If you're a fan of 3D platformers, you probably remember Demon Turf from last year, a tight, neat-looking little gem from Fabraz (Slime-san) and Playtonic Friends that released in November. Mixing 2D visuals into a 3D space, we very much enjoyed our time with it, so it's exciting to see a new game featuring Beebz shadow-drop on Switch eShop.
Demon Turf: Neon Splash is a totally new game that ditches the combat from the original — the one part we found a little dull when we reviewed the game — and focuses on what it does best. That's right: no filler, all platforming. That's how that phrase goes, right?
You can check out the new release in neon-drenched action in the launch trailer above, and read some of the new features in the PR blurb below:
FEATURES:
- This painting is no joke! Explore these surreal worlds, filled with bright neon colors, and enjoy the intoxicating combination of 2D & 3D art!
- Beebz will focus on what she does best! Platforming! Maintain a constant momentum with no stopgaps or combat, it's all about the platforming that is faster & better than ever before!
- A unique checkpoint system, tweaked to perfection! Place your own checkpoints at any time with no limit! Retreading is for losers!
- Lots to do! Explore 10 finely crafted levels with a plethora of unique challenges and hazards that are constantly introduced to you at a record pace!
- Setpiece levels with a fun narrative to boot! After all, Beebz didn't get sucked into the painting alone and her friends certainly are characters!
- A ton of additional goals for you to complete, such as: Collecting all the sweets in a level, finding the hidden vinyl which unlocks 10 more remix levels & getting all the trophy times!
- Remix levels?! You betcha! And don't be fooled, these are expertly crafted to be entirely new levels with brand new challenges! Better bring your A-game!
- Who knows what awaits you if you complete the game 100%? We do, and it's pretty sweet, so you should do it.
- 6 finely tuned modifications you can buy with your collectables: Sweets! Only the best of the best, such as mods that add an extra hit point, tweak or add new movesets etc. They even change your looks!
- Leaderboards, baby! That's right, compete for the best times across the world and show off your mettle!
- Photo Mode! Look, at this point it's mandatory and Beebz is really good at taking selfies! So snap away!
- Settings galore! Seriously, this thing's packed with options, so customize your game the way YOU want it to be
We gave the original Demon Turf an 8/10 in our review (check out the video below), saying that despite some repetitive combat, it's "a game that rewards daring and bravery, bolstered by wonderful platforming controls that let you string together incredible combos".
Demon Turf: Neon Splash is out now and will set you back just $4.99 / £4.99 / 4.99€. There's also a week-long launch discount of 10% if you want to snap it up, and anyone who owns the original game already will get an extra discount on top. You can't say fairer than that!
Let us know below if you enjoyed the original and if you'll be grabbing this over the long weekend (if you're having a long weekend, that is).

Cool. I still need to buy the first game (been waiting for a good sale) but I'll add this to the wish list as well. Most of my favourite platformers are ones that focus on actual platforming and level design with minimal/no combat so this one does sound kinda appealing, even if it is short. Maybe I'll end up buying this one first given the price, as long as there's no real reason to play them in release order.
It's nice to see a developer ditching an entire big part of the game (and seemingly obligatory one, like combat) to focus on what's good. Especially when in most platform games combat is often rudimentary or feels more like a sudden stopgap than a natural part of the experience.
Been keeping my eye on this one, heard it had a part one, which I had no idea existed, so I will have to go with that first.
@BenAV This is an isolated adventure and can be played without playing the first ☺️
@PapaBoam I assumed as much but good to have confirmation, thanks.
I liked the first game. I think it may have reviewed generally favourably across the board, which is good for the devs.. The trailer here makes the platforming look really good. I'll wishlist this one for now as I have plenty to play and other priorities. But yeah, real cool.
Great stuff, now Playtonic please release an actual game of your own
Not usually my type of game but this looks sick
Is it really $4.99 to the original's $24.99? How? Wha? Impossiburu.
I just bought the original game on sale (but more expensive to this) and haven't played it yet. Now I feel a little silly.
That looks like a lot of fun and at $5 I would normally buy this, but the demon theme is totally off-putting to me.
Ohhh, this looks way better than the original. The lack of apparently tedious combat is a plus, but the visuals are also much more appealing. I really didn't enjoy the "everything is a shade of red" aesthetic from the original. I could definitely see picking this up.
Nothing really wrong with the combat in the original. It's not mindblowing but far from game breaking. I can tell by your comments that most of you haven't even played it, you're just parroting what you've read. As usual. And as usual, the true fans get left to the wayside for a bunch of whiners. This looks ok, but I wont be buying it. I'll stick with the original.
@aznable
The game looks janky as hell but it its £4.99 and not just a typo, even Im kinda tempted
@PapaBoam are you in the know about this game? Why is it 1/5th the price of normal Demon Turf? What's the deal, is it some kind of lesser experience?
Art-style is still terrible, gameplay looks fun. Normally I never buy a e-shop game at launch (axiom verge 2 being the exception), but at such a low price I couldn't resist (haven't played the original yet since it didn't have a good discount yet).
I expect a shorter game though. Think about it: Much lower price, much smaller file-size. Of course it will be smaller, more like a dlc-pack.
This game is still taking preorders for the Physical edition @ Limited Run games, if anyone is interested
@N64-ROX it's in no way a lesser experience! NitroRAD did a great review and can say it better than I ever could 😂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgQ4KbstZq0&ab_channel=NitroRad
@PapaBoam thanks, I watched most of that video and it doesn't actually say much about Neon Splash except to say that it is "standalone DLC" and a good way to "dip your toe into" Demon Turf so I'm guessing that it's not really a full game as such.
Edit: hey I just noticed that there's a proper review up now, right here on Nintendo Life. That clarifies this a lot better.
@quinnyboy58 Is Demon Turf not their own game?
@Zeldinion This game is published by Playtonic, as opposed to Yooka-Laylee which is developed by Playtonic.
@N64-ROX Ah thanks
