Re: Review: Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot + A New Power Awakens Set - An Iconic Story Retold Well

StephenYap3

I've been a huge Dragon Ball fan myself and I really liked Xenoverse 2 and FighterZ on my Switch, but after having tried Kakarot as a rental (on another system), I can honestly say that I will wait for a very good discount on this.

The fighting mechanics had more smoothness to it, but it didn't feel as flexible or "responsive" as the Xenoverse gameplay, in my opinion, not to mention that having to fight the exact same robots (at least, during my playthrough in the "Raditz Saga" before taking the game back) got old and tiring fast for me.

That said, it's nice to be able to explore more of the "unseen" areas and content that the anime (Dragon Ball Z) had a hard time trying to cover. And while the voice acting (particularly Funimation's since I'm more familiar with that) and plot are top-notch here, that's simply not an incentivizing reason for me to buying this when I pretty much know the whole anime's plot and such, left and right.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Yesterday's Nintendo Direct?

StephenYap3

I give this direct a "D", but it was more "okay" than "disappointing" to me.

The N64 NSO part was nice to see, Bayonetta 3 looks sick-er than ever, and New Horizons' small showing of the Roost was cool.

The lack of Game Boy NSO and Smash Ultimate fighter reveal let me down, and (as a huge Kirby fan myself) the upcoming Forgotten Land looks enticing to see for being the first 3D mainline game, but so far it's not making me jump for joy.

Re: More Cotton Games Are Coming, Including The Extremely Rare Panorama Cotton

StephenYap3

Yipes. Looks like I've been missing out...

That said, hopefully Success and Studio Saizensen bring the first three Umihara Kawase games to the Switch as well.

Umihara Kawase Fresh! was still an excellent entry for the series in spite of its "changes" and while the multiplayer component was a neat idea, Umihara Kawase BaZooKa! just wasn't that good to me.

Re: Review: WarioWare: Get It Together! - More Magnificent Microgame Mayhem

StephenYap3

I'm glad to see this going well with Nintendo Life staffers.

Unfortunately for me, as much as I like Wario Ware myself, Get It Together! (or as I like to call it: "Get It Outta Here!") didn't leave me wanting for it due to its gimmicky multiple characters thing and the demo further honed down the reasons for me to skipping this entry altogether.

I do hope the others have a blast with it, though.

Re: 10 Best Wii U-To-Nintendo Switch Ports

StephenYap3

As someone who still owns the Wii U, I'm glad to see some of its games be given a "second chance" on Switch, with a bit more features/changes (better or worse), especially since my Wii U Game Pad's analog sticks don't work good no more.

I still hope more Wii U games are coming to Switch, though. I would love to replay Yoshi's Woolly World (didn't like Crafted World at all) and NES Remix 1 and 2 (Ultimate NES Remix didn't have all of the games, plus the Speed Mario Bros mode...isn't as good as NES Remix 2's Super Luigi Bros mode).

Re: Wah! A Free Demo For WarioWare: Get It Together Is Now Available On Switch

StephenYap3

Just played through the demo and unlocked everybody in the demo.

Hoo boy, I was truly on the fence for this one and I really wanted to give this game a chance to impress me, but the whole multiple characters thing that worried me since its announcement was more than enough to make this title an automatic skip for me.

The multiple playable characters thing completely destroyed the focus of the Wario Ware gameplay for me (shuffled microgames were good enough as is. That's it. Nothing else) as I felt that the game constantly trolled me at every turn. One character, I'm able to move around. 18-Volt, I couldn't move and had to rely on those floating rings to move around. And so on and on and on and on. The game doesn't give me enough time to relate to the characters as I'm constantly being swapped of them here and there, not to mention that I'm not given enough time to prepare for which microgame is coming up when playing as said swapped character. I'm somewhat more willing to tolerate the gimmicks as seen in Twisted, Touched, and even Game & Wario...but Get It, Together! (or more aptly, "Get It Outta Here!") is where I draw the line.

That said, I do hope that everybody else getting this game enjoys it to the fullest and hope that this game helps the Switch sell. As for me, I'll be getting Mario Party Superstars instead for my Switch party game needs.

Re: Mini Review: Ayo The Clown - A Breezy Platformer That Yoshi Fans Will Enjoy

StephenYap3

Honestly, I'll take all of the clowning around and such as long as Ayo gives me the "Yoshi" game I have longed for on Switch, which is something Crafted World utterly failed to give me (and I'm not just talking about the soundtrack and its poor handling of side quests, mind you).

That said, I'm not ready to buy this yet. I'm pretty booked on my preorders this year.

Re: Soapbox: A Strange Desire For Switch Sports And A Return To Wii's Wuhu Island

StephenYap3

I remember Wii Sports Resort. It was quite the game right there as it was Wii Sports in a bigger scope (for the most part).

As much as I'd like to return to Wuhu Island (why didn't Nintendo bring back its two tracks in Mario Kart 8?), I'd like to be able to actually explore the island on foot. Yes, I am aware of Bandai Namco's Go Vacation and as fun as it was, it just couldn't scratch my Wii Sports Resort Switch itch.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Switch Game Of 2021 So Far?

StephenYap3

Unless Blaster Master Zero 3 has something to say about it, Smelter is still my pick for 2021 GOTY. Who knew that Mega Man X and Actraiser could come together in a harmonious duo in this indie gem?

And if I could be honest as a huge Nintendo fan, Nintendo...hasn't left me impressed this year (so far). Many of their Switch-exclusive titles (I'm excluding 3D World, Miitopia, and Skyward Sword. Great games, but I'm focusing on Switch titles) haven't reached out to me in quality and while I did have some fun with Mario Golf: Super Rush, the whole thing was just a huge far cry from World Tour on 3DS for me.

Literally the only good thing I can say about this first-half of 2021 regarding the Switch is that the Switch didn't leave me "disappointed" (2019's Yoshi's Crafted World can tell you about it). Other than that, I am hopeful for Metroid Dread and Mario Party Superstars rekindling the fire for this year.

Re: Talking Point: Everyone Has A Bad Game They Love, So What's Yours?

StephenYap3

Paper Mario: Sticker Star (and Paper Mario: Color Splash, for that matter)

I actually enjoyed the resource management as it added a whole new layer of strategy for me to undertake (save for the Thing Stickers, which I only used for "puzzles") and being given a wide variety of attacks to take on enemies with was satisfying. I even liked it more than The Origami King.

Re: Review: World's End Club - A Real Looker Spoiled By Hit-And-Miss Storytelling

StephenYap3

I can't really blame the 5/10 score, honestly. After playing the demo, its "gameplay" (which I use nicely) was more than enough reasons for me to skip it. It's just so painfully barebones that Mr. Nutz on SNES and Sega Genesis became the next Super Mario World. Maybe the gameplay is enjoyable for some, but I'm not one of them.

Of course, I would say Vanilla looks like a cinnamon roll, but that's a usual tactic companies use to attract ordinary buyers -_-

Re: Review: Super Bomberman R Online - A Battle Royale Blast Defused By Long Waits And F2P Frippery

StephenYap3

I haven't played it much myself (I'm not much of an online type of guy; I prefer local multiplayer) and while I'm not as enthused into this freemium game as a huge Bomberman fan myself, I doubt this game is anywhere near a 5/10 or lower.

That said, it would be nice if all of Online's additions (namely power ups and hearts) would make their way to the other "Super Bomberman R" released prior.

@MrGlubGlub Dude, there are some reviews from Nintendo Life I disagree with (i.e. Majin Shoujo/The Legend of Dark Witch games, Umihara Kawase Fresh!, Gensou SkyDrift, and Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded, to name a few of the bunch), but they have just as much right to review any game as any other reviewers out there.

Re: HAL Laboratory Looking Forward To Sharing Kirby's "Next Phase" With Fans

StephenYap3

As a huge Kirby fan who enjoyed most mainline titles, I am both excited and worried for the next Kirby title in development. I am excited because HAL Laboratory has wowed me with the last four mainline entries for their always-fun Super Star gameplay, but I am worried that this new direction for the mainline games will change so much that it may not feel like a Kirby game anymore to me. I mean, I do kind of want the formula to change, but I still want to play a Kirby game at the same time.

Either way, as long as the next Kirby mainline game retains the expanded movesets per copy ability, the elemental effects from Star Allies, and the helper system, I'll be fine.
