Level-5's Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch certainly ranks as one of the best RPGs on Switch right now, and combines an uplifting story with gorgeous artwork courtesy of the legendary Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli.
The game is currently on sale, with a massive 84 percent reduction on its typical retail price. You can pick up this classic title for just £7.99 (€9,99) as opposed to the usual £49.99. This discount only seems to be active in Europe at present, with the game still retailing for the full $49.99 in North America.
We really liked the game when it launched on Switch in 2019, saying that: "Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is an experience unlike any other on the Switch, expertly blending standard RPG tropes with a heartwarming story, innovative art style, and an immersive soundtrack composed by some of the best in the business."
The game's origins go back to 2008, when the series was formally announced via Ni no Kuni: The Another World on the DS. This Japan-only title would eventually be released as Ni No Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn in 2010, with Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch hitting the PlayStation 3 a year later.
Speaking of Japan exclusives, you might want to savour this particular title while it's on sale, as Level-5 – most famous for its best-selling Layton series – appears to be turning its back on the west.

I wish we got Ni No Kuni 2 for the Switch.
Well thats that then. Ive been close to buying this a few times, but at this price!?! Today day is the day
£50 was a bit ridiculous anyway, it isn't even the remastered version. Can definitely recommend it at this price though, finished it on the PS3 and it's still one of my favourite games.
Seems like a nice deal but I really really disliked Ni No Kuni 2 therefore I'll pass on that
Bought last night. Great price. Keep adding to that backlog!
@roboshort I agree but we don't miss much by not having it, the game is fine but loses all of it's charm compared to the original.
Crazy that the RRP was £50! I got a physical copy at launch for £30.
£8 is an absolute steal!
@mariomaster96 I haven't played Ni No Kuni 2 myself, but a friend who has played both said they are completely different.
He hated 2, but loved the original.
Picked it up for €9.99 yesterday, seemed a total bargain and it will be a nice palette cleanser after Mario All Stars.
It's been on the Japanese e-shop a few times at a ridiculous price but had no English edit : ( Glad the deal has finally come to Europe! I will be using the region-free to its advantage and getting an even better deal! I think the sales are getting better for us is maybe covid or their software getting buried on the e-shop. I think there's something like 4000 games on there or something!
Check out ArtSystemWorks games on the Japanese e-shop sale. I picked up Guilty Gear a few months ago for a couple of quid!
So many sales... My wallet is like a volcano now lol.
Just bought starlink, what an amazing game that is!
I also want Asassin creed the rebel collection, its 25€ now. But already spent to much and next month i want Sniper elite 4 and maybe Pokemon sword.
Just finished this game last week! Really good game, had a lot of fun with it for 60 odd hours.
Sold! Enjoyed the PS3 version but it came at a time when I couldn't invest any time in it. Portable it's a no brainer.
I wanted so badly to like this game. The animation is gorgeous. I love Studio Ghibli. I found the battle system frustrating. And I didn’t enjoy the exploration, side quests, or character collecting. So basically all of the gameplay. There is so much backtracking. The game is quite challenging even at the lowest difficulty setting. I realized 10-15 hours in that I was really just pushing to get to the next cutscene.
@Damo - Heads up Ni no kuni for PS3 released in late 2011 and the DS one released 2010. Not 2008.
I think we were enjoying the godly Lost Odyssey in 2008? Or maybe it was Blue Dragon.
OT: Loved the game on PS3 and got it on launch day for Switch. Great game that unfortunately got a shoddy sequel.
Was always on my wishlist. I'll be playing this soon.
Great game and one of the best rpg's I've played, also the game which shows what Pokemon could be if it aspired to be more than what it is, though people just buy that regardless anyway
Amazing game don’t sleep on it !
@mariomaster96 I wouldn't write off the series based on the second game. Revenant Kingdom was a different beast.
The original has way more locations, a different battle system and more Ghibli charm. The post game is great too! Better than anything offered in the season pass for the sequel.
@XenoShaun Apologies, I was talking about the formal announcement of the project, which took place in 2008. Fixed!
It’s almost as if they knew I’d decided to pass on this in favour of my fat backlog. Time to add one more to the list...
Added to my massive backlog!
No NA? Okay i guess they dont want be to buy this game. And no im not gonna change my region or create europe account
I'm an American, but I'm probably going to sleep on this one.
I played it on my PS3 back then and honestly, I couldn't get into it. The battle system was an utter bore and the pacing felt monotonous to a degree. Despite having only played a bit of it as a rental, I actually liked the second game better for its combat being more involved.
Either way, it bites that Level-5 is has gone a bit down under
Wowsers! That's incredible!
It’s currently number one on the European eShop
@roboshort Big same, but I doubt it'll happen now. I don't think the Switch port of NNK did too well, and with Level 5 basically pulling back to Japan, I don't see it coming.
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked NNK2 a lot more than the first. Way better combat, and the open world was fun to explore.
Is it gone?
Changed my account to UK (game unavailable) to France (unavailable) to Portugal ($9.99, but credit card recused)
I'm from Brazil, but my account to buy games is from everywhere (mostly Mexico), since there is no real Nintendo store here. This never happened before for me.
Oh damn, instant buy. I've wanted to play it for years
Even though I liked the sequel a lot more, this is an amazing price. Now I'm a little sad that I already know that this game is not for me...
Oh wow! I was just thinking about this game the other day. If only I could have it physical but this price is just too good
i usually prefer physical but at that price no way im not buying it
@SwitchVogel I haven’t played it but it has an 81 on Metacritic so I guess it should be a good game. Did Level 5 say their titles would no longer be localized? Or Maybe they will just have a localization studio like Xseed handle their games? It seemed like they always struggled with doing it themselves.
@roboshort At this point, nobody really knows. I'd say it's always possible that other studios could pick up localization and distribution, but it's more likely that they won't. Unfortunately, Level 5 is pulling out for a reason; their stuff just hasn't really caught on here the way they need it to.
@Kimyonaakuma Wasn't it a budget release? I got it at launch, but there's no way I would have paid £50. Hmm now I'm wondering how much I paid...
What an awesome deal! Instabuy
@aristofeles Try South Africa, it worked for me when I bought Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea 5 at recent European sales. Also it's usually one of the cheapest eShops of the world.
Well this escalated quickly. Can't wait to find some time to play with kids.
I'll still get the physical version for my collection at some point, but for now...
"one of the best RPGs on Switch" Well that's depressing. This game was extremely average, sadly. I wanted to play it forever, but I never had a PS3. I was thrilled to try it out on Switch when I rented it on Gamefly and was underwhelmed.
Can agree with some of the criticism here. The AI of your party members (or lack of) can be frustrating during more difficult boss fights. There’s definitely backtracking. The battle system takes some figuring out. But despite all of this I really enjoyed the game. Just make sure you’re well stocked on food and mana pots - oh and definitely make sure you’re L60 for phase 3 of the final boss, got wrecked there quite a few times (P1& 2) I did low 50s so a large spike there
Woah. I have this game, a real bargain at this price!
I got this on PS3 but only got a few hours in.
I got the second one for PS4 but only got a few hours in.
Now I've bought this again on Switch, I'm hoping I'll get a chance to get more than a few hours in!
Been meaning to pick this up and would definitely bite on a digital version at this price...if this discount was in effect for North America. I want it, but not badly enough to create an EU eShop account.
Kinda tempted but sounds too hard and too long! Ghostbusters I think then! Xxx
This was on my maybe one day list, but now it's on the definitely today list.
It's a fantastic game with a timeless art style. I went off RPGs a bit post final fantasy 10.
This game pulled me back in.
I thought the UK had left Europe already? But we are still being lumped in together with them.
I got it yesterday. For what I've played, it seems to be awesome! Looks like a must have for that price.
It oughta get 84% knocked off its review scores.
Because it's an awkward and messy excuse for an RPG that gets a pass because of the colorful designs.
@Bass_X0 We're geographically still in Europe. What continent do you think we're in now, South America?
Already have it remastered on ps4 now as well as the second and the season pass. Haven't touched either yet, which is funny because I recommended it to a friend when it launched on ps3 and he got it and played through the whole thing. XD
@Bass_X0 Really??we're not leaving Europe 🤣. I picked this up last night as couldn't turn diwn that price. I'd held out for a decent price for physical copy. not started it yet though
@Bass_X0 The UK has left the EU... not Europe
@Bass_X0 we'll always be Europeans ✊
Does the Switch version have any extra content compared to the PS3 one? I’ve had my PS3 copy sat on the shelf for years and trying to decide whether to rebuy or just hook up my old console...
@roboshort , there's an old article that claims Level-5 was going to bring its main titles to the Switch. https://wccftech.com/ni-no-kuni-level-5-nintendo-switch/ However with recent news about the NA Level-5 being closed, the chances are looking slim. I'm still hopeful tho. 2nd game on Switch would be great.
Gorgeous? Looks pretty antiquated to me.
@Slapsillium same here been playing it this weekend amazing looking game great story so far
