The Nintendo Switch reveal video brought with it a lot of excitement, though it was rather light on the details. Granted, after months of absolute silence from Nintendo, just a look at the console was enough for most fans. Of course, many were probably a bit miffed when it was said that no more Switch details would be divulged for 2016, but it looks like we won't have to wait very far into 2017 to hear more about it.
During Nintendo's Financial Briefings today, Tatsumi Kimishima announced that a Nintendo Switch Presentation will be globally livestreamed from Japan on 12th January, U.S. time. Among the things discussed here, we'll receive the release date of the console, pricing, and a look at the lineup of games in development. At later dates after the presentation, Nintendo will then be putting on Switch demo and sampling events in the U.S. and Europe so that the public can get some hands-on time with the new hybrid console.
What do you think? How much is this thing going to cost? What games will be there at launch? Drop us a comment in the section below.
Can't wait to see more of this thing!
I would probably figure it'll be about 299 range. I'm less curious about the system, as that looks solid, I'm more curious about launch line up and if digital games will be backwards compatible.
Didn't expect there to be a date two and a half months prior to this thing. But now I can stop wondering and put my Switch hype on the back-burner until then. Thanks Nintendo for sharing this information earlier than usual.
BREAKING!!! nintendo intend to release 4 mobile games before the end of march. additionally, they are also working on an android version of mario run. all according to bloomberg. they do not cite a source.
Sounds like they're switching into the new year with a bang!
I can't wait for 12 January 2017.
Hopefully some good news from Switch.
Dear, Mr.Tatsumi Kimishima. Please do your best effort to save Nintendo from a Big Crisis. For Satoru Iwata, please bless Nintendo Switch from Heaven with a Good Fortune...
January can't come soon enough. 2017 is the Year of NS (NES).
How nice of them to announce it so early. Maybe they felt bad about the sheer anguish we faced in the drought leading to the Switch reveal, so they made a date for us. xD
Also, let's point out that it's labeled as a presentation and not a direct. With the media and analysts being invited it seems like it's going to be a stage presentation!
Waiting for some backwards compatibility news
@SildanXr Well, prepare to be disappointed. No physical backwards compatibility doesn't make it look good.
And the waiting game begins
wonder what time it'll be. i'll be working the night shift that week so hopefully it's around the middle of the day like between noon and 6pm :3
@MitchVogel digital is possible, or at least an upgrade path. get the switch version/upgrade for free/discount if you have the digital version.
Yes! Nintendo finally gave a specific date for their presentation! This is what they need to to to build consumer trust! 👏
Oh boi, January can't come any faster!
@rjejr A Date!
So far away yet strangely satisfying.
I honestly wonder if the Eurogamer leak actually delayed the video reveal. I mean... I wouldn't reveal it directly after all the beans were spilled like that. Better to let people bury it with other rumors and ideas and begin to wonder what it really is. Still, with the timing before the financials and the full reveal probably never planned to come before January, the date was likely close to that day anyway.
To quote the plumber boy himself: "Here-a we goooo!"
Wow, all the consoles including Wii U burnt into ashes. Switch = PhoeniX of Nintendo ? XD
Wow. A lot earlier than expected! I can't wait! Even if there's no backwards compatibility which would suck let's face it most of us who do have jobs that don't allow you to game on company time have not even gotten fully through our 3ds backlog if we have been buying most the games that may have been physically or digitally released. Havin said that I will definitely get the Nintendo switch. I really don't wanna miss out on BOTW or any other switch game for that matter. Idk call me naive but I just have good feeling abt this system. Its the best of both worlds.
I'm predicting the price will be $300 bundled with a game that Nintendo possibly hasn't revealed yet. Some of the games on launch day could be a new Mario game, enhanced ports of Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon, Pikmin 4, and of course Breath of the Wild.
It's 11:30 pm here. And I am Excited!
So we have a date to get another date. Come March we all will be playing BotW and getting are hands on the Switch. I guess we will here the Specs and stuff in January 12th. So We have 2 and half months of speculations.
Will either be cheap and underpowered or quite pricey. Nintendo don't want to sell at a loss. Those are the two options, plain and simple. Don't forsee any games being bundled either.
Looks like Nintendo is going to do a press conference again. YES! I'm pretty much hyped
$300 bucks without games. $400 with 2 games or 1 game & Pro controller. That is my guess.
Cool, January. Just in time for everyone to realize how broke they all are from the holidays. Nintendo so smart!
$299.00, 5 first party games at launch. New Mario 3D World title, MARIO KART 8 DX, SPLATOON, POKEMON, & ZELDA. METROID, SMASH DX, MARIO MAKER DX, and F-ZERO by Christmas.
..wait..I thought it was already out at Walgreens?...
..oh no, I think I'm a victim of Bait-and-Switch ...
Welp, only 6652649 seconds to go until the reveal date
Wake me up in 10 weeks, I'm going into hibernation!
I don't know what I'm more excited about at the moment: The fact that Nintendo gave more than 24 hours' notice about a presentation, or that I'm now beyond hyped about Sun/Moon after digging into the demo this evening!
Good night. Zzz...
Well we didn't have to wait very long for that announcement! Praise the Nintendo overlords!
@WhiteTrashGuy I'm with you on a Metroid title.
Watch them announce it and everyone run out and get Federation Force because the story will tie in. Hey I'll be guilty of it.
Wow, Didn't expect to play out the full NX impressions this early in the new year! I'm just worried abouy the OTHER 2 months to follow at launch. I can't wait!
I wonder what thought process was behind selecting that date. Maybe they figured 2-3 weeks after Christmas the initial new from consumers recently received electronic devices would be worn off of many people's minds as many gamers begin to recover some of their sanity. I wonder if there is a set price or if they are waiting for results from the holidays to set the price.
The wait is SO much better now that we know where the end goal is. The 12th of January can't come soon enough, but knowing that that is when it is coming is something really to look forward to.
Now I just need to get my hype-erdrive working again...
@aaronsullivan A seriously messed up date.
First they tell us "NX" 2 tears before launch.
Then they tell us the launch date before we even know what it is.
Then they show us it's a tablet, but won't tell us if it's a touchscreen or not.
Now they tell us they are shutting up for over 2 1/2 months.
And they will only talk about the new games 2 months before they release.
I can't remember the last time I bought a $60 console game with less than 5 months notice, much less 2. Who does that? That's hardly enough time to even set up pre-orders. 2 months between middle January to middle March for people to digest all the info about the console and the games and decide what they want to buy. That's too much info and not enough time.
Yet everyone here seems so excited for the news. I'm guessing it's all the people who already know they'll buy it day 1 along with a bunch of games sight unseen.
Where's Ken Bone? Can somebody slap a Switch Logo on his sweater?
I'm really hoping for some sort of Metroid and/or F-Zero tease; anything at all! I'm already looking forward to the next 3D Sonic and Mario titles, so Metroid and/or F-Zero would completely fill out my "hype train ticket."
Literally the day I come back from school break. My luck is just fantastic.
@rjejr to be fair, there's not a console I haven't bought sight unseen.
@rjejr also, we've known about Nintendo's system for so long, there's no excuse for anyone to not have saved up any coin (only half joking) I already have my piggy bank fund for both the switch and Scorpio
If Switch releases with Zelda that's it. Nintendo wins everything.
I'll be there for you, little Switch.
I completely understand no backwards compatibility as this is an entirely different device, but if they end up releasing that slightly updated version of Mario Kart 8 and not compensate buyers of the original... that will definitely impact my decision to buy the Switch at launch.
Any tech-savvie posters able to hazard a guess as to how much memory they could probably cram into something that size? I'm hoping there is not too much game juggling with the housing unit and I can't imagine they'd go backwards on downloading software by moving more towards physical.
@WhiteTrashGuy The new Mario they showed doesn't look like 3D world really, the camera angles much more like 64 and Sunshine, and you can triple jump! (You couldn't do that in 3D world)
Can't wait to see the games and hopefully by then, I'd be able to get a preorder
@MitchVogel To be fair, 3DS will be cheap as buttons by then (like 2DS already is) and Wii U flopped massively, so I don't think physical BC is going to be the main selling point.
Peculiar timing to announce this, when Europe is fast asleep and it's nighttime in the States.
Not the 1st January but close enough!
If its £349.99 i want it to at least be on par with Xbox one and ps4 graphically, if it's not on par with them £249.99 - £299.99 range will be a better price. I'd love battery life to be at least 6 hours on the highest settings and maybe 8-10 with settings turned off. But it will most likely be 3 hours - 4 at a push. 12th January can't come soon enough
For an unknown reason Nintendo obviously seem to like this time for directs, not sure what the reasoning is. I would have thought people were feeling strapped for cash after Christmas, but I suppose you don't need the money then.
I like directs around my birthday, so suits me.
That's the day before my birthday!!
Good news indeed, and it should shut a few whiners up for a while at least.
@rjejr I'm brutal at editing.
Roll on January, its already top of my list to buy
I'm hoping the price for the Switch is somewhere between $499-$949. I want this thing to be good and I'm willing to pay for it. The new iphone costs $850 and nobody bats an eye, PSRV costs $500, PS4 $400. I don't see any reason why Nintendo consoles can't also sell for these prices if it's worth it.
I would like to see Luigi's Mansion 3 !
No more news my ass! Nintendo is acting like such a flirt right now!
Nice Switch logo on Red fat guy.
Woke up here in Europe to this wonderful news. A big LIVE streamed presentation from Tokyo sounds exciting, followed by public showings in the US and Europe.
Will this event be somewhat like the Wii U event held in September 2012? That was also 2 months before the launch.
I wish I had your money.
All together now: "Ha ha, ha ha, yeah"! I want that White Denim song to become the official Nintendo hype theme.
Iwata looking over from the heavens and the Wii U burning in the corner are a classy touch.
I'm not concerned about the cost. It should cost more than the Xbox and PS, as they are not longer 'new just released' consoles.
That is assuming the Switch is up to the same standard as the competition.
Of course if the Switch is just another Wii u with the hand held bit having a wider range of play and under par graphics, then Nintendo better price it as low as they can and hope gamers buy it as a second console. Time will tell.
Announce Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Bravely Default 3, Dragon Quest XI and hopefully Square Enix brings Final Fantasy XV at launch!
It's nice that Nintendo is becoming even better than before with these announcements. Hopefully they keep doing this until the Switch release.
And World of Final Fantasy.
@Anti-Matter Itsaaa Square Fest!
What if we got FF 7 Remake with special extra Cloud amiibo content, just to show some extra love for Nintendo.
Nice. Can't wait for more details.
Mark your calendars people! It shall be a glorious day!
ha ha ha ha, yeAH!
Nice, but Nintendo had to do this. They said that the fans wouldn't get any more information until 2017, and that the pricing would be revealed before the launch date, so they had to reveal it in January or February.
This is still a little later than it should be, but as long as they reveal everything we need to know, then it should be okay - as long as the Switch gets the essentials right like the software line-up, battery life and pricing.
@G-Boy Indeed. But it has been such a long time ago since Nintendo held an actual live press conference/presentation/event, at least that's what I understood from the press release. I'm getting that E3 feeling from back in the days, yaaay
Finally! The info I actually need to know in order to make an informed decision about a possible purchase has been given a reveal date. Shame it is so far away but they have already confirmed that they weren't planning on revealing more until 2017 so considering that this is a lot earlier than I thought it would be.
Date makes some sense as they probably would like to squeeze some extra Wii U & 3DS sales over Christmas; although just revealing the console may have already impacted that.
Then again I remember when they unveiled the GBA SP in January and there was some backlash from the receivers of standard GBA's over Christmas. Not that it seemed to have a negative impact on Sales.
Hmm, only 2 clouds in the comments today. An improvement!
January?!!!! I was expecting someting this year!
I hope the NES Mini will persuade the older generation to get interested in Nintendo again and buy the Switch.
And what time. All aboard the hype train.
Time to start to dream about the line up! I just want Metroid, FFVI, Fire Emblem, F-Zero, Mario, Zelda, DK, New Smash, Red Dead, Skyrim, Witcher IV, Persona, SMTV, Bravely Third, Pokémon, Rogue Squadron IV!
And I'll buy, for sure, but probably on July only.
All ready been confirmed by Nintendo, there will be NO backward compatibility with wii/u or 3ds, such a shame...
MAX HYPE !!!
Ah well I can concentrate on playing AAA games on my X box S until then. Maybe get some tomb raider in.
The Switch's price in the UK will depend on how much lower £sterling falls against the Yen by the launch date. The more it falls, the higher the price.
Everybody aboard the HYPE TRAIN!!!!
@Warioware Just keep in mind how small USB sticks have become. And that's a device with a plastic housing, so strip that off and the flash module inside is even smaller, varying in size from Micro SD to a strip of 3cm/1.4inch which will at most be 3-5mm thick, so it's relatively easy to add some to either the handheld or the dock, because they hardly take up any space.
And there will probably be an SD card slot as well, which I believe I already saw in the tablet controller, so that will more than likely support any size card, which means the only limit will be how much you're willing to spend on it. Current sizes of SD cards are already going up to 1TB, but those are still quite expensive...
The dock might also have its own SD card slot, but if not, then it still has the USB ports so you can either add a USB stick or a portable HDD.
Hope that answers your questions...
Surprisingly not too long to wait, seems like we will get a March release.
Well, nice to know! Shame we still have to wait two months (and a little more), but Christmas season is always so short....
More important, a presentation?! I do hope they make something more in line with Spaceworld and old E3 conferencces and not the disaster of presentation that was the Wii U - every reporter looked so bored there!
Kind of surprised they've announced it so far in advance but I guess it stops people moaning they don't know when they'll find out more. And then around only 2 months from that presentation it'll be released! I hope they have a demo tour like they did in the DS/Wii days.
You'd think they'd do this during the holiday period to get consumers ready and kids excited. 2 months before it's release (unless they're holding it back) is kind of late for some people and won't give many people the time to see if they want or not want it. I kind of understand, as they don't want to hurt 3DS sales, but why so long of a wait for any information?
@MitchVogel I feel like there is a version of that gif with Reggie's head shopped in... Either way color me excited!
I have noticed that people are posting that they are happy to pay £249.99 and above for the switch. I paid £249.99 for the Xbox S bundled with Battle 1. If the switch is not packing something that is worth paying above the 250 - 300, I m sure people will shy away until the price falls.
Really interested in seeing what the lineup look like. But the switch is looking like a day1 buy for me.
@MortyKoopa Nintendo's past policy has been that they don't need to compete with the graphic's as their systems are different enough to sell themselves.
There is a very fine line between innovation and gimmick.
The Wii seem to lean towards innovation but the Wii u was a gimmick.
Without decent graphics and some games the Switch tablet won't save it.
@MortyKoopa you have me with 'flop talk'.
I do expect an Nintendo home console to rivel the PlayStation and Xbox. The Switch tablet is a gimmick.
If you are saying that Nintendo are selling us a tablet that can be played through a tv then it will have the same success as the Wii U.
I would hope that the Switch unit will have its own power to rivel the PS.
Looking forward to it!
@Clownshoes Well, I understand that. At least we're getting Dragon Quest XI. I hope they do something special with FF 7 Remake and the Cloud amiibo though.
@sony_ponies I love the direct detail about Iwata directing The hype train from heaven... May the universe bless that man's afterlife with peace and joy.
@MortyKoopa I get where you are going with the 'toy' analogy, but........
a tv screen connected to a box (console) and a controller is a games system. Most stuff added after that is a gimmick.
Are you familiar with the new Moto Z smartphone? The lightest and thinnest smartphone. Modules can be added to the phone, camera, battery, speakers etc.
I have the phone because it is light and thin, but to me the modules 'are' a gimmick and not as Motorola want them to be, the future of the smartphone.
That's how I see the Switch tablet. If the main idea of a Nintendo console is compromised then the tablet is the gimmick.
As a long term Nintendo gamer, I like to sit at a large HD screen and play Nintendo and third party games. And I would hope I can play them with graphics equal or better than the PS and Xbox. I don't agree that graphics are not important to Nintendo gaming and that having waited to years for the new eye popping Zelda game I am happy to sacrifice graphics for playing it on a small screen with average graphics and limited battery at an airport.
@sfx-si maybe digital . But yeah, I don't see how they could replicate the second screen if it has to be on the dock to be used on the TV.
Can't wait .
Call me crazy but I'm hoping this thing will be $200. Nintendo has made a lot of comments in the past year or two about pricing their next system so that anyone and everyone will buy it.
I think $200 would be that sweet spot where it will sell like crazy.
@Clownshoes Heh, yes. An announcement before the Xbox1.5 and Ps4.5 launch would totally be a make or break session for the Switch. Never you mind the Switch getting support years from now and if the Third party developers don't mind porting games on the Switch regardless of Sales, if the porting job could be more seamless than the WiiU or the Nintendo games, with Breath of the Wild at launch, Or as Kimishima says, People getting their tax returns at March. The Switch is DOOMED!
Second thursday of the new year, definitely a good time to reveal everything we don't know about the console, and also a good time to say "demo kiosks are in store starting monday!".
I expect the console to cost $300-400, to probably release somewhere in the last two weeks of March (after March 20th), and to only have one Nintendo game released at launch (maybe two) so people will support third party games.
Games I would like to see are Zelda, Skyrim, Watch Dogs 2, Street Fighter V, Injustice 2, Dark Souls 3, Batman Arkham Knight GOTY Edition, Fallout 4, and maybe the 3D Mario game. I think Nintendo will only release Zelda or maybe Zelda and another game at launch so not to over shadow the third party games, because Nintendo fans seem to absolutely forget to look at the third party games when they see a Nintendo game, and that tends to make third party hate supporting Nintendo consoles
Thanks for that, I didn't realise SD cards had hit 1TB. Hope they don't use proprietary cards like Sony.
@MortyKoopa Nintendo was shaking up the market with the Wii u, but the market did not want to be shook up.
The way we interact with media, is not so much changing more developing.
To sit and play games on a big screen can't be done on a small screen without sacrificing what the big screen offers.
The smartphone has got gamers attention and maybe candy crush or Pokémon go offer enough gaming satisfaction for many, but it's not an either or.
Maybe there is an argument for having only two home consoles to choose from, and Nintendo stick to handheld if it does not want to produce the box and controller and let it's games do the rest.
If the Switch has a customized Tegra X2 in it, it will be able to compete with the PS4, especially when docked. Laura Kate Dale already reported that she has sources saying the Dock will provide extra processing power. You brought up heat and power supply and the dock could provide solutions for both of those problems. Nintendo said they will be covering specs at the presentation so we shall see then.
At least now we have a date for more info. Nice, looking forward to hearing more - it sounds like they have a lot up their sleeve.
Remember folks, anything you here between now and then, if it's not from Nintendo it's pure conjecture.
@MortyKoopa Around here they like to throw the "G" word around as a negative against Nintendo. If the other two do it, it gets ignored. These people will never be happy. It really must be physically and mentally draining to be negative like that all the time.
@MortyKoopa "But like I said, I don't care about this power thing myself. I love Nintendo's approach and I love the Switch."
With you on that. Power does NOT make a game good, it just makes it prettier. Looks wear off after a while whereas good gameplay doesn't.
People who obsess about power around here have their priorities wrong, and shouldn't waste their time with Nintendo products as that's not really the route they take. I suggest getting a PC if you want graphics that will knock your socks off.
@Warioware You're welcome. Prices are still ridiculous, though. But they are slowly dropping, so who knows what they'll cost in a few years. As for the format: it will be normal SD cards or Micro SD cards, nothing like Sony's proprietary memory stick or something like that. The Wii, Wii U, DSi and 3DS also use normal SD cards, so no reason for Nintendo to go and change that now.
and 2 and a half months to wait !
Best birthday present ever what a day for a further reveal
BS. The Wii couldn't accept N64 cartridges, yet you could download the system's games and play them through the Wii on the spot. No physical compatibility does not rule out no digital compatibility.
@BensonUii Yes please!
Eh, not really. Those games had to be developed and sold as virtual console. There weren't N64 games that just worked out of the box because they were magically compatible where they just dropped them on the storefront (don't mean that in a rude way, just sayin).
Those older games will likely be sold on Switch down the line, as VC, for a price. There may or may not be a discount program for those who already purchased the games on Wii U.
If Nintendo is smart, they'll make a discount program.
Eh, yes really. This has nothing to do with storefronts in 1996, and the Wii games for sale on the Wii U had to be developed for VC as well. This has to do with being able to play older system's games on newer hardware that does not physically accept the older system's software medium at all costs.
Well, there were GC games that dropped in 2001, and THEY were magically compatible with the Wii's first hardware version. Had Nintendo made the GameCube right, it would have been magically compatible with N64 games that dropped in '96, too.
Of course they will be sold on Switch. They always are. It's been part of Nintendo's strategy for a long time.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Thanks for the Ken Bone edit. I'm trying to figure out how to dress up as a Switch for Halloween but maybe I'll just be a Switch-Bone instead.
@Sir_JBizzle "to be fair, there's not a console I haven't bought sight unseen."
You and JaxonH, who I adoringly refer to as "Daddy Warbucks", would get along great.
Other than that I can't recall anything I commented on 2 days ago, but I'm sick of all of the new rumours more than I was of the old rumours. At least the old rumours were b/c Nintendo was up on it's mountaintop and we were just making stuff up, though all of the rumours did turn out to be true, now Nintendo came down from the mountain said, "I bring you the 10 Commandments, here are 1, 2 and 3, I'll be back in 2 1/2 months to give you the other 7." Gee, thanks for nothing. I'll be back holiday 2017 to decide if I want 1 or not.
Now where's my Zelda U I've been waiting for since E3 2015, back when you said you were only showing games that would be ready in the next 6 months.
Reggie Fils-Aime: It goes back to the statement i made earlier about how we view E3. We just fundamentally don't believe in showing content at E3 that is going to be a long term proposition. We like to show content that typically will launch in the upcoming Holiday and maybe extending into the first half of the following year. And at this point, the new Zelda for Wii U is not a 2015 project.
I don't wanna wait that long for the full monty reveal. I hope Nintendo continues to drip-feed us info until then. Otherwise the rumor mills will...
