-breaking physics in SMB1 and the inability to restart SMB3 with 28 P-Wings after beating it, but the good outweighs the bad for me and even then, those qualms aren't much I'd give a flying [BURP] about.
If all of this don't make Super Mario All Stars the best "remasters" of the Mario franchise, then I don't know what will...
Edit: I also played the Super Mario Advance games on GBA and while it's nice to be able to play them on the go at the time, their small screen resolutions clashed with the large resolutions that the originals left me contented for.
Whatever. I enjoyed it personally, so (for better or worse) I'm still interested in double-dipping on this on my Switch. I mean, it's not "great", sure, but I played far worst fighting games in this style throughout my lifetime as a gamer.
If you guys want a real "textbook example of style over substance" fighting game, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy (as well as Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle) can tell you all about it.
Sounds pretty cool, but I have my eyes set on the Skill Battle mode. Either way, this game is an instabuy for me. Puyo Puyo Tetris was amazing (enjoyed it much more than Tetris 99 on Switch) and this upcoming sequel is looking to be even better, in my opinion.
@fadedcolors It is the "same game", sure, and you know what? I'm perfectly fine with it. Any game that continues to build upon everything that made the predecessor amazing is good enough for me.

Re: It Looks Like There'll Be A Demo For Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the demo does end up happening, considering that its predecessor had one as well.
Either way, this game is already on my "must preorder" list.

I already played it on Wii U, so I got my fill for it already.
I'm not opposed to double-dipping later on, though, albeit under a sale.

As awesome this looks, I'll pass up on it for launch. It comes out five days prior to Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, which I'm far more excited for.

Looking at the "Worst Commercials" list, though, I'd say that I enjoyed them for quite a bit despite not being good. Then again, any Nintendo commercial is still better than Bowser's Inside Story's (DS) commercial. Holy crud, that commercial was just bad
Re: Super Mario Bros. 35 Is Now Live, Download It Early From The Japanese eShop
Re: Feature: Don't Underestimate Bakugan: Champions Of Vestroia - It's Shaping Up To Be A Cool Switch Exclusive
Re: Review: Kirby Fighters 2 - A Brilliant Bite-Sized Alternative To Super Smash Bros.
@NinChocolate YES!! PLEASE!! Blowout Blast 2 now, HAL!!
@hadrian Eh, the "5/10 at best game" you're looking for is Brawlout. It's basically a direct clone Smash Bros that didn't work out, unlike the Kirby Fighters games where they're all playable and good.
Re: How Well Do You Know Kirby?
10/10 for me.
...though the real answer to Question 8 of 10 is: Sakurai's bias.
Re: Ubisoft Appears To Be Teasing A Rayman Project
Whatever. Without Ancel on board, there's just no Rayman to me
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Fall Update Is 'Around The Corner', Says Nintendo
Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Fall Update Is 'Around The Corner', Says Nintendo
Re: Review: Hades - A Heavenly Trip Into Hell That's Utterly Essential For All Switch Owners
Eh, I'll probably buy this later. I'm neck-deep in the preorders list of mine and I'm currently playing through 3D All Stars.
Re: How Well Do You Know Your Indie Games?
7/12.
No love for The Legend of Dark Witch?
Re: Review: RPG Maker MV - A Potent Game Creation Tool, If You Have The Patience Required
@Zeldas_Crown
In fact, I think you tagged the wrong user...
Re: Review: Adventures of Pip - An Interesting Social Message Undermind By Bland Action
Re: Sega Shares Details On Puyo Puyo Tetris 2's Adventure Mode And Pre-Order Bonus
Re: Review: RPG Maker MV - A Potent Game Creation Tool, If You Have The Patience Required
Re: Review: Adventures of Pip - An Interesting Social Message Undermind By Bland Action
Re: Can You Name All These Super Mario Worlds And Levels?
17/18.
Only got the NSMBU level wrong, though. Then again, great game, but I could barely remember its level names
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Fall/Winter Games - All The Big Games Coming In 2020, And Beyond
3D All Stars, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Umihara Kawase BaZooKa!, and Sakuna are on my radar.
Re: Soapbox: Astral Chain Was The Game Nintendo Needed Most In Its 2019 Switch Lineup
Re: Review: Super Mario All-Stars - All That Glitters Isn't Necessarily Gold
Re: Review: Super Mario All-Stars - All That Glitters Isn't Necessarily Gold
Re: Review: Jump Force Deluxe Edition - A Textbook Example Of Style Over Substance
Re: Review: Takeshi & Hiroshi - A Short And Shallow Adventure Which Looks Better Than It Plays
That's a shame. That was the one game I was the most interested out of the recent Indie World presentation, which I wasn't impressed by, personally.
Whatever the case, I guess I'll be playing Oceanhorn in the meantime...
Re: How Well Do You Know Rare And Its Nintendo Games?
10/15
I'm ashamed.
Re: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Will Feature All-New Co-Op Boss Raids
@LEGEND_MARIOID I think many people are relying too much on the book's cover than the pages themselves.
Re: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Will Feature All-New Co-Op Boss Raids
Sounds pretty cool, but I have my eyes set on the Skill Battle mode. Either way, this game is an instabuy for me. Puyo Puyo Tetris was amazing (enjoyed it much more than Tetris 99 on Switch) and this upcoming sequel is looking to be even better, in my opinion.
@fadedcolors It is the "same game", sure, and you know what? I'm perfectly fine with it. Any game that continues to build upon everything that made the predecessor amazing is good enough for me.
Re: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
Instabuy for me.
Re: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Arrives On Switch This December
@RushDawg To each their own.
I'm more than willing to pay the full $60 on Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 if needed as long as I get plenty of modes and content at the end of the day.
Re: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Arrives On Switch This December
The first was amazing and the best Puyo Puyo and Tetris games on Switch in my opinion, so seeing this announced got me hyped to the MAX!!
