Sega has given us our first glimpse at the story and adventure mode of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, which is destined for Nintendo Switch this December.
The game's adventure mode was first teased during its reveal at the August Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase. We were told that we'll soon be able to "traverse space and dimensions never seen before in a new story, with a colourful cast of cute characters, bringing to life the power of Tetriminos and Puyos."
Now, a lengthy official description and feature list have been released, giving us plenty more info on what to expect. Have a read:
Reunite with Ringo, Tee, and a lovable cast of returning and new characters from Puyo Puyo Tetris for a new journey! The worlds of Puyo Puyo and Tetris have merged thanks to a mysteriously powerful being known as the Dimensional Parasite. With this threat looming, Ringo, Tee, and friends must traverse the world to pop Puyos and clear Tetriminos to rescue their pals from a dark corruption. But they’ll quickly learn that there’s more to their quest than meets the eye when they face the Dimensional Parasite, with new mysteries and clues to uncover as their out-of-this-world journey unfolds.
As a reunion of two puzzle legends, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 features a brand-new story that brings together the game’s vibrant cast and various gameplay modes for players to explore. With a new overworld map to navigate, new special mission conditions, and a progression system during the new Skill Battles, Adventure Mode brings a whole new layer of depth to the game’s campaign.
New Adventure mode features:
- Overworld: Navigate from stage to stage along branching paths and optional levels in a new overworld map, and replay stages freely for higher scores and better rewards! A separate shortcut menu lets players quickly access stages, check in on overall star progress, and more!- Skill Battles: Featured in Adventure Mode, players can utilize the play style they prefer in Skill Battles, earn EXP to level up character stats, and experiment with different difficulty levels based on the team’s strength! After practicing in Adventure mode, players can take their hard-fought finesse and ingenuity to Skill Battle mode, a new separate mode in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.
- Unlockables: Players will unlock Item Cards that give special abilities and options in Skill Battle, key to winning matches in the new Skill Battle mode. New playable characters, backgrounds, bonus stages, and more can be unlocked by players as they progress through Adventure mode while they earn credits to spend on even more cool things in the in-game shop!
On top of this, it has also been revealed that players who buy the Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Launch Edition will be treated to some extra bonuses. This special edition is available to pre-order on Switch for $39.99 and comes with a pack of eight in-game rare Item Cards, including three special cards featuring items from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
Towards the end of last month, it was also revealed that the game will feature co-op boss raids.

I'm not sure I like the idea of buying in game cards with money, even if it's just stuff you can get in the game anyway.
Just how rare are these cards?
Why would I pre order a game that's basically the same as the last puyo puyo tetris with a better story mode and a few extra features and modes early for $40 just for a few glorified pokemon cards with Sega characters.
@Kalmaro I agree, I hear 'cards', 'credits', 'unlock, and 'shop' and my suspicion is raised. Could be totally benign but those terms are all tainted to me now.
@HotGoomba You'd be surprised. People drop $60 for sports games that only update the roster.
Skill Battle was kinda bleh in Puyo Puyo Chronicle on 3DS, so I'm not exactly looking forward to it here. I still want to get the game straight away as a Puyo fan in general though.
Sega go away, and don’t come back until you have seen sense and bring back Ages
All I want is local party / 4 player mode... If it still doesnt have practice mode when you are eliminated then its a hard pass. I'll stick to Tetris Party on Switch.
@Kid_Sickarus If I remember right, the first game referred to the in-game currency as credits, and there weren't any micro-transactions in that game. I don't think Sega is so greedy they would put micro-transactions in a game like this.
Day one for me, love the new additions!
I liked the first one... Until I hit a level that just seemed totally impossible. I tried so many times, but never got close to the score I needed to pass that level. My brain just refused to process the chain reaction combos you needed to set up to pass that level.
@Kalmaro it says below the article's title that pre-order bonuses are exclusive to the launch edition so is a possibility that they may not be obtainable any normal way within the game, or atleast not right away but i am not certain if that is 100% the case.
This doesn't look like it has enough to justify being a sequel
@Lindhardt so knowledgeable, Linhardt, you’re my favourite Black Eagle
@Kalmaro What's next, people pay extra for all the special editions for the games?
@Chibi_Manny Yeah it's a little confusing. I'm not 100% sure if that means we can't get it unless with buy that edition or if the only way to get the in game cards faster is if we get that edition.
I may just be dense.
Definitely way more hyped for this than I already was. Adventure Mode, from the sounds of it, is definitely looking to be an improvement over the redundant and repetitive Adventure Mode from PPT (which is still amazing). I can't wait to get my hands on this at Christmas; this is definitely the Puyo Puyo and Tetris game the Switch needed.
I also find it funny how people here are claiming that PPT2 looks to be the "exact same game as the first". I don't get it.
Splatoon 2 was basically that and that got praised to the brim. Sonic Mania played it safe and that got thumbs up by many.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate was also that and that got acclaimed by the crowd. Luigi's Mansion 3 played it safe and that game was greatly received. Animal Crossing: New Horizons did the same thing and that amazed people. So, why not give Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 the same welcome?
Edit: Also, Blaster Master Zero 2 and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2...they played safe, yet so praised...
Edit: Before anyone asks, no, I don't hate any of the games I've mentioned since I rather enjoyed them.
@StephenYap3
I think the main differences between this and those examples are that Splatoon, Smash Bros, Luigi's Mansion and Animal Crossing weren't available in any form on the Switch before those releases, while on the other hand, PPT2 is going to be the Switch's sixth Puyo game and third Tetris game.
@EarthboundBenjy yeah I’d like for Sega to bring something new or some franchise not yet represented on Switch, but I’m still going to buy this..
If only i liked Puyo Puyo :/
Bought the first one because the concept sounded amazing and, well, never really played it much because i quickly realized that i not only suck at Puyo Puyo but also dislike it enough not to learn it properly.
A shame really, since the games overall presentation is pretty top notch!
It's a yes from me. I liked the first game so I shall be getting this one.
