Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Game Cards Limited To 16GB Size

StarDust4Ever

I see no reason why they can't have 64Gb cards. 64Gb would hold nearly 30% more than Xbone/PS4 current two layer BluRay media. 1.4Gb Mini discs were the primary reason why Game Cube didn't get better 3rd party support during it's lifespan despite games which looked slightly better graphically compared to equivalent PS2 games.

Even if large games cost $10 more to manufacture to use 64Gb cards, it would be worth it to increase the data cap if AAA developers demanded it.

Nintendo, DO NOT GIMP the Switch. You cannot afford to release another GIMPed system...

Re: EMiO Releasing NES Advantage-Style Joystick For The NES Classic Edition

StarDust4Ever

Circular gate? Microswitch buttons? I seriously doubt they crammed a Sanwa stick in there given it's low profile and lower price.

Call me intrigued though. But the A+B function is just useless IMO, and the joypad not having turbo for both buttons is an oversight.

Since the pad has four buttons anyway, they should have simply forgone the turbo switch and placed BB and AA above the primary buttons.

Re: Random: Game Boy Compatibility Warning Screens Are The Best

StarDust4Ever

I have the Game Boy Color Homebrew Chunkout. The developer posted a screen that said this game is only compatible with gameboy color. Here's a game to play while you save up to buy one...

Then it went to a little ball and paddle game Easter Egg only accesible on a gameboy classic or a Super Game Boy.

Re: Random: The First Skunk Bundle is Free on the North American eShop Right Now

StarDust4Ever

I download, prolly try these later. Is it really as bad as people say? The eShop rating for this game (out of 29 ratings) is abysmal, and usually they are overinflated. I've seen games with two stars (out of ten) on Nlife get four stars (out of five) on eShop. Why so few? Maybe a bunch of guys downloaded and then delete? IIRC you need to play a game for at least an hour to rate it in the eShop.

Re: Video: Take a Look at the Nintendo Game Counsellor Guide

StarDust4Ever

As I grew up, everyone had a NES but me. Finally started gaming in the 2000s and always noticed the 1-900 numbers for game help. Maybe I was a bit spoiled but sure glad I had Google search on multiple occasions. I've also bought a number of game guides on modern platforms because opening a book is so much faster (without the BS) than booting my laptop.

Re: Feature: A Close Look at New Super Mario Bros. Wii Coin World

@Findonovan95 Unfortunately Dave And Busters seems to be the only type of place to stock serious arcade machines, and the nearest one is 200 miles away. I would personally love to try out the new Luigi's Mansion game.

Most of the arcades in my area are all about ticket redemption machines and not traditional video games. There's the occasional cockpit style racing sim and a Pacman/Galaga cab, but video arcade games are sparce.

Over half of the pinball machines I find at pubs and laundermats either have weak flippers or major elements of the table are broken and mostly the video cabs are bass fishing, buck hunting, or golf sim. Yuk.

Re: Feature: A Close Look at New Super Mario Bros. Wii Coin World

StarDust4Ever

@mechamen8 Look how long a "credit" will last on a traditional arcade machine versus a slot simulator. I typically get 5-10 minutes out of a single credit when playing pinball or video arcade, sometimes longer.

I also don't play ticket redemption machines as those are basically a scam just like gaming devices.

Re: Video: These Five Mario Games Were Never Really Mario Games

StarDust4Ever

I practiced on Mario Teaches typing back in the day. One grating issue with the game was if you missed one keystroke while hammering out a sentence, it penalized you with misses for each and every additional stroke until you hit the target letter.

Mario Picross is okay but I adored Picross 3D for the DS and actually imported the Japanese version of the game.

Yoshi's Island, Tetris Attack, and SMB2 are all well known games. Nobody refers to Yoshi's Island as SMW2 and since other Yoshi games already had a cult following, I think it could have stood well as just Yoshi's Island.

A few more to include in the vein of Tetris Attack might be Yoshi, Yoshi's Cookie, and Wario's Woods, all great puzzlers with Marioverse characters thrown in.

I wish we could get Tetris Attack on Virtual Console, but have to settle for eShop ports of Panel de Pon due to issues with Tetris licensing. It would be worth Nintendo's while to hack this game to remove all references to Tetris branding while leaving in the Mario chars.

For better or worse, Tetris Attack / Panel De Pon is the precursor to modern match-3 tile games such as Bejeweled or Candy Crush...

Pachinko parlours have ways of skirting around gambling laws. You cash in for a bunch of marbles, play Pachinko for more marbles, then you exchange the marbles for prizes which can be sold for cash at a nearby location.

It would be like modern arcades in the US with ticket redemption machines. There's no law stating you can't resell your "prizes" for money, except that the prizes they give away are worthless dollar store quality material that aren't worth anything.

cash -> tokens -> tickets -> prizes -> cash

In Japan, many prizes are fairly unique and of higher quality, some created with the explicit purpose of resale to vendors outside the parlour for cash. I'm not suggesting that kid friendly arcades in Japan practice these tactics, but adult-oriented parlours and arcades definitely do.

Even casino gaming in the US use ie chips or vouchers in exchange for currency.

@Rockman And the Everdrive N64 v3 can load Conker's BFD (a 64Mbyte game!) off my 32Gbyte Class 10 card in 3 seconds!

@MK_II Such a pity really. Even the Jaguar has a dedicated homebrew community, and it also used a similar CPU to the N64 MIPS.

I just feel like so much could be accomplished with homebrew apps on the N64. Even 2D sprite engines without a hint of 3D would be amazing on this powerhouse of a console.

Re: Random: Turns Out Mario Kart Might Make You A Better Driver In Real Life

StarDust4Ever

Best not to powerslide around turns if you drive a car. I have to remind myself to slow down for turns. Likatu will NOT come to your aid and pull you out of a ditch. Also, too much Mario Kart where you simply mash the gas the entire time, tends to give you a lead foot. That's what I love about MK8 200cc "Ludicrus Speed". You gotta slow down to stay on the road...

I had a V6 Mustang convertible once. Man that was a nice car. I swear I could do "rocket starts" from stop lights just like in Mario Kart. Unfortunately I totalled it after three months. Then I got a Dodge Caliber and six years, 140,000 miles later I'm still driving that POS around as my daily beater. AC don't work either...

Re: Review: Rubik's Cube (Wii U eShop)

StarDust4Ever

Does this game allow for 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 solving? Rubick's World for Wii did...

Based on my experience solving a virtual 5x5x5 Rubick's Cube with a Wiimote in Rubick's World, it is a bit tedious and I much prefer the physical versions. I used to collect twistypuzzles and had the whole range of cubes from 2x2x2 up to order seven, as well as other puzzles with more exotic geometries. Vcubes manufactures the 6x6x6 and 7x7x7.

I also formulated my own method for solving cubes which does not rely on sophisticated algorithms. It is slower but due to a learning disability, I found it impossible to memorize the dozens of algorithms necessary. Of the various methods for solving the top layer, those that require memorizing the most sequences are the fastest. My method uses only two short four move sequences in various combinations, and takes considerably longer to solve, but no messy algorithms, and I can apply this universal method to Megaminx (dodecahedron) and other geometries.

Re: Review: Bonk's Adventure (Wii U eShop / TG-16)

StarDust4Ever

@faint Konami did not release Bonk's Adventure. They only bought out Hudson decades later. Not that it's really a bad thing. I was saddened by the fact that Konami dropped out of the console race shortly after the acquisition because this essentially meant no new games from either company, but at least Konami, like Hudson before them, seem very willing to license the old IP. And yes, Hudson and Konami both made great games bitd, but IMO it just feels wrong seeing Konami's name associated with Bonk.

Could have gone down a lot worse. Microsoft could have bought them out like they did RARE and then refused to license any IP (besides Donkey Kong which Nintendo retained full rights to) to Nintendo.

Re: Review: Bonk's Adventure (Wii U eShop / TG-16)

StarDust4Ever

@OorWullie It's all good. I just played through the first couple stages. The VC menu for TG-16 looks a bit odd. It's like they copied the orange / dark gray color scheme of the original Turbografx, but it doesn't work well for choice of menu interface. And they did appear to add some extra features. Overall I am satisfied with Wii-U VC, but isn't TG-16 three years too late? Japan had PC Engine and Megadrive since 2013.

As far as emu quality, SNES and GBA are pixel perfect. So appears to be TG-16. NES really needs to loose the blur-o-vision filter, and N64 is generally too dark, but otherwise plays great.

Also X and Y are Turbo, just like with Wii VC.
