The Wii U eShop has really punched above its weight during its short lifespan with many excellent Nindie games (and a few terrible ones) being made available for lucky gamers to download.
Some of our favourites are Shin'en Multimedia's FAST Racing NEO and Image & Form's SteamWorld Dig and SteamWorld Heist. We've always felt these games had such amazing production values that they could have been disc-based retail games from day one, and obviously someone at Nintendo has had the same idea as they will now be published as the inaugural 'Nintendo eShop Selects' titles for Wii U.
The retail version of FAST Racing NEO offers even more tracks to enjoy with the Nintendo eShop Selects version of this release, as the eight downloadable courses contained in the upcoming NEO Future Pack will be included on the disc.
SteamWorld Dig and SteamWorld Heist will be available in the same retail package which is lovingly entitled the SteamWorld Collection. SteamWorld Collection will also include the SteamWorld Heist add-on content The Outsider, providing a new ally with a past shrouded in mystery, as well as new missions with brand new weapons, gear, and snazzy new headwear.
Watch out for both of these games coming to retail on 30th September in Europe (US release is TBC). Do you plan to pick these disc based collectables up? Which other eShop games would you like to see arrive on retail in the future? Let us know by posting a comment.

We asked, we got...well, I did at least
Wait, there's DLC coming to FAST Racing NEO? YES!!!
This is awesome. Since Nintendo won't give us a new F-Zero, a retail version of Fast Racing Neo would make up for that.
I guess they gotta use up their disc supply and retail space on something since there's no major 1st or 3rd party support really anymore
Anyone else kind of wished they had published it without the Nintendo Selects brand?
EDIT: Don't get me wrong this is fantastic news! But I can't help but be distracted by the orange border
I've already got the digital version of FRN and I'm not interested in SteamWorld, so I'll give these a miss.
Well I already have FAST downloaded, but I might get the Steamworld collection later down the line.
Hell yeah ! Day one for both!
Do many people want these ? The Shovel Knight one had the addition of a cool manual and was a bit of a cult classic across all platforms. Are these games really that popular that people want them on disc with no extra frills thrown in. Maybe they will become collectors items down the line as I cant see them being sold in huge quantitites.
YES Please! Love it. Thank you nintendo.
I don't tend to download stuff to my Wii U because of the limited memory of the system. These physical releases get around that, so providing they're at the right price point, I might pick these up.
Depending on price, I may double-dip on the Steamworld games.
Definitely double dipping for these. I had an objection to the Nintendo Selects when I could get the original disc copies, but seeing as this is their debut on disc, it's a day one for me
That's interesting, but will they sell? I would totally have bought the disc version of FRN if it had been out around the same time as the download, but 8 months later?
@Moon You could also get an external hard drive. They're not expensive at all these days.
Here's hoping for a Shantae 2-pack, with Risky's Revenge Director's Cut and Pirate's Curse.
@KoopaTheGamer I could yeah, but it's a bit awkward. There's not really enough room around my tele as it is, and last thing I need is a hard drive leeching on my Wii U.
Day one purchase for FAST for me. Been sitting on the fence for ages, but a disc copy makes it a buy.
I will buy Fast Racing Neo a second time on disc.
"NEO Future Pack" is probably paid DLC, so another reason to buy the disc instead of the DLC.
Bought FRN a few months ago when was on sale and loved it. Will be double dipping in compliance with my "Physical Back-up directive" for downloadable games I love.
As for Steamworld, depends on price as I've never played it.
I've never liked the Nintendo Selects covers. They ruin the look of a game. Bring them out on disc yes but why have the Nintendo Select slapped on them? It's not like this is differentiating them from a previous retail release. And aren't they likely to be more expensive than the eShop version? I've some of the smaller eShop games that also went to print like The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 and Teslagrad. I don't think I'd have bought them if their covers had been fuglied up like this.
There were a lot of people who firmly wouldn't buy digital at all, so this goes out to them. A start, and possibly just a way to expand on shelf space, but a start nonetheless.
I'm not interested in either of those titles, but I hope more get announced, it's a great idea.
Double-dipping on FRN too due to the DLC, and I'll probably get the SteamWorld pack despite beating SteamWorld Dig ages ago. These are fantastic news, I hope we see more of these.
"The eight downloadable courses contained in the upcoming NEO Future Pack "
Superb,I had no idea there was more courses coming. Was this even reported here?
Will definately go for the physical copy of the Steamworld titles.
A few months ago, I waited for a retail edition of FAST but it seemed like it would never come, so I bit the bullet and bought digital. I don´t like digital, not really.
I had no idea that there was DLC coming, I might even be crazy enough to buy the same game twice if this retail release is reasonably priced.
I shall double dip for FRN.
Give the label eShop selects, wouldn't this open ideas for the 3DS as well?
So a few bits of news - FAST is getting DLC and Steamworld Heist will be out at the end of September if not before! Good news.
It only makes sense that what can be considered the new F-Zero by all means has gotten a physical release.
Brawl In The Family's Matthew "Tadpole Treble" Taranto put it best:
"It started innocently enough–Koopa Cape was a funky and dynamic course that had shades of F-Zero in its DNA. But as Mario Kart tracks got grander and crazier, it was inevitable that everything would lead to this…full F-Zerofication! I was a relative latecomer to the F-Zero franchise (got into it around F-Zero X for the N64), but I still think its blisteringly fast arcadey nature has a place in Nintendo’s lineup. So I’m a bit wary with how Mario Kart 8 seems to be a blend of the two major racing series, apparently leaving our dear Captain Falcon in the dust! The game looks fun for sure, but it’s been ten years since the last console F-Zero game, so I hope Falcon and crew return for another lap around the galaxy at some point in the future. Or maybe I’m just being overly dramatic about the similarities. But they at least warranted their own comic!"
And then came the 200cc class, effectively turning Mario Kart into F-Zero.
So yeah, Fast Racing NEO is, by all means, the real F-Zero for the Wii U.
I can't believe this. I always wanted "Darksiders" on Wii U and have FAST League Racing on a box... both came true on the same week!
Awesome they are doing this. I backed Pirate's Curse on Kickstarter for the download but I plan on getting the sealed retail game for the shelf.
Glad they are preserving these games on disc for prosperity. Shame that eShop will be gone someday and physical media will be the only way people have acdess to these games.
This is a great idea since lots of people hesitate buying digital. These games will sell very well at retail. Just not to me. I bought these day 2 kind of thing and even though I love them, things like this and shovel knight, duck tales, etc... going retail makes me upset that I wasted money on digital when I could have got the disc. So now I don't buy digital anymore until it's super discounted or on disc. Sorry devs, you made me do this.
Wait a second, when was FAST Racing Neo DLC announced?
Damn it. I just bought Fast Racing Neo two weeks ago. I always buy physical when I can, so I guess I'll have to buy it on disc too. Because I'm a sucker. Same thing happened with Shovel Knight too.
I'd pick up a NES remix bundle for sure. Hopefully a sign of things to come.
If only I had know this before,I would've waited for the physical version.I don't like double-dipping,so I'll just buy the DLC.
@Donutman I'm with you. I vow never to buy digital again unless it's under £5.
I bought FRN day one but didn't rate it on initial play, so I've probably clocked less than one hour on it. Unless something changes or I find it very cheap, I shan't be adding the disc to my collection.
Heist might be different - it's not out yet on Wii U, is it? I have Dig but hardly played it.
Wait steamworld heist isn't even out on the wii u ehop, when is it supposed to by the way, does anyoe know ?
Filling those Fall release gaps Nintendo? I see what you're doing... Not complaining here
@munstahunta SteamWorld Heist is released 30th september in Europe according to Nintendo's PR.
I suppose this is good given the amount of physical releases coming in the next months ^_^ FAST Racing NEO is particularly a good one.
I haven't picked up Fast Racing Neo yet, so I will on disc. Always prefer retail when the option is there. Looks like I"ll get this and the Azure Gunvot series on disc this fall so far.
Speaking of Nintendo Selects titles for Wii U in Europe... since this is the last Holiday season of the Wii U, Nintendo should add a lot more titles to the line up along with a discount on the Wii U itself to 200 euros.
My line up for Europe would be:
Super Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
Mario Kart 8
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush
Mario Party 10
Splatoon
Yoshi's Woolly World
Awesome I'll definitely pick these up even tho I've already got them that's the prob when the retail versions comes out some much later I know it takes time tho.
Indie games I would going retail is - Affordable Space Adventures
Rive (new coming out).
Curve digital games.
Renegade Kids games.
AWESOME!! These games especially deserve the boxed treatment!
fast racing neo is an outright triple-a title. if it has extra features for the retail version, i'll buy it again.
@Grandpa_Pixel I'd prefer them without the Nintendo Selects branding myself.
Anyone else smell a Yooka Laylee physical release on the horizon?
Brilliant! I only own Heist for 3DS (which is fantastic, btw) out of these. Day 1 for both of these. Thanks Nintendo!
I'm actually big fan of these "eShop Selects" because there's a bunch of games on the eShop I really wish I had physical copies of! It's cool to see Nintendo doing this instead of making all of their games digital!
This is utterly fantastic! A fantastic move for download exclusives!
I'm buying STEAMWORLD collection!!!
This seems cool. I already own Dig and NEO, so I will have to pass on this, unfortunately.
Perfect! I haven't got fast racing neo so I'll get it physical then, depending on the pricing. However, I'm not getting the steamworld collection because I already have dig.
Awesome! Just need an NA date now!! But have been wanting Neo on disc, my calls have been answered!! We know why this is happening of course, as well as Shantae and Runbow, Nintendo needs to fill out retail, and other than Paper Mario there isn't much on the horizon.
@jimi If there isn't I will riot
@Grandpa_Pixel I feel the same! The border in the select series is very distracting...in a bad way...the seal would suffice!
@jimi Hm, I didn't really think it was. But I'm really hopeful, that's for sure. Game is looking fantastic.
I hope this gets released in NA too. I haven't bought Fast Racing Neo yet and I'll hold out a bit longer in case.
Awesome, paying to much for downloads...because they are on discs. If its 5 Euro's more it may be acceptible...but 10 or even more?! We'll wait and see!
@Jamotello : "The retail version of FAST Racing NEO offers even more tracks to enjoy". I'm SOLD!!!!
Nothing but great news here. They will be released into a competition void as well. The border and branding will even make it stand out as something to pay attention to and related to the Nintendo selects which are the best sellers (usually); it's quite an honor for these eShop standouts. Did I see a comment calling the box art "distracting" as a bad thing? Tough crowd.
I may consider Fast Racing Neo if something similar happens in NA. My daughter loves a good racing game and we haven't bitten yet.
So Fast is getting eight new tracks... that's superb! My one complaint with the game was a shortage of tracks, but this gives the game a similar track count to F-Zero GX! Just wish it were coming sooner than September 30th...
As "Selects", these will be $19.99? If so, they are great deals... I own/play the Steamworld games on 3DS, but I might consider the FAST disc if it's $19.99 and includes original and DLC tracks on the actual disc.
Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams DX would be suitable, given that already got a retail release in NA. But hopefully the DX content would be patched into the eShop version, too.
I might pick up the retail version of FAST if it's confirmed in NA.
Not really a fan of the orange boarders. Still going to buy Fast Racing Neo!
Didn't realize that Heist is already on Wii U eshop!!
Please come to the US!!!!!!!
First NES Remix 1 and 2, then Teslagrad, Shovel Knight and now these. It's cool to have them in a physical edition but they are basically telling me NOT to buy popular downloadable games at launch because they'll eventually get released physically at some point.
Meh. What kind of strategies does this company utilizes, it's beyond me.
As a physical collector, I am thrilled for these and think it will be great for the developers as it will get them even more exposure. Would love to see even more of these, especially a Trine set (how about a trilogy set and include the 3rd game). That being said, hey NOA, WHERE IS OUR PHYSICAL RELEASE OF FATAL FRAME V?! How is it that they are doing this (which is great) but their one mainstream release that fans have been begging for a physical release doesn't get one when it is really needed (16GB is ridiculous for a download only retail title on Wii U). Sorry, just really frustrated over that one.
Not bad. Not bad at all.
If it's released in NA I'll pick up FAST Racing NEO. Somehow I don't think it will. I don't care if it says "NA TBA", I just automatically take the stance that it won't at this point.
I already have both Steamworlds (Dig twice, actually), so I won't get that, no matter how awesome it looks. But I've had my eye on Fast Racing Neo. So if the price is competitive, then that it would be cool to have a disc.
I was really excited about the Steamworld Collection until I saw that it was TBC for North America. We NEED these, NoA!
I'll be getting both of these. Maybe this means NES Remix will finally make it to the UK in disc form?
I put off buying both of these games and for once it paid off. I already have it, but I would love a physical version of Freedom Planet.
Always contemplated these games, but I prefer physical so will definitely get these now. In fact it's made me just go and buy Teslegrad for £14 on Amazon now! Already got Shovel Knight of course
Nice idea, good to see some eShop titles getting some extra exposure, especially as the Wii U winds down
Since I have 3% hard drive space left, I gotta grab FAST on disc. Was wondering if it was ever gonna get dlc too. Excellent
I mean, once this comes to America, sure.
@Grandpa_Pixel
the good news is the border won't show up whilst playing the game.
so whats the release date for America?
This is great! I've always wanted Fast Racing Neo, but space was a concern for me and I don't want a hard drive. Count me in!
@Moon You can get very small external hard drives. I actually built my own out of an old laptop HD I wasn't using, and it is basically invisible back there. Just sayin'.
Definitely interested if it comes stateside. But I'm curious to what the price would be, $20 - $30?
@-DEMISE- thanks for the tip dude. I will probably just maintain my obsession and attention on the 3DS in the mean time though, until the NX comes out... providing it's good enough!
Seems like too much hassle to be buying a HDD for my Wii U! I should have done it years ago, feel it's a bit too late now.
@Moon Yeah at this point I would say it's definitely late in the game to be buying an external drive for Wii U haha. I actually didn't have any plans to buy one, but then I replaced a laptop HD and ended up with a 500GB drive just sitting there, so I ordered a case and y-cable for like $7 and boom, external hard drive for practically nothing. And it works flawlessly.
@KoopaTheGamer Yeah, I was confused as well. I did some research and there is indeed a DLC pack coming soon! It is called the "Neo Future Pack" and it contains 8 new courses, 10 new vehicles and 18 new music tracks! Really frickin' sweet. Shinen is awesome!
Hopefully this retail release and new DLC will increase the number of online players. It is a fantastic racer and deserves a bigger fan community.
@LuigiMan123 It says right there in the article that the US release date is TBA.
@-DEMISE- in your circumstance I can totally understand why you bothered. Thankfully there's a pretty good library waiting on the Wii U eShop for you to make the most of it. Better take advantage before they pull the eShop entirely, I guess!
@Moon Yeah that's true. I wonder if there'll be any shared games between the Wii U eShop and whatever the NX will get, which I assume will be its own version of the eShop. There's just so many awesome games that are download-only on Wii U and it would be a shame to see them be basically forgotten when NX comes around.
I ALWAYS had an incling that Fast racing Neo would eventually make it to retail like Shovel Knight etc, as although I have never played it as I don't really do digital, I have heard, read and seen nothing but good things about it, so for me it will be a day one purchase. I am as excited about finally being able to play this as I have been for a lot of Nintendo IP releases
Really not a big fan of digital, but I really wanted to play Fast Racing Neo. Glad to see it getting a physical release. If these come out in NA, I will be buying them.
ive checked every online uk store for these and none showing as due in stock????????
anyone advise where we can pre order?
if anyone wants to pre order these i have found them on amazon.de (germans amazon)
nothing showing on the uk or france one as of yet..
@vio ok sorry didn't see it
