Re: Nintendo Switch Will Cost £279.99 In The UK

StarDust4Ever

Ha! I can remember a time when the Pound was on parity with $2 USD. I looked up conversion on Google. 299 USD = 245 pounds, so you guys aren't paying that much upcharge for tax and import fees. Remember kiddos, United States charges sales tax separate. My town is 9.6% so I'm basically paying $328 on my end, not counting a spare Pro controller and Zelda.

You guys try and import an American Switch and you'll be paying more after shipping + customs.

Re: Playtonic Games Adds Two More Former Rare Devs to its Ranks

StarDust4Ever

@SeriousSam @Luna_110 I honestly don't see why they couldn't keep their promise. I backed Shantae Half Genie Hero a while back for Wii-U and Way Forward ultimately delivered a game. Playtonic could have done likewise, but I'm holding out for a Switch announcement. We may end up with a better game. An N64 port would be the icing on the cake thoguh, even if the graphics were blocky!

Re: Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

StarDust4Ever

Anybody else enjoying this game with their KS codes yet? I don't see it available in the eShop, but code was successfully redeemed and playing it right now on Wii-U. I've finished the Mermaid stage and this game really wastes no time kicking you into the action....

PS:I'm gonna buy a physical copy to keep sealed...

Re: 8Bitdo Is Bringing A Wireless Controller Option To The NES Classic Mini

StarDust4Ever

What if we already have an 8bitdo NES controller and don't want/need another one??? I've already got an NES30, FC30, and SNES30. If I get another controller, I may go with the FC30 PRO. I love the gold trim on those...

@DarkKirby Yeah, I actually downgraded the firmware on my second 8bitdo NES reciever so that I could use A+B. Also they will need to preserve A+B specifically for use with the NES Mini if they expect X+Y to work properly with Wiimotes or in the event Nintendo releases an SNES Mini in the future.

Yes I'm aware that would be kind of pointless to use with a Wiimote as it would need two Bluetooth connections to transmit data (imagine if the Wiimote synced to the reciever piggybacked onto it in an infinite loop??? ), but I absolutely loathe using the Y+B combination for two button games even though many gamers swear by it. Nintendo used B+A on the DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii-U VC, and even the Game Boys and Dog Bones tilted this direction, so why not keep it this way?

Re: Hardware Review: Retro-Bit x 8Bitdo RB8-64 Bluetooth Controller

StarDust4Ever

@Shugo They are probably using the same molds that Hyperkin, Yobo, and others are doing with the N64 controllers. Since it's not an N64 compatible controller, the expansion slot is useless. Not including it however is a lack of forsight. For instance if they release a wireless 8-bitdo reciever to work with these controllers, use of rumble or memory paks with it would not be possible with the games that support them.

I may pass on this controller, and just get the FC30 PRO if they ever release an 8bitdo reciver for the N64. It's a lot easier to map N64 controls to a dual stick controller than to map a dual stick controls to an N64 controller. VC for instance uses the right analog for C-stik use.

Re: Random: A Glimpse of the Days When a Super Mario 64 Tease Tormented Luigi Fans

StarDust4Ever

A similar event happened with the release of Mario 64 DS. If you may recall, the developers put Yoshi in the original N64 game at the top of the castle as an Easter Egg. Someone commented that Peach appeared at the top of the castle in the DS version (she was just lounging up there the entire time). It gave me a goal to reach, and I finally earned all 150 stars only to find out it was all a lie. I did find a rabbit who held a key that unlocked the loosest slot in the entire game though.

Re: Video: Everything You Wanted To Know About The Super Game Boy, But Were Afraid To Ask

StarDust4Ever

@Prizm I've always referred to N-E-S/S-N-E-S as En-Ee-Ess, and Super-En-Ee-Es or Ess-En-Ee-Ess, and it always grinds my gears when people pronounce it phonetically, ie Ness, Sness or Snez...

And quite frankly I don't care if the lead character of Earthbound was "Ness"; that is a misnomer as Earthbound came out in Japan. Last I checked, the main character was not named "Fami"...

Re: Book Review: Super Mario Adventures

StarDust4Ever

I just ordered this yesterday. I remember downloading soe scans of the comic off the interwebs back in the early days, but they only had the first seven issues uploaded before it got canned. I also got the Zelda comics on recomendation by Amazon. I would love to someday see a crossover between the strikingly different Mario and Zelda 'verses. The Hyrule MarioKart track was a nice first step.

Re: Random: Here's a Theory on the Rather Short NES Mini Controller Cables

StarDust4Ever

@PlywoodStick Everything high speed digital interface will eventually fail with a long enough cord. I had in my box three six foot NES extension cables, two six foot SNES cables, and a set of two SNES<->NES conversion patch cables I fabricated from the loose ends (one fits NES controllers to an SNES plug; the other fits SNES controllers to an NES plug). All Retrobit brand. Connecting all seven cables end to end, I got 42 feet of extensions before my SNES controller stopped working, 50 feet counting the 8-foot cord on the stock SNES controller. Remove any one cable and with six extensions the controllers still worked, but always failed at seven extension lenths. I am unsure if the controller failure was the result of stray capacitance, series resistance, or propagation delay, all of which would increase in proportion to the cable length.

I have seen where extensions can cause failure long before that however. The Turbografx Turbo Tap has an 8-pin DIN connector with a one-and-a-half foot cord on it. The controllers themselves were about 3-4 feet, but I have a 12 foot 8-pin-DIN shielded extension cable that I bought on eBay to use with the controllers. The Turbotap completely fails to operate with the 12 foot cable between the console and tap, and I've heard reports online that the 6 foot extensions or Duo<->Turbo converter cables also fail. So the Turbo Tap absolutely will not function with a cable longer than six feet or so. I can still attach as 12 feet or more of extensions between the controller and tap, only nothing can be between the tap and the console. Why I have no idea as the communications protocol used in these retro controllers is fairly slow compared to modern high speed standards like USB, Ethernet, or HDMI.

So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that the Wiimote standard has some maximum cable length due to stray capacitance, series resistance, or propagation delay, but users who bought the third party extension cables reported controllers working flawlessly with them, only that the retention clip needs to be removed for two player use. It could be the official spec dictates a maximum controller length, but in practice exceeding this length by running out-of-spec cables may still achieve a reliable connection, and we do have many first hand reports confirming that the extensions do in fact work as advertised.

Re: Guide: The Top Nintendo Black Friday 2016 Deals in the US

StarDust4Ever

@PlywoodStick That was a beautiful writeup. Unfortunately the populace is more like a bunch of lemmings than independent thinkers, moreso than ever with social media. The "mob mentality" of society (politics, social media, commercialism, etc) will become it's downfall, I'm afraid. Much like Rome, the United States days to shine in the limelight are numbered and will eventually fade away...

Re: Guide: The Top Nintendo Black Friday 2016 Deals in the US

StarDust4Ever

@PlywoodStick I have seen the long lines Thursday night and in the media. They get bigger every year with Some stores open on Thanksgiving Day. I chose not to participate, rather spend day with family, drive home Thursday evening, and sleep in Friday morning. No shopping for me; not gonna fight the crowds.

If our founding forefathers were still alive, they would be disgusted by the rampant commercialism associated with the holiday season.

Re: Feature: Reflecting on Four Years of the Wii U

StarDust4Ever

@KirbyTheVampire I'm actually not offended if Nintendo rereleases the best games for Wii-U again on the Switch, with enhancements. While a discount would be nice for those of us who supported the Wii-U version, it's fairly obvious that won't happen. Anyway I see myself loving the Switch by not being confined to the bedroom when playing.

Re: Random: Fan Theory Explains the Consequence of King Bob-omb's Defeat

StarDust4Ever

Someone's been drinking way too much Nintendo Kool Aid.

@Yoshi: Forget the DS version for a moment. I even noticed a discrepancy between even the original Mario64 and the Wii VC release. In both versions, collecting the star on Bowser's Sub causes the water wall to retreat, gaining access to Bowser in the Fire Sea.

However, in one ROM version, the sub exits the lagoon immediately after completion of the first star in Dire Dire Docks, allowing Mario to collect all the stars in the level before fighting the 2nd Bowser. In the other ROM version, the sub does not exit the lagoon until Mario defeats the 2nd Bowser, making the pole vaulting star impossible to complete until you return after fighting Bowser.

I can't recall which ROM version did what offhand (it's been a while since playing through the game), but AFAIK there is no Rev A ROM for Mario 64 (USA) so Nintendo made a few edits when releasing the VC version. I wonder what other tweaks they did...
